Over the past couple of years, I've had all manner of cakes, pastries and pies from Blackbird. In…read morefact, it's almost a given that when I encounter a tasty pie or pastry at a friend's house on Bainbridge, when I ask, it's almost a given that it came from Blackbird. They're expensive, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" definitely applies to Blackbird. You may pay more than you might somewhere else, but their quality is exceptional. Today I stopped by for one of their quiches--their spinach and goat cheese--and a lemon blueberry scone. Both were super yummy. I often get one of their chais too, which are also quite tasty (and not at all dry, a common problem with scones). Having Blackbird downtown makes it quite convenient to just stop by while on the way to elsewhere. But sometimes it can be a destination if...you can find seating, which is at a premium most of the day.

After being a BI resident and then moving away I was so excited to make time to stop by Blackbird…read more I had told several friends on the island that I was looking forward to stopping by the bakery and I was surprised to find they had lost their love for it. I figured it was due to taking it for granted... ...I was mistaken. Day one of our trip we ordered several items and none of them were very good at all. We ended up giving items away and thought maybe the bakery was just having an off day. The staff seemed bothered by having to take our order but hey- we all have tough days! Well...day two of our trip we decide to prioritize stopping by again. After a local saw us waiting 30 minutes for our toast and jam she told us to go ask and that "sometimes the staff can get really overwhelmed ". So my daughter stood in line a second time and was told that the employee heard we wanted it to go so it had been sitting at the end of the counter the whole time. We specified we wanted to eat it inside. We asked kindly if they could fix the mistake and we were happy to wait. To my genuine surprise the employee with the pink hair opened the bag of toast, plopped our three orders on trays along with the plastic to go tiny jams and dropped them on our table with the most dismissive uncaring attitude I've seen. You could get more care at a convenient store. We thought we'd try to eat them anyway and the pieces were cold and hard. I asked her about them and her response was "well you asked for to go". Not only does she seem incapable of doing her job basics but as an employer I'm shocked she is granted the simple tasks of serving toast in the first place. She made sure to put plenty of energy into gossiping with her co worker about her irritation with us. We have strong ties on the island still and come back often but we will gladly skip the visit here in the future. I certainly hope these staff members get some basic skills in customer service for their own future.

You can only get regular brewed coffee here; their pastries are the highlight. I have had their pear danish (superb and light) and orange almond cake without gluten (delicious). Scones, muffins, cookies, and canele are also laid out. In terms of bread, their bakery delivers from Port Townsend. Some of the boules and loaves do look hefty. I have bought the "ficelle" a light bread with a satisfying crust in the shape of a baguette. It works as a side bread for an Italian meal or with soups perfectly. The shop is a delightful nook for specialty gifts and treats. It does seem to display an "old world" ambience because of the low-slung roof and architecture. However, the workers are not wearing ironed bakery smocks. They are wearing dodgy street clothes which can touch the items and that's not very "old world Euro" now is it.

The bakery is so quaint and cute. The lemon pound cake was literally the beast I've ever had. And Selene is probably the nicest person on planet earth. What a vibe. Saturday rides it is from now on.

The greatest hidden gem on Bainbridge Island, Jake's is an absolute DELIGHT and a local FAVE…read more Here's the scoop - it's in the GAS STATION off of High School Rd (take a LEFT at the second light once you get off the ferry) and drive right into the gas station. Fill up gas n RUN inside to find Jake's walk-up window to order. His SCONENUTS are a MUST - do not walk out without taking home at least a half-dozen box. All of his baked goods are FIRE but the sconenuts are his signature specialty, so don't leave without giving them a try!!! IF you're lucky, catch a bite when the hot side (grill) is open as EVERYTHING is magical - but my hubby swears by Jake's breakfast pesto aioli sammy. Hubs was so addicted that he would swing by EVERY SATURDAY MORNING AFTER BASKETBALL to indulge in this sammy masterpiece. It became his beloved Saturday ritual! If you're lucky you'll get a chance to meet Jake or his wife as they're usually on property - always approachable and ready to chat, you won't find a more lovely couple! They truly represent that small-town, island vibe and you'll leave feeling like you're not a stranger, but definitely a "friend". IF you missed them and they're closed for the day, they have all their goodies packaged and stocked in the grab-n-go fridge next to the cash register. But be warned - inventory is limited as Jakes' place is a primo spot for the best yummies! Ruuuunnnn to Jakes! (And tell him MALIA sent ya!)

Everything we ordered was packed with flavor and well executed in this fusion restaurant. The spicy truffle wontons with grilled shrimp were a standout! They were super aromatic with the truffle flavor coming through, and the shrimp added a nice extra layer of texture and richness. The wontons were not quite spicy, however. We also tried thier chili prawn noodles, which had egg noodles and was just as good. The tempura shrimp was also crunchy and added to the great mix of textures. We also had the rockfish, which was in a nice creamy sauce and cooked nicely, complementing the rest of the meal well.

Truffle chili wontons - skin was too thick for my preference and not a lot of filling. They were like mini wontons. The sauce was interesting though, the combination of truffle and chili oil was something that I had enjoyed. I wish I saved the sauce for some other dishes Chili oil noodle with prawn - noodles needed more sauce!! They were a bit dry and I could not really taste the chili oil. Needs more flavor for sure Duck leg confit - this dish tasted so Vietnamese to me? The sauce they put on the duck was reminiscent of something my mom would make. I enjoyed this dish the most. I really liked the way that the sauce from the duck mixed with the rice. Vietnamese coffee creme brulee - coffee flavor was so strong I did not know that the menu changes, so there were some items I saw people get months ago that I was excited to get but they did not have. Maybe will catch some different items in the future

I thought the items we grabbed were excessively sweet. Keeping an open mind that they offer a larger variety of pastries and goods I didn't try but my visit felt just average. While not overly impressed, I can appreciate a solid spot with fresh donuts and pastries managing high traffic. Line tends to be long but moves at a moderate speed, as the employees are open to chatting. Large Butterhorn - excessively sweet to a point where I felt sick of sugar because it's also pretty big. I personally would rather eat a fluffy donut because this felt more like a condensed block of sugar, but seems to be a favorite for others. Might just not be for me. Swedish Almond Pastry - while this was also super sweet, the almond flavor was able to pop out at times. Sliced almonds on top helped sprinkle some extra flavor but were ultimately consumed by the sweetness. A little flakier in texture which helped dissociate with the dense sugar block.
