3.5 We've been to Rakuzen a few times but it's been a while. Noticed the prices go up and down. I remember liking their hot/cooked food as well as their sushi. The lunch price was about $26 AYCE. There's a checklist with all the options; we did 1 sheet at a time for my family. Larger groups can share a variety of rolls since 6-8 pcs each, and some have larger than bite-size pieces. After a while also, they started tasting similar to one another. I remember liking the sashimi appetizers before but this time, there's a thicker sauce on a few of them which I didn't like. For appetizers/cooked food, I liked their flaky/not-oily shrimp tempura, and beef negimaki. We had to be mindful of how much we ordered after the first 2 rounds. I actually felt full quickly. I started the New Year with AYCE Buffet in Elmhurst. I ordered the bento box and sashimi Platter for my parents for Christmas, and they loved it. Therefore, I might as well give it a try. When I arrived it was cold and not crowded. The staff asked if I wanted a la carte or AYCE. Obviously, I chose AYCE. I was seated and given four sheets of items to check off on to start. There were some fair stipulations, such as the 90-minute time limit, fee for leftovers, and from the sashimi appetizer section; they only allowed 1 item from that list to order per person. The food was good, and sashimi is worth getting. The only drawback is that I don't have control of the quantity of the items ordered. As a result, I got full quickly, which may have been a blessing because they regulate and honor that 90-minute time frame. The fish is pretty fresh and the cooked food selection were abundant. Some things, like the fried oysters and tempura were a little greasy, but the salads and soups were all pretty tasty. The staff is friendly and attentive, but like many AYCE sushi buffet, you never get 100% of what you order. We placed an order for fried fish balls 3x and it came out 0x! They do charge for unfinished food during the All you can eat but overall the quality of fish to the price is not bad. However, there are some days where it is a miss. Decided to try Rakuzen on a whim one day since my sister loves to order party platters from there. I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the sheer size of the platters and it is a lot to eat for two people. Luckily, there were some great regular and special roll combos that we were able to get. We ended up ordering a 3 classic roll combo along with a 2 classic and 1 special roll combo. This was more than enough for the two of us. We ordered tuna avocado, yellowtail scallion, spicy yellowtail crunch, spicy scallop, spicy salmon crunch, and a Botan Roll. The rolls were stuffed with plenty of fish and tasted good. However, the fish didn't taste amazingly fresh. The Botan is a good option for those who like a mix of tuna, salmon, and eel, topped with a sweet sauce. Razuken is a great budget option for satisfying a sushi craving in a pinch but it definitely isn't my favorite sushi spot and the fish quality isn't prime. I absolutely love this place. They have an all you can eat option where you get a huge variety of dishes. Their rock shrimp is absolutely delicious along with their kani and seaweed salad. Not only do the have different hand rolls and sushi, they also have teriyaki and dumplings, etc. They also serve you a complimentary hot tea which goes perfect with the food. Their food is always fresh and their service is extremely quick. As soon as you finish your dish, they are making room on the table for your next dish. Saw too many negative reviews so I had to put my 2 cents in. The sushi is so so delicious and flavorful. Lots of options from appetizers, rolls, nigiri, and a lot of special rolls. The pieces are very big and filling (including the fish). The lobster eel roll- oh my gosh. Forgot the specific special roll name for it. Fair warning, the nigiri do have a lot of rice compared to other places so order some miso soup or something to help you get all that rice down. We opt for the AYCE menu around 4PM and we ordered a ton of appetizers and a good amount of sushi + rolls. It wasn't a lot since we were hungry and there's the 3 of us. Anyway, the sushi items came out and we pretty much finished within 15 minutes except for the uni. We had ordered 6 pieces (2 for each of us) but the moment the uni sushi got to the table, it was milky and discolored. Fresh uni aren't wet and have a very vibrant orange/yellowish color. These were absolutely off colored. We mentioned it a few times to the waiters and had them note down that the uni was not fresh. My friend tried it and it was super bitter/sour tasting. My mom's a big sushi fan, so it's become one of our go-to celebratory dinner options. During a COVID Mother's Day, when we called around multiple restaurants to try and order a sushi platter, we quickly learned we were not the only ones who felt like sushi to celebrate Mom. Most places in Flushing were so swamped, they were no longer taking orders. So as a last-ditch effort, I found Rakuzen on Yelp, gave them a call, and surprisingly they accepted our order! When I showed up about 30 minutes after the pick-up time I'd told them, my food was ready to go by the door; I paid and was on my way. The sushi platter is smaller and pricier than you would find at some places in Flushing, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose. We ordered the Platter D for $75 (menu says $70 - possible upcharge for Mother's Day?), which contained 25 pieces of sashimi, 15 pieces of nigiri, 3 classic maki rolls, and 1 special maki roll. The platter was beautiful and colorful, and didn't contain a lot of fillers, like shredded radish or the fake grass. Wasabi, soy sauce, and spicy mayo were packaged separately. The sushi itself was also very tasty, but a couple of the rolls were gimmicky and felt less like sushi and more like random ingredients rolled up in rice, like spam and egg. Rakuzen is either a love it or hate it kind of establishment. It's easy to love the obvious: sushi for days, all you can eat options at a reasonable price and the constant Jay Chou playlist. it's also easy to hate the place too: service is slow, the sushi is pretty low quality, and the overall scene is sort of tacky. The restaurant is actually a lot larger than it looks. There are seats galore for all kinds of group action. There is this lingering odor in the air, which is some kind of a funky mix of cleaning chemical and seafood fishiness. The Chinese sushi chefs are in the back cranking out rolls / nigiri left and right. Since COVID times, they've been doing a lot of takeout and delivery, but now that indoor dining is back, I imagine folks will be coming here after shopping at Queens Mall. As previously noted, the fish quality won't impress too many palates. Presentation is halfway decent, but keep the expectations pretty low and all will be well. I usually try to stick with the sashimi options, but their handrolls are fairly hefty portion wise. I have this strange fondness for their trashy hot food (fried oysters, bring me another!), which should not be priority over the sushi. if at all possible, coming with a slightly larger group means being able to order a little bit of everything. Given all Chinese AYCE sushi spots throughout the borough, Rakuzen stands out less but gets kudos for location and ambiance. I arrived with two friends at 2 pm. There were several open tables; we asked to sit at a table in the back corner and were told that table was for larger parties. We understood and sat at a similar table up front. Shortly after we were seated, a party of two people arrived and were seated at the table we'd earlier requested. We did not say anything, but we all were pretty mad that they seated just 2 at the table for "larger parties". Later, while we ordered, as is customary, I opted for a teriyaki Bento box, while my friends ordered apps and Sushi. The waitress proceeded to tell my friends that I was not permitted to share their food. I had no plans to share, but after, she and two other staff watched our table like hawks to make sure I didn't eat any of their food. I found this extremely unnerving. It ended up that when my friends ordered their Sushi, the plate they received contained 50 pieces, which they were told they had to eat all of, because no matter what, they'd be charged for every piece and could not have it wrapped to take home what they did not eat. Ultimately, one friend ordered some Sushi for her daughter, and was able to convince the server to combine what was left with her newer order.
