This was our first visit to Rain. We had seen online menus and there were a lot of options on those. The actual menu was very limited compared to them. We were going to ask the waitstaff about that if they had bothered to come to our table. We were seated for almost 20 minutes without someone even bringing us water. It was a little busy but not that busy. The table that sat down next to us after we were there for 10 minutes was greeted immediately by a waitress. We were passed by several waitstaff at least 4 times without them even looking at us. When we left, out of frustration, the host and hostess didn't even care when we told them what happened. If you are anywhere near Abingdon, you MUST eat at Rain. I am only in the area about once a year, and I've always gone to... another restaurant, which is good, but it is not Rain! Last night, I wanted something different, and I stopped at Rain. SO glad I did! The building is lovely. Nice décor. Nice lighting. Nice music. Nice atmosphere. Al fresco dining if you choose. I was there alone on business, so I sat at the bar. Matt took my drink order right away and fixed up a perfect dry martini. He told me about the Catch of the Day -- I can't even remember what kind of fish it was, but it was something I'd never heard of, and he described it as light and flaky, which is what I like, so I decided to try it. It came on top of a risotto cake with asparagus and carrot puree (see photo). SO DELICIOUS I practically licked the plate. Matt was great. Excellent service. We came to Abingdon to ride the creeper trail. This was our first stop when we arrived in town so we were starving. I was excited to try this place based off the reviews. Inside was cute. I love old places with creaky floors. We ordered a cosmo and old fashion. The old fashion was a little sweet and had crushed ice as opposed to the usual ice block. No big deal since we were there for the food. I agree the butternut squash is a must. As far as the service, there were two tables who sat after us but got their main entree before us. Our server clearly forgot our food. You could tell by the look on his face after he dropped off food the second round. Not sure if they rushed to make it but when we finally got our dinner, the real disappointment set in. The pasta was too lemony and the steak was 'ok'. We decided to skip dessert and head to the hotel, the Martha. The next evening, we dined at Sister's at the Martha and surprisingly, dinner at there was much better. If other venues in Abingdon are full you cannot go wrong eating out at Rain. That's not to say it is second best, I would put it on an equal footing as the more popular venue up the street. Rain just hasn't been around since the 1770s. I have been there twice and the food was wonderful. They also have a patio should you want an outdoor experience. We ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes and have to say they were the best we've ever eaten. The tomato chutney and shaved feta cheese were the perfect combination for topping the tomatoes. We also ordered the Blackened Ribeye and the Peppercorn Ribeye; they were absolutely delicious. The sides were tasty as well. You won't be disappointed! read more

I had the opportunity to visit Rain last week. I wanted to treat myself to a nice dinner and this seemed like the perfect spot. I selected the 10 oz. Ribeye with Roasted Potatoes and Fried Spinach. The food was good so previous reviews were on point. However, there was a problem when the bill was presented. I was overcharged over $50! (The reason for 3 stars.) I kept trying to catch the eye of my server but that was not working so it took an extra 15 minutes of waiting just to let her know. She apologized and said the incorrect amount should drop from my card but mistakes like this should not happen. I would think the server would have verified the amount BEFORE presenting it to me and definitely before entering it on my account. read more

My wife and I dined here in April 23. First, the online menu was different from the one at the restaurant. Second, my wife said her salmon was very good. However, her cocktail was fair at best. I had a tasty ribeye steak. I know there is fat in a ribeye, but it was half fat. I also has crispy spinach. It had no flavor at all. Finally, the service was poor. Our server seemed to be more interested in visiting with (it seemed like friends) people at another table outside. The drinks were late. She offered us bread only to find out it was $5. She also kept taking the bread plates when we were not done. 2 stars because some of the food was OK at best, bet this server, I think her name was Katlyn, needs to be trained. Took my wife on a date here. We normally go to the Tavern or 620 State for special dates, but decided to give Rain a try. We were glad we did. Before going into the food, I'd like to thank the host/mgr Chad and our waiter Erik for excellent service. They were attentive and professional. We started with the buffalo crawfish. They were crispy and the sauce was the perfect balance of spice and flavor. I had the corn chowder and my wife a salad. She raved about the basil dressing. For our entrees, I had the ribeye and my wife the seared tuna. Both were prepared perfectly. The ribeye topped with an enjoyable bleu-cheese sauce that added to the flavor of the nicely seared meat. The red skin potatoes were good, and the spinach chips were crispy and expertly salted. My wife's tuna was sushi grade, and seared nicely on the outside. It was served on a bed of risotto and garnished with al dente spears of asparagus. Stuffed from dinner, we skipped dessert. We enjoyed a nice bottle of rose throughout the night. It was a great compliment to great night. If you're in Abingdon, Rain is a must try along with The Tavern. read more

Abingdon is lucky for this gem! Between the open and welcoming bar area and a more reserved and classy dining room, we had a hard decision to make! We went to the bar with warm, witty service and given a menu that had inclusive tastes for everyone without being too large for doubt. it's apparent that this is home to a lot of locals, comfortable laughter bounced off the bold artwork on the walls. It was hard to choose between the fresh ahi tuna filet and the stroganoff- we did both and it exceeded expectations. Excited to visit again to see the live music. First told they were booked solid so we sat at a high top which was fine, bar filled up but when we left about an hour and a half later, hardly anyone in large dining area? They were out of two of the appetizers we wanted to order and one of them was zucchini strips? So we ordered the famous mussels which were at best average, didn't eat all of them. My main dish was shrimp and grits, very few grits and not a lot of shrimp( tails still on) but tons of the new chefs sauce :) the ones at The Papermill are better. At the last minute, a large group of us decided to go out to dinner. The staff at Rain was nice enough to accommodate our group and I am so happy they did! The food was AMAZING! I am both GF and a vegetarian and I was full when we left. The whole experience was perfect - from them taking us at the last minute to the service and the food. This was the best prepared food I have had in a long time. My sister and I visit the area every year and wanted to eat near the Barter Theater so we could make the show on time. For some reason the Rain had several bad reviews but the menu was very intriguing. We called (after their closing time) and a very pleasant person booked us for the next night with no fuss. We arrived and they let us move to an outside table with no problems. They let us make changes to our orders with no extra charges. All the staff were wonderful and we had the best dinner bar none! This place is amazing! Our waitress was really sweet. My husband and I just got a 9wk old puppy. Because we couldn't leave him at home for too long we sat on the outdoor patio. I called ahead to make sure they allowed pets. They provided a small bowl of water for him and sat us over in the corner near the fence so we could enclose him more. The food was AMAZING!! Seriously, on of the best meals I've had in a long time! Note: if you have food allergies ASK! I've got a minor allergy to Chick-peas and the menu said white beans (in most cases that means Navy beans didn't think much of it) but my plate came with chick-peas or Garbanzo beans. My sweet husband ate half of his meal, I ate around the beans- then we switch plates and he finished it off for me. I finished his- BOTH WERE SO GOOD! But again my allergy is very minor. They use very fresh foods so I recommend if you have anything major be sure to ask! Really very good place!! read more
