Best Middle Eastern cuisine in the city! When I first became vegan, nearly a decade ago, Ranoush was one of my first safe havens. I'm certain that it used to have a different name, but I cannot recall what that was. VEGANS & VEG*NS: I suggest the Vegetarian Platter. They will veganize the vegetarian platter upon request. Mine came with hummus, 2 pieces of falafel, Baba Ganoush, Moutabal, and for my 5th option I requested Batata Harra instead of the Tabbouleh. I love the lemony zest to their hummus. The falafel is always flavorful and perfectly crisp on the outside, savory on the inside. I always get a side of their Arabic fries. It used to come with a garlic topping, but they no longer serve it that way. (enter sad face here) Now it comes with ketchup and a garlic mayo dip of sorts (which was not vegan). I used to get the Arabic garlic bread too, but the Arabic garlic bread is no longer vegan; they now use the garlic mayo as a spread. I tried the vegan-friendly Zattar bread, which came in cuts filled with thyme and sesame. It must be an acquired taste; I won't order that again. The platter came with a basket of vegan-friendly pita bread. Service was great. When I questioned my waiter the first night, he didn't get annoyed when I asked him to double check with the kitchen regarding the garlic bread. I knew that it used to be vegan so I requested he confirm. He did, and returned to tell me that it is no longer vegan. I returned the very next day for lunch and we had Sugar as our waitress. She said she's been working there since "the beginning" and she recalled when the garlic bread was vegan. She confirmed that menu changes were made (for unknown reasons) and they stopped using the vegan-friendly garlic toppings on the fries and the bread. Vegan items are clearly marked on the menu with a "V." It's a great option for STL vegans, especially when dining with non-veg friends and/or family. My non-veg family and friends all seem to love the Chicken Shawarma. Portions are huge and they do have $10 daily lunch specials from 11am-4pm. read more

I have been going here since I was in middle school! The food has always been amazing and service is really great! The last time I went, I was there with a friend of mine and it was super cute/snowy out and most places had closed early. We were desperate for food and to our luck Ranoush was open! We went in there and of course no one was out and about but we were treated like queens!!! The service was outstanding! I had the vegetarian platter and literally everything that was on it was amazing. The pita bread was to die for. Which if I recall correctly they said that it was made to order fresh. Sooo that was awesome. We also got to try to the Kahwa (arabic coffee). If you are like us and love a strong coffee, I highly recommend it!! And last but definitely not least, we had the baklava and it was UH MAY ZINGGGGG. Anyways, the moral of the story is to just go there and try it out. Ask about the menu!! Try new things! Ah, Ranoush came of somewhat of a shock to me the other day. Walking up and down Delmar, Middle Eastern food seemed like a solid choice. Even when a place doesn't do hummus or falafel the way I like it, it's usually edible and filling at the very least. But it wasn't of "at the very least" caliber. Nope. Ranoush is top notch! Our *fabulous* waitress started off by informing us of the lunch specials, which includes a 7.95 vegetarian platter (which I ordered) and a chicken schwarma sandwich (which my friend ordered). My platter really blew me away, as this was some of the finest Middle Eastern food I've had in the world. Decadently creamy hummus, perfection in a falafel ball (usually I'm not a fan of falafel as too often they are dry and pasty tasting) and babaganoush that all but had me licking the plate. Not the same Ranoush we were used to ordering from 1 year ago. We had stopped ordering takeout from here because our previous order contained basmati rice which had begun to spoil. we never complained because we get it. Sometimes not everything is perfect, whatever, no big deal. This time we ordered take out and our bill was $180 for 4 mixed grill, extra fries and vegetarian appetizer. Quality has gone down! Our salad had cucumbers and tomatoes and we asked for no lettuce but our tomatoes and cucumber were big chunks, ok no big deal. But their grilled chicken smelled and tasted like raw lamb, well pretty much barnyard. It tasted as if the kitchen prep didn't clean their hands when handling meat. We garnished it with lime and salt, but that just ruined it. We shouldn't have to doctor anything when an establishment charges this much, but fails to deliver on quality. As I type this review I still have this lingering after taste of barnyard in my mouth. Just gross! I just can't right now! I visited Ranoush on a Sunday evening with two close friends. Our original plan was to go to dinner at a BBQ place we've been dying to try...but they were closed on Sundays. So I entered Ranoush with really low expectations and disappointed about missing out on a delicious BBQ meal. We started off the meal with the appetizer, Kalaj, and two glasses of red wine. Kalaj is kind of like a Middle Eastern grilled cheese with crispy pita bread. It was delicious. The wine menu was pretty extensive and moderately priced. I was impressed. I drank several glasses of the 14 hands cabernet and loved it. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma as my meal. The chicken was seasoned really well, but was a bit dry. Although I have to admit, every time order chicken from a Mediterranean/Middle Eastern place, I always think the chicken is dry. Maybe it's the way they prepare it? We also order a pot of the mint tea. It was so satisfying that we ended up ordering a second pot. I highly recommend the mint tea (especially when it's only $2.50 a pot)! For dessert we order their specialty, an Arabic Cheesecake / Baklava dish and a piece of their regular Baklava. Both were delicious. Also, the Arabic Cheesecake / Baklava we ordered happened to be their last piece, so because it wasn't presented like it normally is, the Owner didn't charge us for it! Throughout our entire meal (we were there for almost 4 hours!), the staff was great and constantly checked in on us. Our waiter was new, but the Owner jumped in on several occasions to make sure we were happy. At the end of our meal, the new waiter brought us our check and it was incorrect. The waiter realized his mistakes on our check but it took two tries for the final check to be corrected. And the Owner apologized for the mix up and ended up pouring us another glass of wine. Even with the check mix up, I am really impressed by this restaurant's service. I plan to visit Ranoush again in the future and possibly try their hookahs. There aren't a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants to choose from in St. Louis, but Ranoush does a great job of filling that void! read more

I went here for on a date, and both I and my boyfriend thought it was fantastic! Neither of us are picky eaters, but we both are critical of the quality of food we eat. we got the mezza for two, the non-vegetarian option. Stuffed grape-leaves (warak enab) were phenomenal! They had a lot of flavor; although they feel oily, there is no adverse affect on the quality. The falafel was good, as was the baba ganoush, but my advice would be to try something different. Move away from the deep fried items, America! There's plenty of fresh, neat stuff to try; be a little adventurous. Cucumber yogurt there is really fantastic, too. Not to forget the social atmosphere of the restaurant: their outdoor seating is great. Some may criticize because people are constantly walking through--Delmar Loop, it happens--but it's great for people watching. And hookah is fun to do with your group of friends, definitely. Finally, the staff. Every time I've been to Ranoush, the staff has been cheerful and friendly. Being a server myself, I can understand how difficult it can be to keep up with your tables, especially when you have other responsibilities aside from just serving. I think they do a marvelous job. Thanks to the ISC, I finally had a chance to try this place. They have been on my list for a while but I just hadn't made it there yet. That all changed thanks to Sarah S. deciding it would be a great place for dinner. Good call... Wife and I split their vegetarian mezza platter. For some reason, I decided we needed an appetizer as well and went for the cheese stuffed dough. It was very good and shared quite well. Dinner arrived and the first thing that struck me was the amount of food they presented us. The second thing that I noticed was that their vegetarian platter was served with an aluminum foil construction on either end of the platter that made it into a goose. It was almost as though we were eating the dishes out of the body of a goose. Note: we are NOT vegetarians and had no issue with this but it might have been an issue for a staunch PETA type. For us it was merely amusing... About those mezze...hummus, baba ganoush, mutabal, tabbouleh, falfel, batata harra, and labneh. The first call-out goes to the baba. It was damn fine. Big, smoky flavor and a finely ground consistency without being a paste like some places. Next up would be the Harra - spicy potatoes cooked slightly al dente but not so much as to be considered undercooked. They were amazing but potent. Cool them off a little by dipping them in the labneh and they are perfect. Falafel were good but not outstanding. Neither of us loves tabbouleh and there were enough other things that occupied our attention that it went untouched. Moutabel was good but it really tasted like it belonged on top of a Chicago-style hot dog. Weird, huh? The thing I will crave from this experience is the batata with labneh. You wouldn't think minty fries would work, but somehow they do. My friend also had the lentil soup. She liked it and commented that it was light for a lentil soup. I had the vegetarian platter and, once again, I took a good bit of it home because the portions were so generous. My friend had the shish tawouk lunch platter and really liked it. When that Greek food craving hits, I am on a mission. I cannot think (or god forbid eat) anything unless it's Greek. Generally, I find myself stuffing my face with Saganaki & pita at Olympia Taverna, but not recently. I went out on a limb and tried Ranoush. Sure, it's not technically Greek -- it's Middle Eastern, but who cares? They offer very similar entrees and they do it with a raw finesse I am down right envious of. Their version of tzatziki changed my life. Their portion was perfect and the flavor was heavenly. If your delectable dinner wasn't enough, you can take a stroll outside and puff on one of their hookah's for a bit (they also have a strictly hookah bar down the road). I've always been curious about Ranoush and no one could tell me if they food was good so i decided to take the opportunity to find out for myself! I walked inside and there was a nice painting on the wall. I was greeted by my server and decided to go with the shawarma. I must say because of my ignorance I ordered the wrong thing. When my food came it was ground up chicken with rice and a pita. The pita was good and the rice was amazing. The ground up chicken was very flavorful but not what I wanted. Had I ordered what the waiter told me to, I have a feeling that my food would have been amazing. I do very much love Ranoush. It's family-owned and one of the brothers works almost every night. Now, prior to January 3rd, you could smoke hookah here after your meal, just like in the Middle East, but thanks to fascist Missouri smoking laws, no longer (I say this as a non-smoker - I do not now, and never have, smoked cigarettes, but here's an example of an unintended consequence.) Those of you who want that experience will have a different one at Ranoush Nights, a couple blocks down, next to the Pageant. (See my Ranoush Nights review). You're going to find authentic Middle Eastern cuisine, a light decor, and a crowd that varies from the casual passer-by, to the hipster, to the Middle Easterner. After being yelled out by what I assumed is the manager/bartender, we found out, whomever took our reservations wrote it on the wrong date (they wrote for the week before although I called the week of my reservations). Happened on Ranoush by accident when I was in the Loop at lunchtime. It was a nice little place that did a good job satisfying the lunchtime hunger. The smallish space is completely filled with middle eastern decorations, almost to the point of kitsch - but enjoyable. The hookah room made me think of an opium den. I did enjoy the arabesque music that played throughout. Our server was pleasant, and did a good job attending to our needs. I liked how there were 5 or 6 lunch specials listed, all for $7.95 I believe. They were all variations on dinner entrees. Portions were generous for the price. My chicken shawarma (think gyro) was well prepared - plentiful chicken that was nicely seasoned and tender, with a good mix of vegetable toppings and sauces available. The wife's Vegetarian Platter was a very nice surprise. I can't remember all that was on it - d'oh - but there were five different items, all generous, with good flavor and spices. Maybe a little garlicy for my tastes, but that's just a preference. I have to shout out the mint tea. Hit the spot with a strong, but not too strong, mint and a smooth not bitter tea flavor. Served very hot with loose leaves in a double walled copper kettle. Kudos. I almost forgot! Finished off the meal with a baklava for dessert. For $4, a decent-sized double triangle of the tastiness. It was tender it had fluffy yummy rice, side salad was lightly sprinkled with salad dressing. And of course the garlic side spread. I really wanted to go there again today. I stopped in for a (very) late lunch after checking into my hotel. I love schwarma but it's not widely available in Nashville where I'm from. I used to eat them all the time in college when I lived in Michigan. The meal was excellent quality- very fresh. The restaurant was clean and service was friendly. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is the dinner menu price- I'd assume the lunch menu is more affordable- schwarma and side salad was $16.99 plus tip. Would normally order apps too so could get a little pricey. On that note though, there was a TON of chicken, so had I not been visiting, leftovers could have be tomorrow's lunch too.
