I used Rainy Pass to repair my tent, rain fly, and backpack after a multi-week trek in Patagonia where I overstuffed my pack, and my tent ended up flying into a tree. I, of course, only realized I should fix my stuff about a month before I'm leaving for my next hiking adventure. They fixed my stuff at a reasonable fee. If it wasn't for shipping cost, (I live on the other side of the universe according to Fedex), the repair cost would have been nominal. They were quick, expedited my order due to my time problems, professional, and accommodating. The repairs are stunning. My backpack looks brand spanking new. Somehow, it even feels more comfortable. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but seriously, you would never know. The repair to my tent, in the fly netting, looks like its there for some special purpose. The rain fly repairs were perfect. As someone who likes the ultra light scene, my scale wouldn't register the weight difference. My very beloved puffy down jacket had an unfortunate run-in with a rose bush - three large rips regurgitating billows of down. Rainy Pass repaired it to perfections with a single large patch and charged me less than the original estimate. When picking up the jacket, I intended to drop off another jacket to have its three broken zippers repaired. The technician told me replacing one small pocket zipper would cost around $90 because of the complicated labor involved - then she asked me to wait, and in just a few minutes she had repaired all three zippers at no charge. I brought in a Gore-Tex Pro jacket with a tear in a sleeve and a fair bit of blood on it from a fall. With the required washing the repair came to $170, but I got what I pad for; a solid repair to critical piece of gear that is covered by Rainy Pass and the manufacturers warranty. Sending it to the manufacturer for repair would have taken 2-3 weeks, so having a local authorized repair service is great! read more

I've been an occasional Rainy Pass customer for many years. A recent experience will keep me loyal for a long time to come, I predict. I have an old pair of ski pants that had begun to leak. Rainy Pass diagnosed that the tape on the seams needed to be replaced. I authorized that, and they did it, at a cost of $100. But on the next use I discovered the pants still leaked. I inferred the pants were giving out in too many ways to justify repair. When my wife took the pants back to Rainy Pass to report they still leaked, RP immediately--without my wife's asking for anything--offered to do further repair at no charge or to refund the $100. Rule #1: Never pick up a frightened kitty when you are wearing a North Face coat. If you do find yourself in this situation, let these folks fix it for you. I brought my coat to them and when I got it back I couldn't even find where it had been damaged. Rainy Pass Repair was the perfect answer to my laziness and incompetence. My super expensive, well-loved, down Montbell sleeping bag was in dire need of cleaning. The smell was developing its own personality, the fabric texture had achieved a greasy and gritty feel, and the feathers inside each compartment lay in sad, saggy clumps. Granted, its condition was a testament to my adventures, and though I had taken care to air it out immediately after each use and properly store it, the 6 years of heavy and (mostly) summer usage had reduced the bag's efficacy. I didn't have a front loading washer as recommended by manufacturers, much less one commercial-sized. I wanted to avoid the manual bathtub method. My local REI suggested that I take it to a Laundromat with some tennis balls and down detergent, but I didn't trust myself to do it correctly. Browsing through REI's website, I noticed Rainy Pass listed as a repair and cleaning partner. I e-mailed Rainy Pass for an estimate, and Lindsey replied within 48 hours and said at minimum it would be $54 ($38 cleaning + $16 return ship). Per the instructions I found on REI's website (note, not Rainy Pass's nor in Lindsey's e-mail), I bundled up my Montbell into an oversized box and shipped it via USPS for $25 with tracking and insurance. Not having heard anything from Rainy Pass for several days even after seeing USPS's delivery time, I called them. Lindsey said they had finished washing it already, and now were checking to see if it needed a refill on down. The next day, she left a voicemail saying they didn't need to add any extra down as the bag still looked really good, but she also added that they most likely wouldn't have been able to do it anyway due to the unique construction of my Montbell bag. I believed her: my bag is of Montbell's Super Stretch line, which uses a specialized elasticized stitching for maximum movement of the user. I had been curious as to how Rainy Pass would respond to this type of construction, and alas, now I know for future that they probably won't be able to do much in terms of down refill unless I paid boatloads more money. Anyway, I gave her my credit card info over the phone and she said it'd be out the door that day. They never gave me a FedEx tracking number for the return trip. I had forgotten to ask, so I had no idea who the shipper was and only had a vague timeline of when it would arrive. I got the bag back yesterday. It feels and smells so CLEAN! And puffy again! Almost the same as when I got it 6 years ago. I'm really excited - we'll be camping this November and I should be nice and toasty. Outdoor gear is EXPENSIVE. Repairs have to be done right. My kid tore an Atomic ski jacket on the second day out in the snow. It got caught in the lift. The jacket cost a couple hundred dollars. I was mad. I thought that the manufacturer would stand behind the product (OR does, for cryin' out loud). But no. The retailer let me know that Atomic would probably blame the user. So the retailer pointed me to these guys. The work was done right, at a reasonable cost. I live in Renton and don't have many reasons to go to this part of Seattle, so next time I'll probably use their mailing service. But when I need to fix a tent, sleeping bag, ski clothing... I sent in a lightweight puffy down jacket to repair 2 small tears completely inside a 1 1/2 square inch fabric panel. Postage there was about 10 bucks. I then received a quote for $66 plus postage of $9.00 to return it. The jacket was only 150 to start with, but it is my wife's favorite. I said fine thinking that I was already into this for $21.00 for postage. When I received the repaired jacket I found that an entire panel section (6 inches by two inches) had been replaced with fabric that was not the same texture or type. I guess they used whatever they had on hand instead of matching it better. Since it was black they must have figured it would blend in. Stitching quality was fine or I would have rated them only one star. Girl that gave me the quote on phone was kind of rude too as she rushed me along. Won't use them again. Was searching high and low for a perfect technical daypack per my own definition of "perfect". Wanted very specific features like panel loader, 42L, extra pockets, lash points for poles and ice axe, daisy chain, mesh pouch, etc etc. Spent years looking and buying/returning packs and was getting very frustrated. These guys were great. I was looking for someone to put grommets in the corners of a large piece of cloth I bought in Africa, so I could hang it on the wall. They told me they had a $16 minimum charge, and that seemed reasonable. (I see Brian F said they had a $50 minimum charge, so not sure why there was a difference, but maybe there is different minimum charge for really small jobs.) The woman at the counter, instead of just doing what I asked and putting two grommets in the corners, looked at the length of the cloth and suggested they put in four across the top so it would not sag. What a great, simple suggestion that totally changed (for the better) how the cloth looks now that I have it hanging on my wall. They also brought out several samples of grommets so we could strategize on the best one to use based on compatibility with the colors in the fabric, as well as with the hardware I was going to use to hang it. What a great level of effort for a customer who obviously wasn't going to be spending a lot of money. Rainy Pass, I didn't spend much money this time, but I will be back. Another satisfied short dude here. They don't make pants in my size. Every pair I own is altered. Living in LA I have a good tailor for regular clothes. But when it came to my technical outdoor gear I was at a loss. I got used to walking all over my way too long snowboard pants until I found rainy pass. My sister lives in Seattle so I waited till I was coming up for a visit and threw a new pair of gore tex pants in my bag. Dropped in at the end of the day and put on the pants. The folks at rainy pass made some measurements and the a few days later they called me for shipping and payment info. The pants arrived today and are perfect. The alterations don't look like alterations. Looks like the pants came from the factory this way. They even preserved all the knee articulation and gators. I searched for local repair shops that had less than stellar reviews and turn around times so I decided to use the experts, Rainy Pass, to repair a tear in a raincoat and a tear in a sleeping bag. I requested an email quote and received a response in less than 24 hours. The directions to send and indicate repairs were clear. I received confirmation when they received my items with a confirmation of the same quote I had previously received via email. I was quoted 2-3 weeks and although it did take a bit longer to receive my items, I was in no hurry and the work done was phenomenal. Everything was very smooth and communication was consistent. After nearly 10 years of hard use, the zippers on both doors of my REI Quarter Dome 3 tent (original model) were wearing out. The zipper would come undone behind the slider where I'd just zipped it shut. When I called Rainy Pass Repair, I was immediately impressed by the professionalism of the woman on the phone. As many other reviewers have described, she gave me a couple of options. It hadn't occurred to me that grit would be less likely to get stuck in between the zipper teeth (and wear out the sliders and teeth faster) if the teeth were bigger. So for a little more money and a slight weight increase to the tent, I had them replace the zippers with heavier duty ones. I received the tent back in less time than expected. The workmanship was so incredibly top notch that I couldn't see the tiniest bit of evidence that the zippers weren't the ones originally installed at the factory, other than the fact that they looked cleaner! Regarding other reviewers' complaints about cost: Professional workmanship and customer service like this is a bargain at the rates they charge. This is a top quality professional outfit, not some 1-person shop in somebody's garage. Here's a little Business 101: They have the cost of a building (mortgage/lease, utilities, insurance, maintenance, etc.); they have to pay their employees and presumably provide benefits (not just the repair staff, but also the people who order materials, do bookkeeping, etc.); they have to stock large quantities of expensive, high quality materials; they have to pay for advertising; and they still have to make a profit after breaking even on all this stuff, or what's the point in having the business? The fact that backpackers tend to "not have very deep pockets" isn't their problem. It's a business, not a charity. Welcome to the real world - the one where you get what you pay for! read more

The zipper on my Big Agnes Copper Spur UL1 was broken. I love that tent and was not willing to let it go. I contacted them and asked to put in a sturdier zipper, with the understanding that it will add some weight, but prolong the life of the tent. I mailed in the tent. They made the repair and mailed it back to me after a few days. The repair was excellent, as requested, and the price was reasonable. Great service. I bought a Lole coat for about $400 from Dick's Sporting Goods 8 months ago. My zipper broke because it was jammed by the door upon closing causing it to fall out of alignment. I couldn't return it to Dicks nor the Lole company. The Lole company informed me of Rainy Pass Repair. I sent Rainy an email w a video to show them how the zipper wasn't lined up. Their staff quickly responded and gave me detail instructions on about how much it will cost, how to print out the form to repair, ship it and how they will contact me to give me their final quote of how much it will cost upon actual assessment. I sent my coat in the beginning of December n received it back REPAIRED b4 Christmas. And even better is that they only had to replace the sliders which cost $18. I emailed to see if they could repair my ski pants (good rip in bright orange fabric in brand new pants that went through both layers). They got back to me with a price range right away with directions on how to get them the pants.
