This lovely venue is a bit of a hike from Boston during rush hour but well worth the trip. It's a…read morelovely and popular restaurant housed in a colonial-style building. The staff are friendly and the servers knowledgeable and efficient. The hostess had trouble finding our reservation (my companion was already seated) but it seemed to be quite busy that Friday night. The restaurant consists of quite a few separate rooms and we were seated in one that was not too crowded. (I walked through the bar on my way in and that was hopping.) I had a glass of sauvignon blanc and after studying the menu and consulting our server my companion and I both went for a burger. There was no problem with my swapping out the french fries for onion rings (points there!). The burgers were done exactly to our liking (mine mediume rare, hers medium well). I should have turned down dessert, I was that full, but my companion was willing so we went for it. There was a good selection of typical New England desserts and we finally settled on a blueberry crisp topped with vanilla ice cream which was good but not great (not sure I can put my finger on why, so it may be that I was too full to enjoy it). There is a parking lot although it is not paved so was not fun walking through at the end of a day when it clearly had rained. It also could use some lighting. This is a wonderful restaurant suitable for a special occasion or an ordinary night out. I will definitely be back.

I needed scallops . I Ordered the scallops and clams with onion rings, Cole slaw. I added a small…read moreclam chowder. A harpoon beer . Well, I am a regular here for seafood. A very well run operation, clean restaurant , well maintained and quality fresh seafood. Plenty of seating indoors or outdoors. Now; my meal summary. Beer a 16oz and cold ... perfect Fried clams were outstanding, not greasy, no gooey bellies with sand or mud... outstanding taste . Scallops moist, tender cooked perfect and outstanding. Onions rings nice breading but need more taste? Maybe add in buttermilk and add a mild hot sauce or blend of peppers or soak rings in a salted brine or something I saw a chef do somewhere? Cole slaw was too big of a serving and moist but all the white cabbage? Needed more green, purple cabbage and more flavor to the sauce? Maybe more cream, pepper, vinegar or pice sugar or whatever the great slaw makers do ? Needs flavors The clam chowder ai was not a fan of? Lumpy wax the friend of Wally on the Leave it to Beaver show... this was lumpy and no Needs flavors .. I added 4-6 packs little pepper packs but didn't help. Add some Hungarian paprika or tarragon, salt pork or bacon taste, garlic or onion or worchershire sauce? Anything to kick it up a notch while keeping the New England clam chowder theme for tourists... definitely not lumpy . Now... they provide mixed tarter in small containers and tarter was very good on my clams and scallops . My major pet peeve is the Heinz ketchup packet containers where it days to peel to dip Or tear to empty ? Never work half time and accident waiting to squirt on my white shirt for a 12 buck Ckeaning charge or dispose of shirt as a red spot on white shirt ... Dump those and put ketchup in little containers like tarter or find a better ketchup option... the gross bottles handled by everyone who may or not wash their hands less appealing . The funky ketchup packets are sucky too... surprised that Heinz hasn't figured out an improved dip cup ? Or a ketchup cup use like the McDonald's nugget sauce cups ? Anyway maybe cheaper for clam box to buy bulk ketchup and fill cups like tartar sauce cups? Maybe upgrade to a Clam box better ketchup... not a game changer for my excellent fried clams and scallops... Great clean , sanitary place , quality seafood cooked excellent and consistent every visit. I'll be back and when chowder improves... 5 stars rating all day.

I have such fond memories of the Clam Box. Sadly, this last visit was 'meh'. I read here that the…read moreowners of the Clam Box proudly state that they add no flavors, spices, nor salt to their fried clam batter. The end result is batter that taste like plain flour. (Think 'wonder bread'.) The clams were fresh, but the batter actually detracted from the flavor. A tiny bit of salt and pepper, or maybe some corn meal in the mix would have given it something other than a cardboardy taste. Furthermore, the frying oil was also 'meh.' There are so many oils and oil mixes that have a subtle flavor, their oils had none. Nevertheless, the portion size was great, and although the service was a bit slow, it was ok. Would I come back? With Woodmans and Farnham's both nearby, it's pretty doubtful.
