Rupena's is a local legend. We love visiting their deli and meat counter. We go here for special occasions and now for the chicken salad made famous by social media influencers. They now have a great little cafe in honor of the owner's son. They make great sandwiches. Service can be a bit slow and they are sometimes understaffed, but they are doing their best to rebuild the store after some hard times. Walk in to buy my Hungarian sausage. As im walking up to the counter the guy is eating behind the counter where all the food is. Im pretty sure thats not sanitary and i did say something but the guy didn't seem to care. It looks like a store about to go out of business when you go in. Only thing thats worth buying is the Hungarian sausage and stuffed chicken breast if they have it. It isn't anything like it used to be. read more

I went to Rupenas for lunch for several years when I worked nearby. Haven't been in about 1.5 years. Went today for the viral chicken salad. There was a definite buzz about the chicken salad- and a line in the deli (they move it along quickly). I would say it's worth the hype! Tumeric and chicken bouillon give it the yellow color. Carrots give it crunch and a tad of sweetness. Great consistency. Also got a loaf of marble rye which is terrific. Don't sleep on their soups! Delish! read more

They never told me there was a max limit when I called. I only needed 2 large containers. Stopped off to get Italian Sausage, as I figure meat from a butcher shop should be better than a grocery store butcher shop. Discovered I was very wrong and will never go to a butcher shop again. I love supporting local businesses, especially now. However, if you're going to up, charge your customers for paying in cash that is a major Miss step. My total was originally $20.68. If I were to pay with my card, the business would pay a card fee granted that is a tax deductible business expense. Once the cashier noticed I was paying cash. My total went to $20.70 yes it's only two cents but here's my two cents round down and take the loss and report that as a loss, also fix your pothole filled parking lot. read more

Fabulous meat department. Try their bone-in stuffed pork chops! Great neighborhood store. Slim pickins for a while there while they got back on their feet because of a costly coolant problem. We recently celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary with around 50 of our family, other relatives and friends. We chose to have it catered by Rupena's. They did a fantastic job. We received compliments from our guests. The food was wonderful -- hot things were hot and cold things were cold. There was probably enough food for 100 so we were able to give some "care" packages for our guests to take home. I highly recommend Rupena's for any special event. Oh.... and I forgot to mention. Visited on 03-24-26 approx 2PM. The place looks like it's going out of business. LOTS of empty shelves, checkout stand had nothing but empty boxes of impulse buy items. I realize this is not the reason people shop there but it's a depressing vibe. The RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL bespectacled "child" working the meat counter has no business dealing with the public. We ordered 5 LBS of Italian sausage, he wraps 5 single sausages and places them on the counter. I explained we wanted 5 LBS, he told me, "No, you asked for 5, for that size of an order you have to call ahead." For 5 pounds? Seriously? Odd, it's never been a problem before. Odder still, I didn't see any signs posted regarding this. Clearly angry, the RUDE, DISRESPECTFUL, "child" then placed 5 pounds in a bag and set them on the counter, not saying another word. No "thank you's", nothing, even after I said, "Thank you." The female "child" working the register was slightly more friendly yet no more personable. Ordered catering for my daughters party and I was so glad we did! They're famous chicken never disappoints and their Italian sausage was the ultimate bomb! Nice sizes enough to share for the weight watchers. Plenty of delectable flavor with peppers and onions in a delicious tomato sauce. You can Gold potatoes were perfectly seasoned. My in-laws love going to Rupena's and my father-in-law was parked in the veteran's parking spot waiting for my mother-in-law while she shopped. One of the owners drove up and while he was walking in, he stopped to chat with my FIL and thanked him for his service, which brought a smile to his face. He popped inside to grab a delivery order and when he walked back past my FIL, he handed him a breakfast item and said "breakfast is on me." This is is what I imagine a 1960s super market would have been like before all the big stores took over. I was told I have to try Milles Italian sausage because it's pretty good. Rupenas was the only place I called that had it so I went over. While looking at the amazing meat case I noticed a pan of house made smoke buts and I was not leaving with out one. It was very good and lean compared to that red wrapped fatty piece of garbage thing I see it the store. Yes the Milles sausage was very good by the way. This is a great old school store and a gem. Not the biggest or best selection but definitely has that small-town local store feel. The people are all super friendly and helpful and genuine. The burgers are my favorite to take home and throw on the grill. The entire deli selection is full of awesome options and could easily provide lunch everyday if you wanted to go get some fresh food. read more

I love the feel of this local grocery store. Employees are friendly and always willing to help. I remember having pig roasts as a child from here and it was always amazing! I stopped in 8/19 hoping they had a quick fish fry. Never, ever could I recommend. 2 pcs Cod, not that great, 1 potato pancake (very good), 1 small container of coleslaw "soup, all juice, nothing in it, pc of bread and you would think they would make there own tarter sauce, piece of lemon? NO, little packets, over priced crap, never again. Culver's has more for what I paid, 11.99 for nothing. So disappointed, guess go there for there meat, everything else is way over priced. Attended the pig and lamb roast yesterday. 7/18. Meat was sold by the pound, so I paid $15.00 for pig bones. Yeah!! And what meat there was tasted very average. I ended up having one small piece of meat because I was afraid to eat more. And I shouldn't have even eaten that much. What bothered me the most was that NO employee was wearing a mask. Rupena's is such a special place! My boyfriend and I have a tradition of picking up deli meatballs and Italian bread, on our way to visit my Sicilian grandma. Their deli food is delicious, and they have the cutest little "eatery". I hope it stays around forever, as its such a cute little gem of Milwaukee's Italian history. This is a great neighborhood store. Love it for the great fresh meat dept. along with the great salads and breads. I will typically venture to Rupena's when I want brats and burgers. They do a great job with flavors and spices. They have such a large variety of meats, this is a must go destination for any cookout. Rupens's is great if you are also looking for a nice variety of vegetarian foods, cheeses and canned goods. Came in on NYE, and ordered a BEAUTIFULLY cut Beef tenderloin. It came out thick and juicy. They're reasonably priced, and the butcher's we're on it! Despite being busy and 10 minutes to closing time, service was prompt and friendly. I will return for future select purchases. read more

So nice to have this relic of a different time right in my 'hood. A great prepared foods counter as well as that spectacular meat counter. My one disappointment was the lack of sort of "grab and go" meat - I went in looking for something I could throw in the oven without the need for extra preparation (filled chicken breast, wrapped filets, something along that line) for those busy/lazy dinner nights and I was a little let down in that area. Matt Rupena is a wonderfully friendly guy who volunteered to use my recipies and make Herring Salad (herring, beets, potatoes, apples, veal, etc.) for sale in their store over the Christmas/New Year holidays. A serious tradition in Northern Europe, it's a delicacy not easy to find in Milwaukee. Rupena' s could be the place to look for it in the future. My parents have been going to Rupena's since before I was born and I've grown up on their meat. Now that I'm married and on my own I'm still willing to drive 20 minutes across town, passing 2-3 other butcher shops, just to get to Rupena's. The parents were coming over for dinner. Rupena's was always the small grocery store that my parents went to for fancy meat, so yesterday I did the same and was not disappointed. The butcher guy was very knowledgable and friendly, possibly even excited about the filets I was getting (6 generously sized ones were under $40). Solid quality meats. While I was there, I decided to pick up the rest of my grocery list items because I was just too lazy to stop somewhere else. They had everything I needed and the employees were so helpful. At one point, a gal walked me over to the french onions which I couldn't find to save my life. She also ended up being the one at the register when I checked out. She helped bag my groceries and then another guy came to help too! I guess no one buys an overflowing cart full of goods at the small neighborhood grocery store. Wish I lived closer! read more

The smell! Grew up a few blocks away and I'll never forget the smell. Why is it that old corner groceries all have that smell?? I still crave the hot ham and Vienna rolls on Sundays. Now we try and stop in once in a while when we're planning on having nice steaks or sausages. The Hungarian are my favorite, but the brats and others are top notch as well. The mambo combo is just a mix of the leftovers of the other sausages and can be kind of fun. Check out the frozen case in the dairy aisle near the meat. They have more unusual sausages and meats there that they don't make regularly and have fresh. read more

Disclaimer: I am a vegetarian. Therefore, this store's meat doesn't factor in to this review. The overall review is based on other available products, store environment, and customer service. Rupenas is a block away from my parent's home, so once in a while we have to run here when we are out of a particular food item that is so small it does not warrant a drive to pick n scratch. Most recently, we stopped here after a walk to pick up some mozzarella cheese for pizza. Selection is very limited in all departments. We learned long ago to avoid the produce here (or, "fruit fly isle"). It is also impossible to find any natural products (maybe canned beans...). Everything has preservatives. They do carry a brand of soymilk, but that brand contains artificial flavors. Customer service is hit or miss. This time was fine . My previous visit was a bad experience. We also used to go here when I was little almost every Sunday to get ham and rolls. I recall them being delicious. However, when we learned more about healthy eating, we stopped buying bromated/bleached breads and nitrate/nitrite filled ham product. read more
