Took my Denon POA2800 and 2803 receiver for repairs. It seemed that the Right Channel was out on both the amp and receiver. Within a week and a half as promised they call and told me exactly what was wrong with both pieces. They gave me and estimate that was way fair and fixed my amp and receiver within the next week. Both work outstanding well and I am back listening to my column speakers! Never sounded better! I had a great experience here. I took my fender super champ x2 since it was making some cracking and sizzling noises. The amp was under the 5 years warranty. They told me that the turnaround was 2 weeks and that it would cost me $95 if they didn't find any problem or fender considered the noise "normal". I called the day before the 2 weeks passed and they told me that the amp was ready. I picked it up and went straight home to plug it. I played for a few hours and indeed the noises are gone. The gentleman at the shop explained what he did and they told me that if there was any problem I can take it back. Overall the lady and the gentleman I interacted with were very respectful, professional and straightforward. I would definitely recommend this place. I took my 27 year old Roland synthesizer to Rainbow after shopping around at various big box stores first. I found Rainbow's repair fees to be very reasonable (cheaper than most in fact) and their customer service exceptional. I write this review after reading other reviews to the contrary and wonder if these costumers went to the same store! As a performing musician, I take my gear very seriously and John understood all my needs and answered all my questions and concerns with professionalism and kindness. Unlike the big box stores in the area that basically tell you to drop your gear off and hope to get it repaired within the month, Rainbow had my keyboard back to me in under two weeks! I'm a DIY'er with some reasonable electronics skills and had a problem with a piece of gear. I diagnosed it myself, and bought replacement parts, but installing them was just above my skill level so I took it to these guys. They competently did the work, and in good time, but they charge a $20 "chemical" fee for any job they do regardless of what it is. This is simply unreasonable and just a cheap ploy to make more money from their customers. Their customer service was pretty bad, and I think most people wouldn't have been happy. I spent years doing technical customer service so I know how good and bad experiences can go...this was not a good one. Bottom line, the work they do seems good, but they charge too much, and interfacing with them was painful so I'll be looking for someone else to do the work next time. read more

I have a pair of high end Infinity speakers that were experiencing a problem. Way too expensive to toss out. They are listed as a repair source for Infinity products. After many emails with the Infinity people I arranged to haul my speaker in- not an easy process as it weighs about 50 pounds and I live in the Bay Area. I got there and before they would take the product in they tried to replicate the problem I was having. Unfortunately we were unable to do that so I was going to be stuck with the decision of leaving it there to see if they could try to fix it and roll the dice. Fortunately he went the extra distance to check the on-line resource available to technicians. He found the problem and told me what I needed to do. He spent 30 minutes with me and didn't charge me a dime. When I got back to the Bay Area I went to the electronics store and got $5 worth of parts and it was fixed. Needless to say I am a big fan. He took time, was very detailed, solved my problem and i didn't have to leave it there for diagnosis. read more

I really struggled with this business. A few years ago I went in to have my stereo and receiver fixed as a birthday present for my husband. I was told that I would be charged a service for researching the parts and labor to do the repair. It was $90.00 per item to find the problem and the parts. I was guaranteed that if I went with the repair that I would get that charge reimbursed toward the repair. This reimbursement had a time limit. I asked them if I could have some kind of estimate before I go forward. They told me it should not be more that $300.00 after parts. They could not see how it could be more from what they could already see. When the diagnostic came back it was $700 to $900.00 dollars to fix, way over the guesstimate. I asked if I could have more time to come up with the money as the amount was so much greater then originally guessed. They said no that I had to decide in the time given. I lost $180.00 and no repair. My husband did not get a gift that year. Here it is several years later and my Stereo still is not fixed. I will go ANYWHERE but here. We needed an audiophile-grade power amp and tape deck fixed, and we got exactly what we had hoped for. Relatively fast repair and no issues whatsoever. We even had a lively and enjoyable conversation about studio recording equipment, early Journey albums, and vacuum tube amplification, among other things, with the guy at the counter, John. Took in a DAT recorder to be repaired. It only required cleaning. They charged me $185.00 to clean a DAT machine. Two hours? Seems rather high to me. And the dude was rude to boot. I'm upgrading my initial review to 3 stars because the guy I followed up with on the phone was very friendly and professional, so I guess it's luck of the draw when it comes to customer service. As to repair time and price, I had to follow up on my own to get the status of their diagnosis, and the repair is definitely pricey, but to me that's more of an issue with the manufacturer's unimpressive warranty than it is the shop. In summary, I wouldn't tell you to avoid Rainbow Electronics if you need a repair and they are the only authorized shop around. Just expect a fairly sizable bill and the need to do a little following up yourself. read more

Brought a speaker in for repair. By far the WORST experience i have ever had with a repair place. The technicians were rude, patronizing and completely without any customer service skills. Cant say much better for the owner(s) / manager either unfortunately. Sad.... The desk clerk cared more about talking to friends of his and eating ice-cream rather than attending to a customer, ME., and then after the so called technician repaired the unit at $80 a hour labor .....I had to call THEM after it had been already done for 3 days? WTH? Rainbow couldnt pay me double what i paid them to come back and have them replace a TV remote's battery. "Local" businesses are supported by "local" customers. However after reading further reviews on YELP about Rainbow, i can now see that I am not the only one who shares these same bad experiences. You get one star. This is a hustle and throw shop. Don't leave anything with them for an $80 look see unless they can tell you if parts are available. They won't tell you that till after you've paid your fee not before. I paid hundreds of dollars on a keyboard problem before I was told there were no parts for it. Customer service is marginally civil and somewhat argumentative. I don't know how they have stayed in business this long. I will not do business with them again if I can avoid it at all. Sorry guys but your customers are your financial responsibility not your landlord. Your knowledge won't keep you in business only your customers can do that. Update after new interaction: As to the amp, They won't publish schematics (Anything else at $500 will certainly have those available) so its entirely up to them to say how it works and i can't be totally accurate in my review. To their credit, pentodes might perform alright as overdrive, but the 12 volt power supply simply IS a "starved plate" for the 125 volt tube they use, and won't have any headroom/gain for mic use. Unless it internally steps up voltage, but this is an actual quote from them "These tubes are operated WAY below its maximum plate dissipation ratings and therefore should last over 10 years with daily use" when asked "What plate voltages?". Hidden silicon, attenuating input, something might be fishy but I can't verify so I'll leave it to you (few reviews, but on a popular retail site, a good one was by a "friend' of rainbow, and the bad one appeared more unbiased). The rest of my review, the tech's test was actually inconclusive and he said the motor transformer would isolate me. Upon QUALIFIED inspection, It obviously does not have an earth ground, and the non-polar plug means the chassis might easily go hot (read about Keith Relf, even modern polar 3 prong equipment can have a hot chassis with bootleg ground outlets or non polar lifts). The motor transformer was in no way a part of the amp power supply and in any way safe REMOVED OR NOT, the amplifier simply had an isolated internal ground path ready to short to the chassis (possibly has a failing death cap, or through the visible bare wire with rotted insulation a mm away from the chassis) leading to his test results. The poorly insulated rotting (again, 70 years old) volume pot/on off switch was directly connected to the wall at 120vac! I asked about removing the motor, AND adding a 3 prong fused plug and isolation transformer. The tech had his agenda and simply wasn't listening to me half the time because he kept talking. This phonograph was for conversion to an amp (intentionally cheap and non-collectible), I did ask about restoring my father's childhood devices (a reel to reel specifically, he also has a similar phonograph that I didn't mention) and my other tube gear at home and he said to throw it away. He was entirely concerned about the market value of selling everything, and that was how he decided whether he would work on something or not. Seemingly just to charge as much as possible (read "$5000 in a week"). Don't take my word for it though, their own comment (noted above) shows contradicting statements. Their own reply to me, deviating from what I know actually happened, certainly verified for me personally the nature of this business. But again, just look at every other poor review and see the themes for yourself. I've already found a "good" review elsewhere explicitly made by their own "good friend" (also noted above), so take it all with some salt. In the end, I did get qualified affordable service for conversion to a SAFE guitar amp from a much friendlier business. Full power, unlike the 12 volt $500 one, this can push a proper speaker, sounds beautiful, and won't kill me. read more

I will never use this place again for anything, The repair tech on duty was extreamly rude and not helpful at all. They couldn't even try to repair my electronic device . He basically said it was a throw away item that will cost more to repair than its worth . I paid 300.00 for it two years ago, and they are still 300.00 at Best Buy . So I did some on line searching and was able to take it apart myself and found the obvious failed part and ordered it for under 40.00 . Got the part I needed and installed it myself and is working like new . So , I'm not an electronics repair person, and it took me a little over an hr to take it apart and repair the unit myself. Not to impressive to say the least. I think that they are very selective on things that are easy for them to figure out . You need to be little polite to the general public if you want to see return customers . I would have been happy to pay them to repair it if he could, but maybe he is just lazy , not sure. This is the worst repair place I have ever experienced. HANDS DOWN! They gave my Yamaha board back to me unfixed and the sliders wouldn't move because there was so much gunk in them. When I took it back to tell them about the sliders they yelled at me and called me a liar.. Not sure if there are alternatives in the Sacramento region, but avoid them if you can. They take advantage of the repair or buy new challenge. Unreasonable pricing and mambo jumbo for explanation. Save the $85 that it takes to diagnose towards the new piece. (Paid $250 for an amp I paid $400 5 years ago that still does not work the way it should - I am giving myself zero stars for that too. Learned the second round when I was asked to pay $300 for an outdated receiver worth $500 seven years ago. Still, zero stars for myself as they got the $85 for that too.) I retrieved my defective amplifier feeling that I paid the $85 diagnostic fee so he could plug it in and confirm that it didn't work. I was then given an estimate for a replacement amplifier that exceeded the cost of new equipment. read more

This is the best place in Sacramento to have your electronics repaired. We took in our Roland keyboard . We expected a huge bill, but it turned to be a very small repair. Took receiver in for diagnosis (which costs $85) and was told low voltage regulator was out and would cost $270 to fix. Receiver cost less than that so I took it back and then discovered it was covered under warranty Sent it to factory authorized dealer who discovered a wire was loose, fixed it in five minutes, and when I asked if low voltage regulator was out, technician said it was fine and obviously just a wire. When I called Rainbow to explain and ask what they could do, a woman who said she was the owner said they've been in business 28 years and their technicians are very experienced. Enron was in business for more than 28 years too, and obviously she meant their technicians are very experienced at ripping people off. Read the reviews before you waste your time and money at this shoddy establishment. read more

I bought an old 1958 Magnavox Hifi from an estate along with a ton of old records. My teens want to learn about "old school" music &buying this system was fun, except the system didn't work. I went to a number of repair shops only to be laughed out the door. One guy told me that rebuilding an antique would cost tons of$. One good friend told me about Rainbow Electronics. They are 1 &1/2 hours from our home in SanFrancisco. Needless to say I drove there and they explained that the system could be costly, but that they have done many renovations & have access to old and remade parts. More interesting was that modern day guitar amps use the same tubes my old hifi used. John the owner and Robert the senior Tech are great guys and very knowledgable at their craft. Bottom line I paid $500 for a job others quoted much more for this repair. They built in a fuse system to prevent an engineering flaw that existed in the system at the time it was manufactured. I sent in a POD X3 for repairs. A good deal of money spent later, and it was returned to me still not working. Rainbow refused to pay shipping charges back to actually fix the problem, telling me that it had to be something on my end. I am a 20 year veteran of music and music electronics and would know if my music gear was the problem... Rainbow is truly doing Line 6 a disservice by being an authorized repair facility. read more

I looked for electronics repair shops and didnt have many to pick from, so I chose Rainbow electronics. What a expensive mistake that was! My quality TEAC receiver wasnt producing sound from the left speaker very well (cut in and out). I was quoted over 300.00 for the repair and assured it would fix my problem, so I agreed to the price. I picked up my receiver a week later enthused, but when I got home it was as if they had just cleaned out the board and wiring inside and didnt address the issue, I had the exact same problem with the left speaker cuting in and out. They do have a 90 day warranty on their work but if they didnt even get close to fixing it the first time, why would the second time be any more satisfactory? I took my high end CD player in to get fixed. They told me it would cost $85.00 to diagnose the problem and that could be applied to the total if I decided to go ahead and fix it. Fair enough. So after looking at it, they told me it would cost $234.10 to fix it, I told them to go ahead. I brought it home, played it and it wasn't fixed. So I took it back 11 days later for them to check it out. Now they wanted an additional $270.30 to "fix" it. Again I said to go ahead. I brought it home and it still wasn't fixed. Now I'm over $500.00 in repairs and it still isn't fixed. I took it back in and the lady said it would be covered under "warranty" so I left thinking it would be fixed. Later I got a call from the owner named John saying that the parts they put in were cheap Chinese knock offs and they couldn't get quality replacement parts. This would have been good to know about $400.00 ago! Plus he said it was out of warranty! So now $504.40 later, my CD player works worse than before and there are no quality parts available to fix it with. read more
