I was in need of a Filipino Barong for an upcoming wedding I'm attending and decided I wanted to go with something traditional, put Filipino Barong into a Yelp search, and Pioneer was the first one and pretty much only spot close to me that sells Barongs. I tried purchasing one of Etsy, and that was a debacle and wasted money. It was a reminder for myself that shopping local (especially clothes) is the way to go because the care and time the owner spent with me to describe the different fabrics and sizing is just something you can't get in the online shopping space. The owner is a one woman show and she's the designer of all the Barongs in her store. We tried on a couple different ones, and I was able to find exactly what I was looking for. Mine needed some alterations and she was kind enough to include it with the purchase. The place is cash only, so definitely be prepared with cash on hand. Brought in my brand new dress to be hemmed and taken in, and it came back in awful condition. There were multiple obvious snags in every area that was altered, the stitching didn't align, and the work was extremely sloppy. The dress was taken in way too much, so tight that I could barely move and it barely fit at all. The shop owner even struggled to help me put the dress on. I didn't gain nor lose weight because it was a two-week turnaround. If you care about your clothes, do not bring them here for alterations. To make things worse, the fitting room has no privacy whatsoever, people outside can clearly see you while you're changing. Overall, this was a completely unprofessional experience, and I would never bring anything here again. read more

The Piña Silk is my favorite so smooth and the designs are amazing with front and back detail depending on you and what she has available. Going here is very welcoming and if you love the culture of being filipino and wearing a barong, this is the place to be. It's in San Francisco and I wish I came here long time ago. I use to live in both the outer mission and Ingleside neighborhood and it was so convenient bringing all my needed alterations to her. She can get pretty busy with other customers' orders and sometimes can take up to 2-3 weeks for your alterations to be ready, so just make sure to come in with extra time if you need something right away. read more

Genneth is awesome. She has a cute little dog in the shop you get to see every time you come in! I used to only go to her to hem my pants, but now I get everything altered with her. She's altered my bridesmaid dress, scrubs for school/work, work pants, etc.. she's great at what she does and makes sure everything fits me snugly.
