Not overly salty which I really love. They were using big block quality mesquite wood charcoal for it and I noticed they actually put love into every chicken. I liked seeing them care about the flies and try and do what they could do keep them away. The vibes are chill and the food is on point. People saying that it needs more seasoning just didn't order correctly. You can order extra mother's seasoning for it, or buy your own Ray's seasoning to put on. The food itself was okay overall. The chicken was decent, and the pineapple slaw leaned more on the sweeter side than I personally prefer. Nothing was necessarily bad, but nothing really stood out either. The girl who took my order was very nice and friendly, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the person packing the order didn't seem very welcoming and gave off the impression that they didn't want to be there, which affected the overall experience a bit. We love huli-huli chicken so when we saw this spot on Yelp we knew we wanted to give it a try. The parking lot was pretty busy, they're off to the side of a grocery store and cars were coming in and out the whole time we were there. Definitely be careful coming in or backing out. It was a hot day when we stopped by and there was a short line. The team worked through orders pretty quickly as we all tried to find some shade. This is definitely a grab and go spot, and once we had our chicken we jumped back into the car to enjoy it. Don't forget to grab napkins. We've found huli-huli chicken is best enjoyed fresh, so we were dug in as soon as it was cool enough to enjoy without burning our mouths. My friends and I unintentionally went on a North Shore food crawl on our last day in Oahu and ended up at Ray's Kiawe Broiled Chicken. When I say this was the most MOIST JUICIEST FLAVORFUL CHICKEN EVER -- I mean it. We drove by and we noticed there were tons of ppl waiting in line -- that caught our interest. For a whooping $18, you get a full broiled chicken + the grandma special sauce which paired SO NICELY with the chicken. The chicken was tender + juicy + well flavored. We waited a bit for our chicken but it was worth it. There isn't seating to eat here but we walked across the street to where Island Vintage and Matsumoto Shaved Ice and ate there. We came by on a Sunday at 11 and there was no line. We were doing our own North Shore food crawl, so we got half a chicken to share with everyone. When in North Shore, you won't miss Ray's on the side of the street cooking up some chicken. Their set-up is all outside underneath some tarp which gives it a very local vibe. We ordered our food and they told us to come back in 15 minutes to get it and they were spot-on with their timing. You can watch the whole cooking process from when the chickens get prepped all the way to them putting in your to go box. The chicken was soft and delicious plus the coleslaw really helps round it all out. We also got a side of Grandma's sauce (vinegar, chili pepper, shoyu) to dip the chicken in. Although I enjoyed the flavor together, the combination was a bit too salty. Parts of the chicken were moist while some other parts were a bit dry. But for the price and quality of the food, Ray's is definitely worth a stop. You can't find a better value-to-quality ratio for your money in North Shore. read more

Ray's is in Hale'iwa under a canopy with the chicken spits roasting over a trailer box of coals. You would think that you were at a county fair or farmer's market. The smoky coal-fueled aroma is unmistakable and seeps its way into the chicken meat. We ate some right away and it's incredibly tender, juicy and delicioius - not in-your-face delicious because they don't put any kind of heavy rub or spices and I'm sure they don't brine the chicken. It's just a good old-fashioned spit roast. The smoke on the palate keeps even for leftovers, but the chicken meat can dry up if you decide to keep for later. You can ask for Whole Chicken or Half Chicken, then can add on rice scoops and/or pineapple cole slaw, which was pretty basic, except for a few pineapple mini wedges mixed in. For anyone that hasn't been to Oahu before, this truck is located in 'north shore' which, as you might guess, is on the northern section of the island. So, if you are without a car and staying in Honolulu/Waikiki area, you will be quite far. However, if you did rent a car, Ray's is a great stop while making your way around the island (I recommend going East then North from Waikiki). Make sure you check their hours and location as they may be in a different area depending on the day of the week! Hard to miss them as they're set up with a tarp tent and a mobile rotisserie (great for pictures). I recommend getting half a chicken for 1-2 people; if you like it, you can always get more since a whole chicken seemed to be exactly 2x the price. The sauce tasted like it was just straight shoyu which was way too salty for the already-salty chicken. They took digital payments when I was here! read more
