I had a Fairfax County inspector come in to see what had been done so far. It failed. The inspector asked if I was sure the person who did the work had been licensed. Some places he had used too small a cable, other cables went back and forth between boxes, and in some places he'd put three lines where only two should go. I hired a new company and they also asked if a licensed electrician had done the work they were so incredulous. It's cost me almost $5,000 to redo the poor work City Lights had done. And then I found out that when he pulled our meter in April he had put it back in UPSIDE DOWN. We have an old meter so it will let power flow while upside down but will not register any use. As a result Dominion thought we were trying to steal electricity and pulled the meter without warning. It took me hours of phone calls, the intervention of our new electricians, and $1500 in cash to get our meter restored. Of course that left a black mark on our credit report. This was to date the single worst experience I'd even had with a contractor. And yes, I have photos and documentation.

The Meyer electrician carelessly re-attached the box more than a full 2" below where it was, at the top of the frame (see photos). The box's misplacement now interferes with waterproofing the siding of my house, so I am now taking bids from other electricians just to raise the box. Upon seeing the photographs after the repair below, a contractor of my acquaintance commented, "That does look a bit shabby." I sent Walt Meyer an email with the photographs, with the comment that nobody should be proud of the job. His only response was to send me my paid invoice. Shabby is part of the company ethic. One review starts with "Don't do it. Just plain do it." I concur. The company takes no pride in its work. You may get lucky, but the company is cheap because it does not stand behind its work.

All of our duplexes have a similar layout and were built at the same time (in 1947), so it was important to me to find someone who knew the particular quirks of our older home. Dennis and his team came in and did phenomenal work installing an attic fan, stair access, and flooring to our previously unusable attic. All of us were surprised when he opened the attic to find blown-in insulation, which complicated the job and required some extra insulation be removed - not a small task. Had I known we had blown-in insulation, I would have told him prior to having him come for the job. He was extremely reasonable and asked for a very nominal fee for the insulation removal and clean up - far less than I would have thought it would cost. The team still finished the job on time despite the extra work, and we now have tons more storage space in our small home, which is invaluable, and an attic fan to keep our house much cooler in the summer months. While he was there, he also put extra screws in our loose gutters, just because he noticed they were loose, and fixed a switch in our house that wasn't working, all for no additional charge. For the cost of the remote and switch, he even installed a remote for our ceiling fan/light. Due to issues with the ceiling fan, Dennis came two more times to resolve the issue, which turned out to be the type of lightbulb we were using. I'm totally blown away by his commitment getting the job done right and making sure his customers are satisfied. He will be the first person we call for work on our home in the future, and I will be recommending him to all of my neighbors.
