Connecticut has some of my favorite hotdog joints. This is one of my favs. No frills just great dogs the old school way

Hot dog with the works or Chili dog depending on my mood of the day, fries and a large coke(fountain). Rawley's is a grease food spot that makes the stipulation that it "is not fast food" so depending on the line be prepared to wait a few. Nothing crazy but if you're in a rush, phone in your order. Hot Chihauhau dog if you're looking for some spice and burgers hit the spot if you're hot dogged out. Burgers are single pattie and relatively small so if you're hungry, double it up. Shakes are def worth trying(blk & white is delish). Get a booth and carve you're name into the wall with the 1,000s of other past patrons. read more

Happened to pop in here for lunch one random day. It's tough to describe. I mean, you walk in and it's dark and (as other reviewers has stated) the walls and booths are all covered with the hundreds of thousands of names and initials from past customers. But I think that's also the charm of this place. It doesn't try to be anything more than it is. A hot dog stand for the local neighborhood. I ordered the Mexican Dog, a chili & cheese dog and the "works". All three dogs were served on a paper plate (again it's a hot dog stand with seating) and all three had a nice snap when you bit in. The mexican dog had mustard, hellish relish, and a few other condiments. Chili & cheese dog is what it is although I was surprised to see a slice of cheese versus cheese whiz. The works had bacon, saurkraut, relish and mustard. All 3 were very tasty and I would definitely stop in again when I'm in the area. Now I say it's "just a hot dog stand" but I don't think that's a bad thing in this case. They do what they do and what they do, they do very well. read more

One of my favorite food joints of all time. I've gone here since I was just a tot, and although management has changed over the years it is still the same. My name is still carved into an old wooden booth, the dog with the works hasn't changed ingredients in the 20 years I've been going, and the occasional grilled cheese I get for old times sake is full of deliciousness and packed with memories. Hands down the BEST burger I've eaten in Fairfield county and possibly ever. If you're looking for a delicious tasting, excellent structured and proportioned burger, look no further. Each time I come home to CT I make a point to stop here for a bacon cheeseburger. Bacon is chopped up fine and perfect for biting into, bun is soft, burger is cooked perfectly. There's no tutti fruity names like The Californian or The West Virginian found here. You'll only find those concoctions at that other hot dog place on the other side of town. What they have are very good plump grilled hot dogs, french fries, and soda. Sure, they have other things on their menu like hamburgers and philly cheese steak, but Rawley's is quite famous for their hot dogs. So get the hot dogs. Rawley's has been around forever - my dad used to go there when he went to Fairfield Prep! Their black and white milkshakes are amazing and I generally choose a cheese dog with bacon and fries. It's dangerous when I have Groupons because I want to go there everyday! Love that you can carve your initials into the wall. I've been going there for 20 years now and it's always fun to look at everyone's old inscriptions when you are eating in the back. read more

Best Hot Dogs I have ever had. Definitely worth stopping although it does not look like much from the outside.

For a real old school roadside hot dog experience make sure you take a trip to Rawleys, get one of their loaded dogs (every topping is fresh) and get a plain one just for comparison sake, some fries, of course. But you can order your dog any way you like, and you can sit at the counter or in their adorable seating area, but the main thing....the most important thing to remember....is ORDER A BLACK AND WHITE MILKSHAKE. It might have been the best I ever had. Or it might just be that the hot dog milk shake combo is the greatest combo ever. Either way, you want to make sure you get both. read more

Well I heard that someone bought Rawleys recently so I decided to give it another shot. The new owners have cleaned up the kitchen area and the counter. It's much more presentable but still retains its local charm. I got two dogs with sauerkraut and a small fry. Prices have crept up a bit high but it is Fairfield and everything seems to be more expensive nowadays anyway. I was a little perplexed that sauerkraut was a dollar upcharge per hotdog. I know how much sauerkraut costs seems like somewhat of an exploitation. Anyway the hotdogs were very good, I think they're using Hummel Brothers now which is one of my favorites. They were cooked perfectly and served on a grilled bun. Everything was hot and fresh although I believe they use butter on the buns which is it not favorite for hot dogs. They are still making their own french fries which are better than they were but still nowhere as near as good as the original crinkle that fries I enjoyed in my youth. They were somewhat dry in texture and not light and fluffy inside. Maybe one day they will get it right but I wish they would switch back to the premade crinkle cuts but that's just my opinion. Overall it's nice to see Rawleys is better under new management, hopefully they will get their french fry game down. read more

I have never had a better hot dog than the ones I've had at Rawley's. The milk shakes are phenomenal, and so are the fries. The ambience is exceptional in a weird kind of way. My name is one of the many carved into the walls. It's a truly classic roadside hot dog stand. read more

Hot dogs were good but not to the extent that everyone rants about. I ordered a hotdog with the works, Chili cheese hotdog and Onion rings. I must say it was all okay, the chili tasted like it had way too much paprika and it was sloppy. The service on the other hand was very poor! I misunderstood what the man taking my order "who I believe was the owner" was explaining to me and Instead of him clarifying his question he looks over at one of his associates to get her response. He did this several times while I was trying to understand what he was saying about a groupon voucher I had. Needless to say once my groupon tickets have been used up I will not return due to the lack of customer service he provided. I'll stick to Swanky Franks and Super Duper Weenie! read more

Rustic hot dog spot just down the road from Downtown Fairfield. I had a hot dog, which is what they're known for, and it was ok. I've had better (Nathan's). They deep-fry the hot dog before it goes on the bun. It was the first time I had a hot dog cooked that way. I'd go back only if I was a minute or two away from it. read more

This fast food joint has been around for some time and has worn walls and decor to prove it. The good is basic, hot dogs, burgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries, etc. It is filling and satisfying. But is it anything more than that ? I don`t really think so. Worth a stop if you are nearby, but by no means a destination, regardless of any hype out there. read more

Best hot dogs in Southern CT. I love the real and crispy bacon pieces (rather not say bacon bits...I think that gives the wrong idea). Also the hand cut fries are better than anything you will get elsewhere. read more

Back in the day, this was my favorite place. I grew up on these hot dogs. I have such fond memories of going there with my dad for lunch. This place really fell off when they sold it 10+ years ago. I suppose it's still good, after all, Martha Stewart likes it, but it's just not the same. read more

hotdogs with the works were great. Chili cheese dog was not fries and onion rings were gross. Blk and white shakes were ok. Hadn't been there in 10 yrs+, live on other coast. But not nearly the same as when I grew up back there. sadly, they are off the list of must have food when we visit. After seeing this place on the food network, I was dying to try this place out. I ordered the "works" and thought it was pretty good. I loved the atmosphere it had and a great little place to go to..., Fries were ehhhh and the service sucked....seemed like the server was pissed at us for ordering 2 dogs n a small fry. read more

Great dog and great burger. This is a greasy spoon that is rough around the edges. Don't expect a hug and fuzzy feelings when you walk in. What it lacks in that department it makes up for it in good food and atmosphere. Check it out. read more

Not quite the local hot dog king -- that crown belongs to Super Duper Weenie -- but an iconic place nonetheless. You can't ever go wrong with their mustard/relish/kraut/bacon dog. read more

Very disappointing low quality hot dogs (NOT beef dogs) French fries were good, chili wasn't anything special. Staff were friendly! Just quality of the hot dogs weren't good at all. I might give them another chance and try the burgers! read more

Not a meaty dog, but between the toppings, flavor, service, & ambiance, I'll give it 5 stars. It's a must stop when in Fairfield. I get, "The Works" every time I make the trip. read more

I went back to Rawleys ( 14 Nov) as I do whenever I manage a trip from the UK to Fairfield. We used to go to Rawleys when I was a child. I was very disappointed in the quality of the hotdog, the size of the bun and hotdog as well as the 'works'. The woman behind the counter was not welcoming at all and some of the historical info was missing as had planned on photographing it. I had asked my daughter to go have the Rawleys experience when she was in Fairfield a few days earlier and she thought that there was nothing special about her hotdog. So disappointed. read more

I was in high school at Roger Ludlowe over 30 years ago. When I lived there in Greenfield Hill, Rawleys had the best dogs ever. Crumbled bacon under the dog, amazing. Hope it would not change but don't know. Anyone from that era still there? read more

My wife said that Rawley's has the best hot dogs. I tried one with the works and I totally agree with her. It was actually the best hotdog I ever had. It is a must try for hot dog lovers. Place is a dive which to me adds to the character. read more

The dogs are good and my fav is the one with the hot relish. The place is run down and there is not much seating, so don't expect much in the way of convenience and ambiance. Still, despite the flaws, top 3 hamburger/hot dog joint in CT. read more

My parents introduced me to Rawleys when I was a little kid and I have continued to go there since . Have to have the hotdogs -- they are awesome along with the home made fries -- to die for --- and the milkshakes!!!! What a meal! Hamburgers are great too on the grilled buns. When my friends are in town that grew up in Fairfield, we make sure we go there for lunch -- it is a tradition and they always say they love the place.... . Last time I was there I tried the Mel's hot relish -- great stuff -- give it a try --- trust me, you won't be disappointed! read more
