Deceptive and dishonest. I went in for a smog check. They told me my vehicle failed the smog check because the ignition timing was wrong and that the NO measurement numbers were too high. So I authorized the repairs. When I looked at the smog check report later the NO measurement was very high but the numbers were within the allowable limit. My vehicle would have passed the smog check with a simple timing adjustment. Instead they charged me $376 for an unnecessary diagnosis, part, and labor. If you need a certificate, DON'T go there! They're very RUDE over the phone and very expensive. They will also try to find any little thing wrong and fail you. This is what I don't get! If you won't let them repair it, you will still have to pay the full price ($168), and once you get the problem fixed some where else, you will still have to pay again, but only half the price this time ($84) for the certificate. They charge you twice! I called different places and Pon's auto did it for $90. If I would of failed, I would have to get the problem fixed, but I wouldn't have to pay again. When I called and told them my problem, they were very courteous and told me to bring the car down. They did the test on my car, and answered all my questions respectfully! read more

1997 Ford F-350 with 7.3 diesel. Truck wouldn't' start, engine turning over very slowly. I am down here in LA on business so asked around and was referred to Ray-a-Motive. Called and spoke to Kevin late in the day, and he said they could get on it first thing in the morning. He referred me to a towing company, and also told me about a local Enterprise rental company that gave a discount to Ray-a-Motive customers. Towing company had the truck at the shop by 8:30, and Oliver and I discussed the issue and he took great pains to thoroughly explain the diagnostic process and said he would call with his findings and an estimate. I was surprised at how promptly the diagnosis was (seized AC compressor). He outlined all facets of the repair, and gave me a price (which I considered appropriate for the amount of work they were doing). Not only did they have the truck ready to go by the end of the work day, Oliver came over and picked me up at the RV park at rush hour on a Friday night. They showed me the damaged parts that they had replaced, outlined every thing they did, and also checked all the other fluids and tire pressure. Getting that truck worked on is usually a pretty expensive process, but the cost was definitely in line with similar work I have had done on other vehicles. Bottom line is: I would not hesitate to use Ray-a-Motive again. Clean, professional, and timely repair to get me back on the road. read more

Ray-A-Motive.. i've been familiar with these guys and Ray himself for years. i usually service my own cars but anytime there is something i would find a little difficult to do or if i'm in a time crunch, Ray and his team would be the only guys i would trust to touch my car. Ray is familiar with my family, especially me. when i was young and bought my first car, i had a series of "bad luck" and Ray would always be the one to fix the problem and it would come back running like a champ. he has done such a good job that now i hardly see him anymore because the car still runs good.. and all i've been doing is the normal/standard maintenance, from oil changes to brakes and valve adjustments. if anything.. i might ask him or his team for advice on servicing/maintenance.. but that's it. Ray is a stand-up guy who prides himself on running a service shop that's honest, clean, reasonably-to-cheap in pricing, thorough and good at what they do. his team of mechanics have a certain demeanor that shows professionalism on a whole other level.. they all seem to love their job and take pride in their work which gives me satisfaction knowing that the job was done right. The guys at Ray-A-Motive will do an initial inspection of the car at a reasonable fee and let you know in a timely manner if there is anything on the car that needs to be addressed. if it is something mechanical where Ray-A-Motive can take care of it, they'll let you know and provide you with a description in laymen terms and subtract the payment of the initial inspection from the service bill. I brought my 93 Toyota RV In to this place for an oil change - 4 quarts of oil and an oil filter. There's a sign on the wall that has a price of $44.95 (starting price ) for an oil change. The guy writes up the work order for $168.00!! I asked why and he said because it was an RV and that's what I paid last time I brought it there. True, I did, but they told me the first time they would check out the whole RV so I accepted that. I did not want that this time. I just wanted an oil change. The place is set up to work on RV's so I was astounded that they would charge that much to pull a plug, drain the oil, screw on another filter all in a 20 minute job. I told them I was going somewhere else and walked out. I drove to Jiffy Lube and paid $52 and was out of there in 20 minutes! $110 difference!!!!!! In these times we don't need price gouging - we need places like Ray-A-Motive to charge a fair price for a standard oil change. Shame on you dudes! read more

We've been coming here for years, when it was just a little shop tucked away in a hidden area! This business has saved us thousands of $$$$ over the years. First time was when we brought in a recently purchased '79 Suburban with a lot of deferred maintenance issues. Ray's staff took the time to make us a list of items that needed attention. Over the ensuing months we ticked off the issues, one by one, as we could afford to attend to them. Never had to add to the list, it was a reliable vehicle for us for the time we had it serviced by Ray-A-Motive. Later, we decided to purchase a classic Bronco from a local Cerritos Auto Square dealership. Upon purchase, we drove it directly to Ray's to have it checked-out. Again, Ray's team came through for us! They took it for a test drive, and felt something was amiss. The put the Bronco up on the lift and checked it out. They discovered the frame was cracked! We returned the Bronco to the dealership for a FULL REFUND! We would not hesitate to recommend Ray's to anyone, we've always had good experiences and professional service. read more

I was at the end of my options. My husbands 1989 beloved jeep would not pass smog. We had taken it to 5 different smog shops none of which could understand why it wasn't passing or figure out where to start making it able to pass. Jeep Solution sent me to Ray A Motive. I was not aware there is such a thing as diagnostic smog shop. Rays saved the day, week, month ...when I arrived they were very professinal and told me they had been expecting me like I was royalty. Ladies the facilities are excellent, clean, and very pleasant. Tony even plugged my phone into his charger...They called the next day and gave me the good news not only had it passed smog it was ready for pick up! One of the greatest surprises it didn't break the bank. Tony and Oliver were great. When I couldn't get a Uber ride due to problems with my phone they gave a ride to my car at the other shop. The service was excellent. I went in with a particularly difficult smog check issue on my Suburban: it wouldn't complete its pre test and, after about two years, I wasn't getting anywhere. Other shops, and even a dealership, couldn't figure out why the tests wouldn't complete. Ray took a look at it and traced the issue back to the truck's computer interacting with the supercharger. Took my '72 pickup for an oil change. Unfortunately (but I wasn't surprised since classic trucks are always needing something fixed here or there) they found an issue with my power steering pump and they were able to fix it and now my truck runs the best it ever has since I've owned it! They even fixed my loose headlight and did a little maintenance as a courtesy. Nice staff and are always willing to talk the customer through what is going to be done and what was done. This place is a rip off I wouldn't let them touch my tricycle!!!!!! I took my truck there for a minor head gasket fix on a head that was only two years old all most brand new, it is used only off road only Toyota 1985 pick up. I installed the head my self and I am a aircraft mechanic / Inspector by trade for over 45 years. when they called and told me it needed a valve job as well I was outraged and knowing the head was almost new that had me buy the balls it was to late to take my truck away from these thieves it was torn apart and most likely would not put it back together right for retaliation they screwed me with even a kiss. This Toyota motor 22R is known for blowing the head gaskets bottom line is next time I will fix it my self instead of taking it to a band of lying bunch of Thieves. I didn't have the time to do it so I learned a good lesson trust no one most of them are thieves. And this place is!!!!!!!!!!!! The bottom line here is I paid 360$ for a brand new head this was not a remanufactured head it was brand new and if it only had 3000 miles on it Toyota parts last 300.000 miles or more it came with new head bolts and all the gaskets. The quote from ray a motive was for around 375$ or 400$ so when I was told it needed a valve job as well and it would be 1.500$ my spider senses thought you people are crazy I needed my truck and the smog was do so I told the thieves to just do it and give me back my truck a.s.a.p. ... I believe in a honest day's pay for a honest day's work. However there's nothing honest about this place! This is sad when you have to defend you business but trying to belittle others, Bottom line here is this place is a rip off! If you need a honest mechanic go to Jim's Automotive on woodruff ave in Lakewood, Not this place! Ray A Rip Off Ray is mad because he got caught lying about my truck needing a valve job on a brand new head so his original estimate of 400$ was misdiagnosed by him and like all of us we dread it when the rip off mechanic calls us with the bad new (lies)! 1.100$ dollars later. This asshole called the cops on me cause I wanted too kick his lying cheating ass! I recently moved into the Lakewood/Bellflower area and needed an oil change for my girlfriends car and my car. I've always believed in supporting local businesses over chains so i decided to go here instead of a large chain like Jiffy Lube. After scavenging Yelp for decent places to get it, I decided on this place because of the solid reviews and people saying they generally got their cars done faster than originally estimated. When i first walked into the office it was pretty quiet. It was around 10 am, but i had to wait around 5 mins to get someone to help me. I didn't really think much of it, because I know they have other stuff to do. I spoke to Ray, the owner, and he seemed like he didn't really care to talk to me too much. Not sure if he was having a bad day, but like before, it didn't really bother me. After he took the keys and a quick look at both cars, he walked us back into the office (without saying a word in between) to take our info down. After that he showed me some paperwork and left me under the impression that the oil changes would cost around $50 bucks, which is very reasonable and made sense to me. Little did i know however, this was for EACH car. After i left the shop I was under the impression that BOTH cars would be a total of $50. A couple hours later i got a call saying my cars were ready so I headed over there to pick them up. Up until he told me the total out loud and took my debit card, i had no idea that he was charging me FIFTY, 5-0, for an oil change on EACH car. (before the 10% yelp discount) Now i don't know if this is a special "college kid" price he was running on me, but $50 for an oil change is simply ridiculous. I paid $90 bucks after the Yelp discount for an oil change for two cars, which I have never heard of in my life. Not sure if Ray thought he would try to pull a quick one on someone he thought didn't know anything about cars, or if this was his standard price for a regular oil change. Also, i believe my "college kid" appearance affected the service i received, because my experience was nothing like some of the positive reviews describing friendly customer service. Either way, i would never come here again for an oil change, and i recommend fellow yelpers to also avoid this place for oil changes. read more

I went to Ray-A-Motive today to get a smog check. We called ahead of time and was told about the yelp check in deal- however, I don't have a smart phone (yes I'm behind the times) and I couldn't check in for the 10% discount. I spoke with Dawn and she said it was not a problem, they would still give me the discount. I went in about an hour later and there were two cars ahead of me, so I had to wait about 40 minutes by the time it was done, which I was fine with. The waiting area is nice and has complimentary water, coffee and snacks- I didn't take advantage of it, but I really liked having the option! They have a TV with short programming and the waiting area is well kept. I was the only person there for most of the time and took over a couch to study for a test while waiting. Once my car was done, Jorge processed my payment, which was reasonable especially after my discount. I had an enjoyable experience at Ray's and would recommend it! read more

I needed an auto repair shop so I checked yelp (of course) and found great reviews of this place. I actually dropped by on Saturday but they were closed so I came back on a Tuesday. I dropped my car off at 8:00 in the morning because my check engine light was on and I needed an oil change. I get the invoice estimate and it says $85 to diagnose the cause. I thought "no problem" because a previous yelper said that they would credit the inspection amount from the service bill. The service guy at the counter said that he would call me in a couple of hours to let me know about the problem. I actually considered waiting at the shop because it was clean and nice but I'm so glad that I didn't. After four and a half hours, I still hadn't heard anything from them so I called them at 12:30pm. Ray, himself, actually got on the phone and said that I had a problem with my vtec solenoid but they were waiting for a price on parts and would get back to me. He was very nice on the phone. Then after another hour, I get a call at 1:30 and was quoted the price: $155 for parts and $120 for labor and the diagnostic inspection is NOT deducted from the final bill. I even told them that I read on a yelp review that they deduct the inspection fee and he said that they don't do that. I ask if they give a discount since I'm getting the work done by them, he said no. By this time, it's almost 2pm so it's too late to go to another shop and try to get a better price. They already got me for $85 for the inspection so I'm basically at their mercy so I authorize the work. I ask when it should be ready by and he says that he'll try to get it by 3:30-4pm. I get a call at 5pm saying that my car is ready. I get to the shop and pay the $420 and tell the service guy and Ray that I was disappointed that I had to wait five and a half hours to get a call back. He was nice enough to apologize but as the owner did nothing to compensate me for my time. I was curious about the pricing so I called the dealership and over the phone they quoted me the same price for parts and $105 for labor. So they were not even cheaper than the dealership. read more

This place is a sham- took my toy hauler in with a brake problem. Told them I that I thought the electrical was good, but the brakes were not grabbing properly. I told them I was looking to get out that day, and even said there would be a little extra in the repair for them if they could get me on the road that day. They called me shortly after and said all the brakes were showing grease inside the drums, really all four.... They then said they would need to replace all the drums backer plates etc. for a price of $2100.00. I told them no thanks now the facts.... Now that the trip was canceled I took the trailer home and pulled the drums myself (they assumed I was not mechanical)- there was grease in one drum, the rest were dry as a bone. Lastly I called a local RV repair place that was my first choice (too busy to get me in that day) and they told me that even if all drums needed to be replaced it would be no more than $700.00 max. So please stay away from these guys unless overpaying for unneeded work is your cup of tea. Ohh and I had t pay them $106.00 just to get the trailer back, they had my truck so what to do. As a follow up since I don't have the room to do the repairs myself, I took the trailer to Deluxe RV, professional and courteous, with a total bill of $220.00. Breaks work great. read more
