Been a long time customer, but customer service has gone downhill over the last year (with the exception of Araceli and Lana), and some are borderline rude. Self checkout doesn't work when there are more than a few items being purchased. Whoever thought self check scanning was a good idea in a grocery store, where there are so many variables and people tend to buy more than a few items, did not think that through at all! Not impressed by this Ralph's. Good selection overall, big spacious store. Prices are outrageous even with your Ralph's card. But what really drops it down is quality of product. Almost 1/3 of the bagged fruits/veggies had 'close out' stickers on them. What? Trying to sell old or day of fruits/veggies as close outs? Other, seemingly too apparent, examples of this 'the item is going stale or old and we want you to buy it instead of us throwing it away' are in the grocery area. On Friday, March 11, 2016, I was shopping at Ralphs for groceries. It was not raining when I arrived; however, it was pouring rain when I checked out. I figured I would have to wait it out in front of the store for the rain to stop, otherwise I would be drenched if I attempted to run to my car. Next thing I know, one of the Ralphs employees, Andreas, ran up with his umbrella and said he would walk me to my car, while covering me with the umbrella. He said as soon as we get to my car, I could hop in and he would unload my groceries so I wouldn't get wet. Now that's what I call exceptional customer service ! The Ralphs on Otay Lakes Road is excellent! Why? Their staff is very helpful, friendly, and professional. The evening manager, Carmen is one of the best managers in regards to leadership and customer service that I have ever met. Also, her staff is friendly. Angelica is very nice and helpful. Now you have to understand that this is quite a beautiful store, and it has a very large variety of everything... However the prices are just out of sight... I'm not a cheap guy but I certainly don't like burning money.... Every item, I mean every item was well over the price that I usually pay at Smart & Final or at the big box stores like Walmart..... If something cost $2.50 at a regular store it was $3.50 at Ralphs.... And on and on. I understand that it is very difficult in Retail and places like Ralphs has a lot of competition... To be honest I have been avoiding this store. Only due to the fact that the customer service from the register representatives are not trained correctly. Half a year ago I came in and bought alcohol. They did not accept my ID because my MILITARY ID BECAUSE THE CARD WAS A DIFFERENT COLOR. TO BE HONEST ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW? My wife has. Served for the military and just re enlisted for another 6 years and I have to go through this every time I come to this Ralph's. THIS PARTICULAR RALPH'S. I hope that the higher ups. not the sTORE MANAGER because apparently she tried to tell me she wouldn't accept my id only THIS TIME. You all need to train your register reprsentatives to look at an ID. it is a military ID. how in the hell would I make a fake military id. BY FAR THIS IS THE WORST RALPH'S EVER. This Ralph's is one of the worst and one of the few left in San Diego county. I can see why they closed so many of them. Second time I came in within the last month and second time I waited in line for more then 15 minutes. Getting a cashier to open seems like a chore , their attitudes are always so negative. The prices are the highest in the neighborhood, they need to lower them to be able to compete against Costco, crappy Walmart and the Smart and Final down the street. Only reason I came in was to get my rain check filled from a prior Ad on an item they ran out of. Made me feel like I was a low life for pulling it out and asking them to honor their own rain check. It's not worth the hassle, long waits and rude associates. Costco and Smart and Final will be my only choices, no need for rain checks or coupons and they make me feel like they appreciate my shopping at their stores. read more

Everytime I go here, the employees are always friendly. Their welcoming seems like one of those neighborhood markets you'd see in Pleasantville or the Stepford Wives; not in a weird way but in a good way. Although I live closer to a different Ralphs, I tend to go here more often due to the customer service alone...go to this place and you can expect to pick up a Coke and a smile. read more

I always love places that have self check out. Though, there are those times when other customers can't figure out how to follow the touch screen. That's not the stores fault though. For the most part, check out is pretty fast. They also added a second Redbox so the line for that isn't as long as it used to be. Unfortunately it's inside the store, so when Ralphs closes, so does the Redbox. Just go up 4 or 5 blocks at USA gas along East Palomar and use the one they have outside. read more

I was pleased when I saw that this Ralph's added Choice grade meat to their offerings since Von's only usually carries inferior "Rancher's Reserve" (which means nothing) beef. So I decided to splurge a bit and bought some Choice Tri Tip that looked good. I was disappointed when I unwrapped the beef and took it out because the underside of each piece was choked with gobs of thick fat (not marbled in) and sinewy silver strips of inedible connective tissue. After I spent a long time trimming all that poor quality junk off, I was hoping that at least the beef would taste good. But after marinating and grilling it, the meat was chewy with gristle and tough areas I had to throw out. What a waste of money. If Ralph's is going to offer Choice beef at a premium price, they need to package an honest product, not hide inferior cuts with unwanted fat and gristle in the overpriced packages. I prefer the fresher and lower cost produce at Sprout's (formerly Henry's). Now if I'm going to splurge for high-quality beef, I might as well pay the Whole Foods price and get a really good cut. Ralph's really disappointed me. I should have returned the beef and complained, but I had already served it and returning a piled of cooked gristle seemed gross. Otherwise, I like this Ralph's but it's way overpriced, just like Von's and Albertson's are for food. Mostly I limit my purchases to "loss-leaders" and items on super-sale. read more

We've shopped here since we moved to the area in 1999 and there are cashiers that have been there since that time. They always greet us with a smile even though my kids are often not smiling. There is always someone to help us find products and their prices and sales make it affordable to feed our family of 6. read more

I decided to shop in this store because I have received a free gift card from my job. This store is terribly dirty and unorganized. Also, they stole from me. I went this location to shop and decided to cash my scratcher. I have won $100 cash and 2 free tickets for free play and they refused to give me the two winning tickets. They only gave me the cash but they wouldn't give me the 2 winning free tickets. Employees are thieves!! I have been playing scratches and this the first time I have encountered this. Thieves!! Today I visited the Otay Lakes Road location to purchase a birthday balloon bouquet for a friend of mine. Angelica from the floral department was awesome. Not only did she provide me with the best customer service, but she makes the best balloon bouquets out of all the other locations I've been to. I'm only going to her from now on. who: not sure if all the ralph's have it, but for sure this location. what: 50% off specials in the frozen food section's... just make sure u check the expiration dates. where: didn't really notice the ambiance. haha.. i was too caught up w/the deals i came across...but the cashier and bagger were nice, called me "ma'am" and there was a greeter at the door-not sure for what though. when: i dropped by today.030109. after class. i was only going to get some popsicles to give my youth group. why: sharing b/c i came across, probably the best sale items in a grocery store i've found = 99 cent hot/lean pockets. so get yours while the sale lasts. i got a whole stash in the freezer. good enough to take to work for lunch -50cent meal, or to feed bro's homies when i can't eat them no mo-anymore. how: definitely going to check out the sales again once the hot pockets are gone. read more

I have mixed feelings on how to rate this grocery store. The staff is usually friendly, especially Aracely, she's great, but the bathroom horrendous!!!! I had to take my son to the restroom and when I got out I felt as if I had some infectious bacteria!!! If it wasn't because my son had to go at that precise moment, I would have walked out. This was very surprising, given the fact that the store is usually really clean. I won't be using that bathroom anytime soon! Yuck!! read more

I was just in my neighborhood store and was very pleased with the service AGAIN! I called in advance to ask the meat department if they had an item that I really need for a holiday dinner and COCO was so helpful. She was very professional and friendly on the phone and put the items aside for me so it would be easier to get them once I arrived. She even came out from behind the counter and handed them to me in person. AWESOME! Then at check out, my cashier LANA was very efficient and friendly even though the store looked pretty busy and showed no signs of letting up. She just kept talking on the phone while she was trying to check my groceries but she was so distracted she took forever and ignored me when I asked how to put my phone number in for my club card so I walked out. Nancy, our cashier, was so wonderful and had such a good personality. I came to write a review just because of her. She works hard and she deserves a raise. Every time we come, no matter how busy or hectic, she is positive, outgoing, and a breath of fresh air. We need more people like this working at our stores. Go Nancy!
