We have been going here for many years and the have the best ramen in the area. We love this place and that's why we are giving a 5 star review. Unfortunately it's started going downhill. I always look at reviews when deciding where to eat, especially with Asian cuisine. Reading some of these reviews i was excited to try this place, and rightfully so. Went in on a Thursday around 5pm, my server was really sweet and helped answer my questions. She filled my water anytime it was near empty, was very attentive! I ordered tonkatsu ramen with chicken and did the combo with pan fried gyoza. The broth was amazing, toppings were perfect texture and flavor wise, and the gyoza were delicious! Five stars, baby, five stars! I would fly back to AZ to have this ramen. I'm typically a shoyu person, but I went with the tonkotsu ramen based on recommendations from Yelp; I was rewarded with a bowl of luxurious ramen that I could eat every day, multiple times a day, if I lived nearby. We arrived about 40 minutes prior to closing (party of 6) with hopes we could be seated. The host greeted us quickly and placed us on the list with a probable 20 minute wait -- I was happy they didn't turn us away. Our wait ended up only being about 15 minutes. As soon as we sat down, the smell of long-simmered soup and chashu wafted our way. The server came by promptly and took our order in a very straight-forward manner with a joke or two thrown in. Everyone at our table wholeheartedly enjoyed their bowls of ramen. The chashu was meaty and tender. The soy egg melted in the mouth. And most importantly the noodles had the perfect bite to them. I laughed when I saw that this place is directly across the street from Tampopo. I'm a fan of Tampopo's ramen so I figured I needed to try Dozo to compare the two. First off, Dozo has a lot more on their menu than just ramen including poke bowls and sushi among other dishes. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen with extra pork and the portions were huge. Noodles were yummy and I liked the broth. The pork was different than tampopo in that it was thicker and not as seared on the outside. It was tender and a solid serving size for the price. The wait staff was very attentive and one of the cooks stopped by our table to ask us if we liked everything. They have a small bar area and then regular dining tables so this place has a bit more elbow room than Tampopo. Both Dozo and Tampopo have things that make them stand out and you can't go wrong with either place. I'm sure I'll be coming back to Dozo for more ramen and to try the rest of their menu! read more

I enjoy a good bowl of soup no matter who makes it and I have a sentimental weakness for Japanese soups. Miso in particular and made all the better with Ramen. So I'm actually sitting here still waiting on some dishes. I'm only reviewing my experience as well as the salmon bento. The salmon bento was hilariously child sized. In ounces the salmon came in around three at best. The rice serving is about the size of a tennis ball. So I ended up finishing my food in five minutes or so. Given my dish took forty minutes to come out of the kitchen. The chef does have a skill I wouldn't expect my salmon beside it's amusing size was burnt, dry and flavorless. The side dish of a roll of sushi was also very very petit. Service was slow but not sure if it was due to poor communication from the server or the kitchen. Either was it shouldn't take an forty minutes for a main course and an additional twenty minutes for a side. So yeah it's not a pleasant wait. Keeping in mind I was the first one there and the third to get my food. The family next to me got there food, ate and left before I received anything. I'm going to chalk this up to poor management. A ramen loving friend and myself decided to try a new ramen shop one night. I tried the tonkatsu ramen and just wasn't impressed. I felt like the broth lacked flavor and the meat was a bit tough. They didn't have many options for flavors of ramen, which was also a negative. We tried a spicy tuna roll which was better than the ramen. We were on our way to Sprouts to pick up something healthy to make at home... saw this place on the opposite side of the street, it was like having an angel salad on one side and salty ramen devil on the other. So, of course we gave into temptation and overall, it was pretty worth it. It was worth the experience. We got the Gyoza to start with, steamed. It was a really nice flavor but the sauce that came with it had an odd taste. Like a salty but dull taste, hard to explain but once you started munching down, all the flavors started meshing together really well. Then for the main event, I got the Shoyu (soy sauce broth) with chicken. It was just as odd as the Gyoza sauce. Couldn't really taste it but you could feel the food in your mouth, phantom like (oooooh). I added some soy sauce and Chile oil to it to help, which brought out some flavor. The price isn't bad but keep in mind, you get 2 small slices of chicken and what seems like 5 bites of noodles before it's gone and are left with a couple liters of phantom broth. My husband got the Spicy miso soup with an extra egg which he was happy he did because it added flavor to the soup that was otherwise, alright tasting. He added quite a bit of sriracha and Chile oil to also help out. Overall experience was good. Service was great, she was nice and timely. The place isnt as crowded as some Ramen places. The noodles were al dente, "to the tooth," and amazingly, it finish cooking as I added the cilantro and a few drops of Chile oil. Again, it had half a boiled egg, a slice of sea weed, and some onions that appeared to be green onions, only different, lighter, more supple than green onions or chives. It was all perfect! Simple, FRESH, ingredients, and as a great Cajun cook says, "Don't mess it up!" I'm assuming he meant that sometimes people try to hard. The first true culinary gem I found in Phoenix after moving to the city. By far the best Ramen I've ever had, I have tried their spicy miso (not that spicy but very good), tonkotsu ramen, and some of their sushi. The Ramen is where it's at, the broth is rich and satisfying and I always have it served with bean noodles instead of the regular ramen noodles. Not gonna lie, we were originally going to Tampopo Ramen across the street. Thing is, we had a party of 20 since we all came from the Matsuri festival. But if you've been to Tampopo, you know that seating for 20 is impossible. So we called Ramen Dozo and asked if they could seat 20. They said yes, and the rest is history. We showed up and tables were pushed together for all 20 of us to be seated together. The food came out in a timely manner. I think I ordered a tofu appetizer and chicken katsu. Not sure. I remember that I enjoyed it, although perhaps slightly disappointed by the portion size of the tofu. Our group was loud and probably obnoxious. But we had a really great time, especially since we were seated by a TV playing American Ninja Warrior and we were cheering as if we were watching some sports event. Probably would have given a 4/5, but it's 5/5 since the service was excellent. Hats off to the staff for being patient and cool with our group. read more

Great ramen stop in Tempe. We stopped in on a Saturday night around 7pm and had no wait for two. We both ordered the spicy miso which comes with a choice of pork, chicken, shrimp, or tofu. . I opted for the pork. It also comes with bean sprouts, green onion, seaweed, and half a soft boiled egg. The ramen came within 10 minutes and did not disappoint. The broth is not too spicy but they have chili oil to add if you want to amp up the heat. Overall, the flavor was awesome. The egg was cooked perfectly and the meat was tender. I added corn to it. It was a good sized portion. I wish that they had more options for the additional toppings. The broth was good and so was the noodles. I always like my noodles to be a bit thicker when i have ramen. I think the price was also pretty standard for ramen. If I were to choose between them and Tampopo I'd say it's a tie. Customer service was also very good and we got seated right away. I would come back for more ramen. =) They also have happy hour I believe. Two complaints--it was a thick piece of salmon but it wasn't quite cooked through. I don't love mayo anything on my Japanese food and would have preferred any other dressing on my salad.
