The ribs were fall off the bone good, turkey was moist, fish and shrimp were crispy and seasoned perfectly! The OXTAIL?!?! Phew! ‍ you can only get those tender smoked cuts on a Thursday! When it comes to completing a delicious BBQ, the sides you serve are just as important! The smoked macaroni cheese, potato salad and rice everything! I've never had fried corn but I actually liked it! The sweetness of the cob and savory breading made for a good complement! I also don't want to forget the desserts! The food was pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised with the grilled vegetables. They were seasoned to perfection. They were grilled to a great consistency. And they provided enough for the amount of money paid. I also had the corn salad. It was too sweet or too much Italian dressing for me. I am happy that this option was available as I don't eat meat. Found this spot on restaurant week on the gram. Walked in greeted promptly and placed order. Name called picked up food and it was on. The sausage were good texture wise and flavor . The chicken was smoked perfectly with that smoked flavor. The ribs were tender and flavorful we enjoyed that Q. I've always patronized Ray's BBQ because it was delicious and the staff were friendly and I appreciated the amount of food I got for the price. But, that has changed! I used to go every week and started noticing staff's attitude and the quantity and quality of the food went down. I went last week and ordered a kids meal (because I started a new medication) and couldn't eat much. They gave me my food and said the brisket was no longer an option for my order. Anyway, I got my food and didn't check it, but I normally do. Drove away and started eating in my car because I was on my way to work. The meat was COLD! I called and the manager was rude and said it was nothing she could do because I had to bring it back. I told her... I live on the Northside and I was a long way away. She said, oh well, that's our rule. She was so rude and nasty without a compromise, I had to hang up in her face. NO MORE!! So sad. Disclaimer: I have not tried the BBQ here, which I'm assuming is what they're known for. I was on the hunt for some fried catfish close by and this place checked the box. I called in to place a takeout order during stay-at-home order in Houston. The lady who answered said that she couldn't take orders over the phone and that I would need to order online. Alright...not sure how difficult it was to punch in a phone order? I tried placing an online order, but the system wouldn't allow me to, so then I called back stating the issue and asking if I could just place my order over the phone. The same lady said that she would only allow it this one time. Okay...I was hoping to support a local business during this COVID-19 crisis but if I'm inconveniencing her by making a phone order, then maybe they don't need my business. All that aside, I decided to give it a try this one time. When I came to pick up my order, everybody inside was super friendly and thanked me for coming. I was completely surprised because this was a totally different feel from what I got over the phone. The fish was decent and plentiful...$12.95 for a 3-piece meal with fries and hush puppies. The fried catfish wasn't as crispy as other places I've had it, but maybe that's because it was in a to-go box for the 15 minutes from the restaurant to my house. I have to say the BEST part was the fried corn on the cob. I got this as an extra side because I had read so many good reviews about it...and boy did it live up to the hype. I never knew such a thing existed but this was heaven in my mouth. Buttermilk breading was the perfect cherry-on-top to something as simple as corn on the cob. We tried Ray's basically on a whim. Surrounded by fast food restaurants we were familiar with, we thought heck no, let's try this Ray guys BBQ joint. And boy did they deliver. Huge, overloaded chopped brisket sandwiches. Monster sized stuffed brisket baked potatoes. Excellent sides and peach cobbler to die for. Price typical for meat centric BBQ. Best of the best in the opinion of an old lifelong Texas couple. Service staff were polite and efficient and were rewarded with a well deserved generous tip. Busy, but no wait for an early afternoon weekday lunch. Whenever we stay locally, we'll be back. I definitely want to try the sausage next time. Enjoy! read more

Last week, I finally got by the new Ray's BBQ Shack and it was what I expected. The old place was small and cramped with minimal parking and next door to a gas station. The new place is at least twice the size in a small strip center with much more parking and the interior is sparkly new. Walking up to the counter, I ordered the 1/2 chicken plate with sides of dirty rice and home style beans. With a soft drink and tax the total bill was $14. The food was ready in less than 10 minutes and I can tell you that nothing was lost with the move to the new location. The chicken was juicy, smoky and a pleasure to eat. The dirty rice was truly cajun style with a hint of smoke and the beans were savory with some onion and brisket thrown in. This was a solidly good tasting meal. I don't think Ray's gets all of the credit it's due in Houston's BBQ scene. When I'm in the area, this is where I want to go to get my Q fix. P.S. BOR!! Once again, I saw an IG friend post their plate and I was definitely intrigued by the way their Mac & cheese was looking. *Disclaimer* Smoked Mac is not pictured because I ate it while driving. I place a togo order of Half Rack Baby Back Ribs with extra BBQ sauce, the Smoked Mac & Beans. My estimated wait was 20 minutes and I was 20 minutes away, so perfect. When I arrived they had separate lines for ordering, pickups, and call ins/online. This way my line was short so all I had to do was walk up, sign & go. It was a smooth process. I hadn't eaten all day so I ate my Mac & Cheese on the way home. The only thing that was disappointing was the portion side of it and that it wasn't as seasoned to my liking but a little salt & pepper fixed that. Maybe had I dined in I would've had a better portion size. Nonetheless it was still good. When I got home I ate the beans which had a great taste for me. A little smokey, spicy, & sweet. I love that this restaurant is black owned and family operated. This place is definitely Houston Hotspot. The food was amazing. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful. I don't know what was in the slaw that was sweet but it was a good surprise. The bbq sauce was a good blend between tangy and a sweet. The main point of the review though is the service.
