Been to Ray's several times in the past. I don't buy a lot of meat, but when I want something very special, this is the place to go. They have an excellent selection of beef, pork, chicken, and seafood. They also make all of their own sausages. The deli and bakery offer a nice variety of rolls and desserts as well. On this trip, I was looking for chicken gizzards to make fried gizzard appetizers, a real treat in my family. They had exactly what I wanted in the frozen section. I picked up a couple of one pound containers. Checkout was quick, and the staff were friendly as always. Pro tip. When it's busy, the parking lot can get a little crazy. This is our new favorite place to get our meat and cheese. It's such a great selection, so fresh, and fair prices. The employees are always so friendly and helpful. It's been years since my first review, and I have to give credit to a place that remains so good so long. Good butcher, high end meats, the workers know lots about said meats, and the service is both accurate and fast without being rushed or rude. They can handle being very busy on holidays, and yes this is the place for traditional American Thanksgiving and Christmas meats and even the ingredients for sides. Price matches quality. I would be cautious in the parking lot, pretty much every time I'm here, busy or not, someone my age who probably should have stopped driving a couple of years ago is trying to drive their big SUV in reverse while looking forward. read more

One of those rare places that gives you more than they advertise: This is not just a butcher shop, although it's a very good one. I enjoyed perusing the various products. Two that I purchased I would not purchase again. The pasty was mostly mashed potatoes, and the chicken pot pie, while offering generous amounts of chicken, had way too much liquid and a minimal amount of crust that was like cardboard. Premium prices for premium products. It's a large store with a healthy selection of if meats. I was happy with the steaks I purchased, however one was cut at kind of a wonky angle. Like a meat wedge, but it cooked up evenly using sous vide. There's a small area with what looked like general grocery and baked goods. I didn't explore too much because it was busy, though the checkout line moved quickly. Rays can be expensive but they have a great selection that you will not find in the big box grocery stores. I have been a fan of rays since my first visit and I could spend hours combining through everything. My buddy was in the UP and brought back some amazing looking pasty's with baby reds and and beef which I drooled over, he stated that Rays sells them frozen so I was excited. Rays if they did sell MI pasty's, they don't anymore and only sell their homemade version that is available I was told. Well their house brand hit the spot and I now have a new pasty place, I should try the famous north side one again just to make sure that I really like rays better. read more

Went into Rays looking for chow for a dinner. The problem was the guy behind the counter who had an attitude. I asked about an item and what the composition was. He seemed insulted and acted pissy. I've stopped into Ray's about 10 times and struggle to like them every time. The employees there are kind of grouchy or "meh" more often than not. But being it's close to my house I've continued to stop in now and then hoping I'd finally like the shop more. Each time I've purchased chicken there it's been dry. I bought the frozen ham loaf and it tasted off and was really crumbly. I bought a chicken there last week Friday. On Sunday I was going to put it in the oven and it was ROTTEN. Totally stunk up the kitchen when I unwrapped it. I'd have thought fresh chicken would last til then. I tossed it in the garbage can and drove to Sendiks and picked one up. Every time I go here the butchers are always "put out" they need to help you...today I go in and order over $80+ of items and when I order the Italian "roll ups" butcher says "you know you can't grill these"...I told him I grill them all the time...of course no response..needless to say I only go here if I receive a gift card...even then I don't want to walk through the door...PS mr. Alright so this is a small butcher shop and it may be a little more expensive than a regular grocery store but its like a mom and pop local place that has good products such as meats, cheeses, some seafood and pre made and deli items as well as some grocery, bakery and frozen. Now THIS is a butcher shop! We headed here after a disappointing experience at another butcher, and it was exactly what I was looking for. No matter what you want, Ray's has it. Chicken, pork, beef, seafood, jerky, sausage - the list goes on. If you want a weird cut, they'll do it for you. Want your chicken deboned? No extra charge! They even make niche items like kishka (not for everyone but it is quite tasty!). There are plenty of heat-n-eat options as well as pre seasoned/marinated meats to throw on the grill. We ended up with some lovely pork chops, homemade brat patties and the the biggest cordon bleu roast I've ever seen. Prices are quite high but you're paying a premium for quality. In addition to meat, Ray's has a large selection of spices and rubs, a small bakery and a good sized beer/wine area. If you live nearby you can pick up a little something for dinner, some sides from the deli and a bottle of wine to impress that special someone. Great service too - our butcher warned us how to correctly make a roast and was really nice. Parking lot is a little wonky too. Gone here for awhile now quality of meat is good. However first time buying lamb from them. It was in the back frozen so not thawed in front counter. Ordered 8 small pieces bone in (chops) total weight 2.6 lbs. got to register paid. Got in car realized holy smokes bill was $80 bucks something isn't right. .. check lamb price 22.95$ a pound.... Not sure if you're familiar with this side of Milwaukee but it goes for 9.95$ a pound fresh at any number of local butchers. Fresh cut not frozen... called and asked them what we could do? He said they can't return it once it's out of the shop even if it's not opened.. pretty much any regular store would. So guess I just go to the other local shops where is less than half the price for FRESH CUT IN FRONT OF YOU lamb. Sucks because I liked their sausage sticks and pre made dishes. read more

Not much to say about Ray's other than you just have to go there. We literally drive from CO to WI once a year and stock up on hundreds of their delicious brats. If you have never had one, I highly recommend the Mango Habanero brats. Spicy, sweat and meaty, delicious! ray's has really gone downhill. my partner and i just tried to eat a ribeye from ray's and were VERY disappointed. fully a third of the meat was inedible due to gristle. mind you this was like $18 lb. meat. i guess i should have known something was amiss when the butcher said they don't carry prime grade beef. frankly, this seemed like select grade being passed off as choice. time to find a new butcher shop. shame on you ray's. read more

Ray's is our "go to" butcher shop whether for chicken, beef, or pork. Ray's jerky is only surpassed by their ribs - both made on site. And for those of us who grill year round Ray's brats are ready whether in June, September or January. Ray's fresh turkey are ready for Thanksgiving. Their spiral hams can be complemented with shrimp. I was very disappointed with this butcher shop! Called them after being told that they had good prices on meat. I received a price and then when I called back the next day to place the order the price increased by almost 5 Dollars a pound! They Blamed the night person for giving me the wrong price! After I felt I was over charged, I Called around to other butcher shops and their price was 3 to 4 dollars cheaper! I felt obligated and needed the meat th purchased the meat, because I ordered it!! Rays is my favorite butcher shop in town. If you're looking for something special or even a little unusual this is the place. They have excellent top quality meats homemade sausages deli and bakery. Oh sure it's not cheap but this is quality stuff. They even have catering if you need it. If you don't have time to stop at several places, you can get your food and drink (beer, wine, booze) and get going. They have a fish fry on Fridays. You can order when you get there or call ahead. I just spent $12.34 for a small frozen package of Salisbury steak. There are no weights on any of the frozen pre made products. Imagine my surprise to find I had 3, count them 3 actual patties in gravy. They are allegedly $5.99 per pound. I don't think I am out of line in expecting a bit more for the money. The gravy was extremely bland, as were the "steaks". I either was vastly over charged by the little old lady who was weighing the pans, or the company has no problem ripping the consumer off. I also paid $18.70 for a small pan of beef and gravy. I have not thawed this out yet. If I would have known the weights before I bought, and actual contents, meat to gravy, it would have been no sale. Never again. Former customer. read more
