This review is about the take-out service. I order from here relatively frequently and would normally give them 4 stars, but last night, we received one wrong dish and one that was so spicy that my husband had a coughing an sneezing fit. This is after we specified ZERO spice. Two entrees were inedible. So I called the restaurant to let them know what happened and they said because we ordered with DoorDash I should just call them. Well let's be clear here people, the issue had nothing to do with DoorDash and everything to do with the restaurant. I told the woman on the phone this, but again, ridiculous counter with essentially a "not my problem". I will not be ordering from this restaurant again. They clearly don't give a lick about customer experience if they don't want to take responsibility for a really bad experience. DoorDash did offer a reimbursement for the 2 items and did handle the complaint very professionally. Rangoon Ruby? Nope. So long Rangoon Ruby! We used to eat in the restaurant in Burlingame and order from the one in San Carlos but they will not get our business again. I understand making a mistake, but own it and offer to do something about it. It costs you a lot less to remedy one bad order than to completely lose a regular customer. And making your delivery service pay for the mistake? All I can hope for is that it came out of Rangoon Ruby's pocket. read more

Never liked a salad like this one, different ! Pepper chicken- was good, have had better. Samosa- i have a pre-defined idea about Samosa (Indian samosas), but this one still stood out.. Must try! I've been to Rangoon Ruby on a couple of occasions, each time during lunch. The location is at downtown San Carlos, with large glass windows, with gives the inside a clean bright look with natural daylight. One of their most unique items is the tea salad. They mix lettuce, tomatoes and nuts with a fermented tea paste. While this may not sound very palatable, it is delicious! I've also tried their mango chicken, the eggplant entrée, and some other items. They're all really good. They serve coconut juice in shell, which is carved into a jar like shape. read more

The teas leaf salad is still ok, but the chicken jalapeño dish was served luck warm and tasted like dry Mexican seasoning on badly cooked ground meat it so much dry spice it was inedible.. the y soup was also barely warm and had no broth with chunks of chicken again none of the other ingredients. The restaurant was empty and as they took our full serving dishes away noone asked if everything was ok. We all left and said we definitely will no go back to pay $120 for 4 horribly dishes one inedible. Like others have said...they used to be good but have really fallen off and we won't be going back. 1\ food is pretty average and not too flavorful. I had to ask for chili sauce to give my dish some flavor (and they charged me $2 for it too!), 2\ service is friendly but patchy and poor...the server took one drink order, fetched it, and then took the next order, fetched it, and so on; she interrupted us to clear the table even though one diner was still eating, etc, and 3\ it's not a good value at all...one appetizer and four mains--without alcohol or dessert mind you--was nearly $140 (w/ tax and tip)! There's a reason the restaurant isn't busy on Friday. There are many other better choices on Laurel St. Do yourself a favor and try one of them. read more

I came here for date night trying to discover something I've never had before. The waiters were all so lovely and made my dining experience excellent and safe, especially during these times of COVID 19. We ordered the Burmese Pad Thai, Samosas, Basil Chili Chicken. I was super impressed with the samosas and the basil chili chicken. The Bernese Pad Thai was delicious, but I was expecting something a bit different. Not sure if they had changed management or kitchen staff, both the quality and taste have gone downhill so much. We went with high expectations since we really love Burmese food. Sadly the food did not impress us much. Palata Chicken was nice. Ohnoh Kawt soup and Basil Chili Chicken - both were average and lacking in flavour. We ordered Rangoon Chicken Curry and had to send it back because it was just too bland (we were not charged for it). Garlic Noodle with chicken was nice but lacked a real garlic punch. Rangoon Shrimp the only dish that saved our dinner! About service - for some reason they got all the dishes together. Just ordered via grubhub for pick up. Got the garlic noodles with tofu. Ordered it vegan (no egg noodles). It was ready in literally five minutes. I've gotten this before and it's been amazing but today it's a bit bland. Super excited to report that I requested "less plastic" and not only did they leave off the disposable utensils but they also noted to package my noodles in a paper box. I usually come here for lunch for work and/or staff meetings. Never really disappointed, but I only wished that they had a lunch menu. Service and presentation were on point and everything looked good but that didn't always translate on how the food tasted. I would recommend trying the now-famous Tea Leaf Salad. It's refreshing and different. If you're there for a quick lunch meeting, I would also recommend getting Garlic Noodles with any kinds of meat/seafood you would like added to it. Not a bad restaurant at all, but not that special either. Overall, food is decently made. A little on the pricier side for most dishes, which makes it a littler hard for me to come back. I like the different type of cuisine here, since on this street there are already multiple pizza and Italian places. I enjoy the variety. Can't say I really liked this place, but it was okay. The best dish we ordered was the Sesame chicken- it was really good! The other 2 dishes were not very good- The "fiery tofu" and this noodle type dish. I wish the food came with side of rice but that costs extra for each entree. I would come back and try a few other menu items to see if I just chose poorly. Burmese in the city of San Carlos, and this is far from alleyway grub, this is fancy signature cuisine served on white linen cloth, where every plate forward is a work of meticulous craft, perhaps exceptional art. Whether it's noodles or a thick stew, there's a slurpirific taste coupled by a discreet simmering spice that goes with it. I can't ever remember ordering the remarkable PUMPKIN SALMON STEW from any Burmese restaurant before. White rice was enough to accompany it, and I loved the Burmese Iced Tea (a little chai-like), and together, my meal was wholesome and refreshing. I come here mostly for their tea salad and Samosa soup. Very disappointed with my lunch order today. I am usually a 5 star (love all their dishes - my absolute favorite restaurant on university ave) but today I ordered the tea salad for lunch and they brought it pre-mixed in a round dish instead of the square one! Not only that, it was super oily and hard for me to eat. The waitress said it was pre-measured portion of dressing but I have eaten this salad enough times that I am very sure they put too much oil in it! They are charging $14 (+ tax) and they bring out a pre-mixed salad with ZERO presentation - it the worst "looking" salad I have EVER been served in a high end restaurant. It looked "blah"!! I talked to the server and she explained that owners got rid of the square plates. And if they serve more than one order for tea salad, they will mix only the first one on table (my husband had ordered one which they mixed on table but the waiter seemed in a hurry - even though the restaurant was not very full). She further explained that it is to save time and it's their restaurant policy. For such a pricey restaurant, they need to provide the same experience, no matter how many of the same dish are being served. They risk loosing loyal customers like me. Note: waitress was nice and offered to get a new salad made but I did not want to over eat or waste food, so just ate half instead. Consumed as much oil as I should have in my entire salad. This location is far less busy than Palo Alto -- there's always availability on OpenTable and it's a good place to have lunch/dinner and actually hear your other friends (as opposed to the PA location). So after giving Rangoon Ruby in San Carlos several opportunities to redeem themselves, they can't seem to get anything right. Here are a couple of recent experiences: Last night, we had DoorDash deliver our dinner that included Nan Gyi Dok (noodles with coconut curry sauce) that tastes chemical-y. Like it had bleach or kitchen cleaner on it. It was completely inedible and was just tossed in the trash. We also had Fiery Beef Tofu that was overly spiced and had several pieces of lamb in it. Now some of you may be thinking that would be a nice little bonus. I do not. I find the smell and taste of lamb to be repulsive. Another huge fail. The third dish we had was Sesame Chicken (not really a Burmese dish), which should be easy to make successfully. Not for Rangoon Ruby. It was too sweet, and some of the pieces were simply fried batter, and there was very little chicken to be found. On another visit several months back, I had ordered some food to go directly from the hostess at 5 pm when the restaurant was virtually empty. I told her I would be sitting outside (where she could see me) and that I would appreciate it if she could let me know when it was ready, to which she replied "sure." After sitting outside for about 20 minutes, I finally saw the kitchen bring a bag to the hostess stand. I went inside and asked if that was my food and she replied, "no." So I went and waited outside for another 10 minutes before going back in to check on my food. I asked if she could double-check to see if that was my food which she did. And SURPRISE, it was my food. Total waste of time and extremely incompetent customer service. Needless to say, we will never go back and will be telling friends and family to avoid that place at all costs. read more

I wholeheartedly desire to give Rangoon Ruby another fighting chance though, as their Yelp page is undoubtedly adorned with affirmative feedback. I visited for the first time a few weekends ago, as one of my colleagues made a reservation for 2:00 pm. I was running on Filipino time, trying to locate the restaurant, so I arrived at approximately 2:45 pm. Essentially, we had to promptly dine and dash, so I did not have the opportunity to abundantly revere the dishes my colleague had ordered for us. Nevertheless, I was able to make an immediate all-encompassing judgment on the cuisine we had in front of us, despite the insufficient amount of time to fully devour our lunch meal. Despite the dreary shortfalls during my first visit, I sincerely wish to return to try their other acclaimed dishes. During my first lunch session here, I had the opportunity to try: + LETTUCE WRAP APPETIZER: Though superbly crunchy due to the crisp lettuce and its contents of fresh water chestnut, radish, and carrots, the chicken meat within the wrap was severely under seasoned and depleted of any moisture. However, the house sauce was positively appetizing. + COUNTRY STYLE BEEF CURRY ENTRÉE (served with Jasmine rice): Exceptionally savory sauce infused with melodious onion, garlic, red chili, and fresh lemongrass. Unfortunately, the drab beef was not tender, and was unpleasantly chewy and thick. + RANGOON CHICKEN CURRY (served with Jasmine rice): Chicken was noticeably more delicate than the dry country style beef. Sauce was just as delectable as the beef curry dish we ordered. SERVICE Despite the fact that we were the seemingly discourteous jerks that were delaying them from dinner preparation, our affable server was gracious and amusing. I asked first if they could cook without MSG, and some of the staff wasn't familiar with this flavor enhancer that I'm sensitive to. REVIEW IS FOR SAN CARLOS LOCATION ONLY. Have not tried Palo Alto. It's great to see such glowing reviews for a "Burmese" restaurant, though I am very sad to say it falls far short of anything authentic in terms of taste to traditional Burmese food. FYI - I actually stopped by after eating at Seiya down the street just to see if this could be another Burmese establishment I could support. Yes, I can pack it in. I wouldn't be so harsh if the name of the restaurant alluded to Asian Fusion or some other title that more accurately presented what it offers on the menu. But when you throw down that you are serving "Burmese Cuisine", you'd better deliver BURMESE cuisine. For those familiar with Asian foods, you can see the menu is a mix of Indian, Thai, and Burmese. Sure, these countries are all relatively close geographically, but that doesn't mean you can lump them together and call them "Burmese." My heritage is from Burma, and I was quite disappointed by the Burmese fare here which I am sad to say. Tea Leaf Salad - hard to mess this up as long as you have all the proper ingredients. It's mix and eat. Romaine lettuce is NOT one of the ingredients...when it first arrived on the table, I immediately told the server "you must have the wrong order"....when he said "tea leaf salad?" I knew I would never return here. It's like using spaghetti noodles in a Vietnamese Pho noodle soup, or like using American string beans for Chinese Szechuan style string bean dish...it just should NEVER happen. And this....this HAS happened here. What's the result?....a disappointing domestication of a hallmark Burmese dish...skimped ingredients and texture that is SO WRONG in SO MANY WAYS. Country Style Lamb - wrong cut of beef with a flat sauce that is nothing reminiscent of the taste/texture/aroma of the authentic curry style beef of Burma. Nan Gyi Dok - another hallmark dish that highlights the subtle nuances of Burmese cuisine with coconut, fried onions, and other garnishing to tantalize the tastebuds. But sadly, 3RD STRIKE! All I could taste was the drenched coconut sauce overwhelming the small portions of fried onions and other spices that balance this dish. For real authentic Burmese flavors, look to Mingalaba in Burlingame or Mandalay on California in SF. Sure...you can go with the crowds if you like and wait away hours for Burma Superstar too, but why waste your time. Ruby R....wanted to love you, but you ain't up to snuff...what can I say. I can't believe i have never written a review about this place before. I have probably been here about 15 times since i moved back to the bay area. Rangoon Ruby was actually my first experience with burmese food and man i wasn't disappointed. We ALWAYS get the tea leaf salad to start (which is AMAZING) and the palata with vegetarian curry. Their most popular item is definitely the tea leaf salad. I see almost every single table order this thing. They get their tea leaves from Burma and prepare it at the table. The dish has such an interesting depth of flavor it's like nothing i have ever tasted. Do yourself a favor and try it. As for the palata, the flakey pancake-like bread that comes out with the it is to die for delicious. We have had a variety of different dishes here but i think the stand out dishes are the walnut prawns and the garlic pork. I could easily eat both of those every single day. Mango chicken is pretty good too but nothing to write home about. Definitely get the coconut rice it is sooooooo good. You really cant go wrong ordering off of this menu. Go here. One star due to cost of food and "Affordable Care Act Tax" that is added to the check. I was aware of the cost and have no problem paying a premium for good food. However, I don't know if it was worth the cost per dish. Plus we weren't notified of the ACA tax til the bill came - had I known in advance, I would have boycotted this place! I disagree with organizations that do this. It is the cost of doing business! Great service. Food was good but not worth the price. Spice level is mild only but they do have a great pepper sauce that's quite spicy. They are unique in that the bathroom has a TV screen and mouthwash. read more

This place is always consistent. They have DELICIOUS food. I especially love their calamari appetizer. I've never had a dish that didn't taste amazing! (But they did get rid of my favorite - crispy salmon.) They are very accommodating when I ask for the heat too. This is one of the few places where I can ask for them to make my food hot, and it makes ME sweat. (I eat hotter than pretty much anyone than I've ever met, so that's saying something.) The staff always are quick and helpful. The place is clean and well decorated and lit. The place almost always requires that I have a reservation, which isn't a bad thing. If you don't have one, you'll more than likely end up sitting at an outside table, or waiting. However, I've begun to notice that over time, I see and hear what appears to be the manager berating the servers quite often. You can occasionally hear her from the kitchen. She says some pretty mean things to people. Nothing that I'd care to repeat here openly on Yelp. Most of the comments are that bad. It's no wonder that they have a "now hiring" banner out front. I'd imagine that they're losing staff due to her. I can't in good conscience continue to frequent this restaurant as long as I know this is happening. It's not right to treat people this way - even if you do have some of the best food in San Carlos. :( read more

When I saw the signage a few weeks ago, I promised myself I'd try the San Carlos location since I love the Palo Alto location so much. We went for a leisurely lunch - I suggested that we go at 11:30am to beat the Friday lunch crowd and sure enough, it got crowded at noon. The interior was cozy and also had the cool glass chandeliers like at the PA location. We ordered Palata with curry sauce, Tea Leaf salad, and Mango Swai (White-flesh fish tossed in wok with basil, onions and mango puree, served with fresh mango on the side). Palata was delicious, as usual and the vegetarian curry was actually quite good, I expected the curry to be a bit thicker, like the yellow curry. The Tea Leaf Salad was crunchy, flavorful and always a favorite. I mean, who doesn't like sliced deep fried garlic? Max, our awesome server suggested that we get the Mango Swai on a hot day and the dish was sweet, light and went perfectly with the coconut rice we shared. Nederlander was impressed with our meal and he said that we'd have to go again one day to try more dishes. The only problem was that it got really warm because we sat near the window and being in this heat wave it got a little uncomfortable. There is only street parking available which is extremely hard to find if you go during the San Carlos Farmers' Market on Thursday nights. The fermented leaves is definitely an acquired taste but since my co-worker's Vietnamese she's used to strong flavors and enjoyed the salad. Of the two entrees, we liked the Garlic Shrimp & Eggplant more than the Chicken Kebat. The chicken in the kebat was over-cooked and dry. Not very appealing. The Garlic Shrimp & Eggplant was more flavorful as well. The palata was fairly thick and wasn't as crispy as how I normally enjoy it. The coconut rice was slightly crunchy and did have a good amount of coconut flavor. The Sooji is a baked pudding w/ poppy seeds. The texture is like the Vietnamese Xôi dessert (a bit mushy like polenta). It wasn't overly sweet and something different to try, but not something I'd care to order again. I had thought this location also sold cocktails since I had a rough day and needed a drink, but was bummed to find out that they didn't when we arrived. I opted to try their Burmese Iced Tea instead. The Burmese Iced Tea is a black tea and typically made with condensed & evaporated milk. Not overly sweet or strong, so I enjoyed it. We loved how the house water is lightly flavored w/ cucumber. Very refreshing on a warm evening. Service was decent. Our waters were refilled and plates cleared away quickly (with the amount of food we ordered and such small tables, we hardly had room to eat). I wished the tables weren't so close together as well as we were nearly touching elbows with fellow patrons. =/ Wouldn't recommend with groups larger than 4. Rangoon Ruby sounds vaguely burmese. decor is upscale western. pics of burmese life on the walls gives rangoon an "authentic" pricey vibe. eats: garlic noodles w/roast duck (10) -fetticine noodles mixed in subtle garlic sauce, untastable. i came here to celebrate a friend's birthday last month...while it was a sunday evening, it was also mother's day, so this place was pretty full @ 18.30, and even more so as the evening progressed. our table for 2 was in a small corner at the front of the restaurant, and while space was a bit tight, we had a view of the entire dining area as well as laurel st (downtown san carlos). i wasn't super hungry (probably ate too much for lunch that day, and was snacking in the afternoon), so i just ordered the tea leaf salad ($14), which is a popular, traditional treat unique to burma. this salad was actually really pretty, and showcased a mix of burmese tea leaves, fried garlic, yellow beans, peanuts, sesame seeds, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno peppers and dried shrimp. i requested no jalapenos since i can't handle the spice! the salad tasted absolutely delicious, with so many unique ingredients, and even though there was no dressing, and just a bit of lemon juice, there was enough flavor to keep my taste buds entertained. the ambiance was quite nice, a bit on the quieter side, with moderate lighting...it would certainly make for a nice, romantic dinner for 2 or intimate dinner for 4. service was on point, as food was brought out relatively quickly, and our waiter refilled our water glasses without us prompting him to do so. highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who is a fan of burmese or southeast asian cuisine! read more

So rare is it I am this happy with a place. The whole place drips with luxury class dining BUT without that associated price tag which is incredible. Like seriously. My palate is picky and even more so when it comes to noodles and Asian associated cuisine. While this is the first time I've had Burmese food I can easily say it will not be my last. So glad I came here especially. I got the fried tofu appetizer and it was superb and lightly crunchy with the sweet and sour sauce that wasn't overbearing but the tofu was so so so good and just for perfectly. I always order fried calamari or fried tofu all over and they do it justice. One of those simple dishes that many can screw up but not here. The garlic noodles were very pad Thai-esque but oh man the flavor was bursting with all kinds of herbal notes and it was like some Symphony in my mouth with tears rolling down my cheeks... It was that good. I got it with duck and it is so very hard to find good duck anywhere but it was just flawlessly executed and it was tender and not gamey at all. Just tender and flavorful. So good. Would come back if I could find somebody to go with me every day of the week. Such an awesome place with obvious attention to ambiance and decor which is highly appreciated and so unusual in San Carlos to find such a respectably tasty establishment. Went here last night and it was more than we had hoped! We've never been to a Burmese restaurant so we didn't know what to expect nor did we know about the Palo Alto one. We ordered the following: 1) Tea Leaf Salad - it was good but we the the fried garlic was a little too much and over powered the rest of the flavors 2) Basil Chili Beef - juicy, spicy and amazing! Remember to tear the basil up so you get it in every bite. 3) Rangoon Lemongrass Chicken - same notes as above...delicious! 4) Burmese Curried Pork - pork was tender and full of flavor! Loved it! 5) Nan Gyi Dok - the presented the ingredients separated on the plate and mixed it at our table. This is a must order!!! Carlos was our server and he was really attentive and nice. Considering that the place has only been open a week, it would have been nice if the owner came by our table but that's just a suggestion. Definitely still 5 stars! read more

First in-person dining visit during COVID, but frequent diner pre-COVID. Super disappointed..."clean" plates had old food caked on. Ordered my usual tea leaf salad. Salad arrived pre-mixed (vs the usual presentation so you can see the ingredients and have it mixed at the table) and missing about half the usual ingredients and quantity. Perhaps give customers the option of mixing the salad on their own. I feel badly for the restaurant during these tough times, but this was not a pleasant experience and it was pricey. read more
