I still have outstanding work that needs to be completed, including a cleaning and crown replacement, and now one of the teeth they worked on is causing severe pain. At my initial appointment, they collected payment and told me they could complete all of the planned work in a single visit. Although I was surprised, I agreed. After completing work on two teeth, they instructed me to take a one-hour break. The break wasn't long enough to go home, and I couldn't eat because of the dental work, so I waited in my car. When I returned, they numbed me again, checked my mouth, and then asked if I could reschedule the rest of the treatment. When I tried to reschedule, they attempted to push the appointment out another two weeks despite the fact that I was already experiencing significant pain. I insisted on being seen sooner and was able to get an appointment the following week. At that appointment, they still weren't able to complete all the fillings as planned. Only part of the work was finished, requiring me to return for a third visit and miss even more work. While I was frustrated, I tried to be understanding. Now I've received an additional invoice for more than $500. When I contacted the office to resolve the issue, I was told that I had said my "card didn't work" and that I would call back. That never happened. What I actually said was that I didn't have any more time to spend waiting in the office because I needed to get back to work, and that they should call me to explain why there was an outstanding balance after they had already collected payment upfront. The billing process was confusing from the beginning. If staff are attempting to collect payment, they should be able to explain account balances and charges instead of requiring patients to wait for a treatment coordinator. They should also ensure that treatment estimates accurately reflect the work being performed and schedule patients appropriately if they cannot complete the procedures as promised. I am not someone who complains without offering solutions. This office could significantly improve the patient experience by implementing a few basic policies and procedures: Confirm before treatment whether all scheduled procedures can realistically be completed during the appointment. Provide explanations whenever treatment plans, timelines, or costs change especially at check in. Train front-desk and checkout staff to explain balances and payment discrepancies before requesting additional payment rather than having to wait for the treatment coordinator post appointment. Establish a policy that patients experiencing pain receive priority scheduling when follow-up treatment is needed, specifically when the dentist reschedules. Conduct a final billing review before collecting large upfront payments to reduce unexpected charges later. After three appointments, missed work, ongoing dental issues, severe pain, and now unexpected additional charges, I am extremely disappointed with my experience. Patients deserve transparency, accurate scheduling, and clear communication regarding both treatment and billing.

When we were ready for my son to get braces we made a few appointments for a consult with various doctors based on word of mouth. It was my son's decision since it was his mouth. You'll find places that have game rooms, a frozen yogurt machine, etc...all in the name of getting your business. What mattered to my son was his one on one relationship with the doctor that would essentially be in his mouth and making a life change for him. As soon as the consult was over a year ago...my son chose Dr. Jason Rice...none of those other frou-frou bells & whistles were important. My son has been seeing Dr. Rice for about a year now and making progress. Dr. Rice is always friendly and personable to us and my son. It makes a huge difference when the doctor has a good rapport with the patient and family. My son still has a few hurdles to get past and several months to go. But I would recommend Dr. Rice to anyone seeking an orthodontist. I would like to add that we've been "too" early to appointments and he always manages to fit us in when we expected to wait from our error. There are two offices for your convenience...one in Jacksonville and one in Ponte Vedra (Nocatee). The office staff is friendly for the most part. We've only had one slightly rude issue and that person we haven't seen in a long time. We actually look forward to catching up to a few of the staff members. After all, isn't it important to have a good relationship along with quality work? Especially when it comes to your mouth? Not that it matters, but there is free Wi-Fi in the office. Plus, the offices are very "homey" and the Nocatee location has an amazing view. TMI: Dr. Rice always wears crazy socks, so it's always interesting to see what he has on. Note: We do not have dental insurance, but we are veterans. Dr. Rice gave us a little discount since we do not have insurance. Plus, we are set up on a payment plan to spread it out so we don't notice it as much. Very helpful!

Called and talked to Kara, who was so kind a welcoming and they fit me in the same day to see what was going on. Everything from their lovely office, to their friendly staff, to their service was top notch. Kim, my dental assistant, quickly put me at ease and assured we'd address what the issue is as she took X-rays and made me comfortable. Dr. Haeussner came in and let me know everything looked good in the X-ray. He asked if I had been stressed lately (who hasn't!? But my job has been very stressful lately) and thought I may be grinding my teeth. He asked if I had also been experiencing headaches, which last week I had terrible headaches, so much so I got a Covid test just to be sure! He did a bite test, and even when I thought there is no way this pain is coming from grinding, he was sweet and did another one just to ease my concerns. He recommended a warm compress and anti-inflammatory. I could not believe this was causing this sort of pain, so I was so relieved to hear the news! I thought for sure I needed emergency filling or root canal. My dad is a dentist in Michigan and so this was my first experience outside of family. Dr. Haeussner assured me there were no major concerns and I appreciated his honest, sincere compassion with the situation. Funny enough, we laughed how my dad is also named Daniel, and I saw the Dr. Dan of St. Augustine. Anyone who is looking for a dentist, look no further!
