After eating here, my perception of Vietnamese food has completely changed. I only ever tried pho and vermicelli, but I saw that Bun Rieu was really popular here and had to order it. It was soooo good. I also can't find it at many other restaurants, so I really lucked out with this place. It's a tomato and seafood based soup, I think, but they go really well together. The noodles really soak up all the flavor in the soup, which was also really thick and flavorful. They throw in a ton of toppings that all taste really good after simmering in the soup. It's a bit on the salty side, but the noodles cut the saltiness. Pork blood was actually a really nice addition to the dishes Huge portions, so you can definitely share with others. This past time I went with a co-worker and decided to get away from my usual pho order. My co-worker raved about the broken rice plate with grilled shrimp. Originally, they brought out the broken rice with pork chops and he doesn't eat pork and they gave us no grief on changing the plate. I had the shaking beef, I would rate it a 7/10. There's paid parking in most of downtown, but you can find some free spots a few blocks away. Service was fast. I used to eat at the Rang Dong in downtown Oakland many years ago and was pleasantly surprised to see the owners moved this great pho spot to Alameda. The owners are lovely and have always been. Friendly, welcoming, warm. The food is consistent and very good so if you're looking for a hot bowl of soup or tasty and simple Vietnamese food this is a great spot. We had the beef with meatball and chicken pho. Both were a hit and the fried rolls were excellent. I said hello to the owners and discovered this was indeed the Oakland spot I had frequented. The staff is also very friendly and the restaurant is clean and cozy. So glad to be reunited with Rang Dong and I'll be coming here and supporting this wonderful business whenever I'm on the island! As I passed by this restaurant today, I realized that I had time and a lovely parking spot right in front... so I took it. Five minutes after this sudden urge, I was inside ready to order. What I ordered: Pho Tai Nam Gan (Pho with rare steak, beef brisket, and beef tendon) -I smelled the MSG wafting from the bowl. As usual, I took the first spoon of broth to taste before it became contaminated with my lovely additions. First impression...? bland. I added the usual: basil leaves, lime, hoisin sauce, and sriracha. Sadly, it saved it only ever so slightly. Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce -I'm used to getting only 2 spring rolls cut in half... but here, they gave me 3. Not bad, if you ask me. They were decently stuffed, and they did not cheap out on the shrimp. Right on! The hot tea was standard grade... borderline watered down. Oh well, I don't often expect stellar tea at places like these. Too bad their Pho wasn't all that great. It would've been nice to have had a better than good Pho spot so local to me. The folks were very nice and the restaurant environment is very warm. I felt serviced well enough, and left alone sufficiently. For a pho restaurant, the dining room was quite large. We were sat next to a bunch of middle school boys who were left unattended (so you can only assume what we over heard...) and we were brought some rather bland tea. I asked to start off with the fish cake app, which was very spongy and I doused in Siracha sto that they'd have some flavor. I ended up dousing it so much that I needed some ice water, which took way too much effort to get. I asked my server, then watched the clock. Four minutes later I asked her again and then she got it for me. Now, I understand if it's busy and she's working tons of tables, but the only people in the restaurant were myself and my friend and the group of little boys. Come on. Day two of noodles for dinner and this time, it was all about the Pho. I did another search for Pho in Oakland and was surprise to find out that there were only a few joints. Table cloths, outdated tiles and drabe colors solidify how outdated this place it. What made up for this and more was the staff! Omg, the older woman and man that run this place are the sweetest couple I've ever had in a restaurant in Oakland. They were so inviting and really catered to my needs. At the end of service, they were appreciative of my business and really made me feel special. That alone will keep me coming back! For dinner, I had the Pho Tai Chin for $7.75. The price can't be beat! The soup was huge and totally worth the price tag. This beef noodle soup came with rare steak and well done brisket. The soup was filled with onions and really helped bring a crunchy texture. The soup was great and such a pleasant dish for a brisk night. They also served complimentary hot tea which I totally appreciated, being a heavy tea drinker. This place is gold to me! I'm gonna try other soups when I return. Probably the best overall pho place I've been to yet! I came here upon the recommendation of my friend's bf who said this was the best Bun Rieu he's ever had. I ordered the Bun Rieu, my friend had the pho and my bf had the Bun Bo Hue. Every bowl was super bomb (although this could be attributed to the post-NYE hang over). The Bun Bo Hue was not as spicy as other places have it so it was incredibly palatable and delightful and flavorful. The pho broth was tasty before seasoning (which is rare). My Bun Rieu was delicious, though I only had one other experience with it (at Pho Kim Long in Milpitas). The owner lady was super nice and our tea pot was refilled even before we asked. The restaurant was also very clean and the menus were nice (not sticky). The prices are a buck or so steeper than you'd find at a run of the mill pho place (it was ~$8/ bowl) but its worth it! Also good to note that everything comes in one size. We noticed a stir fried vegetable medley at the table next to us that looked really good. Will be returning for sure! read more
