Wow! So, the cafe and the bar are right next door, but separate places. For the first time, we had the chance to check out their bar, and it was absolutely amazing!!! We tried the Reggie and in the bartender's recommendation, I tried the Betty's Berry Martini, and both drinks are just in a league of their own. Both were strong, flavorful, and smooth, basically everything you'd dream of in a drink. The service was top notch, completely in line with their cafe next door, and the drinks were unbelievable, as is the food next door. Inside was beautiful, with some funky artsy lighting going on at the tables with fun figurines on the wall, and they even had some live acoustic music going on when we were there. read more

I went here for lunch with Dad on a rainy afternoon. The decor is eclectic and there is definitely a bit of an artsy vibe, which I appreciate. The server was nice, but not very attentive. My Dad and I both got super and salad and even though, they weren't crowded the soup took a very long time to come out and when it did, it was cold. A little disappointing. Might have just been an off day, though. I will update this if I visit again. It looks like they have live music at night so perhaps this would be a better spot to meet for a drink or an evening meal rather than lunch. read more

Very bad experience. Food was horrible and extremely rude waitress. The waitress needs to not work in anything customer service. She was short with us when we walked in at first. Then after a reasonable amount of time she asks if we're ready to order and we said yes. She walks over to the table and gives us maybe 3 seconds before no one spoke up first and gave an extremely rude, "oh so y'all aren't ready to order then?!" Food came out and getting something with "guacamole" in it was a horrible mistake. It's not fresh, it's not even edible and I normally love guacamole. Great variety on the menu of this little cafe located right across from the Reedy River entrance. The turkey sandwich with brie, green apple and cranberry on a croissant was very good. Service was quite warm and pleasant; the only reason this gem doesn't get 5 stars from me is because there seemed to be only one waitperson and for those of us who chose to eat al fresco, this meant having to wait for beverage refills longer than one would expect or likely to experience by inside eating patrons who could grab the attention of the waitstaff on demand. read more

The seating and ambience at this place is really cool. It's set up so you can easily watch the live music. There was a grand piano, and artwork everywhere. The staff is really friendly and the musicians playing both nights I went sounded amazing. Have been looking for some real jazz and improv in Greenville since arriving a month ago and then there was Rainer's. There is a couple that I have seen both times I went who dance together and listen to the music; this most recent time the music was simply A+. I arrived in Greenville and immediately needed some food, something healthy and quick. Rainer's was the perfect choice. I ordered a chicken sandwich that had some avocado and zesty quinoa. The atmosphere was quaint and it was stressed that there was no cell phone usage, which I liked. The meals came out quickly and I LOVED the zesty quinoa. Beautifully appointed speakeasy lounge bar in downtown Greenville. The decor, seating of this place is world class. You could not have designed a better atmosphere. We've been a couple times now and have always had very good service. Struggling with the cocktail selection - nothing jumps off the menu to us so we stick with old standards, which is fine. They initially struggled with lighting - it was too bright for a speakeasy lounge. Looks like they have figured that out. My only recommendation is the music they play. It will put you to sleep. You don't need tech or loud rock but find something that has a little beat to it. Maybe some old rat pack? All in all love this place and will see myself going back a number of times for cocktails. read more

I think Rainer's may have dropped the "Just Desserts" part of their name because now they offer a myriad of sandwiches and side items. I had been hearing from various sources how great this place was, so naturally I wanted to give it a try myself. Plus, they are located just a few steps away from where I work (a nice walk across the park, anyone?) so convenience was also a factor. After selecting the chicken salad sandwich with a side of broccoli salad and a tall glass of lemonade, I went outside to soak up the sun at one of the sidewalk tables. To my chagrin, things took a nosedive shortly thereafter. Issue #1: After waiting...and waiting...and waiting...for 45 minutes (!), my lunch finally arrived. Obviously most of my lunch hour was already eaten up by the time my food showed up. Granted it was a beautiful day and I really was enjoying being outside, but I really was not pleased with the amount of time it took them to put a sandwich and a side item together. I also do not enjoy wolfing food down at warp speed when I know I have to be somewhere at a certain time. Food is supposed to be savored, or at least mine is. I like to take my time to fully experience each bite. So much for that! Issue #2: ONIONS. Pungent red onions which were so abundant in BOTH the sandwich and the broccoli that, for the rest of the afternoon and even well into the evening, I felt as though was wading (er, excuse me, DROWNING) in an onion sea. Thank goodness I remembered to bring my toothbrush to work that day. Issue #3: Probably not a big deal to most people, but Rainer's only has two kinds of chips: Garden Salsa Sun Chips and Sour Cream and Onion (no more onions, please!!) Sun Chips. My personal fave is Original flavor, so I was bummed out about not having that as an option, and I might add that the "right" kind of chips just might have redeemed my extremely tardy, onion-laden lunch. I'll return to Rainer's at some point but will order something else...just not when I have to be somewhere in an hour. read more

I had the worst experience at this place and I will not be patronizing it again. The general manager was rude and unprofessional. Their payment processing machines went down and the waitress told me and my friend we would have to pay cash or let them take a photo of our credit cards to process later when their machines came up. I told her that I didn't have enough cash on me to pay. The bill and I wasn't going to let them. Take a picture of my credit card because there's a lot of fraud out there. The general manager said that we would have to wait thirty minutes or more for their machines to come back on line. I said that was unacceptable and I wasn't going to be held there against my will. She asked if I had Venmo or cash app. I don't use those applications and I told her I didn't. She was getting upset with me and said that I was being rude because I did not want to wait a few minutes. I told her if it was. Just a few minutes then I would wait but she said it was thirty minutes. Then my friend said that she would Venmo her to her personal account and trust her to pay her bill. I asked her for the owner's name and she told me to Google it she wasn't going to tell me. I had the loveliest and warmest Greenville experience in Rainey's Cafe. We stopped in after dinner because my eagle eye spotted a Brick Street Sweet Potato Cake (Always Amazing) through the window. My husband asked if we could share a piece and I promptly said "ABSOLUTELY NOT!" The wonderful woman behind the counter recognized that I am clearly a glutton for sweets and offered me a free piece of her homemade bread pudding and whiskey sauce. It was magnificent! She was so sweet and it felt like being in someone's kitchen. It's always had an incredible arty atmosphere but the delicious warmth exuding was such a treat. Went to this place and ordered a side of cucumber salad. I paid $4.27 and left a tip of $1.00. They literally gave me six slices of cucumbers that tasted like they were marinated in vinegar and sugar. When I asked about the size of the order and informed them that cucumbers are not that expensive, I was told that I could go right around the corner to Publix!! Their Apple Fruit Salad is the best salad I have ever had! The greens taste fresh from the garden and the mixture of fruit was so good. Their chili was amazing too and I don't usually eat soup, but the waiter said it was heavy on the beans, so I wanted to try it and it did not disappoint. Can I just say; whoever designed this place has super unique taste? I love the overall feel of this place and how they advertise the local community's artwork. It reminds me of SF minus the crazy uphill, bumper-to-bumper traffic. My only suggestion is probably to put up a convenient menu to look at. The food is alright. I'd read and heard great things about Rainer's, and it was on my bucket list. I finally had the opportunity to go for lunch. I went to the counter, because it seemed the natural thing to do, and ordered tomato soup and the French dip sandwich. I looked around at the artwork and took a seat at one of the tables. I noticed that the ladies next to me were receiving table service and I was a little confused. Then the waitress who was walking around got confused too, and we had to clear up (twice) that I was indeed intending to eat there, and I had to tell her I didn't know it was table service. There was no sign indicating "sit wherever you like" or something like that to tell people what the flow was. The counter is close to the entrance, so the flow of the place if you didn't know any better looks like counter service. Anyway, they were nice, but they should do something about that part. The food tasted fine, but didn't qualify as good. The tomato soup was so weird, in that the veggies were chopped SUPER finely. It was like I was eating relish intended to be soup. Then, the French dip was just boring. The beef was pot roast. (Like, when you put a whole roast in the oven for a while, and it kind of falls apart, with a bit of a dryness to it.) French dip sandwiches are supposed to be made with tender, sliced roast beef, and I haven't found a place in the south that can do this correctly since I moved here 2+ years ago. For all the culinary things the south does well (and there are many), roast beef in general is not one of them (and you can't even find a good steak & cheese, either). (They all put provolone on these sandwiches - NO!!! WHY!!) The sandwich wasn't very big either, and for over $10 it didn't even come with chips. The tiny cup of soup was $4.50. Come on. The ambience was really cool and they had some interesting, quirky artwork. But they also had some signs and stickers that were a bit on the controversial side.... I don't really care, but they could have been seen as offensive by some. Rainer's was disappointing, fairly boring and I have no reason to ever go back. read more

What a great little place. We didn't have reservations the Saturday night we were in Greenville, so we took a chance on Rainer's, because it wasn't busy. So glad we did! Not too heavy and not too light. The side portion of pasta salad was a little small. I finished it in 3 forkfuls. T'was delicious though. This place would get 5 stars if it wasn't for the outrageously priced wine. Nine dollars for a glass of basic Chardonnay. The price wasn't listed on the menu, and it wasn't presented to us as something unique. Generally when I order basic white wine it's three to four dollars. If I am ordering something special or there's a wine cellar with a list of wines, their year, location, and pairings... Then yes, nine dollars is fine. But this was just a general request for some cheap white wine to go along with a sandwich. It was kind of shady to slap the nine dollar price tag on the bill for something so simple. My fiancés sandwich was the chicken pesto panini. It was a little dry and could have definitely used a dipping sauce. Perhaps a small bowl of pesto. Overall, the food was good. I came here with a couple of co-workers and the experience was okay. I ordered a ham and Swiss melt with a cup of broccoli cheese soup but ended up receiving a cup of the tomato soup instead. I do have to say that immediately upon mentioning the mixup, a bowl of the broccoli cheddar was brought out as well. I am actually glad, though, that I was given the wrong soup as they let me keep both and the tomato soup was pretty good!! The sandwich was just okay- I ordered without lettuce in fear that it would become wilted while being pressed and I should have skipped out on the tomato as well. The broccoli soup was just okay and I would not order again. The two women that I was with both ordered salads which they were happy with. Overall the staff is nice and it is a nice little spot to grab a sandwich at. If I am in the area again during lunch time, I will definitely Re-visit to try something else and give them another chance. read more
