I'm reviewing this business for the concept of it. I wish I had found this place before we re-modeled. Although I find it a good concept store, I found some things a bit pricey for " re-used " products. They had vintage crystal-looking knobs that were nice-looking... but not for $60 each! Doors and appliances were on sale 20%. Their tile was nice, but you really have to go there with an open mind to see what you need. I was looking or vintage signs, which they had, but wouldn't sell. Went to Let them Eat Cupcakes on Beretania the other day, and was oogling their table. I know, I'm a furniture junkie. "Your table is SO PRETTY. From Ikea or sum'n?" "We actually built it. Wood from ReuseHI with dowels to hold the lumber together, sanded/ varnished and we got the legs from Ikea" Oh boy, I wanted to DIY Channel up my entire house after that. Visited the warehouse at the end of Forrest st. in Kaka'ako and fell in love with their hipster sitting area with a charming little boat and rocking chair. There's wood trimming, lumber, screens, door pulls, sinks, tubs, chandeliers, marble back splash tiles from the Trump hotel, different types of tile, roofing material, light bulbs, drawers, appliances. They have CHALKBOARDS = total love and a few random things like Exit Signs and tree stumps/logs. A lot of cool doors! Like french door type, over sized doors, Asian screen doors, a huge cherry sliding door, a glass door, and tons of pretty windows. This is the place I like to go once in a while to see whats new. They gut out or demo houses and resell the goods. You can find some incredible high quality stuff here at bargain prices.... hard to imagine finding shoji doors, 3ft diameter elaborate patina chandelier, 24x24 travertine marble slabs and all types of wood from koa to mahogany all under one roof. I'm a DIY wannabe. When ever I'm not yelping I'm pinteresting (which is a great time waster and my latest obsession). I've discovered tons of DIY projects through pinterest. The next thing on my Pinterest-To-Do-List is to make a headboard using pallets. ReUse Hawaii is a great go-to place for salvaged woods, glass, window panels, door knobs and other DIY supplies. I didn't find pallets but I recently bought a redwood fence (to turn into my headboard) for only $40. A little cleaning and sanding, attach it to the bead frame, and voilà! NEW HEADBOARD! ReUse Hawaii is closed Sundays but you can do your shopping or drop off your items during their warehouse hours. If you're buying, they do not deliver but they will hold your item for a few days until you arrange for transportation. Be patient: you may not always find what you're looking for during your first visit. But eventually, you'll find that piece for a unique addition to your home. read more

This place is amazing! We just moved into a new place that's larger and have been doing the whole "oh my gosh we could build a planter box for the garden here...we could change this back door out with something more vintage...we could replace the ceiling lights with more unique ones" etc etc so we decided to finally give this place a try because shit ain't cheap! Within 30 minutes we had picked up an orbital sander, hand saw, tool box, complete ratchet set, TONS of wood (mostly from the free pile) and all sorts of cool tiny little tiles that had been donated and were also in the free pile. We scored all this for $33! I'm going back later today to see if the screen door I found is still there now that I've measured my door jam. This place claims they wasn't to lower the amount of stuff going to the land fill. But in reality they are only looking for things that can make them a $. I was extremely disappointed with they're conduct when I called to donate allot of brand new and totally reusable stuff. They told me that I would have to wait as they went through all the boxes and take back all the stuff they don't want. I've been to this place at least a dozen times now and I have yet to leave with a purchase. I love it! Each time, I go there with a project in mind but as soon as I walk in, my brain turns to mush and I can barely remember what day it is let alone why I'm there. There is so much stuff in that store, I just wish they'd offer project classes because I'm useless at coming up with my own and even worse at replicating stuff by having to look back at instructions/recipes every other second. We always check here first before going to the local hardware and building supply businesses. It's amazing what you can find and re-use at a fraction of the cost. We are huge fans of the recycle and re-purpose movement. We've also found some great treasures here. Our microwave died and we just happened to find one here the next day for $5!! That was 4 years ago. We figured we would spend the $5 and then take our time looking for a new one. That hasn't happened yet! We also bought 2 matching redwood doors a few years ago for $10 each during a door sale. We just installed them into a fence we replaced and they look wonderful! I still love this place but my second visit wasn't as happy as my first. I brought my parents who were visiting to grab some unique wood pieces for a bookcase we were making. When we went to check out our cashier made us feel like we were bugging him. Last time we were given five free cuts, this time it would have been two but he made it perfectly clear that needing our wood cut was the biggest inconvenience -- we actually took it home and bought a saw to cut it ourself. If my parents weren't there I would have made them cut it out of spite. I get that it was thirty minutes to closing but doing 5 cuts isn't going to take up that time. I've been back again since and was greeted with nicer employees who were extremely helpful (like my first experience). I still recommended the establishment and tell all of my friends about it but I definitely recommend not coming close to closing if you need something cut and want to get treated better than an annoyance. read more

Best place to wile away an afternoon dreaming of all the handy & amazing up-cycling projects you could craft from random plumbing materials and old dresser drawers. With boxes, bins and piles of reclaimed building materials, its the first place I search for light bulbs and the only place where I can find expensive Italian pendant lights that some home owner in Kahala just had to discard. People complain about the prices and it's just like any other choice in the world: You could get it cheaper at Walmart, but is price truly the reason you're wandering around a hot, dusty reclaimed building supply place in Kaka'ako trying to find inspiration? Very clean, organized, staff helpful enough. I like that they stay busy keeping the place safe so customers can roam freely. Pricing: depends on what you are looking for...some stuff was crazy cheap, some stuff...not so much. I do wish they were able to create more masterpieces, ie end tables, benches, shelves, from their gold mine...I love the look of pieces made from reclaimed items, sadly, I don't have the time or skills to produce. it was fun to browse, and I did leave with an amazing piece of flawless granite. Received email from Re-Use Hawaii on 3/15 about some monkey pod slabs they had for sale. Website said to place order form thru their website. Placed my order on 3/15 and received confirmation same day. Email said someone would call. No call. Sent email asking about my order on 3/19 and got a reply from Carolyn on 3/20 that she tried to call and left a msg. No msg or vm received. She told me to call that day and she would get back to me before end of day. 3/25 and still no follow up. Placed an order for 3 slabs, 2 already sold. I'm glad others have had better service from them but for me, never again. read more

I would give the 6 start for the concept, but their staffing and managent ! I often drop of unused building supplies, for the most part you walk around looking for some one to help you, most of the time no one is around, or they are on break. The first thing that comes to mind when I visit a business with bad costumer service is a reflection of their manager/owenr. This time I was dropping off BRAND NEW DOORS. After 10 minute wait, some guy walked out with a soda in hand and asked if I had been helped, then he pointed for me to put doors in loading bay. After that he kept walking. ( it think has was done work and out the door) After dropping off my doors, I went to the trash can to throw away the plastic wrapper. There was a lady help someone else the whole time I was there. (and did a good job at ignoring me) As soon as I went to the trash can she ran up to me and started yelling and scream that I was in a "restricted area" and need to leave. As I tried to explain to the crazy angry lady that I had donated some supplies, she got even more crazy and asked who I had to talk to and did they give me permission, etc. By that time, I just want to leave, so as I walk back to my truck, she kept following my and yelling that I need to approved before I donated, and i could not just leave (if she would of just shut up for a second and listen, I would of told her that I just talked to a staff and did what they said) Even after I got in my truck and tried to leave, she kept sticking her head in my window and yelling! Now I see why this Co. is so messed up! Next time I will go to the dump instead of donated to them! read more

Be careful! They have a tricky return policy. Items must be BROKEN in order for you to be able to return them. My husband purchased a dishwasher and was told by a worker he had 7 days to return it. We realized that our dishwasher at home wasn't broken and only needed to have a latch tightened. He took the dishwasher back, still wrapped in plastic and within the 7 day time period. The owner was very rude and would not accept the dishwasher for return. She did say we could "donate" it back to her so she could sell it again. The concept is cool, re-use items so they don't end up in the dump. Workers were polite and apologetic...even the ones that helped my husband when he bought the appliance. I've been at Reuse Hawaii many times, I've donated and purchased items there before. However, today I had a real bad experience that will cease me even trying to go there ever again. Today I was looking at some used doors for a job we are doing and needed to communicate the measurements to one of the people working at the site, I made a cell phone call that lasted perhaps 3 minutes, in the middle of the call this absolutely angry lady comes and tells me that I can't use the phone she was absolutely rude and angry. I walked out of the warehouse thinking that it was ok to talk outside it and resumed my phone call...a few seconds later she came after me again and yelled and told me that the whole property and surroundings were a cell phone free area.. and told me that she was going to escort me out of the property....Are you kidding me....What construction warehouse has a no cell phone policy in this world...How can they think that they can do business like that....I could not believe it. I also could not believe that this lady was the boss as 2 of the employees later told me, one of them even mentioned that she is rude to everyone and did not know why they have such policy...I will never step a foot in that place. This is not a way to treat customers or to do business anywhere in the world. From a business point of view they should cater to the customers and meet their expectations, I'm still at a loss as of why there is a cell phone policy on a construction and materials warehouse.... read more

I just had a very unfortunate encounter with a very bad employee. I will give it to him that he started the conversation by calling me sir but when he made an outlandish suggestion of where I could go park my truck and small trailer which was completely out of the way I told him that you could come to me with a better suggestion then go park in a cul-de-sac next to a bunch of homeless people that are going to steal all the stuff off my truck which was carrying over $1000 worth of redwood I was going to donate. As I was backing my truck and trailer out of the area it was in I heard the employee tell all the other employees that I was a dumbs**t. When I got back out of my truck and decided now I need to speak to a manager nobody could seem to figure out who was the manager or was in charge there and while the girl that assumed a managerial role for the time being was trying to talk to me the guy was standing behind her throwing his arms up in the air like he wanted to fight me. She treated me like I was the one that was out of control where I was just frustrated in this employees persistence to get himself knocked on the ground while I was holding my cool the best I could. It seems the employees there have all found their little niche where they can be their own personal kings. From the rest of the reviews I feel this is not the first time. Too bad. I had a similar encounter with the lady Selena. Their credit card machine kicked back my transaction saying not approved so we paid cash. The next day I checked my credit card transactions and low and behold they also charged my credit card!!! When I called to complain Selena said she didn't have to listen to me and hung up, never called back and doesn't return phone calls. My wife and I hired Re-use Hawaii to "deconstruct"much of the 1940-era house where I grew up, all in preparation for a major renovation. You pay for the work, but can claim a tax deduction for all the recyclable materials that are recovered. You can also identify anything that you want to keep, and the Re-use Hawaii team will carefully gather it for you. I give their work very high marks. They were careful, organized, and efficient in dismantling a large portion of this old house. They worked hard to keep us informed of progress and didn't hesitate to ask for advice as questions arose. And in addition to the good work they did, we're left with the good feeling of having saved a ton of stuff from going into the land fill. If you're looking ahead to a partial or full demolition, definitely give Re-use Hawaii a good look. You won't regret using their services. read more

I just visited Re-Use. I walked around back, which is open to the public because it's the way to Geobunga. There are slabs of wood stacked at Re-Use. I took pictures of the pieces I am interested in and went to the counter to ask when the slabs will be available and the price. When I asked when available I was told, "I don't know." When I asked when someone may know when the slabs are available I was told, "I don't know." When I asked the approximate price I was told, "I don't know." I was pointed to the woman in charge and I asked her the same questions and received the same answers. I own a retail store. If I have things a client can see, but answer with "I don't know" when asked when they will be for sale or asked the approximate price I would expect those clients to walk out of my store. I told Re-Use I was there because I try to support that business and I enjoy being green, but also told Re-Use that it was making it hard for me to support. I walked out of Re-Use. The only thing I was offered was to sign up for the email notices. I asked how long I should expect to wait to hear about the slabs. Guess what the answer was! read more

Patrick in particular is a concern. I like this business but no more. Patrick made clear, that NO ONE at the store will help you. Buyers beware, the policy according to Patrick is you can only buy/take home if you can carry it yourself. Note, I called before driving from the Windward side as a friend had to bring his truck for me to pick up a couch and some matching pieces I bought. The manager said great, someone can help you, they are here. Then my friend and I drive over, arrive and I went to the front. Patrick grumpily asked for my receipt, then proceeded to ask me to lead him to the couch he sold me 2 days before, which I did. The cushions were missing. He said oh, this was already sold to someone else and they took the cushions. "I must not have seen the sticker." Ok, maybe, but why not apologize to me? I asked for a refund and he gave me a hard time. I rarely complain but this guy should not be in customer service. So is this a female thing, as in Patrick had a problem with me because he thought I couldn't lift my furniture or he didn't think to let me know what I bought was already sold? I was very excited when I heard about ReUse Hawaii at a building expo. We were planning to demolish our carport and wanted to use this company to take the carport apart so we can donate the wonderful redwood planks to their company. Turns out they charge an arm and a leg for this service. Homeowner gets nothing from using them other than the satisfaction of being able to donate and recycle building supplies. I guess if money is no objective, this would be a wonderful service to use. For the rest of us, though, Reuse Hawaii, should consider donating their services of taking apart old buildings if they want to take and sell the materials. I have not been to their warehouse, but one of my neighbors had picked up some patio tiles from there. read more

I really enjoy that they have a place like this on the island. I didn't specifically have anything in mind that I needed to buy, but they do have a wide range of items that you may need and for a good price! I picked up some tiles for a DIY project and loved the price on those. I will be back to pick up more. There were a lot of wood products and roofing items that I can remember. I found REUSE long, long ago when they were part of HIMEX (Hawaii Materials Exchange). They dissapeared during their search for a new home and then hit the big time with the new warehouse. I am a Realtor with a GREEN Designation. I refer my clients and their Contractor / Builder to REUSE at every opportunity. I recently renovated a bathroom tub surround using 18x18 honed travertine from REUSE. Hand picked pieces that cost $1.50 each vs $15 each from a box. Sweet! The surround looks awesome and the savings covered a large portion of the labor cost. Also recently went through 30 bags of 50lb ARDEX concrete leveling slip to prepare one of the many undulating concrete floors that you find in the 1970's condo buildings. Too many other projects to list here but I have saved thousands in materials costs. You never know what you will find when you drop by so check their inventory frequently. I recently visited to look for supplies for my new dance studio. A worker Sharon greeted me and I informed her they did not have anything on the floor I was looking for. She told me there was a recent delivery of supplies and would contact me when they were priced. She went above and beyond and not only contacted me/held items when they were ready to be sold but she but pulled other mirrors I needed. I got enough mirrors for my entire studio for under $100. Unbelievable! When we arrived to pay and pick them up they helped us load them into the flatbed. I will never do business here again! The entire staff was rude and offensive. Every time I attempted to interact with an employee I was made to feel I was interrupting and being imposing. The shop is disheveled and doesn't stock many items of use, sure there's a lot of stuff, but most of it should have ended up in a dumpster instead. Our church wanted to build a wall covering with lights as the backdrop for our stage. Went to Reuse Hawaii and was amazed of the material available. With a little hard work we put together (3) 4 foot wide by 8 ft high wooden slated walls and two (6) ft high by (4) ft walls. lumber cost less than $50. They came out looking awesome. We will be heading there again when we need materials read more
