Our Family has frequent Ray's Traditional Pizza in Cresskill, NJ for several years. They are a great establishment for the following reasons: +1* Managers/Pizza Makers - they are fast and efficient. +1* Restaurant - is simple, friendly and clean. +1* Clerk - courteous at times offers +1* Food - is good and the garlic knots are the best in the neighborhood. -1* - their professionalism is inconsistent. Sometimes everyone have attitudes and sometimes they are great. This past weekend all was good. With the exception, the outdoor sign states pick up & delivery only and I see inside a table of 4/5 people dining together. I will try to go back and take a pic of the signage. read more

I used to come here regularly but I always got weird vibes...stopped going for awhile due to COVID and went again recently and the guys who make the pizza have really bad customer service (this has always been the case but is even more noticeable now considering I haven't dined out for awhile and it's the first time in a long time I'm getting take out). I understand Spanish and I am Asian American and I overheard one of them saying "cheena puta" while he laughed and stared at me. None of them were wearing masks and they almost seemed annoyed that I was wearing one. I realize the mandate just lifted but I still have to wait a few weeks to be fully vaccinated. It was a huge turn off to be treated this way, especially considering how expensive the slices are. Please train your staff properly to not be rude and racist! In terms of the pizza, it tastes good and is generally consistent...but the bad customer service makes me think that I should stop going if I always leave with a nasty taste in my mouth. Always very long long wait time on the phone, and finally when you have a chance to order, he keeps hanging up when I'm not even done finishing the orders! Tried this place in town recently. TERRIBLE customer service. Nothing went without an attitude and everything was overpriced, and the front-desk girl I found especially snarky (she was reading a book at a table in the seating area instead of helping out). Went home and the pizza was bland, not quality and fresh for what I was paying for. What a joke. You'd think smaller, local businesses would make more of an effort toward serving their communities considering all that's happened with lockdowns... Apparently that's not the case here. Food is ok, but I was absolutely disgusted by our experience tonight. I was there with my boys - 8 years old - and my husband. A gentleman and his friend who were quite friendly with the manager (I think she was the manager...she's usually just sitting at the table whenever we go) were absolutely obscene, racist, and loud. Now, I understand that you can't control who comes to eat at your restaurant, but, as the manager, you don't have to schmooze with the jerk saying awful things and encourage him by continuing to converse and laugh with him. To be fair and to her credit, she did at one point giggle and whisper, "Stop saying racist things!" Unfortunately I have to leave this terrible review, because quite frankly the food is good... but the service is trash. Particularly the girl who answers the phone is rude, incompetent, and just a horrible listener. She could not take down a simple card number after many attempted tries. She was so eager to tell me the card declined instead of slowing down and listening. It's truly insulting that I had to tell her many times it was impossible for the card to be declining, and that she was punching it in wrong. I sure as hell would not be ordering food I could not afford. What would I gain by calling, ordering and then not being able to pay for the food? Please explain. Been trying lots of different pizza places since the pandemic started. Happy to say finally found great pizza at a good price!!!! I can't eat cheese so it's often an issue getting my order correct. I had a large pizza with breaded eggplant .... delicious!!! My husband had a large cheese pizza and he raved about his. This is the SECOND time they have messed up my order. The first time it happened I learned to always check the bags before I leave. And I still do. I ordered dinner for 3 people with an order of garlic knots. I personally ordered grilled chicken with a side of broccoli. How do you mess that up? The most uncomplicated part of the entire order! The hostess shoved my food in a carrying box, squished them all together, you could hear the containers crunching together. I tried checking the bag that said grilled chicken and side of broccoli. I saw the broccoli on top and a dish under but couldnt see inside as the broccoli covered it combined with 3 other bags squished together making it almost impossible to even open the bag to begin with. So I gave them the benefit of the doubt, stupid me, and trusted that the chicken was there. What I got was something along the lines of big slop and expired broccoli! I said well I guess I'll just have garlic knots but even they were burned to a crisp! I will never order from Ray's again! read more

Pizza is definitely good, thin enough that it's not all fluff, thick enough it's not a crisp. The sauce isn't to thick or thin but could use a bit more seasoning and the toppings are plentiful. It's soggy enough that when folded in half it's a bit floppy at the end but your toppings aren't falling off from the moment you pick it up. The crust isn't that great, not enough chew, but that may be a pizza-to pizza case. When ordering a put it's ready in about 10 minutes so it makes it great for a quick meal. Typical Italian pizza shop that has a decent selection of toppings. The paninis are pretty good in terms of bread to ingredients ratio. Plus the portion size was just right. My workplace orders from here often for meetings and seem to like their pasta choices and hero sandwiches. read more

During my time on this planet I have learned many key things in regards to the art of dining at restaurants. One which I have chosen to live by is giving eateries a second chance. While sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised by a second visit this was not the case when I returned to Ray's. I entered and the place was filled to the brim with customers, I think a local high school must have had lunch or something. A common misconception is that a crowded restaurant is automatically good but this is a fallacy and could not be more apparent then at Ray's. Because the plethora of people the staff was unorganized and not particularly friendly. Their system of serving its customers can certainly be improved rather than a "free for all" like hungry lions waiting to be fed. Another complaint is that EVERY time I go to pay for my food some dude is waiting there asking me if I want a drink like it's on the house or something, this I find to be truly irritating. Then the food. I ordered 2 penne alla vodka slices and a mushroom slice. A total of 3 slices. I was shocked as I walked down to sit down with the eyes of judgment from various patrons. Clearly these immature pieces of sh*t have never been to a real pizzeria and are only used to their polished Ray's. Their eyes were glued on my large amount of food (which in reality is not that much food) as they chowed down their "salad slices" and various ~artisanal~ slices. I felt very uncomfortable while I ate my pizza. I even heard them talking behind my back. Can I just eat 3 slices of pizza in peace?, clearly not. While I can't blame the staff for the actions of the patrons it did degrade my experience. Also the pizzas quality got worse since my last visit. There was a significant increase in oil on the slices and the crust was not up to par. Needless to say this will be my last visit to Ray's Pizzeria. I gave it a second chance and unfortunately it just did not work out. I give Ray's a 2 out of 5 stars and that is being generous. read more

PROS: The atmosphere of this place is the most Italian out of any other pizza place in the area. The prices are the same here like any other pizza joint and they have a lot to choose from on the menu. During high school lunch, I see a lot of kids going over to Ray's making it a great hangout for the youth. The bathroom is very clean and staff is quick with your order. CONS: Where to begin.... The quality of the food is not that good. The pizza is thin and tastes like it was pre-heated, the pasta and meat seem like it was bought from Restaurant Depot, and the tables are never clean. Parking is limited in a lot around the back or on the small street. But the worst thing about them was that they failed their satisfactory report multiple of times. OVERALL: This is a cute place to go to feel like your in Italy and the menu along with their prices are the usual pizza joint treatment. But they are not clean and the quality of the food isn't there, go to Cresskill Pizza instead. read more

They make a strong showing with their uber-traditional Margherita pizza, but they also have great "new wave" pizzas including an outstanding Buffalo Chicken pizza. We frequent this local spot for pizza and inexpensive Italian entrees. You can BYOB and bring the kids!! The pasta fagule (sp?) is great! And so are the sautéed broccoli rabe and spinach sides. The pasta marinara is good too. It's all over salty. That's my only complaint. As for the attitudes people refer to in these reviews -- this is NJ! Terrible service, I was treated incredibly rudely. I ordered based on their menu online. When I got there, I was charged more money than what was stated on the menu online. I informed the cashier of the price online and he showed me the physical menu showing higher prices. He said nothing and left in the middle of ringing up the food. I can forgive the price mistake and actually paid the higher price, but the cashier's rude attitude was inexcusable and I will not be returning. I can't speak for any other food items, but we tried their eggplant wrap and it was soggy. Their Panini was not on typical panini bread, and was very bland. When I lived in Cresskill, NJ -- it was my go-to spot until becoming ill from Ranch salad dressing. 10 years later, I decided to give it another shot and just as a finale for you folks, I'm closing my doors on Ray's in Closter. I want to commend Ray's and their evening manager for how they handled our order recently. Friday night we called at 6 pm to order 4 Old fashioned Sicilians and some sides for 7 PM for a party. I was very late picking up and by the time I got there at 7:40, it became quickly apparent that they had not even started my order. Turns out the computer system was not printing correctly and our order had been misplaced. I had already paid so I just as I was resigning myself to a long wait, the evening manager came out, handed me a credit card receipt, apologized and explained that he was giving me a full refund. I thought this extraordinarily generous but I really appreciated the gesture. And the pies were delicious! read more
