I've been coming to this practice for about 25-30 years. I absolutely Love the care & treatment I've received there over the years, plus all the staff were really really great. Sadly with the passing of Dr. Kanemaki (Lord rest his soul) and the selling of part of his practice, practically everyone there now is new. My 1st visit there last year was because my tooth had cracked and I needed a crown. Thankfully I got 1 out of the 2 original doctors left there treated me, but all the assistance were new. When I went back for the actual crown to be put in the assistant had a hard time getting it to fit right, it took quite a while and quite a few times for her to get it in. After that visit I felt as if my crown didn't feel right but I thought it maybe because I was feeling a little soreness from the amount of tries when putting it in and it being new. Unfortunately my crown continued to not feel right and then a little aching started, and unpleasant pain when chewing. I know I needed to go get it checked out but life got busy and I just delt with it until I couldn't take it anymore. Which brings me to present day, just about 1year after the original placing of my crown. I called and they were able to see me in 2 days. When I got there, once again everyone was new to me, and upon checking in the receptionist said she didn't see that I had an appointment. I explained to her that I had called 2 days ago and was told I could be seen on this day. She proceeded to tell me that she didn't see anything down for me and that maybe I called their other office. I said no, I called the office I'm in right now. Before she could say anything another gal there in the front office (who was on a call but I'm sure she heard everything) she jumped in and said to me "It's okay Ma'am have a seat, we will see you shortly." As I was waiting I was able to observe a few of the office staff and dental assistants doing their jobs, but not one of them looked familiar. When I got called back, there were 2 assistants clearly going back and forth as to who was going to take me (pretty awkward). But thankfully the assistant Floř that I ended up with was very very nice and friendly. I had asked her which doctor I was going to be seen by and she told me Dr. Robin. I asked if the original doctor I had seen last year was available. She said no, he was no longer there that he retired. I was a little sad to hear this news. I asked for the only 1 original doctor left which is Dr. Trent Kanemaki but he wasn't working in that office that day. Unfortunately he only works in the Buena Park office 2 days a week. So I was seen by Dr.Robin, she was very nice and thoroughly explained everything that may have been going on with my crown and what needs to be done to fix the problem. I now need a root canal, she referred me to see a specialist for evaluation & CT scan before proceeding with the root canal which is normally procedure. All in all despite the fact that I need a root canal, I feel good and am satisfied with the service & experience I received from Dr.Robin and dental assistant Floř. I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the situation upon checking in. Hopefully everything works out great for my future appointments with ALL the staff there in the Buena Park office. read more

I have been a patient at this practice for 25 years. After reading other reviews, I realize I am not alone in considering finding a new dentist. Since Dr. Kanemaki passed away, I have tried to be understanding of the changes, especially as long as Dr. Shimizu and Dr. Trent Kanemaki remained. However, my experience left me feeling undervalued as a long-time patient. I hope the office will reflect on how these situations impact patient trust and continuity of care. read more

Updated review: My hygienist was fantastic. I believe her name was Nikki. I don't think she works there full time which is a shame because she's fantastic. As for the doctor... much left to be desired. I believe her name was Dr. Alexis or Alexa. Not sure since she rushed through her introduction. I've always seen one of the Kanemaki's or Dr. Shimizu. Last time I came, I was given a different doctor without letting me know. This time, the same thing happened even though Dr. Kanemaki was there. Dr. Alexis briefly examined my teeth. She did not look under my tongue, as EVERY dentist does to check for cancer. She did not check my jaw for clicking, as it always does. What she DID do was jab the explorer under a brand new crown ( not done there) and pull extremely hard to try and dislodge it. Being in the dental field, working in general dentistry before, I know that if you dig deep enough you can make it seem there is an open margin and elude to the crown needing to be replaced. An xray was not taken, therefore, an open margin can not be proven. When I challenged the finding, she changed her diagnosis from a new crown to an observe. My hygienist also pointed out a fractured cusp on a molar to the doctor. I chose to observe that as well because I have retainers, and changing the anatomy of my tooth would cause my retainers to not fit. During check out, they attempted to collect $65 for my visit. The office is in network, and when I go to an in network dentist, my cleanings and exams are covered at 100%. I did not pay. Instead she offered to bill my insurance first. To be clear for anyone who is also in the dental field, I had a regular prophy, not a perio maintenance, and a periodic exam. That's it. No x-rays. If I'm not mistaking, that comes out to $111 for an in network dentist. They attempted to collect more than 50% of my visit. Here is why I gave 3 stars. No more, no less. My hygienist was fantastic. The Saturday hours are convenient. Wonderful greeting when I came in. Why not more stars? Poor communication on switching my doctor. Doctor rushed through my exam, and I did not feel like it was thorough, especially when it was the first time seeing me. No clear explanation on why I was being charged at the end of my visit. The dental chair had several tears in it, and was taped up with clear masking tape. Total bacteria trap. Also, the website needs to be updated. It's been over a year since the transition and I feel that it is misleading to continue to use Dr. Randall Kanemaki's name and brand that he made so wonderful. I will continue to go to this office because as I checked out, I made the request to only see Dr.s Kanemaki or Shimizu, even though I didn't see Dr. Shimizu's name on the door anymore. The Saturday hours and being in network with my insurance is what is keeping me here for now. read more

Even when I moved to Lake Elsinore and then Palm Springs in 2008, I STILL come back to Buena Park because they are THE BEST dentists, but more important the dentists and the entire staff are very friendly, kind and gentle. What a great experience on a day that could have been bad if I hadn't been able to get my chipped front veneer fixed. I called Dr. Kanemaki's office Saturday morning, and they were able to get me in quickly. I had to wait a little while at the office, but it was remarkably short considering I arrived at the last minute and they were busy. Doc Trent was able to quickly repair a pretty gnarly front tooth that had split on an old veneer broke off. He was quick, efficient, friendly, and above all professional. The front office was also great. I've had nothing but positive interactions! This may be my new dental home. read more

Care and quality continue as the legacy of doc RK's patience are in good hands with Doc Yoshi, he's a good guy. A bit different in style but at the core similar values of high quality work, not excessive work for billing sales, transparent, and willing to answer questions. I walk away knowing their work is quality and the stand behind what they do since it's not a sham. You have to be careful when seeking care to be within your insurance as well as someone not needing you to pay payroll by giving more work than needed. This is a place I can trust! I've been here so many years. Only wish is we get more like girly pop things, make the space warmer up front. I hate the dentist but I keep my appointments with Dental Assistant Ms.Taz all the time! Shady billing and zero flexibility for working professionals. I really wanted to like this place since the dentists, hygienists, and front-desk staff are all genuinely nice and professional, but their billing practices are incredibly predatory. I only go in for standard preventive care, which are the two cleanings per year that are 100% covered by my insurance. Somehow, they still managed to stick me with a bill. The "Surprise" Charges: They charged me out-of-pocket for X-rays because they assumed my insurance would cover a specific type/frequency and didn't bother to verify first. When the claim was denied, they passed their mistake onto me. If your office doesn't do the due diligence to check coverage before performing a procedure, that's on you--not the patient. Impossible Cancellation Policy: Beyond the billing issues, their cancellation policy is a total joke. They charge a $75 fee for any changes made within 72 hours of the appointment. * The Window: Three full days is an absurdly long lead time. * The Price: $75 is a massive penalty just for having a life or a job. If you are a working professional whose schedule can change, stay away. This office is clearly more interested in squeezing every cent out of their patients than providing actual care. Since Dr. Kanemaki passed away, his son Trent Kanemaki has been our dentist. He is wonderful and kind. The hard thing is that this practice was sold to another dentist in the 32 years that I have gone. I've never had to deal with financial issues. This time I had to go in to get a crown replaced And I was told that I couldn't get it done. Unless I paid for half of the procedure. I was not going to get it because I felt like I was just another number like I was not a human like I was just a dollar bill, but I did, and I'm glad I did because Dr. Trent was amazing as always. Unfortunately, because of the billing issues. My family and I chose to go to another dentist. I hope that whoever goes knows that Dr. Trent is amazing. And Dr. Shimizu is amazing as well, but they have to be careful with the front office and all of the financial billing and anything to do with the insurance. read more

The practice isn't the same after Dr Kanemaki's passing. Everything from the front of the house to hygienists to the dentists themselves has gone downhill since the practice was bought. The last time I came in for my regular cleaning my hygienist was the same lovely woman, but she took on new additional responsibilities like checking gum depth which used to be something the dentist did. When the dentist arrived, I mentioned that my night guard didn't fit very well and the first thing she did was throw the previous dentist under the bus saying it was horribly done. Not an ounce of professionalism. The tech that adjusted my mouth guard was cold and honestly just plain rude. From my perspective the new ownership is most interested in improving their margins, increasing efficiency, and upselling at the cost of honest dentistry and care for the patient. If you're looking for a new dentists look elsewhere. If you're an existing patient you've probably also come to the same conclusion yourself. read more

I had to reschedule my appointment and they accommodated for me quite easily. My actual visit was great. New faces at the front, and they were nice and friendly. My dental hygienist was Kristin if I recall correctly, might be wrong though. She's cleaned me before, very friendly, professional and made the whole experience comfortable. Was seen also by a Dr. Robin who was also wonderful. Great bedside manner, listened and asked great probing questions to further investigate my issues. I used to live 5 minutes away, but have since moved 30 min away. Ill still keep coming here for now, but am a little apprehensive about what recent reviewers are mentioning. However I do have Delta PPO which probably helps. The music choices were great! 5 stars! read more

Feedback for Dr Kanemaki and Dr Yoshikane. I had my first visit with Dr Robin. During our discussion about a treatment plan, she stops looks at my face and says I should see a dermatologist. What?!? She then proceeds to ask me if I had a primary doctor! If Dr Robin is a clinical dermatologist in addition to being a dentist then here-here. If not, she should stay in her lane! I have nothing but respect for the old Kanemaki practice but the culture and harmony is gone. read more

I had to change dentists when I moved to the OC area. I chose Dr. Trent for my dentist. He is nice, friendly and educational. I like how he agrees with the watch and see method when things are not bothersome. I grew up with a dentist that like to drill and fill everything. I am glad he is not. If the affected area has more change, then he will recommend an action plan. I have gone through a few hygienists (some may have been dental assistants) before I got Jorja. She has been wonderful in all aspects of care. She is friendly, professional and knowledge. I look forward to our every 6 months visits. read more

Too bad I cannot get in without a 3 month or more wait. Don't even think about trying to reschedule if something comes up unless you're willing to wait another 3 months. My family and I have been coming here for nearly a decade now, so it pains me to leave this review. The dentists are wonderful - Dr. Kanemaki, Dr Trent and Dr Shimizu are excellent at what they do and the staff are all helpful and kind. I've never had to wait for my appt time. I've recommended many family and friends. Over the last year, after Dr K passed and the business was sold, front office staff also changed, and there has been a noticeable decline in front office practices, service, and billing issues. I had an appt for a dental cleaning. Without notice, they made my appt 30 minutes earlier bc they decided to open the office earlier. I specifically made this appt months in advance because that was the time that worked for me. I only learned of the change when they called me to confirm the appt. Not thrilled, but sure I would try to make it work. I get there the following week at the updated time and they couldn't find me on the schedule, turns out my appointment was accidentally cancelled. Now I need to wait another 3-4 months for your error, no real effort to make it right. Next, their billing practices are poor. I keep receiving paper and email notices of "balance due". When I call to ask for details, either receive no response or when I finally reach someone, they say "don't worry about it, it's just an auto notification while your insurance is being billed". I've received over 5 letters of "balance due". I'm not blaming the front office staff, but whoever is managing this process needs to clean it up. It just feels different. The front office staff used to be reliable, respond confidently and have everything in order. And unfortunately, while I want to support the practice, we'll be looking for a new dentist. read more

My family just learned today about Dr. Kanemaki's passing. He was a great dentist and friend of the family. My grandparents had Dr. Kanemaki, as well as, my mom and sisters. He was the dentist to my uncles and cousins too. Dr. Kanemaki even came to my grandparents funerals. We are all saddened by his passing. He was a very kind person and has excellent office staff. I was a patient of Dr Randall Kanemaki for more than 50 years. Sadly he passed away. I went for my routine cleaning today and learned that the practice was sold. The new office manager tried to strong arm me into $400 xrays which I was not prepared to pay since I pay cash. Rather than try to work with me, they refused to clean my teeth. I am a medical professional and would never treat a patient so poorly. Shame on them. read more

This office has a serious lack of attention to billing my insurance and being upfront with cost of services. I wasn't told how much it would cost for installing a dental implant upon first appt. On second appt, I was told service estimate and asked to pay 100%. I asked how much my insurance would pay and was told their office would file a claim. Well, 3 weeks later, they didn't file a claim! I had to call insurance and Dr Kanemaki's office several times to follow up. A month later I get notice from insurer that they adjusted bill for partial coverage. I expected a refund from Dr Kanemaki office to arrive. A month later- nothing. Called dentist and they asked me to email billing. Seems like they need a new Billing department or person! BTW, dental care is good. This rating is a 0 star for service and 4 star for dental. read more

Very pleased and happy with my cavity getting filled. Dr. Robin is very courteous, pleasant and professional. I feel really safe in her hands. This office is over overall top notch. The dental hygienists are also very friendly, personable and professional. I've been going to this office for only a few years. I'm very happy I made the change. I am a fairly new patient (2 years) and came to this dentist based off of reviews on Yelp. At first the practice was In-Network for me, then all of a sudden at my scheduled appointment I was told to sign to acknowledge that the practice is Out-Of-Network. When asked when this happened because I was never notified and I chose this dentist because they were In-Network based off of my insurance. They just replied, "it's been awhile". Before the scheduled cleaning appointment I was not disclosed any out-of-pocket costs until I received a bill a month later! When I contacted my insurance they confirmed the dentists are In-Network (and he still remains in the insurance website as an In-Network provider). The insurance had been going back and forth to determine whether the dentists are in fact "in-network". Now I have cancelled all my future appointment with them, paid off my bill with them (to avoiding going to collections) and changed to another In Network dental provider that has been upfront with treatments and costs. ***Before selecting this practice be sure to check with the dental office if they are in or out of network for your insurance, or you'll be surprised by a bill for "Out of Network" costs*** read more

I would recommend this dentist office to anyone who needs dental work, routine or otherwise! They take great care. From the time you check in the office to your treatment and leaving, everyone is so friendly. And- they have the latest of everything. My daughter received this new foam fluoride treatment that was SO much better than the gummy or brushed on ones! We also have sensitive teeth and the hygienists always make sure we get a good cleaning with a gentle touch! Unfortunately I have needed fillings and get so anxious when I get the shots, but they make it so you almost feel nothing! A+++ for Dr Kanemaki's office! read more

My regular hygienist was out and they brought in a sub. She was terrible. She didn't even finish cleaning my teeth. Dr Yoshikane came in to do his exam and after that the gal didn't even finish cleaning my teeth. She didn't clean my top teeth nor did she polish my teeth. Horrible hygienist. Why is it everytime I go in the front office people are different. We have been going to Dr Kanamaki for years. Since he passed and the practice has been sold to a corporation the care has gone down.
