Our friends from Houston love this place and it was the first spot they took us to when we were visiting, and I understand why! The back patio was expansive and a great place to hang out--there was even a waterfall and a playground for kids! Definitely only get something of this size in Texas! Nice place. Parking is not ideal, it is limited and packet in the small parking lot. The smell of hookah meets you as soon as you walk up to the entrance. Thankfully they have a non smoking area but it is somewhat small- got lucky and it was pretty empty when I went. Best lamb I've ever had hands down! The flavors were there, no questions about it- the meat was thoroughly cooked (well done) and surprisingly tender and quite juicy.. The rice was rich and buttery and leaves you wanting more! The bread is fresh of the grill and is very light and fluffy. The lemon mint juice is a must, I'm addicted to it and compared to other places Ranosh by far has the best one. Chicken plate "ranosh chicken": 4.5/5: the rice was well cooked in all the dishes. The bone-in chicken was very tender and seasoned well, and I was very impressed by it. The yogurt garlic sauce was creamy and very addicting and went well with every dish we ordered. I would order this dish in the future. Chicken, beef, and lamb mix platter 3/5: Ranosh does chicken very well. Like the bone-in chicken, the chicken breast chunks were also juicy and tender. We were served cold food on inquiring were told by the server we only serve cold bread when asked to fix it they reheat the barbq chicken which then lost the taste. Came here because of the outdoor seating and a suggestion from the old teacher I was meeting up with. It was surprisingly empty on MLK Day, just 1 or 2 other tables occupied outside on a beautiful sunny winter day. The food was merely average to me. The flavor of the chicken wasn't particularly noteworthy and leaned more on the dry side than moist and tender. The pita was more crisp than soft, and as others have said it is quite large. They did have backgammon boards and cards, which were so much fun. May be more packed later in the evening. The outdoor space is huge with tables and has a bit of a back- yardish vibe. Very casual and laid back. I have been to many hookah cafes around Houston and have heard great things about Ranoush. I decided to go visit them after the Astros game (GO ASTROS) this past Friday night. I love the fact they are open til 3am (like most hookah cafes) and loved the ambience. They have 2 fountains outside along with a projector playing popular middle eastern music. I really like the natural look of the outside patio where the trees and the fountains were. Very relaxing. The food was fresh and amazing. We started with the humus as a starter. The persian styled flat bread that they brought out was AMAZING. It was the size of a medium pizza! It was hot and fresh out if the oven. I ordered the #5 (chicken kabob plate with tablouli instead of the rice) and the lamb kabob dish. The chicken dish had a great flavor but there wasn't anything extraordinary. The lamb dish however was soooo tender and delicious! Altogether, we loved the vibe and food on a late night. I would rate the shisha a 6 out of 10. Not the best I ever had but loved the fact they had not only the disposable mouth pieces but also the disposable top pieces of the hose of the hookah piece. Very clean!! I don't think this place would be the first place I'd recommend to others but it definitely wasn't a bad experience. Food: we ordered an assortment of grilled meats, hummus, baklava, and a cheese based dessert. Overall the entree was good. One of the meats was rather dry but taste was decent. Hummus and bread were standard like many other hookah bars. The cheese dessert was tasty and not overly sweet. Language barriers prevented us from finding out exactly what it was though. The baklava filling was a difficult to bite and the pastry part was hard to cut through too. I would give it another chance but this instance did not impress me. I forgot to mention that we ordered a "Moroccan" tea that complimented the hookah and food rather well. Hookah: we ordered lemon and it was very smooth initially. After a while, the smoke became rather harsh from ashes; the coals were switched frequently. In my experience at other hookah bars, the people that replace coals will typically blow out the bowl so there are no ashes. That wasn't the case here... not sure if it's fair to expect that though. Regardless, we were able to get a decent experience with some manual cleaning. However, the fajitas are a little salty so I won't be getting those. The side bread they serve was absolutely delicious! If you mix the garlic sauce and sambal they give you it also is a good combo to try. Ranosh was another spot about town that I've heard rather mixed reviews about (like Tiny Boxwood) so it was time to come investigate for myself. I am going to play Henry Clay to reconcile Michelene's twosies with Long's five star review for this place. I think foursies is overly generous for me for a number of reasons, but since it's a place I would definitely visit again I will round them up rather than leaving them in the minor league with three stars or less. What Ranosh is: relaxing, inviting, large outdoor patio area replete with luxuriant classy white girl touches like fountains, waterfalls, numerous napkins available on your table, and a stable table off of which to eat your food. This paragraph is why foursies, not five stars when it became time to hit enter. I would come chillax here; you should come chillax here. It is that kind of place. What Ranosh is NOT: A+ service at your table; fancy "imma go look cute in a club and have people look at me" atmosphere; classy Brennan's style taking-care-of-you-like-you-are-the-center-of-the-universe. Ranosh is more like Niko Niko's on Montrose than say, Cafe Luxor on Washington or even Cafe Layal Midtown when you get the right waiter (the 17 year old that is always on his game.) We never received silverware at all. I had to be the obnoxious guy and ask for water when our glasses had been empty for over ten minutes. The menu lists food prices - but it is not available online to peruse in advance, nor do the "appetizer" selections have prices on the menu unlike the plates so you need to ask in advance. This paragraph is why I initially was thinking two or three stars at best before reflecting on the patio and the serenity that comes with the rushing water of the fountains, the dense foliage blocking out the traffic on Fondren, and the sounds of the Mediterranean coming through the speakers. It is a place you need an extra push in one direction to think well of, and that extra push is going to come from the patio, not from the service. My dining companion rolled in at 6pm and the patio was empty. I like that kind of thing, because of people. By the time we left at 8pm the patio was starting to fill up with other tables but there was still plenty of extra tables, it is a big patio. One thing I instantly disliked is that they were picking up the tables over our head and shuffling them around the patio. I really dislike that because things get dropped on me - an entire server's platter one time at a terrible casino in Atlantic City. And I was wearing a shirt that had actually been cleaned this month so I really did not want anything dropped on me, or thrown at me in the off chance they actually knew who I was. The waiter looked surprised I was inquiring about the notably absent price of the appetizers, like people just order them with reckless abandon and I am the weird one wanting to know what this meal is going to cost me in advance - as already noted, with the menu not available online, that frustrated me a little. My dining companion and I decided to split the hummus and the falafel appetizer portions. The falafel is four large pieces, not the buy-frozen-in-bulk pathetic sized bites you can get from the supermarket. The pita for the hummus is the size of the entire large plate tortilla-style, so it's big and reminds you that Taco Cabana around the corner. The hummus is the traditional serving bowl style size. While it is not bad by any means, it is suitable for consumption and not worth writing home to granny about - so there you have the nod to Niko Niko's hummus which more or less, is identical. The falafel made daddy happy because it was big and beautiful, and deeply fried, so it made you feel good 'bout #merica. The falafel came with one small container of dipping sauce which I have no clue what ingredients they used, which is not a good sign for someone, so I avoided it. There were also two tiny pallets of the P.F. Chang style red pepper dipping sauce. Meh. The deep frying obviated the need for dipping sauce but good for them that they were there. Attempting to leave the waiter had not been seen in a spell so we had to just stand up and go inside to try and pay. Having tracked down the waiter he sat there and stared us down as we figured out the tip, which just meh, probably should have been expected. If you want to relax in a type B, fuck-it-bucket (it's a David Sedaris reference to a story about his brother helping helping their father weather the post-hurricane event) way then come here and chill - I am noting the lack of service and other things, but don't feel like it significantly impacted my visit. And I laughed on the way out because my Pandora definitely did some geolocation trick for the neighborhood because my Aesop Rock station turned into five straight songs of Chicano hip-hop such as Mr. Criminal's "Last of a Dying Breed." Ambiance/Clientele/Service - people that appreciate this kind of food are here, but this was definitely a neighborhood community spot, not a white linen/wine list kinda place. Everyone was welcome. Food - they give you a LOT. I was surprised by how much he brought out. Falafel - I'm guess that it's authentic, and it was piping hot from the fryer when it got to my table. But I've got this mental image of the perfect ball of falafel that I just can't seem to shake. The Rice - good. I'm a fan of this place, solely because of their hummus. It's super cheap and it comes with super huge pita bread and hot sauce that gives the hummus a little kick. The bread comes out so warm and soft and it tastes fresh. Ugh, I can't get enough of it. In fact, I'm craving some right now.
