Do it yourselfers paradise. Love the odd variety of woods, tiles, furniture, stains and other treasures. The ONLY thing I didn't like, was a majority of the wood sits outdoors and uncovered, and with the amount of rain the island gets, I feel it would rot quickly. We have gone to REUSE Hawaii several times and made small purchases. We studied the place many times and enjoyed finding all the treasures from older homes - windows, doors hardware, but never had the need for those items. Our family had an idea to build a MICRO HOME under our sons mindset and creative brain. Instead of buying costly, cheaply made products from our hardware outlets, his goal was to make an entire micro home all from mahogony wooden parts. We met an associate there by the name of KIANA who was extremely kind and helpful as well as patient and highly informative. She gave us a tour and even helped us select doors and windows that would best fit our needs. KIANA went the extra mile to tell us about all the specials and even gave us a discount on some other windows that just needed some love and attention and were worth far more than priced - the pricing is very fair if you understand wood and how things are made. KIANA and DAVE made the entire experience a cool experience and we spent close to $2K and got products, once cleaned up, glued and painted would be worth 4 times more easily! We will be purchasing more items from REUSE HAWAII for our home as well as our projects in the future! Nowadays its all about the style and grace of how employees engage with customers. Occasionally you can find something good here, but god forbid you need to speak to your contractor about it--the lady who runs the place will chase you off the property if she sees you using a cell phone. My advice: go on a Saturday when she isn't there, but if you need actual lumber in a usable quantity stick to a source other than this one. It's mostly junk. read more

Not too happy with my visit there today. I spent about a half hour rummaging through the wood bins and found two pieces of 1 x that I wanted to buy because the price was great. Once I got to the cash register I was told that it was poplar and that she would have to look up how much it would be and that it wasn't the price that was stated on the bin. I could then let her know if I still wanted it. Well the new price was ten times more than I planned on paying, so I walked out. I was frustrated that I spent all that time searching for something to buy only to be told that the price was wrong and here is the new price!! Went to Lowes and got brand new wood for cheaper than what she quoted me for the used wood. Yikes!!! They need to lower their prices!! read more

Cool stuff, crappy customer service. Brought my parents there to see if we could get some antique glass door knobs. Actually saw the door knobs on a previous visit. We walked in, no greeting or any other acknowledgement by two staff members hanging out by the cash register. After looking around for a bit, went up to the cash register and asked if they had any glass door knobs available. I guess I was interrupting their conversation because I was told briskly and an annoyed tone that the website is out of date and that if I want a more accurate inventory to visit their facebook page. I didn't ask about the website, I asked about glass door knobs. How hard is it to say, "Sorry, we currently don't have any in stock." Easy answer to a potential customers question. I actually prefer the non-helicopter approach to sales, but the clipped attitude to a basic question by their sales staff left me annoyed. read more

Well, it isn't Home Depot, or like any other shopping experience I can think of. No returns means you can't bring it back. I accept that and so can you, just keep it in mind. With Costco, Lowe's, and H.D. taking anything back, it is a bit of a reversal but the whole place is a bit of a reversal! Strolling through the warehouse, I get the same feeling I get from walking through the humane society with all the animals diverted from premature death wanting to be taken home. The items here are likewise diverted from the landfill to be adopted into another life. The material is fantastic and has SO much more feeling than a new product. Much of it is old stuff, some of it older than we will ever be, and deserves another life on the planet. You are challenged to make use of it which is not without some commitment. If you don't use it, it will be your issue to dispose of it! As other posers have mentioned, they don't take things back. With so much stuff coming in every day, they don't have the room! So think it through, I have had many successful projects from my findings, but not always. Do be aware of the old paint that may likely contain lead. Heavy metals are not good for anyone, especially pregnant people and kids. I have removed the paint and painted over it to limit releasing it. Do not sand it or plane it off, that just throws it everywhere. I have used a soy based remover from Wood Craft with great results. Sometime my eyes are bigger than my vehicle. Keep your friendships with truck owners solid! I have done well with a roof rack and have a favorite moving crew if I need them. They allow just 3 days for you to get your purchase off the site and they mean it. At some point it is considered abandoned and it is reclaimed with no refund to you! So be sure to have a plan in place when you buy it to get it to it's next life. (The commitment thing again.) It can take time, and frequent visits, for the universe to reveal it's treasures here. Be patient. Sometimes I find just what I didn't know I needed, other times I find nothing. The stock of materials is constantly changing so being there at the right time plays a role. You can call to see if an item is there, but the staff really doesn't have time to be your personal shopper, and let's face it, with a "no holding" policy, it could be snapped up before you get there, so just go there already and see for yourself. Customer service, well, remember it is a nonprofit. I rarely get the help I need at Home Depot or Lowe's for that matter and the few workers here have a big space to keep organized with no corporate guide plan to set the materials up with, so don't expect too much. Expensive things can get moved around and can be left in the cheap bin, that doesn't mean it will be at the cheap price! Make no assumptions till you get the final price at the check out. The staff all seem to love the Re-use concept and have the "warm fuzzy" feeling of doing a good thing for the planet. They are interested in what you are doing and often have suggestions to offer from personal experience or other customer's success, so make friends. They also know of items that just arrived on the floor and can show you alternatives you may not have thought of. I find the pricing goes both ways. Some are on the high end and on the low end in my opinion. Being that most of the material is not available outside the place, it can be hard to compare and easy to be subjective with. Don't bother to try and negotiate it, the very effort will cause a digging in of heels. Rather, just understand that the price, weather you agree with it or not, is what it is, and was decided on from several years of selling old stuff and the need for the place to stay in business. Being a N.P.O., I feel they are doing us, the island, and the planet a service and should charge what they feel they need sell it for. You don't have to agree, or buy it. If it is too high a price for you, then pass and let them sit on it till someone comes along who sees it as a bargain. If you DO pass, it will often not be there when you come back after changing your mind. This has happened to me more than once. So enjoy! It is a shopping experience like no other. It stirs the creative juices, challenges you, puts you in with like minded people, exposes you to history, and helps the planet. Try getting all that at any other shopping venue! read more

Made several shopping and browsing trips to Re-use. While the premise is a good one, I've found everything to be over priced and the workers unwilling to negotiate. In most cases, if you shop around you can almost do just as well purchasing retail. The place is a good source for items that are no longer made, but if you're looking for a bargin, chances are you'll be disappointed. read more

Fantastic! We wanted to be green and have the materials from our house reused, and that is exactly what Re-Use Hawaii does. Their demolition estimate was a bit higher than those of regular demolition companies, especially since they do not remove the slab, but the value of the donated materials is considered a charitable deduction, so in our case after taxes the net cost for their work PLUS hiring another company to demolish the slab should be less than 1/3 the cost of having a demolition company just do the whole job. It was fascinating to watch and took 13 work days instead of 3, but they cleaned up very well at the end of each day, and there was almost no dirt or dust. The company and all employees are super nice and very professional. The kept us in the loop and showed up on time every day, started when they said they would start and finish when they said they would finish. It is a great company to work with and a terrific way to keep the landfills less full! read more
