Deli Area is not appetizing. Never in a million years, would I imagine writing a review like this. But I feel so sick to my stomach, I must warn you. Overall, the store was nicely laid-out & looked very clean. I usually go to the Ralphs on Irvine, less than 1mile away, but I was running errands in the area. I was looking for a very simple Cucumber Greek Salad to serve as an appetizer. I should have gone with my gut when I saw the display. Here is a taste description: Overloaded slimey feta cheese, watery-sludge texture, with tasteless bell-pepper, & soggy cucumbers. I almost feel like the deli girl was warning me, when she asked if I wanted to taste-test. I thought maybe I was being too critical when I got back home & finally had a bite. Employees are VERY rude and disrespectful. I tried to fill my prescription here and the pharmacist denied my insurance because he was unfamiliar with the company. I then went to CVS down the street who had no problem accepting the same card. Do not recommend going to this location what so ever. read more

While the remodel of the store is much better, the service is extremely lacking and the constant price cheating is ridiculous. Over 50% of my trips result in wrong pricing scans and management is not too happy to help, always with an attitude and never in a friendly manner or sorry for the mistakes. This review is specifically directed towards the management at this location. First off, our organization confirmed to have a fundraiser a week in advance through the phone, and we were approved to hold the event. The day of, we came in and spoke to the manager named Eric. He gave us permission and confirmation in person. A few moments later, he came out with his supervisor and straight up lied in front of or faces, claiming that he never gave us approval and proceeded to tell us we had to leave. If you made a mistake, then you should be a decent human and own up to it instead of lying just to look good in front of your supervisor. This is very disrespectful and unprofessional of Eric, and I suggest this place re-evaluates how they train their store managers. read more

I love this store for groceries! Good selection! Lots of organic produce! Every time I have came here I have had a great experience but tonight the cashier Wendy was not friendly at all and wouldn't even make eye contact. It was such a poor experience and she was super rude and you could tell she wanted to get out of the store ASAP. Not a good example of the Ralph's Brand. Store employees are okay but not professional. Bakery person sits in a chair by the door. Why? If security is an issue, put in a rent-a-cop and show you mean it. Food, the most important part, is a huge disappointment. The meat department has no interesting cuts or types of meat. Just the typical ground burger, Italian sausage, standard cuts of pork, beef and chicken. I saw no bison, ground turkey, veal, or lamb. Veggies are sorely lower quality and if you don't eat the standard broccoli, carrots, cauliflower...well..you are pretty much out of luck. Tomatoes are really bad. The worst organic I've tasted. It may say organic but they all have no taste, probably gmo seeds. Every avocado was mush and in my opinion, not for human consumption. I bought 2 at different times. Both were rotten. I like to cook. I shopped a lot at Ralph's before moving here recently. I still like to cook but will travel outside the area from now on, probably not at a Ralph's. Literally pathetic when you can't have a store that closes at a certain time, yet 10 minutes before the time it is supposed to close at, your turned away at the door and, despite the other shoppers you point out already inside the store that you can visibly see with shopping carts down the aisle and the fact that the presumed "manager" (or lack thereof...) Turning you away in the parking lot doesn't care if your only getting one single item, refuses to let someone else get it for you even if it's an employee of the store or someone already inside that I offered to give the money to if I can't go inside the "open" store myself.... Why was the several people and myself turned away before even going inside you might ask (I'm sure the Ralph's Corporate/Financial Department just loves denying money from being spent in the store, cause guess where I won't be shopping again, not that it's even allowed evidently)? This was all due to "security concerns" and if that's not just flat out insulting and rude to tell to a customer as if they're a potential criminal, then I think an HR rep should come down to do some attitude and customer service checks when the manager finds such a belittling degradation of a comment to be appropriate. If there was such a concern, why were any of the people still shopping even allowed to continue, are they better than the outsiders because that would seem to be the case here. And the real question to be asked is this. Why is it that Ralph's, presumably trying to make a profit in their stores, would even hire a manager who does such a poor job at running one of their stores that they stand at the door and insult customers they turn away due to "security concerns" that, if the store was better managed, would not be such a paranoid concern in the first place? Especially considering I've never in my life seen such a thing where an open store will turn away "security concerns"/customers before they're even closed and not allow them to shop? Like what on Earth do you allow to happen under your management to the extent where they do this kind of thing? How much theft do you have to imagine taking place here for this kind of occurrence exactly, cause your just burning money and future profit like a fireplace burns wood on Christmas, and I hope that changes cause there's too many stores on this street to deal with a joke like that, and I'll choose them. read more

I can understand how sometimes the lines are long and service is slow, but I have to say I'm good with this store. The organic section is great, fresh and frozen and that's mostly all I buy anyhow. Parking is always easy and never a problem. I don't get cooked/prepared food here, so I'm not sure how that goes. But like I said: Organic section rocks! read more

The 2 stars is only for the deli/fried chicken. Overall it deserves a 3-4 Don't bother reading this unless you like fried chicken, hot sauce, collard greens, fried okra, etc (okay, that just excluded 92.2% of the people in Newport because this isn't meant to be a full review... it's an f'n grocery store, you should know basically what to expect). -- No Ralphs in a 5 mile radius to the 92663 has f'n frozen battered okra. I've called and been to 3-4 locations throughout Newport, and nobody carries it. A market in Costa Mesa carries it, and I'll have to give a shout out to that location. NOTE: Stater Brothers fried okra sucks. -- The deli section fried chicken f'n sucks cuz nobody buys f'n fried chicken here, so the chicken is usually several hours/days/weeks old (kind of like the cougars that shop here). Also one of the female employee's that I haven't seen lately basically flat out lied, when I asked when the batched was cooked. She told me "just a couple hours ago", and I said it looks several hours old, yet she insisted it was freshly cooked which was a huge f'n lie. You f'n lying troll. Instead, I suggest that you drive over to the KFC across the street as a very, very, last resort, but it's still better than here. -- "Mountain High" brand yogurt is primarily only in the 32oz container, and they only have vanilla and plain. No strawberry, and I suggest Albertsons as an ideal alternative. -- All the alcohol here has anti-theft devices attached to every bottle. Not much murder here, but alcohol theft is rampant on the hardened streets of Costa Mesa/Newport where you see people barely scraping by with their one to two year old Bentley's and Lambo's up in da hood twenty fo' seven, yo! -- Don't expect to find ham hocks here. Expect to find skinless chicken breasts instead. I think I went to Costa Mesa because Promelis didn't have it either. -- Don't expect to find collard greens, mustard greens, or kale here. Instead go to Whole Foods in Irvine or grocery stores further in Costa Mesa. -- They have Red Rooster, Franks Red Hot, Trappey's, Crystal Hot Sauce, Tapatio, Cholula, but no Louisiana Hot Sauce. I like #1 Louisiana, #2 Red Rooster, and #3 Franks (Buffalo wings). Another thing that sucks is that I have to go to Santa Ana for fried chicken/Popeye's chicken, and I'm not a big fan of KFC which is across the street. It just comes down to the fact that this neighborhood is going to make me work for my favorite foods..... so that's how they'll chase me out of here. read more

I have a gripe about people who bring their pets to the supermarket. The law states that animals are not permitted in stores where groceries are sold, except in the case of service animals. And then, they must be clearly marked as service animals. I have shopped at this Ralph's since moving to the area in 1999. Recently, there have been several instances where people bring their pets and place them in the shopping cart while they shop. This is absolutely disgusting. An animal has no business being in a supermarket, much less a shopping cart. I complained about one person this morning and she left. As I was leaving the store, another lady walking in with her dog in a basket. PEOPLE, ANIMALS DO NOT BELONG IN A SHOPPING CART IN A SUPERMARKET. Now, before you you tell me that your dog/cat/aardvark/chimpanzee is the cleanest/friendliest/calmest/will never bite you kind of animal there is, that is not the point. I'm sure your pet is the best in the world. The point is, ITS AN ANIMAL. IT HAS NO BUSINESS IN A SUPERMARKET OR A SHOPPING BASKET!!! Leave your animal at home when you shop. It won't miss you that long, and you won't miss it that long. And if it is a service animal, get the proper markings for the animal. And, if you put your animal in a basket, clean the basket with the sanitary wiped the stores provide. SHAME...SHAME;..SHAME ON THIS STORE AND THE DISTRICT MANAGER. I am a newly opened restaurant in Coste Mesa (Filomena's Italian Kitchen). We have adopted 10 local families this Thanksgiving that needed our help. 1 women with 4 children who just left and abusive relationship, 2 families trying to support their families while taking care of a child with Down's Syndrome. An elderly women who took in her 3 neighbor children when the mother went to prison, and many families with similar heartbreaking situations. I shop at this store almost daily picking up supplies and supporting my local grocery store. I spend thousands of dollars here every year. I simply asked Ralph's to help by selling me the 10 needed turkeys at the advertised price of $0.59 per pound. They turned my down saying it wasn't fair to their other customers. So I'm asking....Do any other Ralph's customers care if I feed 10 families who need our help and buy, not ask Ralph's to donate the turkey, at the advertised price of $0.59 pp instead of the full price of $1.89 pp? The advertisement states $0.59 pp with a $25.00 purchase. Don't you think the thousands of dollars I put into their pockets each year should count towards something? Don't you think Ralph's should be an active participant in their local community? I'm a new company, I want to help and it's the right thing to do. I'm just asking for the companies I support to support me back in such a great cause to extend a helping hand. read more

This store is the worst and I think they really need to hire better management. I say this only because every single time I go in there I find anywhere from a couple to a few items that are already expired and still on the shelf. Tonight it was the instant Idaho potatoes ( expires april 11, 2013), the chipotle mayo (expires April 04,2013) the bread I wanted actually was good until tomorrow so unless I wanted to eat the whole dang loaf it would be a huge waste of money. This is normal and like tonight I always bring it up and notify the cashier just to have them say, " really there shouldn't be anything expired because they are suppose to check everything each night" haha but out of the 10 times I have told them not one cashier bothered to call anyone to have them removed. It's crazy and a serious pain in butt. I have to examine every product and locate an expiration date just to make sure I don't purchase anything that's already expired. The cashiers are very nice every time I have been in there so they get props but the management needs to possibly supervise the production of the store a little better. I really wish Trader Joes or Sprouts carried more items then I would never use this store. read more

This review pertains to the deli. The sandwiches are tasty, but the service is bad. On my most recent visit, I ordered two sandwiches. The lady who served me had that thousand mile stare and worked at a glacial pace. They don't have all the meats and cheeses ready to go. So i had to wait for her to slice them and then re-wrap them in cellophane. It took 15 minutes to have two sandwiches made. Frustrating. Been there two times and I can't take it any more. read more

I was just here!! Everything was just so good. Man I didn't even know what to buy because all so good. Good f***ing fruit, good tampons for stopping the flow when you're on the go. Alcohol selection is good if you're into wine. Good Ralph coming in hot with large melon medley. Next time you go in be sure to grab one it's in the fruit aisle. Yeah yeah but if you want the fresher stuff go through the flappy door that says employees only you can get a five finger discount off everything in that section most days of the week. yeauuuuuh the olive bars great and they got tomahawk ribeye for sale. Couldn't find the booze I was looking so I went to sprouts instead down the street on Westminster & E-17th ST. Could find anything good at sprouts so I got some sake. This is the grocery that I go to each week. I DON"T love my grocery! I used to have markets in other cites that I have lived in that I loved. Why don't I love this one? Well, it lacks a little bit of something that I cannot pin point. Maybe it is the smelly fish area, maybe it is the lack of a good butcher, maybe it is a lack of good produce, maybe it is a lack of good cashiers. I go to the grocery store fairly regularly. All the employees are very nice. The deli makes and amazing sandwich. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is that the deli is hit or miss. sometimes when I ask for a custom sandwich they say they only have ready made sandwiches and to just pick out one of those. Sometimes I will get a girl there that is amazing, friendly and excited to help. I wish I could remember her name now. BTW: they also are the only grocery store I know of that has a sushi chef ready to make you a custom roll. read more

So I shop here weekly if not more. Everyone who works there has been out of their way nice, but today I got a checker that barely said hello to me. Not only was he not friendly but he was chomping on gum the entire time. Rosalind in the deli here is terrible! Whenever I come here I have the best service from a young man and her greeting to me was "yes" I replied "are you busy?" And her response was "nope I'm waiting for you to tell me what you want." I come here only for boars heAd because this is the only place that has it and she is just awful. read more

I want to start by saying that I'm not normally a vindictive person but in this case I'll make an exception. I used this location for groceries and medications. I'm in a wheelchair and have a service dog . He's 13 and I was informed this day he was having liver problems. His medicine was not agreeing with him but I didn't know that. I was rolling pretty fast trying to get in and out quickly. I didn't know he was laying a bowel movement behind me. If I had I would have quickly cleaned it up. As I was checking out the Co-Manager, Louie, came up behind me, startling me and my dog badly and loudly said my dog was not allowed back in the store in front of all the employees and customers. Louie said 20 customers complained. Why didn't anyone say anything to me? I was mortified and embarrassed and tried to apologize but he kept on going. When the lady brought the bag to throw it away Louie said to give it to me to take home. I know Finnegan did wrong and he is retiring next week. I have my next service dog training now but I will NEVER forget how this man treated us and how Corporate office is allowing it with no apology. I cried in the parking lot for 45 minutes. Lets talk about terrible horrible, customer service from Cashier to the manager ! 1st thing Cashier (Michael V on my recepit) and Bag boy are in a deep discussion about getting drunk with a football drinking game. (aren't supposed to shut up when they are ringing customers as to be polite and not make mistakes. Not to mention, what if I am offened by your dumb A drinking talk or have children with me ! Well they screwed up forgot to put my 2 Magazines in the cart with a basket full of groceries. I guess they should have been focusing on the job... but not ! So I called the store. Listened to a 2 minute message then pressed "0". Approximately 4 minutes and 50 rings later someone finally answers. They checked for the mags and said come get them, but I cant, I am far far away now leaving the area and not giving up my beach parking spot ! I asked to just credit my bankcard I paid it with. He said NO. I asked for a manager. Minutes later on hold I get a low level manager. I asked for a refund again, He said he could not do that. I said why. He did not know how??? Not sure what his deal was , but I know you can manually enter a card. Duh ! So he said I need to call back tomorrow. Did not take my info, left it all on me for there mistake ! totally rude staff!! Very good Ralph's location. Most of the employees and the managers are very friendly and helpful. This store is the perfect size to generally have everything you need, but not so huge you get lost in it or overwhelmed with too many options, like at the larger Ralph's on 17th St. The only things I buy elsewhere are specific high end deli meats and cheeses that aren't available here. Also, check the packaged fruits and veggies for mold before you buy (seems to be a problem at all Ralph's). Other than that it is very clean and well stocked. Open until midnight every day, but they start turning the lights off and covering refrigerated areas 20 minutes early, which is annoying. That's my only complaint. read more

I called and they gave me 3 different times to come in when someone was able to process my WU. When I went back in they said the system was down. This is an exceptional grocery store with good prices and incredible customer service. In particular, I would like to mention Susan, the store's receiver, who I met when looking for a very specific kind of fresh tortillas recently. Because they had not been delivered yet, she called the person who delivers them and asked him to bring them to the store for me. Since I could not wait, I said I would pick them up the next day. Susan called me to tell me when they arrived, and where in the store I could pick them up. When I arrived the next morning, they were waiting for me -- not the one package I had requested, but two, and at no charge. I assume they didn't charge me because I had to go out of my way, driving back to the store to pick them up, but I don't mind going out of my way to shop at a store that offers such thoughtful customer service. I highly recommend the Costa Mesa store. read more

I stopped in for a pre-cooked chicken. As I was waiting in the 15 item or less line behind someone with 50 items, I was startled by an employee shouting into a microphone in the next isle. He had it so close to his mouth all I could hear were garbled words. He was saying something about safety. As I waited I heard 2 more announcements over the speakers about something on sale and asking so-and-so to report to the office. The announcements were hard to understand and jarring to hear. I would boycott Ralph's and other retailers who are now going to charge you a dime for a bag to put the groceries you just paid extra to buy because they have the highest margins possible and still suck the money out of your wallet for low quality shopping experience... no body that works there ever has a smile on their face. I'm done after the manager ran after me , Yelling that I hadn't paid for a bag - and that I owed them a dime. yes a dime , 10 cents, 10 pennies... Then she couldn't figure out how to make me pay for it after the fact- then she said "she would let me get away with it this time...?!!" Wow - your so gracious... What a POS - chased me after a dime... I guess if you're buying starbucks and the rest of the shit they sale - you probably don't care... I don't either - it just goes to show how the END is Near.
