In the midst of strip-mall central, it's nice to find a place that's relatively unique and cozy like Recipes. The atmosphere is pleasant in a "mom-sweater" kind of way. Know what I mean? A mom sweater is a sweater that's plenty comfy, probably looks "acceptable," but isn't exactly the most fashionable thing in your wardrobe. You keep wearing it because it's just so darn comfortable, but you know it was probably designed with someone a good 10-20 years older than you in mind. If you think of Recipes as a "mom sweater" of restaurants, you'll get my drift. The place is comfortable enough -- particularly because of very sweet and helpful staff. The food is fairly good -- better than a standard coney breakfast. I liked the pepper pot frittata quite well. It and its accompanying potatoes were better than what I could make at home. However, they still weren't to level to really wow me and convince me to return. It does seem like a good place for families, though, including multi-generational get-togethers. Quite a few of the patrons were probably in that new-grandparents-but-not-the-Denny's-crowd demo. If looking for a decent breakfast or brunch in this area, this could be a fit. However, it isn't a place I'd consider worthy of a long drive/journey. read more

Well I hate to revamp my rating but I have had a problem the last 2 times there. In both instances I got the hummer sandwich with fries. In both cases they forgot the onion and the fries were cold. Today the server was better than the last time but no accommodation was made for the inconvenience of having my lunch date wait while I await my remade meal. I'm just getting sick of it. One time mistake, I can see that. Second time in a row, same mistake...? Someone needs to get a handle on the kitchen quality and customer experience. Oh and they've added "no camping" table tents. Taking a star off for that because it is so tacky I cannot ignore it. I know they want to turn tables but have some class. Good grief. read more

Waited and waited. Inept hostess kept seating parties of the same size ahead of us. Cramped, shoulder to shoulder and they mismanage traffic flow so people are literally standing over you as you are seated. Long wait time once seated. Did I suddenly fall through the floor and end up on 13 Mile and Dequindre? What is this doing next to pancakes and omelettes? (For those not in the know, this is a Vietnamese dish, and consists of marinated pork and egg rolls served over cold vermicelli noodles, vegetables, and fish sauce) Apparently, Recipes also serves a couple of...pan-Asian would be the best way to describe them...dishes at dinner, which sort of blows my mind away. It's like KFC serving ice cream, or Little Caesars serving lumpia. Anyhow, I only had my breakfast option, and it wasn't bad by any means, though not particularly memorable. But I really want to come back here at night -- maybe this will be the elusive best-in-Detroit Vietnamese restaurant that I've been looking for! read more

Possibly the worst eating atmosphere I've ever encountered in a restaurant. Showed up hungry and waited 30 minutes for a table. The dining area resembles a low-budget conference room, possibly a "before" shot from "Restaurant Impossible." The people at the next table were literally 1 foot away from me and my friend. They actually interrupted our conversation several times with small talk just because the closeness was so awkward. The waitress scrawled her name on a paper tablecloth, and proceeded to go on about the specials. I don't remember what I ordered, but I know I took at least two Xanax to help deal with the stress of being herded in like cattle at this nightmare of a restaurant. To be honest, I don't even remember the food - all I wanted to do was get the hell out of there. The atmosphere completely ruined my entire dining experience. Never again. We were looking for a place to grab breakfast and although Recipes doesn't take reservations for a small group, it was a pleasant way to start the day. Let me start this review by saying two out of the three diners in my group are vegetarians, myself included. Recipes does NOT have a lot of vegetarian options in terms of a bigger breakfast dish but plenty of small things you can order together. Between the three of us we had strawberry cheesecake french toast, an order of potatoes, a combination breakfast with french toast / egg whites / potatoes / bacon, and an order of sticky buns (English muffins with a cinnamon spread served with apples and cream cheese - fantastic!). All of us ate in peace and quiet as we sipped our cappuccinos, black coffee and waters and enjoyed fantastic service. I'd like to see Recipes incorporate scrambled tofu and other options in their menu for vegetarian diners. Yes, there are options but if you are a breakfast lover looking for way to satisfy your cravings, you may have a hard time if you don't eat eggs, fish or meat of any kind. This was my first time eating here and the food is really good. I had the Eggs Benedict, but it was much better then your average eggs Benedict. They grill the English muffin, the eggs were cooked perfectly, a soft, runny yoke, grilled piece of ham and topped with proper Hollandaise sauce. Definitely a place to try. read more

I've been going to Recipes since they opened in 2003. Let me clarify on what I mean by "going". In the first few years, I thought their breakfast was excellent and used to think of it as a go-to brunch spot. Then I thought it took a bit of a downturn... or I realized I wasn't really that into their menu; not sure which. So we stopped going for the most part. Been back a handful of times however, when other family members wanted to go. It has improved slightly i.e. back to solid during that time. They tried staying open for dinner a few years back and it didn't work out so they stopped serving dinner. Now they're back open for dinner: I believe Tuesday - Saturday 5 - 9 pm. You can order anything off the regular breakfast/lunch menu plus they have a short dinner menu consisting of crepes, Vietnamese-inspired entrees, and a couple of other items. Plus dessert. Which brings me to present day. Went for dinner tonight. I ordered the glazed salmon ($12). It was a decent-size piece of fish, expertly cooked, moist, and just slightly flavored. It was served on a bed of raw baby spinach (like a salad) drizzled with a tremendous soy/sweet vinaigrette. Two pieces of so-so garlic toast topped it off. Right-sized portion; plenty to eat, but no feeling "I shouldn't have eaten the whole thing" either. One of my companions had the Thai Chicken Noodle ($9) which was pasta, chicken and veggies in a peanut sauce. They thought it was excellent and once again a right-sized portion. Others ordered breakfast which were spot on. For dessert, we had a peanut chocolate mousse pie ($5). A little small, but nice presentation. Others liked it - wasn't quite my thing. Also ordered the apple spring rolls; think of them like a deep-fried apple pie with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with caramel. These were excellent although I think they put way too much whipped cream on the plate (for presentation purposes) - four massive globules. Though Fritata in Clawson would have to be my all time favorite brunch spot, this one takes a close 2nd. The atmosphere is nothing fancy. Though the place could use a small face lift, the vibe is laid back and casual. If you're a fan of the Mexican themed breakfast plates (as I am) I would strongly recommend the Ranchero or the Bandito. The eggs benedict are usaully right on point as well and hit the spot. A huge downfall for this place is the fact that you can't get a bloody marry. If they had their liquor license this place would have hit the five star for sure. read more

I think the Yelp description for 3 stars is a great way to describe it: A-OK. It feels like a place that is trying to be a little more upscale, but comes off as, I guess, a higher end diner. Think Fly Trap, but without the same execution. I came here with a group of 5 people on a Monday around 11 or so, as we wanted food but didn't want to stray too far from my friends house. Three of the people in our group had been before, I hadn't. I was kind of excited, as it was one of those places I was always curious. I ordered the Benedictine Omelette, while my friends had all ranges of different food. Eggs Benny and two other omelette I believe. I wasn't paying a ton of attention. The food itself was actually pretty good. For the price, you got a good sized meal and some delicious potatoes on the side. The food was quality, I'd say a solid 4 stars. The atmosphere and the service did leave something to be desired. Its hard to say that about the service, as there was nothing wrong with it, but she could've been more attentive. We had to ask for coffee and water refills once or two, but our food came out in a timely manner and she was fairly friendly. The atmosphere felt... off. For what the restaurant is, you'd expect better decor, more professional looking table covers, etc. And what Kristin said was true, out of the 8-10 tables there, only one was anywhere near our age. Overall, I will be coming back. They have some good food at decent, but not spectacular prices. This place was quite a disappointment. To start off, they serve weak coffee which puts a damper on your brunching experience. Upon the arrival of the food, the veggie Eggs Benedict even looked disappointed in itself. It consisted of overlooked eggs and watery spinach with an average tasting hollandaise sauce. The frittata pepper pot was pretending to be an omelet consisting of uncooked peppers and mushrooms with an overload of cheese. They happily remade the order with cooked vegetables but it still was an utter disappointment. The service was just fine but their food is something I'll pass on for the future. The seafood benedict with crab was done right. It wasn't K-rab, but the real deal (definately canned, but it's Michigan, so ya know, we take what we can get! The portions weren't made for an outrageously hungy person, which is welcome in my book. I don't dig leavin breakfast feeling like I won't have another meal 'til Tuesday. The service is attentive, and nice. This is a decent menu. I am a certified breakfast freak, and I have sampled all over metro detroit. My main gripe is the atmosphere. It's a little too fine dine-ish for me. In my opinion, if I can order breakfast, I should feel comfortable enough to roll out of bed and march in in jeans and a sweatshirt still bleary-eyed. The clean lines and open look of the place did not give an element of privacy and I suppose the clientele didn't help with this either (pressed shirt and tie types having power lunches..) They should take a page from Frittata in Clawson on how to make a place feel more Home-y without the use of booths. Food was good, I will be back when I'm in the area. Here's where I put it.. I've been here three times--First as a take-out and the other two two times as a dine-in customer. I can see the appeal of Recipes--They have very friendly waitresses that are very attentive, and I always see them catching up with regular customers. You get seated fairly quickly. They have a huge selection of food. The restaurant itself reminds of a Chinese restaurant when I first walked in (Maybe it was a Chinese restaurant before). They have big round tables for large families. I've tried the eggs benedict, the blanco primavera, the regular French toast, and one of their omelettes. All the food were good--I feel like the type of breakfast food they serve are things that you can make at home, no gimmicky ingredients, but I also feel like if I'm paying to eat breakfast, I also want to eat something different. Would I come here again? Probably--This is a good place to meet up for breakfast or brunch when you're eating with a group of people whom you're not too sure if they are adventurous eaters. Then, one day, we took our guests there and we were served frozen bagged strawberries on stale bread for the French Toast and Microwave Bacon as the sides for every plate! Came here for breakfast with my girlfriend. Staff and restaurant were great. Food was sub par at best. I ordered the Country Eggs Benedict, and she ordered the Meat-Lovers Skillet. While the eggs were poached well, the rest of the food tasted bland. Their fried chicken atop two biscuits reminded me of a McDonald's chicken nugget (not in a good way). Their in-house gravy was thin and had no definition. The hash browns on the side were most likely prepackaged frozen. Great little place for breakfast (at least the only meal that I got to enjoy here). From crisp white table cloth to fancy diner atmosphere feel this is a great little gem for breakfast if you are going to the mall or doing something in he area. I am not sure if it has a separate menu for non lunch meals, so I can only speak of the experience I had at breakfast. My order consisted of the 'CitySlicker omelet' and my gf had the 'Cinamon Swirl French Toast' which she really enjoyed. My omelet was very well prepared, eggs were great consistency, no lightly darkened areas that got more head, all evenly cooked and nicely laid out on the plate with cubed potato / fries / hash brown arrangement. I rate this place three stars based on my first impression. I have not returned for a second visit, but this is not due to a disappointing meal. I've had a few friends that eat here often. Their take when I asked was that it isn't going to 'wow' you, but it's going to be creative, and consistent on quality. I have yet to test that myself. I forget the name, but it had chorizo and other delicious items. It was covered in a layer of melted cheese, and topped with salsa and sour cream. Salsa seemed like standard issue GFS, but the Frittata itself was yum. I ordered a side of sausage links. These were massive, twice as thick as a standard sausage link you'd find at a Coney Island. Sorry for the poor description, should have taken a photo! They are amazing. Super delicious on the inside, a charred bark almost on the outside. Can you tell I like their sausage! I was also very excited that they carry sourdough bread. Maybe I don't eat breakfast out a lot, but the last place I could get sourdough bread was Cracker Barrel. It was toasted well, and heavy on butter not by request. I like it wet, but if you prefer dryer I would inform your server. Also the 'home-style' spuds on the side were done well. I tend to find home-style potatoes well done on the outside, and still mealy/undercooked on the inside. Why I go for hash browns always. These were very enjoyable, however. All in all, an enjoyable breakfast. I think this a great little spot for brunch. The food is priced on par with the quality & quantity for my first impression. One of the few brunch places in Troy. I loved coming here as I always feel at home. Even though there can sometimes be a wait, the food is definitely worth it. I also love that they give you crayons to draw on the paper clothes on the table. I've gotten their eggs benedict, crab thing, and salmon thing. All are very good. I love this place and have been here several times. Although I don't come too regularly, the staff always remembers me. The staff goes out of their way to personalize your service. And they seem genuinely happy to be working, that says a lot! Nothing on the menu is too unique but it always exceeds my expectations. Their plain pancakes are the best I've ever had. The restaurants name RECIPES really does speak true for this place. From reading over the menu I can see that they have taken the steps necessary to craft a menu that blends spices and ingredients in unique combinations that are a delight to eat. Their food seems to have a Southern/Country base with an Asian spin. Every item I have had is interesting and new to my taste-buds. The dining area is decorated simply and uncluttered. Mostly square tables that are easy to move around or combine for larger groups. Each table is covered with a white tablecloth and a white sheet of paper that is changed after each sitting. All of the tables have Real Live Roses in a vase! This fact alone tells me that they are doing well. I'm sure live roses would be the first thing to be done away with if business were tough. I have only been to Recipes for breakfast. Early morning there is plenty of seating and parking, but I have driven by later in the morning and at lunchtime to see a full parking lot and packed restaurant. Check their listing for hours. They are open for breakfast/lunch and then close for an hour or two allotting them time to transfer over to a dinner menu on a few days of the week. Prices are a little higher than at other restaurants, but you Do get what you pay for. They use quality ingredients and it tastes like they make their sauces in-house. Portions are large at Recipes and when eating alone I always bring home a little leftovers. Great place! Give 'em a try. read more

We had higher expectations for our first as we have always heard how great this place was supposed to be. My Husband ordered Oatmeal & Egg Whites, and I ordered the Crazy Greek Egg White Omelet. Portions were average. Service was average, but we were turned off by the fact that the staff were sitting at the front table eating and counting money. And a HUGE turn off was that the bathrooms were a complete mess. That makes me think about the staff that are working and handling food in the restaurant that have to share that space. I've heard a lot about Recipes so we decided to give it a try for breakfast on this wonderful MLK day. I wouldn't really say this place has a lot of personality - from the outside it looks like it would be sleek and modern inside, but the inside is made up of cheap square tables, those upholstered chairs that you see in funeral homes and a weird kind of salmon wall color. On the walls were some really cool pictures of downtown Detroit and other Michigan cities, but they looked out of place compared to the surrounding decor. It probably didn't help that the place was packed with old people - making it feel way more like an outing to a nursing home than a place to eat breakfast. (The line to use the bathroom was out of control!) Our waitress said that they were known for their eggs Benedict, the frittatas and the blackberry biscuits. I happen to LOVE blackberries so we ordered those. The biscuits themselves were delicious but I found the blackberry sauce on top of them overwhelmingly too sweet. I had the artichoke Benedict while my husband had the classic eggs Benedict. As a whole, the dish was good but nothing too amazing. The combination of the creamy avocado and artichoke was nice and it worked well with the basics of the dish but my English muffin was burned around the edge and I felt like the dish didn't have a lot of taste. For some one who loves breakfast as much as I do, I found this place to be disappointing. I'd be willing to try it again if there are some suggestions on what exactly to eat, but over all I wasn't impressed. read more

I have been wanting to eat here for quite some time now and today afforded me the opportunity to do so. It's been worth the wait! The menu is quite extensive, from oatmeal to omelets but my wife and I decided to have the Traditional and Seafood (crab or salmon) Benedict respectively. This was a party in your mouth from the first bite! The sides of warm cinnamon apple slices and cubed fried potatoes complimented everything. I had the California Eggs Benedict and it was Eggs Benedict with avocado and artichoke. It came with a side of fried potatoes and a side of cinnamon warm cooked apples. My boyfriend had the cinnamon swirl french toast and it was a good size portion and he really enjoyed it. For two glasses of fresh juice, our meal and his side of sausage, the price was only $24!
