I would really like to give this place more stars. The food was delicious. Our service was great. However, when you spend almost $200 on a meal, you don't want to be seated out back with the trash, or the deliveries, in the staff parking lot. It was a long, 9 hour drive that brought us to Maryland. We were looking forward to some great Maryland crab. After narrowing down our restaurant selections based on Yelp reviews, we decided to give this place a try. The outside of the building caught us by surprise and we almost missed it. For a restaurant, it's small and inconspicuous, with faded light paint and no really noticeable signage. We were there for an early dinner around 4pm, so it wasn't busy at all. There were maybe a handful of people there, tops. However, the very friendly hostess immediately asked if we had a reservation. When we replied "No," she asked us if we wanted to sit out on the patio to eat. We looked at each other questionably. She proceeded to tell us that it was "Shady, with umbrellas," and really made it sound nice. We agreed. Stepping outside I immediately regretted that decision. It was shady, alright. Just not the kind created by trees, because there were no trees. It was not covered. Just a very small area fenced in with cheap plastic chairs and umbrellas, in the parking lot where the staff park and go in and out. As well as deliveries being made, trash being taken out, you know; normal restaurant things that are done but not where you sit to enjoy your meal. We had to open up the umbrellas behind us to create some of that shade the hostess spoke of, to keep the sun from burning us. As I said, our service was great. The food was delicious. The review would have been much different if we had been seated inside. But being seated out there was very unpleasant. To be clear, I wouldn't be happy sitting out there pick-nicking with a burger from the Golden Arches, much less having oysters and crab and (pardon the pun) shelling out almost $200 for a nice meal. If you're going to offer outdoor seating, at least make it nice. Put up some privacy screens and maybe play some music for your guests so they don't see and hear the things that patrons don't need to see and hear. Make it a true ambience for your guests. All that being said, the crab no-cakes were outstanding. Packed with so much crab, I couldn't even tell if there was any breading. The oysters were ice cold and delicious. Based on the food and service alone, If I'm ever in the area again, I would only return with a reservation or to pick up and go. read more

The food was delicious - and not your standard cookie cutter menu. I shared raw oysters as an appetizer while others shared lobster and spinach queso. For main courses, we ordered jumbo scallops (6 per order!), jumbo stuffed shrimp and stuffed cod. Each main dish was accompanied by red beans and rice. For dessert, some of us shared Key Lime Pie. Each and every dish was superb - fresh, perfectly prepared with generous portions. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We will definitely be back! We highly recommend. read more

Ragin' Reef is an underrated gem. It's great for amazing seafood but in a more casual setting than you would get at Dutches. The service has always been ok, polite and quick but without the hovering to refill your water glass the second you take a sip. This is a good place to go when you want great food, but not a romantic or serious scene. Perfect for a night out with friends. read more

We stopped for lunch on our way through town. I had a crab cake from the dinner menu/ it was outstanding! My husband was a little disappointed that they didn't have lobster roll. He ordered the shrimp roll from three lunch menu, he was very satisfied with it! We shared a piece of key lime pie for dessert - it was wonderful! read more

I recently dined here with a coworker for lunch. She raved about Raging Reef so I agreed to give them a try. If you're not from Frederick, it's a little hard to find being located in an industrial area near downtown. They have a parking lot so that is a big plus! The place looks new inside - all remodeled to look like a seaside restaurant. My coworker recommended the fish tacos but I'm not a big fan of salmon. Instead, I ordered the grilled chicken tacos. The lunch portion came with 2 large tacos and an order of fries. Tacos were packed with fresh ingredients and a generous amount of chicken. My order of fries were fresh and crispy - excellent fries here. My coworker order the scallops appetizer as her main entree. The portion was a good size. Scallops were wrapped in candied bacon and served with a citrusy pineapple sauce. It looked amazing! I'm definitely ordering them next time. Everything came under $30. read more

Everything was great! The waitress was excellent, she had the right questions for us, and answers to all our questions. The Wicked Mussels had a bit of spiciness, and great toast to sop up the broth. The Fried Shrimp were deveined, but not butterflied - I think this is better than butterflied. They were crispy and tender, and not tough or chewy. I think the sweet creamy coleslaw is just cabbage and some type of green onion or chive, which is not to my taste. The Crab "No Cake" Crab Cakes is a no-filler broiled style. It is slightly creamy and tastes simply of crab and Old Bay - worth adding to an entree. The Sangria has citrus peel chunks, but not fruit. It was still delicious. The indoor setting was quiet, cool, and pleasant. The spacing of seating was conscientious of social distancing. There is on-site parking. It is worth the detour from the shopping district. read more

Amazing food. Walked in and immediately felt good about the place because it was clean & well designed. Im sure there are plenty of restaurants with nice interiors & shit food but I made sure to look at reviews before going and knew that wasn't the case. I started off with Crispy Calamari & Jalapeños in Lobster Sauce and I could have just kept ordering that and skipped my main entree. It was absolutely delicious and Im craving more. Oh my goodness, YUM! We stopped by on a weekend afternoon for a bite of carry out lunch. The woman there was really hustling to take good care of everyone. She offered us menus and encouraged us to sit if we wished while we waited. She even offered us a glass of water if we would like some. When we got to the food, it was piping hot. There were large fried oysters, that I don't find very often, so they were a delight. Perfectly fried, crisp on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside. The fried cod was again, perfectly breaded and fried to a crisp and the fish inside was a large chunk of flaky, moist fish. Even the coleslaw was great. I would definitely stop by again, anytime! I stopped in to Ragin' Reef after many hours on the road at the end of a family vacation. It was near their closing time but they greeted us with smiles and seated us quickly. I had the jambalaya, which was very flavorful. Several of my family members got the Crab "No cakes", which were the best crab cakes we had on the entire vacation. The fish tacos and stuffed cod were also good. To finish off the meal we shared a slice of bread pudding with vanilla ice cream that was delicious. read more

The Ragin' Reef was a spectacular find! I had crab cakes and she had the jambalaya. The crab cakes were excellent. Plenty of crab and almost no filler. The coleslaw was sweet and creamy...very tasty. The jambalaya was definitely spicy and full of seafood....fish, shrimp and calamari. We also shared an order of mussels. I was probably most impressed with that. Great broth and bread. Drinks were excellent..... margarita and Ragin' Rum Punch were very good. We didn't have dessert, because we were too full of fantastic food. Date night dinner here our first time so we ordered an appetizer of raw oysters. Disappointed they were very small and not firm. Wine was excellent and they had several nice ones to choose from. My dinner of crab cakes were the very best I've ever had. I grew up on the bay eatingg crabs so I don't say that lightly. World-class calamari fritti -- I try this dish all over the world and this place in on my top five list! Their Wicked Chicken Pasta was smokin' good. First time there yesterday, this is a low key, quite, and nautically themed Restuarant. We were very pleasantly surprised at the food and service. The Raw oysters were fresh and delicious, hush puppies were some of the best I've ever had and the seafood pan with lobster, shrimp and scallops were well done and presented. My only quibble and it's a personal thing, not indicative of the establishment is the beer selection. I think they could use a few more choices. What stops them from a five is the red beans and rice, while delicious, if your going for the creole version, the dish could be a bit more moist so that the beans swim around the rice. Otherwise highly recommend, great food and service, we'll definitely be back. read more
