This place has excellent deserts!! Their pies are breathtaking when you walk inside the door! Their cinnamon rolls are to die for, a must have. There's always a buffet - breakfast, lunch, & dinner. You can order from menu anytime also. They have a big variety of entrees. My favorite is the chicken fried steak, my husbands is fried chicken livers & gizzards (you won't be able to eat them all). You might like to know that their mashed potatoes are the real thing too, no instant potatoes here. As for desert., we favor the coconut meringue pie. I really want to give these small restaurants 5 stars as I know it's hard to compete. BUT we waited to be seated with 5 other people seated in restaurant as 4 employees walked around us with the demeanor of "not my job". The waitress who actually waited on us was kind and competent. The wrap and spinach salad were very good. Cole slaw was different than usual but very good. Quaint atmosphere stops when the bathrooms are dirty. I'm suggesting a good steam cleaning. Horrible!!!! Don't order food off of the menu they just take it from the buffet which is soggy and cold! The servers have an attitude. Our server brought my toast to me and it was burnt... One of the best breakfast buffets I've ever been too, bacon crispy and meaty, pancakes fluffy, biscuits moist, gravy awesome, plus fresh fruit and eggs fried any way you want. Our server was nice and kept our drinks full. I had sweet tea which was refreshing and not too sweet. And just a few minute walk from the truck stop, if I'm ever back in town ill stop again . What a great pit stop for lunch that was!! Home cooking goodness!! I had the Hot Beef which was a plate piled with 2 slices of Texas toast, topped with a giant scoop of mashed potatoes, slices of roast beef, and everything was smothered in brown gravy. My husband had the Hot Pork Tenderloin plate. It was much the same but with a piece of hand-breaded pork tenderloin with white gravy and mashed potatoes. My daughter got the grilled cheese, I had a bite of it just to try it and even that was buttery-yummy goodness. I wish we lived closer I would love to get the lunch buffet ($10.95 for catfish pieces, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, variety of different steamed veggies) or just the fried chicken plate because the plates of chicken I saw were amazing. Prices were extremely reasonable. When we are out this way, we will for sure be coming back! read more

We took a wrong turn on our way back to Springfield on the last day of our vacation, and found this place thanks to Yelp. OMG is my best reaction to this awesome home cooking! I had the fried chicken & my husband had the pork chops - both were as perfectly prepared as though my grandmother had personally made them! The homemade rolls & honey butter, even the fresh beets on the salad bar - everything had more flavor than anywhere else I've eaten! From now on I'm bringing my out-of-town guests there to see what Ozarks cooking is supposed to be! Oh, and did I mention the homemade pies & cakes?! Y'all gotta try this for sure! read more

The Red Barn offers great food at reasonable prices. If you leave hungry, it's probably your own fault. Sandwiches are plenty big and come with a large helping of fries. The buffet has limited items but changes nightly and offers delicious choices. The soup and salad bar is kept fresh and the soups are out of this world. I would also recommend that you save room for the pies or cinnamon roll for dessert. All in all a great place to eat. I try to stop if I'm in Mt. Vernon. read more

Stopped in for the Saturday BBQ buffet, as we were traveling Route 66. I highly recommend this little restaurant. The salad bar is the best I've had in a long time. All of the food on the buffet was delicious and fresh, even mid-afternoon. Overall I was quite satisfied with my experience here. The service was prompt and everyone was courteous. The food was pretty good as well. The buffet was reasonably priced and although it looked somewhat small it actually had many options. I recommend any of their fresh fruits, pancakes, and cinnamon rolls. If you are thinking of trying out the new Red Barn Cafe & Hen House Bakery recently opened in Stockton, Missouri please read this before going. On Wednesday, April 24th, at around 7 pm (they are open until 9 pm) my family of four stopped by to enjoy a late dinner at the "three week new" restaurant. The sign at the entrance encouraged guests to seat themselves. We chose a corner table, immediately next to one of the four other occupied tables in the restaurant. For the next ten minutes we watched the wait staff drop off meals, refill drinks, and even bused a table clean when two of the original eleven diners left. At one point, two employees shared a quick conversation that ended in a laugh near the kitchen entrance in the dining area. No one had even bothered to greet us. The staff would glance in our general direction but shift their eyes away or down and become busy. After the first ten minutes passed, my husband flagged down a flustered employee to order our three waters and single soda. When he delivered the drinks, he could not even remember who ordered the soda. He went to leave; we stopped him to ask for menus. Ten minutes later, we got up to leave because no one came to take our order. We stopped to pay for our drinks but the young man said not to worry about paying. Around 8 pm, I decided to call the Mount Vernon location to leave a message for the owner. I wanted to let her know the service was poor, maybe she was unaware the third location she recently opened was being so poorly managed. I left a message for the owner, by name, to return my call. At this point, one would be able to brush off the poor service as a lack of training; a small hiccup of opening a new location in another county from the other two locations. However, my perspective of the business changed completely the following morning. My cell phone rang at 6:51 am on Thursday morning. The number was unfamiliar so I let it go to voicemail. Nothing good ever comes from early morning phone calls. I immediately listen to the voicemail. It was LEAH from the Red Barn Cafe returning my phone call. At 6:51 am. In the morning. LEAH, who wasn't even the owner of the Cafe. I decided to call her back. She answered on the first ring. She assured me she was the general manager and was returning the call on the behalf of the owner at (6:51 am in the morning!) I told her about our experience the night before. LEAH's response was so unexpected. Leah BERATED ME for sitting in the cafe for twenty minutes and only receiving our drinks! She accused my family of being too lazy to get up and flag someone down to take our food order. She did not like my calm but very direct reply to her accusation. First, when my family and I decide to eat out, we do not expect to chase/flag down wait staff to pester them about giving us drinks (we did though), menus (we had to ask for them) or to order our meals. No one should have to do any of these things at a family styled diner with servers. I can't think of a single other time anywhere in the Stockton area have any of the other restaurants ever expected this of their patrons. Second, a professional call should never, EVER, in any circumstances be returned, especially to an unknown individual at 6:51 am. Calls from strange numbers between 9 pm and 8 am typically are strictly bad news or an emergency. This was neither; it was however incredibly disrespectful to call my home at such an early hour. Let's not forget the fact, that the message wasn't even for LEAH but the owner! LEAH, the general manager for the chain, didn't like my opinions and hung up on me. I called back to the Mt. Vernon location at 6:54 am and AGAIN left a message for the owner, Shari Copenhaven, to return my call. Misty, who took the message, assured me HER MOTHER, Shari, would get the message. No return call has been received. That is okay because the situation became much clearer. Their management issues are not growing pains from opening this third location three weeks ago. LEAH's lack of professional conduct shows that she has a complete disregard for the concerns of actually managing the businesses she has been entrusted with. The Red Barn Cafe has poor service from "top management" at their main offices to the employees (clearly untrained and poorly managed) at the new Stockton, Missouri location. Maybe instead of berating potential patrons Leah should be spending more time ensuring the newly hired staffing at the brand new Stockton location has the opportunity to be properly trained. Shari should really set some firm guidelines on how her "managers" treat customers; especially her general manager. read more

OMG and ditto to all the great reviews. The bacon, sausage, the service. Everything was amazing! Here's the funny part. I brought one of their gynormous cinnamon rolls home for my hubby. Our very considerate server thoughtfully packaged it in a nice box that survived the plane ride. From the moment I came in the door my Labrador wouldn't leave the spot where the roll was set down. I bring treats home frequently but she has never zoned in so intently. All three of us shared it for breakfast this morning. Everyone is very happy and we are ALL still drooling... we now have this place as a favorite on our GPS and can't wait to return for more. read more

I'm a local, and I refuse to eat here. The pies/baked goods are worth picking up, but the resturant is a joke. They are poorly staffed up front, and in the kitchen, so it'll be a rare (or slow) day that you get served in a timely fashion. The food itself is mediocre at best. I don't think they use actual eggs for anything outside of the pies/baked goods. My daughter ordered 2 eggs as part of our last (and I mean, we'll not go there again) trip, and got two yellow blobs of egg flavored crap with cheese on top. None of the food was hot. Warm at best. I'd rather eat at McDonalds. I'm give this hole a zero if I could. read more

I rank my experience here somewhere around 3 1/2 stars. My boyfriend and I had the breakfast buffet and it was pretty good, as far as breakfast buffets go. We got here at around 10:00 and the buffet was served until 11:00. The food was pretty low and old on the buffet at first but they did bring out fresh biscuits, home fries and bacon pretty quick. I wish they had brought out fresh cinnamon rolls though, as the ones they did have were rock hard on the bottom and pretty much inedible. Everything that was fresh was good. Biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon and home fries. We didnt try the pancakes or waffles. I feel like if we'd ordered something fresh from the menu instead of getting the buffet that it would have been a lot better, but I guess that's pretty much always the case with buffets. I did see that they had HUGE cinnamon rolls for sale at the bakery and I was initially considering getting one to go, but after my experience with the hard cinnamon roll on the buffet I decided against paying $4 for one. Im sure they are probably great fresh, but not knowing how long they'd been in the display case I just couldn't bring myself to do it. They also had pies and slices of cake in the bakery that looked great. Overall it was a pretty good experience and next time im in town I'll probably go back again, maybe for lunch or to order something from the breakfast menu, instead of doing the buffet. read more

Stopped in to have breakfast with my son. We got there at 10:15 a.m. and were told lunch would not be available until 11 a.m. so we both had the breakfast bar which was $8 a piece . The scrambled eggs we're good the potatoes we're OK. The bacon was too salty and under cooked for my liking on the bar so I asked to have two pieces cooked a little more and they brought them back out completely burned. The biscuits we're hard as a rock and dry, the cinnamon roll could be used as a weapon if hit at someone's head, you couldn't even stab it with a fork! I'm not sure what the recipe is for their homemade gravy but I absolutely did not like it. The pastry and muffins were so dry that I literally could not swallow them. The apples we're OK but I have apples at home, I didn't go in to have an apple. When I explained to the waitress the problems I had with the food she said she would talk to the manager. The manager was not even decent enough to come out to the table and talk to me she sent the waitress back out to tell me she was going to take $2 off of my ticket. When I paid my check I let her know I would like to speak to the manager. The manager did come out she never did smile she was very unfriendly and unwilling to fix the problem, I asked her did she not mind that I was leaving as a very unhappy customer and she really didn't seem to care. Her explanation for all the problems with the food was that some of it had been sitting out since 5:30 a.m. and it was about to be taken down so they could set up lunch buffet. I asked her if the quality of the food goes down with time maybe the price should also, she didn't seem to like that. And result horrible food horrible customer service will never go back! read more

This place is phenomenal. Originally read about it in 417 magazine several months ago and have been a believe since the first time we went their for a meal. when my son was going back and forth from Mt Vernon to the dentist he would stop for the breakfast bar. Everyplace I go I judge by the Chicken Fried Steak. This one is superb and huge. I've yet to enjoy one that I didn't have to bring nearly half of it home for a late night snack. Bakery offerings are to die for. Cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, turnovers, pies and cakes and more. If you are passing by, I highly recommend you stop and visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

For 10.95 I got a clean and rather fresh salad bar, a most delicious hunk of bread with yum honey butter, a soup bar that has 4 diff kinds of soups and 3 diff kinds of bread and apple crisp (home made- not can). All this is all you can eat! My entree came with rice pilaf, 2 6ozpieces of chicken breast, baked potato, and green beans! The coffee was tasty fresh and strong! The service was liked being served by grandma (in a friendly way not slow lol). The atmosphere was down home hospitality style and they have home made baked goods!
