Note: For recon only. Location: The reconstruction (recon) station is under the freeway right across the street from Market City Foodland. If you can remember back in the day, this was where the skateboarding half pipe used to be. Process: You'll see a big freeway pillar when you turn in. The line forms on the left side of the pillar (assuming you came in from the correct entrance). There is a chance no one is there waiting so just be patient. They are constantly walking in and out of the portable so they WILL get to you. Stand outside of your car to let them know you're waiting. I would only say step into the portable on your left if and only if no one is coming out. When they call you in, have your papers ready. This will include your driver's license, registration, safety, alignment papers (if applicable), and motor swap background check via HPD (if applicable). You will fill out your recon form which gives details about your vehicle registration. It will also inquire about mods on your car concerning engine, transmission, steering, brakes, exhaust, suspension, rims, frame, body, fenders, hood, trunk, and bumpers. Most of which you can just check off as "original" if they are not modified. You will have to open your hood for inspection. Make sure there are no external HID ballasts or other insecure parts. Examples would be securing your intake via bracket (even if it didn't come with one) and/or securing your battery with a tie-down. Some vehicles will be subject to a bounce test if suspension has been modified. Unusually stiff suspension (with almost no movement) will result in failure. Tint is also tested on side windows and windshield(s). Staff: I think their staff was really knowledgeable and friendly. I DID fail once with the first car I brought in, but they were able to tell me: 1. What's wrong. 2. How can I can fix it. 3. Where to go or call for the HPD motor inspection At first, I was a little worried. When I heard "recon" I just imagined a bunch of angry old guys who just hated these kids who drove in with a passion. I am easily intimidated, but to my surprise, they all seem really nice. They won't talk down on you and nothing they say is really out of reason. Don't be scared. If you haven't gone crazy with your mods, you'll be safe. In the end: If all is well, you will sign a card and get your sticker placed on your bumper/plate. Then you'll be on your merry way. If all is not well, you'll have to schedule another appointment before or after you fix the issues pointed out to you during the inspection. The next appointment will not cost extra if you come back within 90 days of original inspection. I have seen and heard people failing more than once. Don't be discouraged. Modification tips: Use a hose clamp for your intake (short ram only) if it is not secure with a bracket. Tighten it around your filter and bolt the extra strip of the clamp to your car. Seems like there is a lot of misinformation about their recon hours. The most recent updated hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am-10:30am and 12:00pm-3:15pm. Closed on state holidays & only walk-ins now. Went around 2pm and I was the only one there. The dude came out of the portable and asked me to pop my hood & roll up my windows to check my tint. Make sure to have your license, registration, exact cash $15, and alignment papers within 30 days. They'll ask you to fill out a form regarding your info and about your modifications (suspension, exhaust, steering, etc). The entire inspection took less than 15 minutes. Lot of Aloha! Friendly service and quick actions! When I arrived around 12:15 pm there were 5-vehicles in front of me, but I noticed the inspector walking directly towards me. I was greeted by a gentleman who questioned me about what I wanted service for? Simple informed him I needed a recon for dropping my vehicle. Anything else? My air intake and exhaust system. He requested for my alignment paperwork (make sure you have your alignment in the green and serviced within 30-days) and he thoroughly inspected my car. I was recommended to go here from Moped Garage (MG). The moped registration station is the portable closest to Hawaii Self-Storage. If you go to MG, they will prepare your registration and safety check. As of 2018, the cost of registration is $32.50 in **CASH** The service was very quick which was great for me bc I was running this errand during my lunch break. I was in there for about 20' and was able to walk away with my license plate in hand. Very good and speedy service! read more

Seems unnecessary to do this recon stuff esp. when I see a bunch of trucks and cars driving around without recon. I have spent about 2k trying to get my truck in spec... which has passed everywhere else in the world and barely has any mods. The fender flares seem ridiculous and the mud flaps? Really?! I went to Maui offroad and they extended my rubber fender flares down to the bottom of the mud flap... Anyways, the only up side is that the guy who works the office clearly answered all my questions. But that's about. Wonder where all this money is going... cash has to be exact change btw. read more

Prior to getting recon for my truck, I was a little worried about not passing. So I decided to call and see if I could get some info, the lady that answered wasn't the friendliest, but she gave me the info that I needed. I took my truck to get inspected about 7:45 and waited until 8 when they opened. Luckily I was the only one there. After they did their check, the lady asked me for $15 and had me fill out some paperwork. Once I was finished she gave me a yellow slip saying that I had 90 days to secure my battery with the proper tie down - not the Hawaii bungie cord action . I went back yesterday and there were 2 other trucks in front of me. Once 8:00 came around, two guys immediately came out of the office to check those trucks. While the second truck driver was filling out his paperwork, one of the workers (Willie)came over to check my truck. It was nice that he was multitasking and didn't just ignore me until he was finished with the guy in front. About 15 minutes later we were out of there with a recon sticker! The first worker was passing by and was nice enough to let me know that they were finishing up lunch and that someone would be out to assist me shortly. Wish I could give it lower. It's an absolute nightmare. I've been two times, both times I haven't been passed and have been told to add more things to my car that were not mentioned last time. The employees are rude and intentionally vague about what needs to be done for a pass. It all depends on who's working and apparently they don't communicate with each other. Recon Inspection Hawaii I think is the best thing that's is keeping safe cars on the streets! It's that extra step into keeping my sons truck legal, but I can say I do understand now why they do this!! They are very friendly and they didn't give us a hard time. We didn't pass it the first time, but we understood what we had to do to get his truck legal and for that I still give them 5 stars because that is there job!! Because I've been to gas stations just to get a regular safety check and they can be jerks about something so minor!! But this is something that's major and they were very nice about explaining so as a lady I could understand. I respect them for that!! Thank you for keeping our streets legal!! read more
