I had just finished shopping at daiso down the plaza and saw this place and wanted to give this place a try. The place was nearly empty with only two tables preoccupied with guests. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and the waitress gave me a jug of ice water and a queue number to place on the table. When my ramen came, I took a quick picture and started to dig in. The noodles were a bit slimy and were still stuck together. I don't think the chief wiggled it out enough for it to be loose from the other noodles when he put it in the bowl. The chasu was full of flavor and i'm thinking they might have marinated it with soy sauce or something. It was good in the beginning but after the 3rd bite, it was over powering the dish. Same goes for the broth, pleasant in the beginning but definitely salty and over powering the dish too. Their ramen is probably ranking at the bottom of my list. I choose this location for a group event as I normally don't see any crazy long lines in front of the shop like other ramen shop do. I ordered the spicy miso soup. The essential taste of the Japanese food is "Unami" - pleasant savory taste, the magic that makes Ramen so addicting and you can't stop at just one sip, one bite. However, the only taste I get from my spicy miso soup was salty bitter. I'm not sure what went wrong with their broth - too much shoyo and miso? not enough seafood? The noodle itself was not bad - but it's hard to enjoy it without good soup. Also, the spicy miso wasn't really spicy at all. I had to add the bunch of chili powder to get a little bit kick. Was given some excuse as to why they don't and it was based on past experiences. I asked if I dined in would I be allowed to take home my leftovers and was told yes. Then she also responded, but you can't take a few bites and then ask for takeout. I didn't plan on doing so anyway because the noodles would've been soggy by the time I got home. This restaurant has no menus, so if you want to read the ingredients in every dish yourself, this is not going to happen. You can ask for the ingredients though, the young lady at the register has them all memorized. The menu is written out on the wall, but it only has the entree title listed. Visited on Friday when the weather was chilly; perfect day for ramen! Celebrated my friends birthday for lunch. My teenager and I had the Spicy Miso Ramen and we absolutely loved it! Serving sizes are large portions. My 18 month old baby had the chicken karagge (my spelling may be off) and few noodles from my bowl! There isn't table service so you order at the counter. I was disappointed that they didn't offer natural or organic like beverages; they offer canned drinks (sodas). They should bring in hot tea for patrons. Spicy miso: Mine did came out super hot. Broth is delicious! Corn,noodles, ground beef, green onion and broth all together was good. Bamboo shoot tasted weird. 4/5 Tonkontsu: decent broth with sesame oil aftertaste. Chasu is decent not great. It wasn't seasoned well. Egg is good but can be a little more running. 3/5 Takoyaki: piping hot, delicious but very cheap on octopus.. mostly filling and only 4? 4/5 Was a little weird. there was a guy bringing food to the table... he literally came right in front of us refilling the wooden chopsticks. It was just awkward how he was in front of us just stuffing the chopsticks in. Kind of weird having disposable wooden forks all out and open though. Not sure how they got there whether it's clean or dirty. But if you were to wipe that with water it would seep in the wood. That's nasty. You go to the front counter to order first, they will give you a number, and then you can take a seat anywhere. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen and loved it! I sipped 90% of the broth so that should tell you how amazing it was. (9/10) Spicy Miso - It didn't deliver a wow factor to me as the Tonkotsu ramen. The broth is soybean base. It comes with ground pork, bamboo shoots, corn, scallions, and a 5-minute egg. If you can't tolerant the heat, they can make it regular/non-spicy. (6/10) Spicy Edamame - I was disappointed with this appetizer. It was overly seasoned with Vietnamese chile salt (muoi ot). I had to use a napkin to wipe off the salt. Get it plain!!!! Chicken Karaage - Yummy!!! It was seasoned just right and the chicken was not dry. I eat it with some of the basil leaves on the plate and it hit the spot! Beef Gyu Don mini rice bowl - A small bowl of white rice topped with sauteed onions and beef. You don't get a lot of beef but I think it's enough to fill up ONE person's belly. We have tried other ramen places and wanted to be sure to support our neighborhood restaurants. The gyozas are tasty at a great price. We both had miso spicy soup. The broth is flavorful, but I agree with a couple of other reviewers that the ground pork is bland compared to the other really good ingredients. My husband added the pork belly which he said made it better. What we were really surprised about is that you can add any ingredients from the board or double them for no extra charge! We came during this freezing weekend to try and warm up, and (not) to my surprise it was packed! The restaurant itself was somewhat chilly inside, so I was really looking forward to a steaming hot bowl of ramen. I had the miso along with a side of fried fish and spring rolls. The wasabi that comes with the rolls cleared my sinuses since I accidentally dipped into too much sauce. The ramen is hot but not piping hot, I have a sensitive palette and was able to begin slurping and eating immediately. I came and got the "Tonkotsu" Ramen; Hakata style, grilled pork belly, wood ear, scallions, bamboo shoots, black garlic oil, and 5-minute egg. It was good, but eating the ramen didn't give me the wow this is amazing factor. I can tell you it doesn't taste bad. It just didn't hit my stomach in the right spot. We moved from Los Angeles almost 18 years ago and we miss the food terribly. One particular chain we miss is Yoshinoya. Their gyudon was comfort food and Ramen Jin was just what we needed to fill that void. Ramen Jin's gyudon is sweet and savory. Their rice soaks up the sauce perfectly. Intimate, casual restaurant with excellent food and very welcoming staff. We called to see if we could bring a party of 10 to celebrate my daughters birthday. They were very accommodating and provided great service to our party. We really enjoyed the tonkotsu ramen, the gyoza, and the chicken karaage (great spices!). Everything was great. My detailed review is missing from a year ago. How sad because I am a ramen connoisseur and perfectionist when it comes to ramen having made every ingredient at home several times from scratch and have been eating it about 14 years. I know flavors very well IMHO and even though my first experience was a train wreck I am very much interested in giving this place a second try since I've heard some positive/better reviews from my yelp friends. Anyway my first visit my bowl of tonkotsu was barely even half full and very oily. The eggs were not properly marinated and tasted boozy. The mirin was overpowering the marinade. Awesome tonkotsu ramen! It's order at the counter and it comes out quick and hot. Also loved the kimchi and pork belly bun. Would show pics, but we inhaled it all, so you will see empty dishes. Like a number of others, I was here on their soft opening night. Let me preface this by stating that I have never had "authentic" ramen, be that in Japan or NY or Cali or where ever. So, I can only say what tastes good to me! I made it into the line around 5:45 for their 6pm opening and ran into several friends (which was nice since I went by myself). Doors opened at 6 and the staff was very enthusiastic welcoming everyone. The line moved in and created the ordering line since it was counter service. I'm still not sure how I feel about this part. It seems like it can work, but not if people behind you start saving tables. The place isn't that large, so people who order first may not have anywhere to sit if that stuff keeps up. I didn't want to be "that person" so I stayed in line until too many people behind us started saving seats, so I finally caved as well. Boo. I like the minimalist interior with all the wood and Edison lightbulbs. We sat at the community table, which was like a giant lengthwise cross section of a tree. There were a number of soft drink options available, but we all opted for water, which was available in plenty of small pitchers being passed around the restaurant. I did have a hankering for a good Japanese beer though... not sure what their policy on that is. Will they be getting a liquor license? BYOB? We'll see. Orders are placed, and after a bit the food begins to arrive. The cold sesame noodles were very tasty, and very similar to a Taiwanese dish. The ramen was hot with enough pork richness for me, though possibly a bit underseasoned. I had wanted to try the shoyu ramen, but they only had the tonkotsu available for the openting. The noodles were al dente - a few might have been slightly under, but eventually evened out in the hot broth. The pork and accompaniments were good, but the EGG! I don't even much like eggs... but this is probably the most delicious marinated, soft boiled egg ever. Def getting an extra one next time. We had a slew of other small dishes to taste, the best of which was probably the tempura sweet potatoes. They were seasoned with a plum powder which had a subtle tartness in addition to a bit sweet and salty. Tempura fish cakes were also good, the karage was basically Taiwanese chicken nuggets. Overall I had a fun experience. Granted, I was there early, so I didn't face as many of the service issues that many people complained about. Towards the end of my visit, I did notice some confusion and backlog with people getting the wrong food, or things delivered sporatically for the same order, etc. Hopefully after this regrouping effort they can streamline their procedures and increase consistency. I'll probably give it another week for things to calm down after the reopening tonight before heading back, but planning another (and possibly regular) visit again soon. read more

Finally made the trek out here and was sadly disappointed, but at least there wasn't any need to wait in line! When you walk in, it is kind of confusing, but just go up to the cashier to place your order, grab a pitcher of water/cups and a wooden number block and take a seat wherever you want! The ambiance isn't bad with the repurposed wooden furniture and there seemed to be a lot of servers/runners. They had snacks, mini rice bowls, sweets, and the Tonkatsu, Miso, and Sesame Ramen available tonight. Chashu don: Out of everything we tried this had the most flavor. The rice was well cooked, and mixed well with the wet egg, 2 grilled slices of pork belly, sesame seeds, and green onions. My only complaint is that this dish left my lips feeling as I was wearing lip gloss...kinda greasy. Ramen: Overall, the broths for the ramen lacked a substantial amount of flavor but I must say you could tell they actually took time to cook down the bones/meat for the Tonkatsu, but that was the only flavor you tasted. The Miso flavor wasn't very strong either but tasted saltier than Tonkatsu, so I preferred this. The noodles were definitely Alkalined noodles, undercooked and probably not made in-house...get ready to chew! The slices of pork belly were quite fatty and cooked well. The egg was the best part, a bit cold but well seasoned with a hint of sweetness. Grill Mochi: This was an odd dessert, the mochi had an odd texture, and wasn't served hot, but I liked how their condensed milk wasn't overly sweet but not sure about the seaweed... Ramen Jin's business model is absolutely horrible. They are only open from 5pm - 10pm, Monday through Saturday. To survive, in any aspect of life, one needs to be cognisant of their environment. This is Westchase not CityCentre. There are hundreds of working professionals within a 1-mile radius of Ramen Jin and they don't capitalize on lunch crowds. To make matters worse, they don't post their hours on the door or window. It's not as if posting hours makes a restaurant less appealing or sexy, it's just informative. I've read some comments complimenting their decor. Seriously? The restaurant is approximately a 15' x 20' rectangle with a plain grey painted concrete floor. The ceiling is painted black. One wall is painted red and the other is covered with wood. All seating is simplistic wood. A seat at the table in the middle of the restaurant is just four wood squares nailed together to make a box. I understand that nature is beautiful but, c'mon, this is just wood. Strangely, accompanying the minimalist wooden decor is very loud house music. I didn't know if I was waiting in line to ingest noodles or MDMA. The staff isn't very friendly. They aren't mean or outwardly aggressive but they didn't welcome or greet guests arriving or waiting in line. The waiters seemed lost is the sauce. One was facing the kitchen, staring at a few order tickets, and two were just standing there, waiting for something to happen. When I looked at them to give a friendly nod/smile, they quickly looked away and avoided eye contact as if they were shy about something. It was a rather strange acknowledgement of my presence. I arrived shortly after 5pm and there were approximately 5 people ahead of me in line, nothing out of the ordinary, similar to a typical fast food line. What wasn't typical was that it took about 20 minutes to order. No big deal. They're new and not efficient yet, I presume. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and miso ramen. I'm not some ramen connoisseur who's eaten ramen on every Japanese island so I'm not going to criticize the broth or the al dente noodles. The pork was essentially 75% fat, though. The ramen wasn't horrid but it wasn't great. It was just mediocre. My primary complaint with the ramen is that the temperature of the broth was more lukewarm than it was hot. Thus, in my opinion, the food was nothing to write home about. In fact, I've eaten better ramen across the street at Koto. But, it's not as horrible as others have suggested. I understand that ramen is hard to make but if you're going to be a ramen house, it would behoove you to unass yourself and consistently make ramen that is unanimously considered to be "good." He said the soup was a bit bland, but he personally loves spicy soups, so that's an easy fix. My miso came out steaming hot, I actually had to let it sit for a bit before starting my meal. While eating I asked my boyfriend what he thought about the noodles, he said he liked Ramen Jin's noodles more than Tiger Den's. Odd, because I thought the opposite. Ramen Jin has come a long way since when it first opened with so much hype around it as the people of Houston wanted and needed a genuine ramen joint that simply serves good ramen. However, my opinion for this place is that it's good but it's not a very good ramen shop if you compared to ramen you could get in other cities. But it would be a good starting point for people who never had ramen that's not in the salty brick form or in a plastic cup back in the college days. This place is an order at the counter joint as you enter the restaurant, you could see the menu on the big board right next to the cash register or if you wish, you could get the menu and see what you want to order and then go order it. If you're not ordering any drinks, you could simply get a pitcher of ice water and cups that's also next to the cash register. They will give you a number and bring out the food when it's ready. The utensils (chopsticks and spoon) are already set at the dining tables. I haven't tried any of the rice bowl, desserts, or any appetizers but I have tried almost all of the ramen there. The tonkatsu is all right, the broth's flavor isn't that fantastic nor is the noodle. The curry ramen is decent as they use the typical Japanese style curry mixing with the curry paired vegetables, and the spicy miso, which is the best in my opinion but could be a hit or miss. For example, I had spicy miso on a dinner night and it tasted really flavorful. But I had it again during weekday lunch and it tasted a bit bland. Don't get me wrong, the food here is good but just not good enough when they hyped themselves. There's still a lack of consistency when people expect when they come back for more. But I can already tell they are still making stride on having the potential being a good ramen shop that will last a long time here in Houston. read more

I finally got a chance to check out Ramen Jin as it's located in my hood (Go Westchase!). Let's get straight to the food. *Warning - I'm not a ramen expect or claim to be one, all feeling expressed here are my opinions, if you don't like them deal with it! Ramen Tonkotsu - The broth seems to be salty and a bit oily, there was a pork favor but it was just salty. It's hard to explain. The noodles are done al dente which is different than other places. I didn't finish my noodles or the broth. The egg was cooked to perfection and tasted great too. Miso - this broth was better, it tasted like miso but the noodle (done al dente) just didn't go with the both. Snacks Chicken karaage - Who doesn't love fried chicken nuggets (done Japanese style). The pieces of chicken were still moist inside and crispy on the outside. Tempura fish cake - Enjoyed the tempura fish cake. It didn't taste fishy at all (but, I'm not opposed to that fishy flavor). The tempura was fried to perfection. Sweets Matcha waffle: This dessert was edible, the waffle tasted like it was just reheated after being frozen for a time. It wasn't fresh at all. The ice cream that came with it wasn't bad but didn't make up for the waffle. I did enjoy the décor of the restaurant. Great job on picking out the furniture and colors! Small quaint place, loved the Ramen! We also got the Tempura king mushrooms, a little on the salty side. The waitress was Awesome, however the cashier is poor enough to ensure I won't come back if he is working. We walked up asking questions as we had never been here before - he huffed and was annoyed by it. Ramen Tonkotsu come to me! I love this spot. Great tasting ramen and it is about $3 less than other joints. Broth is rich and the pork is juicy. Menu is pretty small but not a big deal to me since I come to this spot for one thing. Go try Ya bowl! read more

If you looking to come to a place with a laid back atmosphere, upbeat music played at nice level, great appetizers and on point ramen then you have arrived! First time ramen eaters and veterans will enjoy the miso or tonkotsu shoyu ramen most. You can't go wrong as they are solid, delicious choices. I am also happy to say i am in love with their creamy tasting tonkotsu ramen. The chef owner really has improved this dish and it taste great. So if you're like me and dream of tonkotsu, then you won't be disappointed. **Some plus points.... -The noodles here are NOT the super thin variety! I love that. -The soup is served hot. I love that too. - The shop is open lunch and dinner hours! Mon - Sat. -The portion size is great. You will not leave hungry. - if you have a issue, question, or idea to contribute...ask to speak with the owner.. he will listen and help you out. The service here is casual, not really stiff, so you can feel free to leave your seat and go to the counter to order additional items if you want more of something, the server on duty would be more than happy to help as well, but you're not relegated to waiting on him or her to come to your table.. ahh....freedom! I've heard mixed reviews about this place so decided to give it a try. From my experience, I actually really enjoyed it. After listening to a lot of people I think it's safe to say that you'll probably get a hit or miss at this place, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 stars. They are a mom and pop shop, so I can understand if you make the broth fresh everyday, you may get it a little different each time. It's hard to expect the same thing every single time you go. Food: I got the tonkatsu which is the basic, staple ramen and I really enjoyed it. It comes with maybe 4 slices of pork belly, half a soft boiled egg, but omg let me tell you, the egg makes it. I think that's kind of their signature thing and I would go back just for the egg. I know it's completely ridiculous to be raving about an egg, but, they don't just soft boil their eggs, they actually braise it with the meat I believe. It's seasoned and tasted like it was actually marinated. Portion: the portion sizes look like they would be big, but when I took mine Togo after I finished (which I didn't eat much more than a few bites because I ate right before), it all fit into a small soup container. That made me a little disappointed because the bowl just looked so big. Don't et me wrong, it's still a good sized portion and keep in mind, it's all carbs so it'll fill you up. Atmosphere: the place is really quaint. When you walk in, you order at the counter and then sit down and they bring it to you. I also like that they give you a carafe of water when you ask for water cups. The place is pretty small so I'm sure it can get pretty packed. I went for lunch so it wasn't too packed. So it's lunch time and everyone is headed out, I tag along and wonder if we are going to get more lemon chicken like last week. Nope, it's Raman day. We all pull into this shopping center and park in front of this shady little place. We walk in and I'm thinking that this has potential. We all walk up and order, I see some sort of Pork Belly role, of course I have to order 2 of those. I also order some bowel I can't pronounce but the register lady was super nice and got my gist. We all sit down and soon enough all the food starts showing up. I have to say it was pretty good. Those Pork Belly roles were fantastic. I mean I could have eaten 12 of those things. The bowel was good, the Chicken appetizer things were good as was the pot stickers. So yes all in all it was night and day difference from my last ramen experience here in Houston.
