After a run of not-so-great experiences a while back, when a bunch of us were in Hyde Park the other day and craving Indian food, I suggested we give Rajun Cajun a shot. A couple of the sides were still too bland in comparison to how amazing they used to taste, but we all loved the butter chicken and samosas! It tasted just how I remembered from years ago when I used to frequent this place about once a week for my Indian food fix. Yum! We were pleasantly surprised by this Indian Cajun spot in Hyde Park. My husband traveled extensively throughout India for work and fell in love with the food. He enjoyed the vegetable curry and saag paneer far more than he planned to. The tandoori chicken and samosas were perfectly seasoned. It is a steam table service so you can literally pick exactly what you want. They also have fried chicken, candied Yams, peach cobbler, and mac/cheese. But we focused on the Indian offerings and are glad that we did because they were delicious! read more

I have a love for all types of India food, majority of the places that make my favorite "butter chicken" is ether too spicy or tasteless. There is no one location that makes it in the middle with medium heat. Rajun had a butter chicken combo which comes with a sampling of items such as (1) plain paratha, (1) Spicy Samosa, (1) Spicy veggy curry, (1) small rice, packaged in a box ($16). I asked if I can substitute one of the spicy veggy curry to something less spicy and the server was going to, but the owner behind the register said the food was not that spicy. That is a person who heat level is higher than my taste buds. If you like your food high in spicey than Rajun has all the dishes you like. Rajun Cajun's samosas are the best I've had. The sweet sauce is a nice complement to the savoriness of the samomas. I also really enjoy their spinach paneer. I've had this dish at other places where I'd experienced a slimy texture or bitter taste. You don't get that here. However I do with the portion size was larger for the price. Overall, a nice place in Hyde Park for Indian food. It's a bit pricey for a carry-out lunch but very tasty. read more

Good food, not excellent but good and solid. I stopped in pretty often when I still lived in Chicago, as it was the only place with Indian food anywhere near me. First, I want to respond to some of the one-star reviews... I'm not sure if someone had a disagreement with the owners, but some of them look a bit suspect. Others complain the food is not authentic and is Americanized. I guess I'd argue they know their clientele as they've been operating for decades. Overall, if you visit another, more upscale Indian restaurant you can probably find better. However, that's not what Rajun Cajun is. It's a takeout place and they make their food and keep it in chafing dishes for quick service. I've never had bad food here and the service has always been just fine. If you go later in the day, people may be tired from working long hours, so give them a break from your excessive entitlement. As I said, RC is great for quick, hot takeout. I always liked their boxed meals, which include entree, side, samosa, paratha and now I forget what else because I haven't been there in a couple years. I've always found the food to be flavorful and to hit the spot. It's not the absolute hottest (spice), but it does have a kick and the favors are good. I usually get the chicken curry meal. If you stop in, take a minute to read the wall which is covered in a mural depicting a large number of postcards that used to be posted to the same wall before they renovated several years ago. I used to come to Rajun Cajun all the time when I was in college 20 years ago. It was my first experience at an Indian restaurant. I recently came back to Hyde Park for the first time in many years and was delighted that this place is still here and hasn't changed. The butter chicken is my favorite rendition of the dish. It's nothing fancy, but the spices are complex and the heat level is just right. The samosas and chana masala are also awesome. The parotha and rice are the perfect starch accompaniments. The Cajun options aren't bad either. I took my little kid here and he gave his seal of approval to the mac and cheese and cornbread. I've been to places on Devon, and I've gone to fancy Indian restaurants in new cities after moving away from Chicago. Rajun Cajun was always my favorite and still is. read more

I stopped in to get a quick bite. The place was clean, and no one was inside when I arrived. The men behind the counter were not very friendly at first and had serious demeanors. The food was already made to order. I asked what the food was and they explained the dishes to me. There was not much flavor in the food for it being Indian food, it all had a sweet hint to it...not the bold flavors I expected. It was a Saturday as usual so I opted for the weekly fish dinner, which came with samosa, parotha and 2 sides (one with peas, one with spinach) and a side of peach cobbler. The fish was HOT but not overwhelming, in a great tomato base sauce. Everything else was ok except the peach cobbler. I am always just ok with it; maybe too much nutmeg/cloves, and the peaches seemed brownish. We came on Christmas Eve and were surprised that they were even open. The food is kept hot behind a counter and you choose what you want, with different combos on the menu. I got the lamb curry combo with cauliflower curry, vegetable samosa, and paratha. My friend got the fried chicken dinner with Mac and cheese. I liked what I got, the lamb was tender and the samosa was tasty. The cauliflower dish was watery and thin though, and the paratha didn't taste fresh. My friend said she liked her food. I was a little confused when I arrived since I thought this might be a Southern food restaurant but it was more Indian in presentation: but they do have "Soul Food" as well. I opted for the Indian, it was a little unclear how their process worked since they were minimally communicative about things, I ordered and they walked in the back and I just waited a bit, but after a while it was clear this might take longer so I approached the cashier to pay and then timidly went to sit down since I was not sure what was going to happen next. Several minutes later the food was ready, it was good and spicier than I imagined (if I had the choice I would have requested less spicy, but they didn't have a spice level request). Limited seating but it wasn't too crowded. There is a huge counter separating the cashier and the customer which was a little confusing since you don't know if you should get hear it or not. Logistics/flow/service were not friendly to new customers but now that I know what to do they are great. read more

The food was good. I'm giving them 2 stars for leveraging a $10 minimum for card transactions. Hear me out; I make a sizable order, buying two curries, muffin, sides, and a dessert. I pay, of course, then eat, theeen want another muffin. When I ask to purchase another muffin not only do they refuse to accept my card despite just making a larger purchase, but lady broke and threw away one muffin, then (I'm assuming) had to toss a second one after I refused to spend $10 for an extra muffin. read more

Excellent service and food hit the spot! Space is very small and has a few tables. You walk in and get in line like at a cafeteria and see your options on a hot line in front of you. Indian food + Southern Food. Not a fusion, but side-by-side. This place is a full 4.5 stars for my husband, brother and I. The butter chicken is creamy and moist. Best butter chicken we've had in Chicago for sure. The Rajam (kidney bean curry) is a great compromise between flavor and vegetarian. Nice kick with mellow tomato bases. The tandoori chicken is moist and tasty. The chai is rich and creamy, and well worth it's price. We also order the raita to cool the tongue when the spices get to be too hot. I enjoy Indian cuisine, and being a Hyde Park resident , who lives maybe 100 ft away from this restaurant; I have found it convenient. As a Loyola Alumnus , and being close to Devon Ave for a number of years in my youth - I have enjoyed many Indian and Pakistani restaurants in Rogers Park, so that is the experience on which I've set my expectations for good Indian cuisine (to me). Pros: - Close by - Overall - not bad on the taste for Indian cuisine - Soul food availability is interesting , but I'd do Soul Shack if I wanted soul food, or Virtue across the street (which is more expensive, but is also a white table cloth experience) Cons: - The temperatures can be inconsistent - Not crazy about styrofoam containers in 2022. - Bedside manner could be a bit better ; very cool service (that's not a compliment). I don't expect a high five and a back-rub, when I walk in the door , but I do expect courtesy reciprocated if that's how I greet and approach the folks behind the counter. ‍ Overall - not bad at all. Plus it's a place that's been around, and has endured in Hyde Park over the years. The folks in their place are friendly and the food really does smell great! I lm a big fan of India cuisine. I literally popped in here for a quick snack to calm down my appetite. So, I opted for a couple of Southern food items...cornbread and Mac & Cheese. The Cornbread was decent. The Mac & Cheese....No!! Either the chef or owner does not care at all or this was Mac & Cheesewater. There was no flavor. It tastes like cheese water a with macaroni noodles. Somebody either 1. Best Indian food ever When I lived in Los Angeles and would visit Chicago/ Hyde Park area, this was my go to place! I always stopped here before I left the city. it's probably the only fast food Indian restaurant I know. And the food is amazing! Food was good. Now on to the reason for the 1 star. Be very careful if you pay with cash and get change back. The older lady will short you when you bring this up, act like you're trying to cheat them. Went there once, started to walk away and was out the door as I counted my change and was short about 25cent. I put my hand in my pocket as well where I had other change so I figured I must have miscounted but something irked me about it, felt I was cheated. So I purposely went back, the same older lady was at the register. My meal came to $14.17 and I paid with a $20. She gave me $5.43 back. This time I stayed at the register, asked for a receipt (which she kept acting like something was wrong with the printer and couldn't) and I counted the change she returned in front of her. She shorted me $0.40 and I said "where's the forty cents you're trying to short me?" She then accused me of trying to rip them off, got loud and stormed off. The man gave me my $0.40 cent and seemed irritated to do so. I take it this is not the first and only time they play a bit of sleight of hand. Be warned. read more

I don't usually write reviews but this place pissed me off. First, nothing about this place is ragin' or Cajun. It's an Indian restaurant and it's a bad one. The butter chicken I had was barely flavorful. The chicken chunks tasted dry, WHILE being covered in sauce. And the basmati rice was hard. Second, they say they offer "indian soul food." What about this place is "soul food?" Because they offer poorly-seasonex fried chicken? Their sign says they've been there over 20 years. PLEASE READ BEFORE EATNG HERE: I recently faced the unfortunate experience of getting food from Rajun Cajun in Hyde Park after a long meeting and despite my intense hunger, I quickly recognized that taking the first bite was a major mistake. They promote a "soul food" menu, and I feel like a "Rajun" fool for giving it a try; it turned out to be an absolute disaster. The macaroni and cheese was utterly bland, resembling little more than mushy yellow pasta. The sweet potatoes were flavorless and had an undercooked raw texture. As for the chicken oh GOD, it was old, greasy, and over fried with a hint of "BURNT". This has undoubtedly been the worst meal I have ever had, and I'm paying for it as I make my way to the bathroom. It's blows my mind how any restaurant could serve what they think is good and edible food. I'm not sure what they hoped to accomplish by featuring "soul food" in an Indian resturant, but it seems like a misguided effort aimed at profiting from the local black community. "Rajun Cajun" even the name is misleading! there's nothing Cajun about this place. They should really stick to Indian food--yet even then, I will never get food from this place again. read more

The food was overall pretty good, the samosas were good and the butter chicken was too. The naan was just okay and the gulab jamun came cold which I didn't like. The real issue came with a huge lack of covid safety precautions and customer service. I walked in and saw neither of the workers wearing their masks properly and what seemed to be the owner sitting on his phone with no mask at all. I walked up to the counter and said "This is my first time here" hoping to get some guidance on how to order, etc. but I was met with silence. The owner was on his phone the whole time and didn't even acknowledge us. Usually, this wouldn't bother me much but the lack of proper PPE made me leave a review. On Thanksgiving, I also had the bad experience of placing an order with them, thinking they were open. They took the order online but never notified me they were closed. There was no info on their website, on their phone line or on the store front that they were closed for Thanksgiving so I was pretty upset that they still took my order anyway. I got not apology, just a refund a few days later. I would NOT recommend going here if there is someone in your home who is high-risk for Covid-19. One of the only places open during the brutal weather in Chicago last week. I had their butter chicken, rice, samosa, and mango lassi. I have been coming here for well over a decade. I never had a problem. The wife of the owner is always warm and welcoming. I have noticed her husband is kinda rude but he was never rude to me personally so I was like f-it. My mom also likes this spot as well! Sooo my mom went in Rajun Cajun on this past Friday the food was so on point she came back Saturday. She ordered her Butter Chicken meal and the husband checked my mom out. He also checked her out the day before. She used her credit card Friday with no problem. She handed him her credit card again Saturday and he asked her.....Don't you have cash? I'm not sure why I thought this place was over priced before. I got take out dinner from here yesterday and everything was good, and we got a lot of food for our money! For 4 people we ordered 4 vegetarian meals and shared all of the sides. (For $9 plus tax each person got a samosa, paratha, rice, and 2 veggie sides). Everything was good, and we had plenty of food (a 5th person came by and had a full meal on the leftovers, he just didn't get a samosas or paratha). Everyone was stuffed and happy! The butter chicken was pretty good, 6 out of 10. 1 star because they put the food in styrofoam cups. Two combination meals comes with 6 styrofoam cups with plastic lids not able to be recycled.
