If ever there was a zombie apocalypse I would head to Ralph's. They have everything thing there and you could hold up there for years.

This low star rating review is all due to the unsatisfactory service we received from their bakery department. Long story short, they're incompetent and have no clue how to run their operation. My wife and I ordered specialized cupcakes and a small cake from the bakery. A day before we were supposed to pick up the order they called us. We confirmed pick up time and they affirmed us that they would have it ready. When we went to go pick up the order, nothing was ready! When I began to inform the staff that they had told us it would be ready, the same staff member who spoke with my wife the day before began pointing fingers at us saying we never told them when we would pick up the order. This was a complete and utter lie because I know my wife and I verified pick up time with them the day before over the phone. We were late for our intended start time for setting up for our one yr old little girl's bday party because of this and it added undue stress and setbacks. The only reason why this isn't a one star rating is because they offered to give the little smash cake to us for free. Stay away from ordering special orders from the bakery here! Do not have them pick fruits or vegetables for you if you are doing grocery pick up. The bananas were all black and the potatoes had to be from the bottom of the pile (old and Dried Out!). Otherwise I do shop here weekly and find 99% of the employees are really great. The shelves are as packed as they can be. And the place is clean. They just need to teach their 20 something's how to pick fruits and vegetables!! read more

I have shopped at this Ralph's for many years. I consider it my "local". However, I'm sad to say I'm done with the place. My last three visits to the store I have had rude encounters with the employees. I know these are trying times and I have tried to be understanding and give them a wider berth but in the end there is no excuse for treating your customers rudely. One time, a bagger mumbled a question through her mask. I thought she asked if I had my own bags. I answered "No, I don't." She then held up some broccoli which I had purchased and said "What do you want me to do with this then?" I was confused but asked "Put it in a bag?" She snapped back at me, "You said you didn't want bags when I asked." I replied, "I'm sorry (being a phrase they don't seem to ever use) I thought you asked if I had my own bags." She replied, "That's not what I asked you. I asked if you wanted bags and you said no." I looked at the checker for help and said "I would like my groceries bagged please" She literally said - you need to tell her that. No apologies from them just my $200+ charge. WTH? On another visit, I entered a check lane with its light on and the checker didn't even look up but said" I'm not open and I won't be for a while" Again, I'm with the "I'm sorry - my mistake. I thought you were open because the light is on. ( I really was thinking maybe she didn't realize the light was on) She didn't look up, didn't reply - NADA! I went to the self check out and this time I had my own bags. The system apparently doesn't like that because it kept locking up. The clerk there told me I was doing it wrong. So I asked her how to do it so it wouldn't freeze and she said, "I don't know anything about how these machines work" and walked away. The store has good product but man, I don't need to be treated like that when I'm handing over good money to them. I think they need a little employee curtesy training. read more

Please don't argue with a customer if she asks you to pack the bags "light", don't tell her that they already are "light". Please don't avoid eye contact and attempt to scurry away when a customer approaches you to ask you a question pertaining to where an item might be located. Please don't stand there chatting with another cashier blocking the conveyor belt when a customer is attempting to load her groceries for check out. Don't look at the customer like you are being bothered, sigh loudly, announce you are on a break and then tell the customer to move out of your way so you can pass. Let me just say that I have never Yelped before. I've been a server for 8 years and I hate how self important and inaccurate yelp reviews can be. That being said, I got treated horribly by multiple members of the staff at this location. I bought a bottle of Tomatin 12 year scotch on my way home from work along with my weekly groceries. The scotch was in the box and when I went through self checkout the attendant didn't de magnetize the black alarm cap. I realized this when I got home. I thought maybe the cap had been demagnetized at check out and tried to remove it with no luck. I called the store and told them that I couldn't find my receipt, which I couldn't. I ran multiple errands on my way home and couldn't find my receipt anywhere. I asked the male manager on the phone if there was anything they could do for me considering they were the ones who messed up. He was abrupt but he told me that if I came back in and the cashier who took my ID remembered me, then they could take it off. I drove all the way back and when I arrived back at Ralph's every single employee I encountered was beyond rude. And the manager that I needed to speak with left me at the front for 10 minutes, just standing there. When he finally came over he insisted that my cashier didn't remember me, it had only been two hours. I have bright red hair, tattoos, and she even verified my ID. And she said this without even looking at me. Then the manager told me that he couldn't get it off if he tried because I had already tried twisting the security cap off. I corrected him and pointed out that that was a blatant lie. I've worked in bars for years, I know that all you need is a magnet. After I told him that he sighed, rolled his eyes, and told me he would remove it just this once. My biggest problem was that there was no apology for their blatant mistake, only misplaced and unnecessary attitude. I'm nice to dumb people for a living. I know how to treat the people who pay me. This manager was a flat out asshole to me. I've never stolen anything in my life and he talked to me like I was stupid enough to shoplift and then come back to the store. He even went as far as to say that it was my fault for not checking that the cap never got removed? That would be like me telling one of my tables that it was their fault I forgot to ring in their food or drinks. I'm never shopping there again, and I'm deeply insulted by how I was treated and talked to here. I'm never shopping at any Ralph's location again and absolutely plan on calling their corporate office. read more

This is the worst customer service Ralph's. If you shop here when there is the management, you can see that they just like to laugh and fool around and won't work hard to help the customers. It gets pretty busy because the workers and managers slack off. They feel very entitled as they are in union and not afraid of providing bad service to customers. One time I had to bring the basket up on the checkout because the bottom section was filled. The clerk man abruptly snatched the basket as very irritated while I was moving stuff out of the basket to the checkout section. Then he put the basket up side down and spilled all the items into the checkout section. I was like, wah wah wah. Then he said "whatever, they can't fire me for this"...wow... Today the manager made me wait for 15 minutes and when he came to talk to me to help me on the card service, he cut me off while I'm answering his question on "what I need", and answer in very rude tone. And before I even said thank you in response, he just left me.... Worst service man. These guys just don't give a thing as they are in union. read more

This is our grocery store of choice (mixed in with TJs and Growers Direct of course). Ralph's has one of the better selections of beef among grocery stores although Albertson's large, we pack it for you dept. is pretty solid too. Not sure what to really review about a grocery store - I come each week with a list and typically I get everything I need. I guess that makes it good. The produce could be a little better some days but that goes for any supermarket. This one seems to have a decent selection of most things. Like I said, we usually mix in a trip to Trader Joe's down the street and GD as well to finish out our shopping. I used to be a "Vons" guy but the Vons on 17th is tiny and the one on Harbor sucks so Ralphs wins out. read more

This review is for the Sushi counter at this Ralph's location. OH MY GOD, I seriously cannot believe the delicious and fresh sushi I found at this Ralph's. I have been coming here for over a year and the quality has only gotten better. The onsite sushi chef will make anything you want or you can chose from the pre-made (but not old) shelf. My favorite roll is the Hawaiian roll. It usually sells out so I ask the chef to make it for me. It's a delicious spicy tuna roll with avocados and that yummy orange sauce on top. Try it....NOW! And hey...Ralph's manager...if you are reading this, give that sushi chef a raise IMMEDIATELY! I'm selfish and I want him to stay working there so I can enjoy his sushi for a good price. :) read more

I could not be more pleased in my shopping experience at the Ralphs on 17th Street in Costa Mesa. The store is well stocked and organized. It now provides considerable organic choices. However, even of more significance, may be the high caliber employees. Mike and Greg in the produce always treat me, and others, as if the customer is important. Paulina in the bakery shows much responsive care for customers. Checking out with Lee at the controls, make this task easy and fast due his unusual friendliness and efficiency. I grew up with my mother shopping at Ralphs, so maybe this is why I have an inexplicable predilection towards shopping here. Yes, their meat/seafood counter SUCKS, esp. compared to markets like Albertson's or Stater Bros, but otherwise, this place is perfect. But any time I walk into an Albertsons, I typically get so frustrated within five minutes that I just walk out the door. I don't know what it is, I can just find exactly what I need at Ralphs and I know just where it is and just what sort of things they typically put on sale and for how much. The Ralphs Club thing makes the food here a damn good deal most of the time. Sometimes they have these great deals by which you buy 10 certain things and they'll give you a $5 gift card or $5 off your order. These are the best kinds of deals. This location in particular I prefer to shop at after 10 pm. It tends to get pretty quiet which makes shopping easier, but the stockers start to come out and clog the aisles with things, which is sometimes obnoxious. I typically will only buy things here if they are on sale, and stick to basics like eggs, butter, milk, bread, pasta sauce. Otherwise, prices tend to get high. Novelty items are often on sale. Things like applesauce, yogurt, rice cakes-- Ralphs tends to make it cheap and easy to pack and exciting lunch for work. I don't know what it is that keeps me coming back here, but I"m one hell of a loyal customer. You'll never see me at Vons, and if I'm at Albertsons or Stater Bros I'm usually disappointed-- meet me at Ralphs. It seems overprices, but stick to sale items and you'll be set! read more

This review is for the sandwich making area and the (female) creepy employee sitting out front staring down all the customers ONLY. The store otherwise is clean and well stocked. They even had sales on most of what I purchased. Now, the sandwich making area...wow. Two employees chatted while they peeled veggies, another was making the display look nice - all while they completely ignored me standing there waiting to be helped. I was the only customer in their section and after 2-3 mins of ZERO acknowledgement I just walked away. I'd save $$ making my own sandwich anyway. Nice customer service! read more

This is my favorite neighborhood grocery store. I typically shop at "Growers Direct" on 17th & Newport for my produce then go to Ralph's for everything else. The store is clean and the staff is super friendly! Especially the employees who work in the meat department, they are always so helpful and nice. If you have a club card you get discounts on certain items, you can make an account online to load free coupons onto your card, and the best part is fuel points! You earn 1 point for every dollar spent. 100 points = .10 cents off/gallon 200 points = .20 cents off/gallon This is a monthly program and definitely helps with the insane gas prices nowadays. They just built a Starbucks inside this location as well so that will be a nice feature once it opens. There is also a pharmacy, deli & sushi station. Can't go wrong with Ralph's! read more

Very friendly workers, they usually have a good number of lanes open so I can get in and get out. I like their prices better then Vons or Albertsons, they can't beat Trader Joes though. :) I do hate the amount of people they let sell in front of their store. I hate to tell boy scouts and girl scouts no but when they're there everytime I go to Ralphs I can only buy so much popcorn and cookies! Wendy was kind and also went above and beyond by rubber banding our fruit containers & asking how our day was. She was patient with Tony needing to fix the coupon issue. Norma was very warm, helpful, smiling and efficient. The store is clean and beautifully stocked. We had many people ask us if we needed help with anything. Similar to other Ralphs. Compared to Albertsons, I really like the self-checkout. Whereas Albertsons only has three bagging stations (and the computer yells at you if you remove items from the bagging area, blah blah), Ralphs has a revolving bagging area that has a lot more space to bag groceries. I have been shopping at this Ralph's for several years. I am really impressed with the way they have kept up with consumer demands such as adding more organic and gluten-free items. They have a wonderful cheese section. The employees are very nice and helpful. And particular, I would like to give a shout out to their employee Gordon who is always extremely friendly and helpful. I enjoy seeing Gordon every time I shop at Ralph's. It's almost like a small neighborhood feel even though we live in a city. Compared to other grocery stores in the area, I noticed that Ralphs does an excellent job of hiring people with mental/physical challenges. I have seen baggers with down syndrome as an example. This is an excellent example of supporting your community to the fullest. I highly recommend this grocery store. It not only offers great food but also great customer service. read more

I love this Ralphs. It's always clean, generally well-stocked, and the employees are so friendly! My cashier today was Justin, and he's the coolest and most patient person. He took it all in stride as I haphazardly threw my groceries onto the conveyor belt and then handed him a hoard of coupons to scan. Ralphs made a good move when they promoted him from bagging! I hope they pay him well enough to stick around. I stopped going to all Ralphs stores for a while when they changed their rewards program. It's this location that won me over and brought be back. This place get 5 Stars for Mike Vackar "The Jesus of Check Out Lines." Come in the evenings for exception customer service and speediness. Beyond that, this is just your average, run of the mill grocery chain store. Stick to produce at Grower's Direct and your food needs to Trader Joe's or Sprouts. I only come here for items not carried at at the above or ones that I need after hours. The self-check out is nice if there isn't a line, otherwise I can't really think of anything else this place does that warrants a higher review. read more

This Ralph's is ok, but it's got a few major flaws. 1. They lack a lot of fresh produce that doesen't expire in a week from the day you bought it 2. The self check out machines are frustrating to use 3. The employees who bag are very kind, but they either put too much stuff in to the point that the bag breaks or they cram in so much stuff that some of your food items are crushed. It's not a bad Ralph's, it's just these flaws make me not want to shop here often. On the plus side, the deli is awesome, and an awesome vinyl record store is just down the street. read more

I prefer this location to the Ralph's Fresh Fare on Irvine Blvd as the selection is better. So this is my first time back here at this store in a few years. It's a good size, but prices are wrong and the employees have no desire to help you. I'm very budget oriented and going through the check out i was making sure my sale items were correct and all the lady would say was " you got a lot of savings" but that's not what I asked. I needed to make sure so I asked if she could print receipt for me to look at (no one was behind me) store mostly empty. She said no she couldn't, and every time I asked she said no. So needless to say, I paid, went to side and checked my receipt and just as I thought, it was wrong on a few items. Now I get to go to customer service and get my money back on my items, which I was trying to prevent in the first place. I will stick to my small Ralph's on Irvine Ave where they are nice, personable and have the item to assist you. Bummed that I got this service again here. read more

This Ralph's location only does self-check out starting at 11:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Since so many people have problems during self-check out the people aren't there to help you out since they are helping everyone out. This is a significant thing for someone who does grocery shopping between the hours of 10:00p.m. and midnight. Now I know why everyone i my church goes to Von's or Sprouts. They also don't have any off-brand breakfast cereals. Their meat and produce department is great though. read more

I have been shopping at this Ralph's location since it became a Ralph's & have never seen this location ran the way it is currently being ran. I couldn't help but notice several other reviews mentioning rude employees. I believe it starts at the top. I not to long ago heard a very loud individual berating an employee like a bully. When I attempted to ask another employee to address the individual, he informed me that the man was their manager & that his name was Louie. I could not believe that a manager would talk to an employee like that let alone on the floor in front of customers. There is absolutely no excuse for that mans behavior & I sincerely hope that employee informed upper management of the situation. After witnessing that embarrassing situation, the many sudden not for the better changes that have taken place made perfect sense. Due to the current management or lack there of our family no longer shops at this location & have informed others to do the same. read more

This rating is for the awesome ladies in the flower dept. I purchased flowers early this morning (Valentine's Day) and only realized that after I had them wrapped in butcher paper, I needed to come back and pick them up later on the way home. When I came back to the busy flower department at night, they couldn't find the roses I purchased, but offered me a huge bouquet as a consolation, which was 2x the cost of what I bought so that I didn't have to wait in the busy lines. The flowers there are always beautiful, stay beautiful for a long time, and the service is wonderful. I will forever buy flowers (and groceries) from this Ralphs. Thanks again! read more

This is the best major grocery store in the area. The staff is very helpful, they have a great selection of products, especially the butcher and produce sections. They have self check out but also always have a good number of lanes open and I seem to never wait long even when it's pretty crowded. The staff will go in the back and look for items if you ask and always have a great recommendations. If you live in the area this should be your go to major grocery store! read more
