Ambiance is nice and quiet but limited seating Forsure. Service was good, fast, and friendly all you can ask for. I think one of my girlfriend's favorite sandwiches is Oxalis Kitchen's smashed egg sandwich. And it is, truly, a tasty sandwich. We generally make sure to stop by whenever we're in Poulsbo or just passing through. Seating is at a premium, with only 3 small, indoor tables, and about 6 seats at the bar. When the weather is good, there are 3 small tables outside. During rush times, all seats can fill. Parking can also be problematic, which can be frustrating. There just aren't that many spots. Service is generally good, and the staff attentive. Online orders through their website almost never work well, however. Two times in a row we showed up at the designated time, only to find that out order had not been made, and we had to spend valuable time clarifying or just plain telling them that we had an order (which we had paid for). read more

Come here for some non-standard flavors and home-made caliber plates. You'll find salads, sandwiches with breads baked onsite, and bakery items like scones and cookies. The shop gives "aspiring to be a bistro". It is a slightly too-cosy space -- with about three small tables and a five-seater bar facing the back kitchen. If you're claustrophobic and want a calm interior this might not be the spot for you -- there are people in line to place orders or waiting for their food directly where you are eating. On the plus side this kitchen serves up unusual combinations of flavors which is intriguing. It's a welcome change from the dull, standard-issue sandwiches served at area coffee shops. There are salads with inventive dressings that use fruit and herbs like a "mango vinaigrette". Some items are offered for sale in a cooler including their take home salad dressings *$8. The drinks available here are also unique in that they offer unusual sodas and beverage cans. There are some unusually-sourced condiments, sauces and canned fish/canned oil on a sale shelf. I like this breath of fresh air to experience inventive sandwiches such as the apple slaw/parmesan/bacon on apple thyme focaccia I recently had. It was so deliciously put together that I was well pleased. On the other hand, my dining companion did not finish their lentil soup -- it was far too thick, more like a pate than a liquid soup, and we came for lunch at 11:30 a.m., not late in the day. Previously one of their special items, advertised on a chalk board menu behind the payment counter, required substitution of a key ingredient in a salad (e.g. strawberry) with another (e.g. orange). Not what I expected but again this is not a standard restaurant, but an inventive kitchen where food is made with good conscience and intention. I patronize them to support creative local businesses and feed my taste buds something slightly elevated. The parking outside is narrow and limited be aware. This is not their fault rather, non-existent city planning that sets up these terrible turnoffs into parking lots from busy pseudo-highways. All too common in Kitsap County, however this shop is "uncommon". read more

I saw a social media post from somewhere sometime ago and finally made the trip recently. It's a great lil cafe with super neat and thoughtful decor & finishing touches. I dig the art and the paint contrast for starters... oh, is that a cute little retail shelf? Sweet. I had a handful of questions for their vegan options in the nice menu and the staff was super welcoming and friendly taking each one in stride. The haul ended up being a combination of sweet & savory: I think 1-2 cookies and 2 foodstuffs (1 of the toasts I forget the name and the tofu rice bowl). Just good wholesome bites. I think I add a really swell decaf oat latte with some kind of flavoring, as well, but the memory slips me head. Everything here, and I mean EVERYTHING, is crafted with love and artistry. There is an ample selection for the gluten free and vegan folks, as well as options for wheat eaters and meat eaters alike. The house made salad dressing in the grab and go case is tasty and in bottles to be returned when it's empty. I had some time to kill so I stopped here for a breakfast sandwich and a latte and was blown away by this unassuming little bakery. I should have known that it was going to be good, because it was a Wed morning and fairly busy, despite it being in an area that doesn't get a ton of foot traffic. That means people are going out of their way to come here I would assume. It seemed to be a lot of locals, hanging out over coffee or breakfast. The interior is very cute! Small, bright colors, has a counter like an old fashioned diner plus a few tables on both the inside and out in front of the building. They have bakery items in the case, as well as breakfast options on their paper menu. The girls that worked there were very sweet and accommodating since I didn't notice the menus on a shelf on the wall and so had to make up my mind once I got to the register and then kept adding items. Luckily no one was behind me! I ended up going with a turmeric latte, a breakfast sandwich, an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, and a loaf of bread to take home. I sat outside and she brought every thing out to me. The turmeric latte was delicious! I don't usually get sweet drinks or flavored lattes but this was creamy and a little spicy but balanced with the espresso...so good! I ate the cookie while waiting for my sandwich and it was perfectly chewy, and I think surprisingly vegan. Very enjoyable. The sandwich was nothing short of delicious! Their homemade sourdough bread was perfectly grilled, with a runny egg, arugula, and I believe bacon jam. The perfect combo of sweet and savory. Initially I thought that the price was a little steep, but after eating it, every ingredient was so full of flavor and quantity, I can honestly say that it was worth the price. Lastly, the bread that I brought home. Not only was it beautiful to look at, it was so yummy! I'm not that big of a fan of sourdough to be honest, but toasted with butter on it, I could eat the whole loaf! It was soft on the inside with a nice crispy crust and kept well in just a paper bag for at least 3 days after I bought it. I will definitely be coming back here! read more

The focaccia is so overcrowded by crap and it looks like a pizza. Only half the people that run the booth at the farmers market have any personality at all. I don't normally like bananas but I had a little bit of the ones that came with my meal and they were good as well. The ambiance is great! It's a little small but it's pretty open and bright. Previously I had given Oxalis a 5-star rating and considered it a Poulsbo hidden gem. I have dropped one star due to the consistent attitude I have been getting lately when I come in as a patron. Firstly, the young staff has a tendency to ignore you when you walk in and then seemingly purposefully make you wait much longer than necessary - I will give them a hall pass for that, but it is annoying. However when I then proceeded to order coffee and get immediate attitude. "What kind of coffee exactly" and then staff member proceeds to list a variety of espresso-based drinks. House coffee genius! If I wanted an espresso, cortado, cappuccino, latte, etc. I would have been specific...coffee generally means coffee without additional details provided. More than anything though, don't give paying customers attitude especially when they are being polite and patient. I still think that Oxalis has a fairly creative menu, but I am starting to get a bit turned off for the aforementioned reasons. I know that good customer service is a dying art, however I would call on the owner to coach your staff on truly embracing this skill. It makes as much of a difference as the menu and quality of the food. read more

Fantastic! Just what Poulsbo needed. Atmosphere was super cute and all the food we tried was amazing. We had the smoked salmon tartine with was a delight of fresh salmon, pickled beets & onions, capers and wonderfully fresh and chewy sourdough bread. We also tried the ham and cheese pastry was rich and insanely buttery in the best kind of way, and the brownie was dense/fudgy with the most divine butterscotch caramel topping and just a hint of salt. They also have a large selection of Gluten Free and Vegan pastries which we are always look for when we have our celiac family in town. Can't wait to go back and try more items! read more
