We decided to have breakfast here at the recommendation of a family member. The place was very busy with almost no open tables so we had high hopes. The coffee was good and my wife and I ordered two types of omelette's with potatoes & toast. The potatoes were undercooked, and our omelette's were both overdone (brown vs. light yellow). Toast was perfect. If I were to grade the food using a school grading system - our food would be a D+ to a C-. Not the worst food, but TC has much better breakfast places. read more

Good service, and the food came out fairly quickly. My husbands burger and fries were great, but the cole slaw was not fresh made and very disappointing. My cheese omelet was not good, I needed a knife to cut it, but the hash browns were very good. It's bigger than it looks from the outside, but the tables are just a bit crowded. Also, they need to adjust their fryer fan so it works, and just doesn't blow the grease into the restaurant. I seriously hate leaving a restaurant smelling like my dinner. Like a beacon of hope, Randy's diner saved our group once again. Cherry fest weekend guarantees 1-2 Hour waits for breakfast no matter where you go in town. Randy and his incredible staff bent over backwards to seat our large group of 17 together within minutes and they did it with genuine smiles on their faces. They were able to do so despite being incredibly busy. Randy himself told me it was a record setting Saturday for the restaurant. Rightfully so, you will not find nicer servers in traverse city, and I may argue, the world. I accidentally elbowed Randy's daughter (yes family owned and run) while she was pouring coffee. I apologized and she replied with, "it's ok, as long as you're happy!" The food is terrific too! This is not your average "diner food" although all of the classics are on the menu, the food they're putting out can rival any establishment in traverse city. Let me tell you, I'm a big fan of diners. I don't know what it is, but there's something homey about being in a family owned restaurant that only has a few servers running around. This is one of those joints. But the amazing thing is they have things like gyros and Greek salads, as well as a multitude of other great menu choices. Right down to the freshly baked pies. I believe they have changed ownership over the last 3 years. I was very impressed with the quality and service. The first time I ordered an omlette ham and cheeze- it was excellent. That was during lunch-they let U order braeakfast anytime-which is cool! Came with toast and h-browns. I asked to substitute bacon for the browns and my wish was granted- great service. We had breakfast here a couple of days ago and this place was nothing special, at least for breakfast. I ordered a three egg omelet with American fries and sausage, and my wife had eggs over medium with American fries and toast. The place was not to busy, however the waitress were zooming around but not getting much done. The couple behind us at the next table never had their coffee refilled while others had multiple refills. We waited for what seemed like a very long time to receive our orders, however this doesn't bother us much if the food is good. but when the food is so so then its troublesome. The toast was very dry as I expect it was warmed up and the eggs were stone cold on my wife's plate. She sent it back and to the credit of the waitress she brought out a new order that was fresh and hot within a couple of minutes. All in all we wouldn't go back as there has to be better mom and pop restaurants in Traverse City. read more

Got a carryout lunch order on a Saturday. Chili, BLT, fried walleye basket. I had the chili and BLT, my coworker the walleye. The chili was very mild, but meaty and hearty. The BLT was fun, about as much bacon as you could fit between two slices of white bread toast. Huge. Nothing gourmet, but you're not going to be hungry! The walleye was the star of the meal and I was definitely "out ordered" 1/2 walleye filet battered and fried. Excellent. Randy's hit the spot for 5 girls, who waited too long for each other to wake up, shower, get ready, and then decide where to go! Every place else had at least an hour wait. We were MAD-Hangry!! We got Randy's on the phone, they didn't currently have a wait, so we told the nice gal, we were on our way in, and she said she's save us a table! Finally...some luck to these girls! We waited only about 5 minutes...and were sat...this place was packed wall to wall with people....we were surprised no wait, but we quickly noticed it was only due to timing, because shortly after we arrived, another slew of people showed up and they were pouring out the doors waiting. Food was good, your standard breakfast grub...we chowed, drank up a bunch of coffee and then left for a nap...haha.. Service was on par for how busy they were...no one circulated with coffee, but if you asked, you got more, things were forgotten, but understandably these ladies were running their asses off! Hidden treasure in Traverse City! We were looking for a place that served good food and was kid friendly and Randy's fit the bill. It's a mom and pop kind of diner, with a pretty expansive menu, and a kids menu that was good and cheap. My 3 year old inhaled his grilled hotdog. Fish sandwich and sweet potatoes fries were excellent and the prices were really reasonable staff was very friendly. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Back in March I decided to take my mother to Randy's. She had been craving a burger from there and had not gone out to dinner since last spring. we sat down as a table of 4. It was super busy but they had the 25% capacity that was allowed. Our waitress came over and said to take our masks off. i Told her we were fine with our masks and would remove them once we were alone and eating our food. She said that she can't communicate if she doesn't read our lips. I found this interesting because she had helped me a month prior and said masks aren't needed here and I disregarded her. I said "No we will keep our masks on." She threw the menus at us and screamed to another staff member that she will not be helping us and the other member better. I was beyond upset by the interaction. Had this not been my second run in with this woman I wouldn't still be thinking about it. Our new waitress was amazing and took charge. I recently ordered to go from there and the same horrible woman took my order. The food is amazing at Randy's but this woman needs to no be working there. read more

Overall great experience with a few caveats. I am a personal chef who also drives a taxicab at night in Traverse City and have discovered that I like to have breakfast before turning in after my shift. This I plan for this to be the first of several entries in my quest for the best places for breakfast in Traverse City. It had been a while since I had been to Randy's - at least ten years - so I decided to grab some breakfast after work. It's easy to see why they're still around: the servers are friendly and the critical element, the food, passes diner muster. The Restaurant: Randy's seems to keep their dining room clean, although I think other diners in the area do a better job of capturing the fifties feel the storefront implies. I found the decor a bit lacking to complete the old fashioned feel I was expecting. Absent were the chrome, neon and checked tile that would be more in line with this type of place. That aside, I was largely impressed with my breakfast. The Food: 4/5 I had corned beef hash with hash browns, rye toast and two eggs. The toast was golden brown and was glazed with just the right amount of butter. My breakfast's vanguard was completed by a packet of marmalade. The eggs were over medium, just as I ordered, and the potatoes and hash crispy and browned. The cook did a good job. My two complaints on the food are that the hash was not homemade (I could tell it started out as a can of salty homogenous mush even though the cook did a great job making it edible) and the portion was small compared to the other offerings. I would rather have had more hash and less potatoes. All the same, the $6.99 price point is hard to beat. Still, there is at least one place in Traverse City that serves their hash fresh and made-to-order so this is where. I wish Randy's would do the same and this is where they lose their fifth star. The Atmosphere: 4/5 As I mentioned above, the decor was a bit lacking for a classic diner and I was a bit disappointed. A handful of Pepsi signs and paraphernalia are on the wall above the counter, which is too low. The staff is friends and seems on a first-name basis with the other customers. Nonetheless they paid more than adequate attention to me and were engaging. I will be back to Randy's soon, but I think I will pass on the hash until they start making it themselves. read more

The owner contacted me wanting to make my experience right. We had a talk, and he assured me that there had been done changes since my last visit, so I decided I would give it another chance. I mean it's popular for a reason, right? Our return trip was far and away better! The fryer wasn't down, the service was excellent, and the food was really good. My son and I are trying out all the diners in TC to find our new go-to breakfast spot. Our Breakfast at Randy's was not great. The side of pancakes we ordered to share was tasty enough, but one of them was still raw in the middle. We ordered our skillet breakfast with sausage instead of the ham. The sausage was a low quality link like you would get from GFS and not browned at all. It was just cut up hunks of gray meat. The peppers, onions, and potatoes were not cooked throughly. They were just heated in a pond of butter or oil and put in the serving dish. The cheese was just two American slices thrown on top of the greasy uncooked concoction. The only part of this that was prepared adequately were the eggs. With so many other great choices in TC, I'm sure we will never eat there again. Do yourself a favor and go to Rounds Diner on 8th, or J&S on S. Airport instead. Those are our top two pics so far. read more

I'm torn between giving it 3 or 4 stars- but comparing it to other places I have given four stars, I just can't give it 4- however it is certainly more like 3.5 and slightly better than average. Went there with my friend- for two on the town ( buy one get one free) we initially told our waitress to split the bill until we realized we wanted it all on one bill- I knew his must have been a hassle for her, and she handled it very professionally and with courtesy! They claim their coffee is the best in the area, it is good but I think that's a little too bold of a claim. We had the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer- they were nothing special but you get what you pay for (3.49) I had the meatloaf dinner special, for 7.49 the amount of food I received was more than adequate. The meatloaf was very good. The potatoes were solid . My coleslaw was nothing special. The peas were bland ( unseasoned) and my dinner roll was from GFS. Now was my plate of food worth 7.49? Absolutely- but it was nothing that made me say wow what an amazing plate at a great price. My friend ordered a burger and fries, the fries were above average- and the burger was solid. Again a very solid plate of food but nothing special. I know I know you get what you pay for, and this place does certainly deserve 3.5 stars. Would I return?
