This review is solely for the red88 house fried rice. I literally have not gotten any other dish from this place besides this fried rice because it's that good. I got it for my bf and it's his fave too now! I get it with bbq pork and it's delicious. I'd say it's a good proportion of rice, meat, garnish, everything. It's so flavorful and I get a piece of pork with every bite. The dish is enough for me and my bf to share and I've only been here since COVID started so it's always been take out. So I just make an extra fried egg at home and it's perfect for the two of us. Also, the service has always been perfect--friendly and helpful staff. I have only been here three times and it's all been for takeout so I can't speak much more about service, but it was never more than a 15 minute wait for my food (but I also only order the one dish lol). 10/10 recommend the fried rice. read more

Needed a change of taste for dinner, so my buddy and I went to this place. I have to say that this place was amazing. The waiter was a very fun guy to talk to, and made my first experience here fun. We started with the sampler platter thingy. That was amazing. After that we had the "fresh roll" that was to die for. Next time I go there I'm gonna order 2 orders of them. Then our dinner came out., I ate the beef and noodle soup. It was full of flavor, I can not pin point what the flavors were cuz they were different every time. I LOVE RED 88, that's all I really have to say. I came here for my birthday dinner, and our server, John, gave us a really good experience. He handled a party of 10 like no problem. He also allowed me to upgrade my spin-the-wheel drink to an FML! I've never had a bad experience at Red. The food has always been amaze-balls. Tonight I got the spicy stir-fried ramen with BBQ pork, which was absolutely delicious. I like more spice, so I was happy to use their selection of chili sauces to make it just to my liking. I've been coming here ever since I was able to go to the bars--whether it's just a dinner spot or a Trinity night, Red 88 never fails to please the customer. read more

I don't know about the noodle but don't order the fried rice. The rice is all lumped together and is flavorless. I'm surprised that they have the confidence to charge $15 for this. The cook must have no idea what fried rice should look and taste like. It's way below my previous lowest expectation of how bad fried rice can ever be. It's so bad that I want Uncle Roger to review it. I never knew that I would get angry over some fried rice but here I am. The $8 fried rice across the street at Open Rice Kitchen is easily 10x better. Even I can cook 5x better. A $5 frozen pack of fried rice from Safeway or Trader Joe's is at least 2x better. The food was pretty good. I loved the crab wontons. I ordered the beef soup with udon noodles. I would've liked a better selection of veggies in that (even though I ordered extra (seasonal veggies) my daughter got the spicy pork noodles. She was disappointed because she likes very spicy things. I thought it was good (because I don't like very spicy things) that too could've had more veggies. I'm personally not a big fan of bok choy. 2.5 I'd say. The inside is somewhat tiny but they're open late. Good possibly for after drinks but I don't think I would go here without having some beforehand. The water refills were infrequent, and the whiskey selection leaves a lot to be desired. Prices are decent but the servings seem kinda on the small size for certain things. I had ordered the thai style wings and the spicy crispy eggplant with tofu. The amount of food was very little for the rice dish, and the actual amount of eggplant even less unfortunately. The sauce was cooked in slightly but the green beans were not cooked through, the tofu just had sauce on the top, and the eggplant felt like a side thought. Crunchy kinda, but the flavors just weren't there overall. The thai spicy wings weren't crispy in the least and the sauce wasn't memorable at all. What I did like was the little hot sauce containers since well... I used that thing for everything. Probably the one highlight. Depending on your time of visit can determine your service. We surely did not come for the late nite service. Instead, my sister and I visited Red 88 Noodle Bar around 3 PM on Friday. The place was pretty empty. A Thai woman greeted us right as we walked in. She brought us water almost immediately and asked for our appetizer order. Since we weren't ready, she gave us more time. We picked out 3 entrees with our Groupon (pay $10 for $20 purchasing power). The Veggie Soup (silver noodles, tofu, veggies & white cloud fungus) was my favorite. The vegan broth was nicely seasoned and full of flavor. Toward the end of my bowl, I added the Red88 hot sauce and it kicked it up another notch. We also ordered the Spicy Silver Noodle dish with ground pork, bean sprouts and green beans. It was pretty good. It was spicy but also had a tang to it. Since I also like wet pan fried flat noodles, I thought the Lamb Rad Nar would be good. This was also noted as a House favorite. Visually the dish disappointed me. It looked like a bowl of soup. We realized it was the Lamb Rad Nar, after we looked at each other in confusion and stuck the chopsticks in the dish to give it a whirl. The rice flat noodles were sunken to the bottom and there was way too much sauce. I took the dish home and will definitely pan fry some flat noodles and pour the sauce on to save the dish. Came in with a couple of my coworkers after hanging out since this was one of the places that were open late at night. I give them kudos for being open late, but when it comes to their food, it's blehhhh. I ordered their spicy ramen BBQ pork, and let me tell ya, don't order it! You're better of making some top ramen at home and adding Siracha and egg with it. This ramen was no where close to spicy, the broth tasted bland like water, the ramen itself did not taste fresh, and it just wasn't good to begin with. The presentation and the taste was as if you made it at home by a 12 year old. I was able to try their other foods such as their drunken pig fries, it was alright. Nothing too special. I'd say the food here hovers around the 3-star mark, but I'm tanking my score because of my last experience. I ordered my usual fried rice via DoorDash. Finished a couple of bites, before I started feeling strange. It felt like my skin was on fire and I got a wave of nausea. I spent the rest of the night completely sick to my stomach and I ended up having to go to urgent care. Turns out, I had food poisoning, courtesy of this fine establishment here. This restaurant seems to be a drinking place; however they were playing "coffee shop" like music. Now I don't mind that at all, because it is relaxing, but it just doesn't match the vibe of the restaurants lighting and decor. Most people don't want to drink to slow music either. I'm vegan, but was invited to dine here with friends. The food options are not so vegan-friendly, but the quality and service makes them deserving of 4 stars. I had the spicy crispy eggplant with tofu, which was pretty good for $9. The veggies were good, the eggplant was crispy, the sauce was flavorful, and the soft rice was delectable. The decor and seating was also pleasing for an 8 O'clock dinner. The Asian-Style fries are also good, except that it's not vegan, but you can at least omit the bacon. I have been a loyal Red 88 customer since I moved to Davis. I have been faithfully coming to outdoor dining here on the weekends. However, my experience yesterday was disturbing and I will never be returning. I came with my roommate and we ordered two AMF's, spring rolls, and fries. I saw the bartender drop the plastic cup on the floor as she was starting to make my drink and hover it over the trash as she attempted to throw it away. Then I saw a male worker whisper in her ear (TELLING HER NOT TO THROW THE CUP AWAY) and she rinsed the cup and continued making my drink. Then I approached her and asked for a new cup and she said "sorry about that" LOL. If you knew what you did was unsanitary and dangerous (during a pandemic) then I'm sure you are not sorry at all, just sorry you got caught. I am glad I paid attention to the bartender while she was making my drink because what I saw was UNSANITARY AND DISGUSTING especially during a pandemic when establishments should be more careful. Just remember if this is happening in front of customers ANYTHING can happen in the back/kitchen. Who knows if they drop spring rolls on the floor and just put them back on your plate and serve them. I hope losing customers was worth saving 45 cents for a plastic cup :D If you are a patron here, I would just advise you to watch as they are making your drinks because it seems like saving cents is more of a priority than cleanliness during a pandemic. Red 88 Noodle Bar - great little spot for happy hour and fries, but skip on the authentic Asian food experience. A couple of signs: Sign #1: Fries are a side dish. Never seen French fries as a bona fide side order in an Asian restaurant, not in these neck of the woods at least. Sign #2: We were the only ones there. Now, in a town like Davis where the locals would know the 411, you'd think this place would have some customers on a Sunday. Maybe it's because the locals know better? So you see where I'm going with this. Red 88 is great if you are into their happy hour, which ends at 5:00 pm. I noticed that pints were cheap during that time, but I don't recall the price! It's got that college-y vibe to it. A bar takes over the back of the restaurant, you have flat screen TVs showing the latest sports as well as rotating images of the dishes you can order. As for the food, husband got the duck fried rice ($6) which was admittedly good. But I've never met a duck dish I haven't liked. I got the tofu with wide rice noodles ($8). Now the problem with showing screen shots of how your order should look is that you expect it to look like that. Mine didn't look like that. Lacking the greens on top and having rice noodles overcooked so that they were turning to noodle pieces, I sent it back. Second time around, the noodles were intact, but the dish itself was lacking overall. Excellent service, spacious wooden booth seating, but if you are in the mood for authentic Thai/Asian-fusion, then this wouldn't fit your bill. Oh and it's CASH ONLY. My friends and I ordered the Thai boat noodle soup, spicy beef soup, and the fried rice to go. The fried rice was good, but the noodle soups were a huge disappointment and hopefully they were only this terrible because it was a takeout order. First of all, my friend and I ordered different soups, but they both pretty much looked and tasted exactly the same. The broth you can tell was full of MSG or some cheap broth from a can. Both our soups just came with a bunch of cheap MSG broth, rice noodles, and like 3 or 4 pieces of boiled super tough and chewy beef. I took a sip of my Thai boat noodle soup broth, and was appalled by this overwhelmingly disgusting sweet flavor. That's when I realized... they mixed heaps of hoisin sauce into the broth! As a viet person who has eaten pho their entire life, I can recognize hoisin sauce when I taste it. Now don't get me wrong, a lot of people add hoisin sauce to their pho, but this wasn't supposed to be pho, and you're not supposed to feel like you just swallowed a bunch of hoisin sauce mixed with water. Imagine swallowing some cheap MSG canned broth mixed with spoonfuls of hoisin sauce. I kid you not that is exactly what it tasted like and exactly what I got in my Thai boat noodle soup. My friends and I were thoroughly disappointed and wish we could've gotten our money back. I'm assuming our order was just not cared about since it was a takeout order because there's no way they're actually serving those soups in the restaurant to people and not getting complaints or people asking for a refund. I had a good opinion of this restaurant before I ordered takeout from them. Long story short, if you're going to get food from here, eat it at the restaurant, and if you're gonna get takeout, stay away from the noodle soups especially the thai boat noodle soup unless you want to waste your money and get a mouthful of MSG and hoisin sauce. We were lured into Red 88 Noodle Bar by the poster boasting the new "Super FML" cocktail... and as I was in a FML mood, in we went! We came for the drink- a punch-like take on the long island iced tea, served in a large pub glass- and stayed for the food. We opened with the veggie springs rolls- very good but careful with these, they have the same thermal effect as Hot Pockets (read: burn your tongue off). My friend enjoyed her Thai Barbeque Pork and I *loved* my Fried Eggs and Rice with bacon as the meat option (cuz it's the only option for me :D). All the food came with a side of delicious sweet chili sauce, which was conveninet because I wanted to smother everything with it! The staff was friendly, the venue was very pretty yet casual, the service was quick, the prices were reasonable, and everything we consumed was good. Raw chicken & stingy chefs ! Worst ending to my reminiscence. I came in here an hour ago hoping I would get a taste of the past and the quality of service from when I was in Davis. 1. Asian style fries - I asked for no onions, and they opted out of both onions AND chilli. I asked for chilli when I couldn't taste any & the server says he would come right now with it. 10 mins later, none. 20 mins later, none. So I walked up to the counter and asked for them again. Server came out and literally says, "so sorry, they (the chefs) got mad when I asked for some, so here..." Then handed me a sauce plate of 5 dinky pieces of chilli. Are u freaking kidding me? They got mad cause their customer asked for an ingredient they forgot to add in a dish? WOW! Unbelieveble. 2. Thai style wings - it was raw in the inside that we spit it back out. Eff-imy disgusting ! If I get sick, I know exactly who I'm reporting to FDA. 3. Fried eggs rice - soggy and mushy rice with no favor. I don't know about you all but I had a great first experience here. Came here to get some drinks on a Sunday around 10pm. This place had a decent amount of people for it being a Sunday. They have a good selection of cocktails. I'm more of a beer person but I was intrigued by their Hot Lips which is their version of a gummy bear. My boyfriend got their Happy Ending. Both very fruity and sweet and you could hardly taste the alcohol. These drinks are creepers though, I was feeling a little happy towards the middle of my drink. This place is perfect if you have the drunchies or want a decent meal. Had tons of noodle and soup dishes. I didn't get to try any but I'll be back for their duck egg noodle soup soon. I did order their drunken pig fries and man oh man those were tasty. Nice crispy french fries topped with their pulled pork, bacon, jalapeno sauce, ranch, and other goodness that I'm forgetting. Can't find Red 88 when it's late at night? Are you in front of some loud bar with music blasting and a long line? No, you're at Ket. Turn around and look for a guy being carried out of a small restaurant. See it? Yeah, that's Red 88. Open really late for people who are bar hopping, Red 88 has food and drinks for your night. The "FML" is their equivalent to Bernardo's "Wiki." Late night happy hours plus the option of receiving a free entrance ticket to Ket for spending $10 is the reason this place is packed. Service is great and they keep a clean bathroom (even with all the drunk people lining up to use it). read more

I love UOB and Ket is cool btw, they are all related on a management scale. Back to Red. If you want people breathing over your back waiting for you to finish a drink you bought with your money, then you'll love this place. You'll love it even more when they are giving you a countdown of 10 seconds and threatening you to take your shot or else they have to take it back. Why is that even a thing? Don't sell it to us if you're going to take it back. We came here for a friends' birthday during our pub crawl, and he had a little too much so he went outside. He wasn't allowed inside anymore because he "seems too drunk". What? Aren't we at a bar? The security and the waiter/waitress' have a sarcastic tone to what they are saying.. makes it kind of annoying to tolerate as a costumer. The food is very mediocre at best: the portions are small, and the little morsels that they serve you typically aren't even very tasty. The only dish that I'd actually recommend to someone would be their chicken ka-ree udon. What makes this dish is the broth. Just enough curry flavor without being overpowering so that you can still drink it like a soup and not feel gross. I like to add the dry roasted chili paste in little by little so that it changes the flavor profile of the soup. The chicken that it comes with is alright, just slightly dry pieces of chicken breast. The udon noodles could be softer and more tender. With that said, Red88 is still a fun place to go if you want something that is in between a regular dinner place and a bar.
