We loved this place for lunch today! It is a funky little dining room - maybe a converted Wienerschnitzel? - on Park, surrounded by windows that make it feel bright and cheerful. We ordered the basics: pho tai and bun with grilled pork, plus mango smoothies. Everything was impeccable. The pho broth was clear, delicate, and redolent with star anise. The raw beef was nicely thin-sliced, and the pho noodles were wonderfully springy. The bun was just as lovely, with perfectly charred pieces of marinated, tender pork and excellent vermicelli noodles. You order at the counter or at a kiosk and pay, and then your food and serving ware is brought to your table. The meal didn't come out super fast, but that is because it was quite busy for weekend lunchtime (every table was full), and this is clearly a family business with the dad at the counter and the mom making each dish to order in the bustling kitchen. The owners were seated together at a back table by the time we left, and we exchanged happy thank yous - we felt very well taken care of and very satisfied with our healthy, tasty lunch, and this will be our family's new go-to spot when we are craving pho. read more

First time trying Vietnam House yesterday with our two toddlers. Firstly, they do not have actual baby chairs they have a thomas train booster seat tied to a chair. My 16 month old almost kept falling out from the side or almost tipping with the chair. Food wise we ordered two brisket phos with tendon. Brisket was ok and broth is okay. However the tendon did not seem fresh or properly cleaned. The pho actually made all of us have stomach ache shortly after eating here. Also ordered a pork banh mi veggies tasted fresh but the pork was a bit dry. Service is ok, but the tables were sticky and the utensils all seem run down. read more

It used to be good, BUT today, the people were dismissive; the guy pressed the 10% tip himself ( after the service and amount of food I got) I didn't think they deserved anything extra). So we order our food, everything came up to almost $70. Now remind you if the food was good, we wouldn't complain about the price. When they brought the basil, bean sprouts, lime out, those were left over. Was so old, dry no juice in the lime. The banh mi sandwich they gave us was old, dry hella days ago meat in the sandwich. The restroom was so nasty and dirty. No toilet paper or paper towel. After the lady took our order her ass was no where to be found. It's like she went the kitchen and took a nap. I love the repositioning of this hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant. It's still a casual sit down spot but it reminds me about the Vietnam experience so well. Though, the prices of increased for obvious economic trading, inflation, and better wages, Vietnam House still is one of my favorite Vietnamese spots in Alameda. I always order the same thing, chicken with vermicelli and an egg roll. It's a rare day where I found myself leisurely walking down Park St. craving Vietnamese pho. The service is genuine and the food is delicious. It was relaxing eating here at 3:30pm while the hustle and bustle is calm. Definitely hit the spot, thanks so much!! Happy Retirement, Auntie! This place "feels" like Vietnam. Especially during this heatwave season. I gave this place a visit for a banh mi and their signature coffee. It did not disappoint! It's a small corner cafe with not much seating but if you're able to have a sit down, you'll have an enjoyable afternoon. Great local mom and pop Vietnamese restaurant that serves delicious food. We've been ordering food from here for over a year. They use fresh ingredients and all the dishes we've tried are very tasty. My husband likes their bbq pork Bahn Mi sandwich and I usually go for their Pho bowls or grilled pork with vermicelli noodles and egg roll. We often share the crispy pork egg rolls or the fresh shrimp rolls. Their Vietnamese drinks are really yummy and refreshing. I go for the typical Thai iced tea and my husband's favorite is the Milky Way Thai coffee. Service is pretty fast. We order ahead to pick up and by the time we get there (15 min.) our food is ready. The owners and employees are always friendly and welcoming. The restaurant has plenty of seats inside and lots of parking outside. Of course, because they're in the former der Wienerschnitzel location. I highly recommend this place. read more

Honestly some of the best shrimp rolls I've had in a while. You can taste the shrimp flavor without fishiness and all balances great together. I haven't been to Vietnam House more than 5 times but I can say every time I've been here I've enjoyed the food. The portions are decent for the price and it tastes good. They have seated dining after you order at the window. The seating area is enclosed and though I haven't been on a hot day, they have big windows they can slide to let air in. There's a designated parking lot which makes it more appealing to dine at because parking on park street can be tough. I remember when this place use to be a Weinerschnitzel and I'm glad they didn't tear down the whole building before another restaurant moved in. read more

I eat pho about once a week. And it's been about 10 years since I ordered from this place. It's been 10 years because last time when I order to go, they made a mistake and I just stopped ordering from this place again. However I decided to give it another try today. I called to place an order to go Me: can I get a combination seafood pho. Employee: OK combination pho. Me: do you have large or extra large. Employee, we only have one size. Me: ok. And then the Employee just hung up the phone without telling me how much, how long or thank you. That's OK I wasn't expecting an excellent telephone communication anyway. The flavor is not bad. If only based on the food taste, it would be 4 stars. However, the portions are comically small. The Combo rice plate is portioned for a child. about a 1/2 of what you get from most Vietnamese restaurants. The Combo Pho is equally small. The dining space is an add-on room to the side of the building, and when you're sitting inside, it feels every bit like that. You don't really feel like you're inside a restaurant. If it was raining, you might still get wet. I needed a child seat for my 2 year old. They offer one that is a plastic booster seat strapped onto a dining chair. I think the owner hates everyone. When I asked for extra napkins on top of the 3 beverage napkins I was given for my family of 4, I was handed 2 more pieces of those 1 ply napkins. read more

WHEN: Wed @ 5:30pm It's about time I try a new Vietnamese spot in Alameda. Vietnam House seems like decent spot every time I walk by and I love their upgraded outdoor dining option. But I'll be taking my order to-go: #2 - Deep Fried Tofu - $8.50 These squishy triangle pieces of fried tofu was okay. It comes with a peanut dipping sauce that was just okay--I recommend sweet chili sauce more. It's still a decent snack that's healthy. #27 - Egg Roll w/Pork over Thing Rice Vermicelli - $16.50 The thin pieces of vermicelli is so soft, I absolutely enjoyed them! The grilled pork was flavorful and tender, and I loved the salad it comes with (mixed greens and julienne cucumbers). Dowse everything int hat sweet fish sauce, and its such an enjoyable plate. I will say that although the eggrolls are on the bland side, it's all better once you dip it in fish sauce. It was a 10 minute wait but I didn't mind since I know my food is made to order. I'm glad there was no line too and the staff seemed quite friendly. They have a lot of variety on their menu including vegetarian options and all sorts of Banh Mi sandwiches. Great place to go for lunch! I 100% recommend that you call to order ahead because when it gets busy, it could take a while for your order to get done. If you do order at the window, you have to go inside where the seating area is to access the pick up window. My go to is the BBQ pork bahn mi. I think I like it because it actually looks like grilled pork (vs other restaurants) and is thinly sliced, so that it is easier to eat! The bread is also not super hard. The service is ok. The building itself is kinda cool, since the roof is extended so much. There's a decent amount of tables and chairs inside, but it isn't the most comfortable. They do have their own parking lot, which is a huge plus for being in downtown Alameda. read more

I ordered the #13 rare steak and beef meat ball pho and the #5 shrimp spring rolls. Overall the meal was good for a quick bite. Some might think the lay out is strange due to having to order outside, but for me it shows originality. The pho bowls dont have any sizes which kind of doesn't make up for the prices. I thought the bowl was a little small for $15 and was hoping for a more generous amount, but I completely understand. The spring rolls are very refreshing and have a great crunch to them! read more

Came back to try their pho on a cold day. They now have an indoor station/kiosk to handle all orders and electronic payments. Cash payments still go to their cashier/server person seated next to the kiosk. Ordered the Pho special combo, which includes all the varieties of beef cuts they have. The meat and noodles were fine, yet broth didn't seem as well-flavored as I am used to. It seemed a bit bland, but I guess you can adjust it by adding hoison and sriracha sauce, as well as lemon juice. Pho broth should really stand on its own and it's not just this venue, but I have yet to find a bay area Pho venue that makes it like my grandma the traditional way which takes hours to cook and produces a very deeply layered tasting broth that is clear. My search continues for that bowl of pho. To their credit, I tried their mango beef salad last time, and that was really good, so maybe it just depends on what you order here. read more

Came during lunch time. This is a self serve restaurant where you place your order at the window and then pick up your order on the side window. If you're looking for a restaurant with service, this is not your place. The bun rieu (crab paste noodle soup) is a lit on the sweet side. Not enough tomato in it and not generous on the crab paste either. My friend ordered this noodle with the meat on the side. The meat is on the sweeter end as well. I've been on the quest for the perfect spicy bahn mi for a few months now (it's not a difficult quest...I absolutely LOVE trying new places), but I have found the best so far! Vietnam House on Park Street in Alameda takes the prize. Run out of an old Wienerschnitzel (with the iconic triangular building), this Vietnamese hub is fabulous. I got the grilled pork bahn mi. It had perfectly pickled carrots and cucumbers, and fresh jalapeños. The bread was delicious and flaky, and the pork was marinated beautifully for a great sweet and bold flavor. I will absolutely be coming back here and I highly recommend you give it a try too. The prices are good and the service is quick, and there is adjacent covered seating right next to the building. Not authentic Vietnamese pho. Ordered a pho dac biet. Asked for XL but portions equals to medium bowl. The broth is very bland. They don't have tripe inside like an authentic bowl. Steak was well done already. Not much meat inside. You have to order at the register before sitting down. I requested for a cup of hot tea. The food came, waitress forgot my tea so I requested for my cup again and realize it cost $4 a pot which she did not mention at the register when I requested for the cup of hot tea. I just needed a personal cup so I got water instead. She returned right away with a cup of water in a paper cup. Ok, what an odd place. There are no sauce plates for you to use their condiments. You have to request it and they give you a large regular plate just for your sauce. If you want good authentic pho I suggest you go to pho king, ao sen, Hoang que, pho hunyh hiep in Oakland. This place is what I would define as tricking foreigners and people who don't eat pho much. Why did I come here then? This place is not the one. I went at like 4:45pm after a long day of work ordered a chiken pho #10 and my son ordered the all meat one #15 I ordered a sunny tea and some spring rolls. First the guy taking the order had no idea how to take orders. When I got the spring rolls I couldn't even eat half of one. They had this crispy crepe kinda thing inside and they was just not good. My pho the broth was just not good and to me the broth makes the whole pho! They didn't serve water I asked for some and it took so long to get it and to me I need fresh cilantro to add to my pho and it took them long to bring it also. My tea came so late too. My son said his pho was not bad but he said he didn't want to go back and I definitely will not return. I had mixed feelings due to reviews but my man told me to try it and never again. Ima charge my man the $60 I spent there. The only reason for the 2 stars was the tea! read more

I got the seafood soup with rice noodles. Their rice noodles are very good and that's what I liked the most. The size of the bowl of phó was the right size, and not too big, to where I felt full, but didn't waste a whole bunch of food. The service was okay. I lived in this area for many years and this is the first time I've tried Vietnam House. To start I was pleasantly surprised that there were seats available inside with heat lamps, and folks can enjoy a warm bowl of pho during the winter. I walked up the the kiosk to scan through the menu to order two sandwiches to go. I was skeptical about the size and taste, but once I got back home, I was able to try both orders. First of all, the flavors of the meat and marinade were quite bold. The bread was less crunchy and thinner than other places I've tried, I have to admit that the softness of the bread makes each bite seem more filling and tastier. The only suggestion I have is that they should be packing in more vegetables and pickled radish/carrots, as it felt like the meats were too overpowering. Each costs around $8.50-$9, which is the average price nowadays. Might be a bit steep for the service and quality that you are getting, but for the cost conscious individual it was quite convenient to order and pickup. Furthermore, as I was waiting for my order, the drink menu caught my eye and I noticed the variety of Vietnamese coffee and boba drinks that were available for around $6.50 each. So I'm considering giving it another go and next time order a few more items to go. read more

Came here yesterday for lunch. First time trying this restaurant. Ordered the grilled pork plate, grilled pork banh mi and the grilled pork rolls. Service was ok. I was handed my plate and there was a long black hair across my plate. I was starving so I just let it go and ate my food. It was freezing inside and the heaters weren't on. I feel like for $17 the grilled pork plate was really small portions, it was good though. My boyfriend had the banh mi and was complaining about the meat being nothing but fat and muscle. The spring rolls were okay- some places will kinda fry the nem nuong and it kinda crystallizes the fat/sugar in it mmmm but this place was more simple in preparation. The food is okay, nothing to really come by specifically to try them out. It's also not horrible. They took over the old wienerschnitzel that used to be here, got themselves an almost inside awning and boom, Vietnamese restaurant. One thing I will say though, in the environment of the pandemic, this place is pretty dirty. You can see directly into their kitchen (hot dog stand) and they are in flip flops, barely wearing that mask, still have the metal fork free for the taking at the counter. This was the case when I was there, so maybe they are on an off day. May come back if things get better with the pandemic but probably not until then. read more

I feel awful leaving a review like this for a local business, but it really needs to be shared. I've been frequenting this spot for years for their Bahn mi. They've never been quite as great as the spots in Oakland around International, but they come close enough, especially for folks like me who are often too lazy to leave the island. Throughout the pandemic, I've felt it's important to support local shops, so I've picked up lunch at least a couple times a month from here. Last time I got lunch, it started with my usual routine--I phoned my order in ahead of time and headed over (they're usually fast for just sandwiches). I arrive, and go to the window, tell the lady my order, and she says it's almost up and accepts my payment. As I'm paying, I see another lady behind her pull out a baguette roll from the oven, and drops it on the floor, where it rolls underneath the oven. She picks it up with her tongs (she definitely saw me see her) AND PROCEEDS TO FILL IT WITH MEAT AND TOPPINGS LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. I ask lady #1 and point to the other one and say, she's not making *my* sandwich, is she? She says yes, and I explain that I just saw her drop the bread on the floor, and its not OK to serve that. She gives me a bothered look, there is a brief conversation between the two, and then she sighs and says they'll make a new one. No apology--just an air of inconvenience. Having already paid (and am cheap), I begrudgingly accepted and ate my second sandwich, but on principle I just can't go back here. They absolutely would have served me the floor bread if I didn't see it and say anything. What else have they served me that fell on the floor? ugh...
