Blackbird Bakery is the only bakery that popped up in my search results when I was doing research on where to grab pastries for breakfast during my visit to Bainbridge Island. It's clear this was the case for others as well, as there was a large line extending outside the door onto the sidewalk when we arrived around 10:00 a.m. I ordered their multigrain toast with jam along with a savory croissant. The toast comes heavily buttered and the savory croissant for the day was topped with the fillings you'd fine in a spanakopita -- i.e. spinach and feta. I really loved the thickness of the toast slice and the degree that they toasted it: soft and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. They did not hold back from including a bunch of seeds in the bread, and that added a nice texture in every bite. The jam is on the sweeter side, but I like that it's on the side so you can control exactly how much sweetness you want to add. The savory croissant had good flakiness to it, but it would have been nice if we had an option to have it toasted. Overall, very good bakery that I'd gladly visit again if I'm back on Bainbridge Island. Definitely get the toast. read more

Over the past couple of years, I've had all manner of cakes, pastries and pies from Blackbird. In fact, it's almost a given that when I encounter a tasty pie or pastry at a friend's house on Bainbridge, when I ask, it's almost a given that it came from Blackbird. They're expensive, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" definitely applies to Blackbird. You may pay more than you might somewhere else, but their quality is exceptional. Today I stopped by for one of their quiches--their spinach and goat cheese--and a lemon blueberry scone. Both were super yummy. I often get one of their chais too, which are also quite tasty (and not at all dry, a common problem with scones). Having Blackbird downtown makes it quite convenient to just stop by while on the way to elsewhere. But sometimes it can be a destination if...you can find seating, which is at a premium most of the day. read more

I'd come back here for the salted caramel apple fritter itself; a pull apart pastry with a good balance of not being overwhelmingly sweet. Otherwise I'm struggling to see the most positives here. Scones dominated most of the morning display case; most of which looked dry. The onion and cheddar scone was ok enough for being a savory option, but pass on the peaches and cream one. Service was quick to keep up with the line. There's some group tables inside the small bakery, otherwise nothing wrong with taking it outside with more public tables. read more

I really like the freshly baked wheat loaf, the chocolate mousse, and their soups. I especially enjoyed the spicy peanut stew earlier this year. The quiche, with its beautifully smooth custard and well-seasoned spinach, is excellent. The cakes are beautiful, I love admiring them. So happy I chose this bakery for my first visit to the island because it was everything I thought it would be, comfy, small window into the idyllic island slice of life, and their thick slice toast WAS indeed delightfully delicious and I got to enjoy it at their cute bay window spot looking out on a perfectly sunny day. With a cup of refreshing iced latte. That was actually good espresso and well made. I love fishing and they had the cutest, most intricate trout sugar cookies that day. Yes I attempted to bring it back in one piece and it kinda survived. I really wished I got one of their store memorabilia shirts or something! A few things to keep in mind - there can be a line but all staff work hard to keep things moving. Came here to pass some time while waiting for the ferry. My partner wanted me to try their toast and jam which was indeed tasty and filling. The rest of their baked goods didn't seem as golden or flaky as pastry shops I normally like to visit (it was more American style than European). Their potato and kale soup looked and smelled delicious, and was $7 for a solid bowlful. Their half price pecan pie was $21, which is alright but it does mean that full price, they sell a relatively ordinary looking pie for $42 which seems quite hefty before tax. They only have 5 tables; two are full booths and one is half a booth and half chairs. Two of their tables have chairs that seat 4 each. There's a bit of counter eating space. We took the ferry today to see Bainbridge. We walked to see the Troll "Pia the Peacemaker" then walked back into town and found Blackbird Bakery. I ordered my usual oat milk latte with 4 shots. And we ordered an oatmeal cookie and a slice of vegan chocolate applesauce cake. I wanted to purchase a loaf of their oatmeal whole wheat bread, but the person ahead of me bought the last loaf! One of the lovely things about this place is their art collection of watercolors by an artist who studies birds. They were fantastic. We try to find vegan options... the oatmeal was not vegan but usually it is pretty healthy. This cookie had a lot of sugar taste... too sweet for us. The chocolate cake was moist and just sweet enough! Not my favorite latte but I think it was just not my favorite expresso taste (this is subject to personal preference). There is a smoothness I've come to enjoy and so I look for it when traveling as compared to my local coffee shop in South Carolina. read more

There are a few large booths inside that are comfortable to sit at to enjoy their pastries and coffee. It looked like there were seats outside, too. They provide ice cold water on the side that customers can serve themselves. The staff is very friendly, stopping to provide help when asked. They have pretty handmade macraweave wall hangings for sale that double as decor. I got the apricot scone, cherry mezzeluna, triple chocolate super chunk, and pride rainbow cookie to share with the kids. After being a BI resident and then moving away I was so excited to make time to stop by Blackbird. I had told several friends on the island that I was looking forward to stopping by the bakery and I was surprised to find they had lost their love for it. I figured it was due to taking it for granted... ...I was mistaken. Day one of our trip we ordered several items and none of them were very good at all. We ended up giving items away and thought maybe the bakery was just having an off day. The staff seemed bothered by having to take our order but hey- we all have tough days! Well...day two of our trip we decide to prioritize stopping by again. After a local saw us waiting 30 minutes for our toast and jam she told us to go ask and that "sometimes the staff can get really overwhelmed ". So my daughter stood in line a second time and was told that the employee heard we wanted it to go so it had been sitting at the end of the counter the whole time. We specified we wanted to eat it inside. We asked kindly if they could fix the mistake and we were happy to wait. To my genuine surprise the employee with the pink hair opened the bag of toast, plopped our three orders on trays along with the plastic to go tiny jams and dropped them on our table with the most dismissive uncaring attitude I've seen. You could get more care at a convenient store. We thought we'd try to eat them anyway and the pieces were cold and hard. I asked her about them and her response was "well you asked for to go". Not only does she seem incapable of doing her job basics but as an employer I'm shocked she is granted the simple tasks of serving toast in the first place. She made sure to put plenty of energy into gossiping with her co worker about her irritation with us. We have strong ties on the island still and come back often but we will gladly skip the visit here in the future. I certainly hope these staff members get some basic skills in customer service for their own future. read more

I found this cute bakery in the downtown area of Bainbridge Island. The sweet aroma of pastries fills your nose as you walk in and the people working there are so warm and friendly. I immediately eyed the giant cinnamon roll ($6) the size of my head and knew I wanted it immediately. I took my first bite and it was unfortunately super dry. I typically like a moist cinnamon roll with the delicious cinnamon filling inside, but this was not it. The bread was just dry with a hint of cinnamon flavor. The icing saved the dish in my opinion. The sweet delicious flavors were just perfect. My boyfriend ordered a banana walnut slice ($5.10), which was super delicious and the perfect amount of sweetness, and a 8oz ginger chai latte ($5.05), which he thoroughly enjoyed. They have plenty of other delicious baked goods in this place, but I would recommend skipping the cinnamon roll. read more

Used to be my favorite bakery not just on the island, but of all time! Wow, has the service gone completely downhill and makes the charm it once had unrecognizable. I ordered 3 toasts for breakfast, waited 25 minutes and my name was never called. Went up to the register and they told me they did it for to go and it had been sitting out the entire time. No idea why they did that but ok...I asked for it to be for here and the girl with the pink hair had the most terrible attitude I've ever experienced. She legit just plopped the cold toasts on a plate, gave us the smallest amount of jam and when I said thank you, she didn't even acknowledge us. The toast was cold, she gave us the heels of the bread as well. We went up and asked if she just threw the cold ones on a plate and she said "well yes, you ordered it to go" and when we said "no we didn't, it would have been nice to have the fresh ones we paid for" she again completely ignored us. Seconds later, starts gossiping about it with a male coworker. Not only unprofessional but just does not embody what this place represents. Seriously I LOVE this place. But her attitude, service, and paying for cold toasts without a single apology or trying to make fresh ones...I don't think I can come back here and feel the same magic or recommend it to others. Awful customer service from an employee named Nita. I've been a regular at this coffee shop for a long time and have always enjoyed coming here, which is why this experience was disappointing. During my recent visit, my boyfriend went to the counter to ask about his drink, and the employee assisting him (Nita) told him that I am "really rude" and that I'm "not welcome back." This was confusing and upsetting, especially since I've always tried to be polite to staff and have never had an issue here before. Being spoken about negatively to another customer especially in a way that suggests I'm not welcome is unprofessional and doesn't reflect the kind of environment I've come to expect from this shop. I'm hoping management can address this, as I would like to continue supporting this business, but this experience definitely changed how I feel about coming back. read more

We saw this cute bakery on a recent weekend, daytrip to Bainbridge, and we had to drop-in (as we love a good pastry). Unfortunately, by the time of our visit around 1:00pm, the selection was very limited - and staff seemed "over it." We tried to be understanding, as the lines were long - and we assumed they had been all day. Still, it made the experience less enjoyable - especially after waiting in the before mentioned long line. We hurried to order a slice of chocolate cake and a slice of pie. When we ate them later, both were pretty tasty - especially the crust on the pie - which was special. I think this is a spot I would have loved under different circumstances - less people, more selection, friendlier staff, and available seating. Maybe we'll try to visit during the week - versus the weekend - next time.
