You pay to ship your $900 leather motorcycle jacket to have the zipper repaired due to having used them previously to repair a zipper on the matching pants. They notify you that they no longer work on leather items and offer to recycle your garment or send it back to you at your expense. No where on their website or Instagram do they mention that they no longer work on leather. I spoke with Matt the "manager" regarding this and he agreed that the website needs to be updated and that he would get my jacket returned today. Two hours later I get a notification from AmEx that I have been billed by Rainy Pass Repair for a shipping charge. When I spoke with Matt after seeing the charge he told me "that's the way we do business." He then said I could write the owner an email to the general email address and he would forward it. I suppose I should believe him but that might be difficult considering the level of service they appear to provide. It would be like taking your Buick back to the shop that repaired it last month only to be told, "We don't work on Buicks here anymore" even though the sign outside said "We work on Buicks." They quoted $75 during drop-off (where tailor came out to review and verbally quote to front desk worker), then made me pay $121 for pickup. I understand miscommunication happens but this felt like a racket. In short and only based on my one experience: Quality work, outrageous pricing, and unacceptable business dealings. Shame on me for not making them provide me with written quote at drop off and also accepting their upcharge. I should have told them to keep the jacket but that's not my style. Cleaning service seems to be fine...for my sleeping bag. Unfortunately, they shipped me, in addition to mine, some poor schmuck's bag. I e-mailed Rainy Pass immediately and told them of the blunder. In response, I was told they'd send me a shipping label to return it to them. Two weeks went by with no label until I told them I'd be contacting the other guy directly. Then I got a shipping label...from FedEx. Not one I could just drop on my porch, but have to take to the nearest FedEx office. Whatever. I hope the poor guy who's been without his sleeping bag for probably a month didn't have any plans for it. My advice: find a laundry near you with appropriate equipment, get a bottle of Nikwax and do it yourself. That will definitely be my future avenue. read more

These guys are great. I had an instrument gig bag with a broken strap. They repaired it, actually made it better than new, lengthening both straps and reinforcing the stitching where the straps attach to the bag. Rainy Pass did a great job repairing a small hole in my favourite down coat. I am from out of town and only in Seattle for 2 days. I paid the premium fee and got next-day service. They texted me when the coat was ready, which was helpful. I'm taking off 1 star because the young woman with dark hair that I dealt with when I entered was just horrible. She was typing and looking intensely at the computer when I first approached the front desk. She definitely saw me enter the area, but she didn't look up or say anything. Not wanting to disturb her, I waited a couple of minutes before finally saying hello. She didn't ask how she could help me, and only responded with "hi". I proceeded to explain the repair that I was seeking and she seemed totally annoyed. It's been a long time since I've encountered anyone as surly as her. Do NOT trust this company. You will lose your money like I did! Years ago I had a good experience with Rainy Pass, but recently I had a horrible experience that cost me $250 for a faulty fix. I sent in my old dry loft REI down sleeping bag rated at -20degF to be refilled. The cost seemed pretty steep, but I decided to go for it, considering this was an expensive, great bag. When they sent the bag back, it was grossly overstuffed. I'd never seen a sleeping bag so severely stuffed. It now weighed 6 lbs. It was previously a backpacking sleeping bag that weighed around 3 lbs. It would no longer fit in the stuff bag or even my backpack! They had also failed to stuff the parts around the neck and broken the neck cord. At first they graciously took responsibility for the problems and said they would redo it until I was happy. They admitted they had failed to check the specs for the bag. They redid the stuffing and sent it back to me again. This time the bag was again under stuffed. When I went camping, I was cold at 45degF. It was underperforming the same as before I sent it in! I called them to explain the situation, and they now refuse to fix it, saying I would need to pay again for the service. I explained that my -20deg bag does not keep me warm at 45deg, that they took out too much down, and they didn't care. The bag is now smaller than ever and won't even work in the fall. This is an extremely expensive sleeping bag, and now it's ruined. They said they had stuffed it twice for me, end of discussion. They won't fix it again, even though they admitted the first time it was their fault. They don't care that they failed to stuff the bag correctly. So now I am left trying to fight this through Business Bureau. They were extremely rude and dismissive that I paid $250 for a faulty service. I brought a much loved jacket in for zipper repair. I had reaquested a 2 way zipper and they put in a one way. After getting the straightened out they were going to mail me my jacket. I waited and waited and finally called them " where is my jacket"? after about a month. Oh the post office didn't pick up??? I have one of the original REI Base Camp 6 tents and have used it quite a bit for glamping since I bought it in 2010. This otherwise perfect 3 (4) season tent had one flaw that I knew would fail eventually and it did; The stupid clear vinyl (or similar material) window of the rain fly finally gave up and disintegrated. The rest of the tent is still prime. I sent the fly from Houston Texas to Rainy Pass and per my request, they replaced it with a seam sealed nylon patch that matched so perfectly that I had a tough time spotting it. In fact, I had to take it out to the front yard and lay it out before I could locate it. Very professionally done! My bomb proof glamping tent is back in action. I could not recommend their services more. I'll even go so far as to say if my backpacking Slingfin Portal 2 tent is ever damaged in a mishap, I'll send it to them for repair. read more

The best service that exists and incredibly nice customer service reps. I ripped my brand new REI down jacket on an exposed nail and tons of the down started flying out of the sleeve immediately. I patched it up with some tape, emailed an inquiry over and they responded super quickly. Just got my jacket back and it's literally in perfect condition, and the shipping back was very fast too. Brought my sleeping bag in for cleaning and got it back in a timely manner. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing I can say. When I went to pick up my sleeping bag, it was way more $ than I was quoted AND they lost my expensive stuff sack. After I asked where it was, one of the employees was very rude about it and claimed that I hadn't brought it in with the sleeping bag. I am 100% sure that I brought it in as it was also very dirty and needed to be cleaned. I would have been disappointed but much less frustrated if they had been apologetic and nice about it. I stopped by Rainy Pass Repair on Friday AM with a 20-year old framed Jansport backpack that needs repair to the shoulder straps. The molded plastic mounts at the top of the straps and that attach to the frame with aluminum pins were failing and one finally tore loose on a backpacking trip this summer. A youngish, unfriendly guy working at the front counter greeted me with something like "These framed backpacks are really not helpful; we cannot get at this with our sewing machines." (Duh!) I knew going in that the straps would need to be removed from the frame. Maybe the front counter guy took pleasure in making me squirm for having failed to do that ahead of time. I knew I wasn't going to be able to figure it out under pressure (the interaction was tense from beginning to end) and weirdly the Rainy Pass Repair employee actually feigned total cluelessness about how to remove the pins (super simple - they attach with split rings). After I directly asked if he would take the pins out, he said no. The whole situation was ridiculous - I almost wish he'd said at the outset "Prepare yourself, I'm going to make this as uncomfortable for you as possible in hopes that you'll just leave." I left. And felt humiliated, which appeared to be this guy's MO from the beginning. When I got home it took me about 30 seconds to remove the straps from the frame. Am I up for going back in for a second try? It would be much more convenient than working with Jansport directly, but no. Rainy Pass Repair has no excuse for treating customers with disdain. I'm guessing they don't treat their gearhead clients like this, and certainly not their corporate clients! So this is largely a caution to the large majority of people with gear repair needs who simply love outdoor recreation but don't fall into those categories. read more

Since I live in San Francisco, I got estimate ranges based on whether it proved to be a zipper slider replacement versus full zipper replacement, The zipper slider cost probably didn't even cover their administrative time. Replacement zipper was about $80 more than the zipper slider, all affordable making it easier to spare the lands of another item in the landfill. The icing on the cake is while they could have said both zippers were in need of full repair, one item was reported to just need a zipper slider evidencing their integrity. I would definitely use Rainy Pass Repair again and hope that other outdoor enthusiast would support keeping them in business of keeping us in the outdoors while reducing the waste. read more

I actually had great communications with them before proceeding with zipper replacement. $400 Gore-Tex sailing jacket was almost 10 years old and was sentimental to me. We traded emails back and forth with pictures of options of zipper types etc. and settled on one less prone to salt water rusting / seizing. Communication was A+ for me. So $180 later I quickly get back a jacket that looks new. All stitching looks original as it was when new (no crooked stitching or signs of holes where old stitching had been) Some Yelpers have complained of high cost. I deem it relative to how much you value the item. I buy quality equipment and expect a lot of performance and useful life. I feel their value proposition is priced right. If you buy something made in Sri Lanka for $80 and rip it, how can you expect someone to repair it for say $10-30?! I have my car worked on for $120 an hour. Why would I expect someone with high level sewing skills to work for minimum wage? You get what you pay for. So onward and upward with another 5+ years. Thanks Rainy Pass! read more

Awesome service. Had a faulty zipper on a hydration pack that I love but was out of commission. The manufacturer warranty was expired but they referred me to Rainy Pass. Rainy Pass replied to my email within a day and I was on the phone with them the next day talking options/costs/recommendations. They said they could replace the entire zipper with a high quality YKK zipper but it would be a bit more expensive than simply repairing. I opted for the YKK zipper and they said it'd take about 6wks. I agreed then forgot about it. Just got it back and the workmanship is top notch. I live in downtown Chicago and waiting for the train on the EL platform in February sucks This year I was tired of messing around with a standard warmth coat so I went online and ordered a Sherpa nylon down coat. Man I love this coat! It weighs an ounce and it's like walking around with a space suit. No cold gets in. Unfortunately, a couple days after it arrived I got tagled in a thorn bush and shredded one side of the coat. I was devastated. I called Sherpa and they recommended Rainy Pass Repair. I sent the coat off and expected to get my coat back with a few patches on it. I resigned myself to that and thought it might make me look more rugged. In a few weeks the coat arrived at my doorstep. The only place I know of for serious gear repair. Unfortunately, they are wicked expensive (and I'm not even from New England). They have a $50 minimum. They do repairs from all over the US - they are authorized warranty/repair services by several outdoor specialty manufacturers. To their credit, they do really really good work. Very high level quality. I have had them repair an ultralight down jacket (and they filled it with some new 800+ fill down, very good stuff), stitching throughout one of my favorite climbing packs, and a broken zipper and torn seam on a synthetic sleeping bag. And I paid for it. Moral of the story is, if you need some serious gear repair beyond average (in my case, below average) sewing skills, come here. Otherwise, do it yourself. read more

Being short of stature, it is difficult for me to buy pants off the rack. When I decided that I wanted to acquire a nice pair of winter hiking/ski pants, I knew I was going to have to have them shortened -- however the alteration was complicated by the fact the pants I wanted had a full leg zipper and integrated gators. All of the research I did pointed to Rainy Pass. So I pulled the trigger on the pants and called Rainy Pass for the alteration. The individuals I worked with were very friendly, knowledgable, and willing to help find the best solution for the alteration. I skied in the pants for a season and have been thrilled with the fit and the quality of the work. Cloudveil, I really do love you but if three of my zippers fail between two jackets, you might need to do some rethinking... Cloudveil had me ship two of my jackets here for warranty work on several broken/hard to zip zippers. Rainy Pass replaced the zippers and had my beloved jackets shipped back to me in under a week! Including shipping to and from! The repair work is obviously top notch, very well done. I can't even tell which zippers were replaced by looking at them ("was it the left or the right pocket???"). I would trust them with any of my gear to have it back to me looking better than before. Since this was warranty work provided by Cloudveil I can't comment on their prices but if you want the job done right, it's probably worth it. Especially when you think about the chunk of change you probably plunked down for the gear in the first place. read more

I took my grandson's favorite ski jacket to have a zipper repaired. It was repaired within two days and I was so impressed with the workmanship. The zipper was molded into the fabric to maintain the waterproof nature of the jacket and I did not think it was repairable. They even matched the red and white cording of the attachment on the pull. It started with me requesting a price inquiry with a picture of the damaged jacket needing repair, they got back to me that same day saying the repair was possible and would cost $55-$75 if I chose to send it in... after sending the item into the rainy pass shop (with high shipping costs), they reached back out saying that the repair was actually going to be hundreds of dollars and may not be possible at all. I am now left with the choice to either have them recycle my expensive damaged jacket after having paid to send it in, or pay even more $ to have them send back my damaged jacket. Here's hoping someone sees this and saves themselves the money and incredible headache. I've got a down bag I've owned for as long as I can remember and an older North Face Coriolis that have seen better days and need some attention. The two-way zipper on the bag has split and my tent had a pole break and pop through the sleeve several years ago. In true form, I immediately replaced the tent pole, but have just been living with the other problems for years. I don't do as much "high adventure" camping as I used to and I'm pretty much down to weekend trips and day hiking, so that's fine. However, if I want my gear to last, I should probably not neglect it, right? After trying to figure out how to do it myself, looking up local companies, and hearing that REI is just sending stuff to Rainy Pass nowadays, I bit the bullet and sent all my stuff to Seattle. Rainy Pass was very prompt with estimates and communication was awesome. I boxed up the down bag and the tent and shipped them out of Mailboxes & Such (a disappointment for another day...) and sent them off. I was notified by Rainy Pass (even before the shipper) that my stuff was there about a week later. Communication is awesome. They let me know that my old down bag was probably beyond repair and they didn't feel comfortable working on it. I think it's brittleness may have been overstated, but I understand not wanting to further ruin someone's gear. They were super nice about it and let me down gently over the course of a few emails. My tent's pole sleeves were repaired very well. The color used for the patches was a color on the tent, so while you can tell it's definitely aftermarket work patched on, it's not blatant. The patch looks great. It's not just a hole patch. It looks like they cut away the entire torn part and just made a small, new sleeve section. Great work. They were also kind enough to tell me which products I should use on the fly, which is starting to lose its seam tape. It's not cheap and it's not fast, but the work is top notch and the communication/customer service is great. I'm sad that my bag is done for, but on the other hand, they've probably added a lot more trips to my tent. I wouldn't hesitate to send anything else up there. read more

The staff here do incredible work. I've had 3 jackets taken here. Two of the jackets were gore-tex waterproof jackets for which I had tugged a minor hole. Of one of those two jackets, the staff there made the jacket even more stylish by using a different color patch within the color scheme of my jacket, so that the patch looks like it is part of the jacket instead of a repair patch. I've also gotten an entirely new zipper put in my down jacket, and the replacement zipper is even better than my original. You can't even tell that I got a new zipper in the jacket. Rainy Pass Repair truly does the most amazing work for technical, outdoors gear. REI, Arc'Teryx and a bunch of other outdoors companies send their repairs here. I'm so lucky to live in the same city as Rainy Pass. The only thing is that the repairs here are quite pricey ($131.40 for a zipper replacement, $50.37 for a patch replacement plus clean per jacket) but it is totally worth it, especially if you love your jackets. read more

Unprofessional, Overpriced and Self-Glorified Bottomline : Try to fix your problem on your own or other means before approaching these folks. They should be a last resort. What I don't like about any service is if act self-glorified and all-knowing even when they don't know about something. I would rather trust somebody who is upfront and straightforward. Two sections of my DAC tent-poles had a connecting insert broken. I did my research on the Internet and REI pointed me to these so-called professionals. I dismantled the tent-pole and took the two sections to the shop to find out if they could be fixed or need to be replaced. Since these are internal inserts, it is difficult to patch or fix. When I first entered an over-assuming employee, perhaps a newbie, asked me what the problem was. I explained the problem and presented her my question. She had no clue what a tent-pole was and trying to understand how the two sections fit. I was not expecting this. I was patient and explained in detail what the problem was. She told me it could be done and come back after a week. I was slightly hesitant as she was not sure. I asked if I could speak to a person who knows about this as I was here to determine whether this could be fixed specifically. She was reluctant and asked me what I mean by a person "who know about this stuff". Finally after much convincing, another employee stepped in. This employee understood the problem and went in to find if she had similar sections which she could replace it with. She came back with a couple of used sections which matched the diameter and used internal inserts. All that now was to be done is just saw off those sections to match the length of my section by a few centimeters. But she said, she cannot sell me these and I had to bring the rest of my tent-pole and it would take them a week to get back. And all of this would cost me close to $40 bucks. I did not get the point of all this. I did not mind the cost, but the bureaucracy was too much for me from a small business as this. I just stepped out and ordered a new full tent-pole for $46, so that I can use the sections from old pole in future repairs, rather than dealing with people like these. read more

These guys are so kick-butt great! They saved MY BUTT big time after a zipper meltdown. I was gifted a reallllllly nice expensive wool coat with removable hood. In a OCD perfectionist tendency I tried to alter it until it suddenly broke. I hadn't even wore the coat yet! I was a little skeptical since they seemed more about hardware, outdoor fabrics, and hardier zippers. But I couldn't deny the reviews raved about zippers more than any other place. SO i went for it. They listened to my concerns, (needed coat back fast before boyfriend finds out!), helped remedy the thing i was attempting to change, and even took my stylish new zipper I brought to put on it. I had them fix an Ibex shirt. Lightweight wool. They were recommended by Ibex, which doesn't repair its own stuff. Had a broken zipper. High quality work, as good as OEM. Not cheap and not fast.
