Our friend took us to Poulsbo for the day and said that we must stop in here for some desserts to take home. It feels like an old fashion bakery when you step through the door and smells divine. The bakery items were good and very flavorful however they do pull a little bait and switch on some of the items. My suggestion is to pick your items like you would a steak at market, point at the one you want and say "I want that one". We got a few different pastries however as you can see from the photos the apple fritter we got in the bag was barely as big as the logo on the bag. The fritter on display in the case was huge, that was the same with pretty much all the other pastries except maybe the pecan roll. We did find it weird that they were pulling items from shelves behind the cases and not from the cases themselves. The line was long but it moved fast, that has to be blamed on all the tourist asking questions, being indecisive and those trying to make conversation with everyone around them. You know the kind. This may have been a true to online photo bakery at one point but now it's being run on tourist profit and they seem to be cutting corners to make as much money as possible during tourist season. It would be interesting to see how it's run in the off season but we probably won't be back. read more

A popular bakery that's highly recommended during any Poulsbo trip. Even people in other buildings around town recommended this spot. I thought the items we grabbed were excessively sweet. Keeping an open mind that they offer a larger variety of pastries and goods I didn't try but my visit felt just average. While not overly impressed, I can appreciate a solid spot with fresh donuts and pastries managing high traffic. Line tends to be long but moves at a moderate speed, as the employees are open to chatting. Large Butterhorn - excessively sweet to a point where I felt sick of sugar because it's also pretty big. I personally would rather eat a fluffy donut because this felt more like a condensed block of sugar, but seems to be a favorite for others. Might just not be for me. Swedish Almond Pastry - while this was also super sweet, the almond flavor was able to pop out at times. Sliced almonds on top helped sprinkle some extra flavor but were ultimately consumed by the sweetness. A little flakier in texture which helped dissociate with the dense sugar block. read more

Lots of choices. I normally do not eat a lot of sweets but I want to try this popular place in Poulsbo because of great reviews. It is a family owned, historic bakery known for handmade breads, donuts, pastries and the Viking cup. I picked up a number of treats and have been delighted with them all. My favorite is the pecan roll (love the crunch) and hubby's is the Viking cup. The staff were helpful and friendly. I've been here a few times while visiting family in Silverdale. It's about a 20-minute drive, though you can take the ferry from Seattle and make it a day trip. The bakery is located in the heart of Poulsbo, a charming Scandinavian-style town. There's usually a line, but we've been lucky during our visits and haven't had to wait too long. One of the things that immediately tell you a bakery is legit, is when you buy way too many donuts (really not a thing) and its still fresh day 2 and day 3. Fine it was a lot of donuts but you cannot blame me. These guys are kings when it comes to making the perfect donuts. Cinnamon sugar is a must for me and it is gloriously cinnamony not a dash, or a hint, nope, she makes herself known. I'm also a sucker for a sugar donut so obviously I had to have that then add a few donuts wholes a coconut crunch and a few cookies and you'll be so happy you stopped by. This small bakery right in downtown Poulsbo is definitely a new favorite of mine. We arrived pretty early in the morning which was a good call because by mid-day there was a line running out onto the sidewalk with people waiting to order their baked goods. The staff was very patient with us as we decided from the plethora of pastries and cakes they have to offer. I ended up trying one of the giant donuts and my girlfriend got a viking bowl which resembled a cinnamon roll in a cup shape filled with icing. Both items were delicious and very very sweet which I quite enjoyed. The price for each item seemed fair for the size and quality of the pastries that we had tried. Stopped by midday, wasn't much of a line, so we were able to take a look and decide our game plan. We wanted a lot of items, but we decided to get the Maple Doughboy, Custard Filled, Apple Fritter and the Swedish Almond Pastry. All were so good, fresh, and perfect softness and nice outside texture. Didn't taste like generic donuts from the grocery store and not overly sweet. Staff was very efficient, helpful and quick to bag it up and get you all rung up. Prices were good so you can buy a bunch of items. I will never understand the cult-like local love for this place. I've been to Sluys several times now and have never found their treats to be any better than the donuts I'd pick up from Safeway up the road. In fact, I think we enjoy grocery store donuts far more than Sluys. It's always totally crowded with a line down the block, with unfriendly staff who just seem overwhelmed by the perpetual mountain of people circling through. I feel like they allow too many people inside--always rushed and quite stressful to be shoulder-to-shoulder with others while trying to make a selection. I've given Sluys a few chances and have yet to discover the reason for the obsession, so I would not recommend to others. read more

Stopped in mid-afternoon on a Tuesday. There was almost no line, which I think is fairly rare for Sluys. They have so many tasty looking pastries that lure you in from the front window. We got a big assortment - a viking cup without cream cheese, an almond pastry, a date-filled bear claw, a troll house cookie, a pepparkakor, and a krispie.
