Worst Mexican restaurant in San Diego! I went there today for lunch and only 1 person was there. I ordered a fish taco and I waited 10 minutes. No big deal and I was looking forward to it but when it came out I was so disappointed. Fired little pieces of fish. Tasted like old freezer burnt fish! I'm not sure if anything else is good from this place but I highly doubt it! Save your money and pick another place. You will thank me later. I give it 1/4 star! They Definitely need to rethink their strategy to serve people! I don't like to give bad reviews but hopefully they will take pride in serving customers in the future. Ramon's taco shop is only a block from my house and it never disappoints. We often come here when needing a quick and affordable meal. The staff is always friendly and helpful which I truly appreciate. we do sometimes dine in but since we live so close, we normally get takeout. They have specials throughout the week and a self-serve salsa bar. The location is in a little strip mall and there are a few seats and tables inside if you want to dine in. There is no table service, you order from the counter and sit down where you'd like. read more

I was in the area and decided to have breakfast, so I ordered the bacon and eggs breakfast burrito during their $2 off happy hour from 8 am to 10 am. The burrito normally coast $13 but I was able to get it for $10 and some change. It's a great deal and they do not hold back on the ingredients neither. The burrito came thoroughly filled with scrambled eggs and a very good amount of bacon. I like that the bacon pieces were large. The eggs however, could of used some seasoning. It was a good medium size burrito. I had it with two of the red hot sauces from the salsa bar. The bright red one was fire and very tasty. Actually, both were very tasty. The service was friendly and welcoming. The young lady at the counter was very nice and helpful. read more

Ramon's Taco Shop is a local joint located in the University Square of University City. Because this plaza was anchored by a VONS grocery store, the amount of spaces in the common parking lot was sufficient for all of the businesses. I used to visit this shop more frequently before the pandemic when the cost for their street tacos were as low as $1.50 each, $3.99 for three, or $5.99 for five. Only across the border in Tijuana had I seen tacos sold at such low prices. Fast forward to my most recent visit, and there was only one party seated in the dining area which had a capacity for about three dozen customers. A self service salsa bar was stationed to the left of the service counter. Street tacos were now $3.50 each or $9 for three. The same six proteins were available as the filling. I decided to go heftier and selected one of the ten burrito varieties in the Surf 'N Turf. Grilled shrimp, carne asada, cheese, guacamole, and pico de gallo were the ingredients wrapped inside the flour tortilla. After I arrived home and opened the burrito for consumption, the product was typical in size and flavor. The price was $15 which seemed to be a few dollars more than some of the places that sell this item. If you come between 8 and 10 am, there was a two dollar discount offered for their breakfast burritos. I gave my latest experience at Ramon's Taco Shop a rating between three and four stars. read more

The chicken chimichanga was good and well seasoned, but the carne asada in the torta was a too salty for my taste. Great parking and fast service, but the saltiness really threw the meal off. I know the could also be a one off so willing to give it another try as it is close to home. Slightly more pricy than other local spots. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the customer service here as a native San Diego who has been to a million taco shops. Yari was very nice, as she chatted with all of the customers and had a smile on her face. She even welcomed me and pointed out the House Sauce in the salsa bar. A few words about the House Sauce... This is a genius move by the restaurant, because it's like an avocado cilantro dressing on fire! It is very spicy, so I would recommend mixing it with plain Greek yogurt when you get home before putting it on your tacos. The other salsas were also excellent. I ordered the Carne Asada Fries, which were absolutely amazing! The french fries were premium fries to begin with, so the base was solid. Then, it was layered with cheese, carne asada, and a crema that was terrific. The fresh pico de gallo in one corner and the homemade guacamole in the other corner made the dish. Everything here is homemade, so if you're not looking for processed foods nor foods that come out of a can, then this is your place. This is legit home cooking without all of the extra salt, chemicals, and preservatives. The refried beans were homemade, the Chili Relleno was homemade, and the rice was homemade. Good job, Ramon's! Man this place has it all ! I started things out with sharing a hot Cheeto burrito with my buddy and it was fire ! My friend got the spicy shrimp plate and loved it ! I tried one of the shrimp and it was good. Me and my buddy also shared the surf and turf fries and the carne asada was so flavorful. We all shared the pollo asado nachos and chicken was so flavorful. Complete and total overpriced ripoff. Avoid this place it's not worth it. I have had pricey stuff that's gourmet and that I can be talked into enjoying but the tab of almost $20 a pop on burritos is just a complete farce. Starting with the good. The tortilla was toasted enough. Not enough shops do this. The bad Tiny portions and more expensive than most shops. Fries here are all half order containers and burritos are tiny. California burrito was mostly fries, and didn't have sour cream and was incredibly dry. The fries also do not come with sour cream. Sour cream is an extra 2.50 on a burrito that's already 16. This is nuts. And not only that, but two of the three salsas tasted odd, like fermented, but not on purpose. We just moved to the area and were told about Ramon's. We ordered four meals including two burritos, a cheese quesadilla, and we thought we'd try something new: mulitas. We ordered and picked up, place was nice and clean, and overall, well maintained. Sadly, the food was underwhelming. We thought it might have been that we didn't give a 20% tip when we ordered online for pickup (we gave 15%)? Hard to say, but overall, not recommended. They said the quesadilla came with guacamole but when we got it home, we'd received sour cream instead. And the mulitas looked appetizing but definitely not what was advertised online! It was very dry, the meat was burned (half of it was inedible), and definitely not enough cheese. I LOVE supporting small businesses and rarely give a negative review (as you can tell in my profile) but this place was definitely not up to par. read more

Meets expections is such an underrated measurement metric. Nowadays there are so many hipster taco places around that half the time I order something it definitely does not turn out how i expected. Slathered in Chipotle mayo, garlic aioli, and other non traditional style ingredients. When I order a breakfast burrito or carne asada fries i have a very clear picture of how it should be in my head. When the food shows up and it's not what i expected i'm generally disappointed (even if the food itself might be good). Having said all that, Ramon's is your traditional style mexican joint. I only come here cause it's close to my house. After coming here throughout Covid, the best and most consistently good items are the carne asada fries and the taquitos. I came here so often during the pandemic, I knew who the good cook was, Saleem. He left a while ago tho. Now the burritos are meh - sometimes the cheese isn't melted all the way, which to me is a horrible taste and texture. The hot red salsa and the house salsa help.
