Horrible service! The empty lot should have been a clue to how bad this place is at dinner rush. I should have read the reviews before wasting my time with this dump. We walked in with no greeter then a guy came out the back and told us to sit where we like. I then had to go find a server after waiting a bit to get a drink and food order. We waited forty minutes with no food or sever in sight. At this point we decided to leave. Upon walking out we ran into the server and told her we were leaving. She didn't seem to care regardless. We are on our way from WNY to Tucson, Az and pull off I-44 in a town called Mt. Vernon, Mo. What a discovery! We had an awesome lunch at very reasonable prices. My wife got an angus cheese burger done perfectly with her fries cooked to a crispier texture. I had the salad/soup buffet. My bride was ecstatic and I was in "home cooked heaven." The highlights of the buffet were an incredible jalapeno corn bread, a vegetable beef soup that defies description, a pea salad that had a special taste and a very nice chili with great flavor. We added a carrot cake slice and apple crumb piece of pie "to go". Our waitress was the owners daughter and she was very nice to her customers from NY state. Went here based on reviews. Ordered chicken fried steak dinner and lemon pie. The steak was cooked until it was so dry it was not edible. Both it and the potatoes were soaked with gravy even though I asked for gravy on the side. Had I not been so disappointed in the chicken fry I could have overlooked the gravy. The potatoes were supposed to be real but had the texture of instant and the "creamed peas" tasted like they were creamed with water and corn starch. The salad bar was not bad and looked fresh. However, It was $10.99 wasted on the rest of the meal. The pie was pretty, piled high with meringue but was not very lemony. I wouldn't go back. Service was poor (being generous by saying that). My wife Ordered chicken and waffles. Waitress came back to say the waffle machine was broken. She changed her order. When our food came, i was told they were out of baked potatoes. I asked to replace it with curly fries. A little while later, another table, that ordered after I did, got their food with baked potatoes. The curly fries finally came out and were very undercooked. The waitress said it was her second day. Just ate at this little restaurant this past weekend. Had the chicken fried steak (YUM!) & mashed potatoes & butter beans. Salad bar & soup bar came with the meal & I treated myself to a small cup of their home made vegetable beef soup. My friend had their creamy, cheese potato soup & both were just delicious! We shared a cinnamon roll for the whole table because it was just huge! Delicious! Couldn't find room for desert & couldn't finish our meal because the portions were so large. Their fluffy, home made dinner rolls with honey butter really added a beautiful touch to the meal. Just a short drive from most of the major towns in Missouri & NW Arkansas. This place is great! Got pork chops, they were delicious. Green beans were great. I left with a to go box. Im stuffed & can't wait to try the huge cinnamon roll & strawberry/rhubarb pie. Did i mention the salad bar - tater salad, pea salad, broccoli salad, slaw & pickled beets. The salads did not come out of containers. Will for sure eat here again. Very nice waitress too. read more

Well. We stopped here on a cross country road trip and it was AMAZING! Sunday buffet with fried chicken, several other meats, all the sides for a country dinner, salad bar, rolls as big as your hand, and cobbler either ice cream for $9.25!! Went here for lunch today. Everything is made from scratch and you can definitely tell. Everything tastes great, buffet was fresh even though they were an hour from closing it down, salad bar was stocked with great options, and desserts were great. Everything used to be homemade, now it's frozen biscuits and bag gravy. All of the reviews are from the original owner and her menus with new management food has gone downhill fast. I don't know if they just don't know how good the food was or they've got someone feeding them bad information. The breakfast ham was a whole ham steak now it's a quarter of a slice. Meals are the same price but minus the soup and salad bar and heaven forbid you ask for another dinner roll ( who doesn't love red barns bread and honey butter? ) you can get one but they now charge you for the second. read more

I hate to leave bad reviews but I was not happy with this place. We should have been warned by the lack of people in there first. We went to the lunch buffet and grabbed the sandwich in aluminum foil. It turned out to be a tough barbecue pulled pork sandwich with the bun soaked and mushy on the bottom. I tried to dress it up with slaw but that didn't help. I grabbed some fried okra to be disappointed in the old season-less taste in them. Whatever was in the food I couldn't finish even half of it without having to run to their bathroom with a sick stomach. You would have thought I would have eaten haribo sugar free gummies (read their review on Amazon). I crippled back to our room and went to my emergency box that I pack and found relief in a little green pill. While taking my pill to my surprise my husband ,with an iron stomach, was in the bathroom with the same issues as I had had earlier. Thankful for the meds we didn't let this upset ruin the rest of our trip. Heed our warning... Do not go! The only thing positive were the employees who were very sweet. What a shame :-( read more

Fantastic place to eat for down-home cooking. Friendly staff and A TON of food for the price! I ate the catfish dinner and my wife had the Beef tips - which were not the typical beef tips - these things were grilled rib eye steak, very tender and absolutely fantastic. Looked like great dessert too, but we were too full to eat any more. Not the fanciest place in the world, but the food will not disappoint. read more

Would have given 4 or 5 stars is we ate in dining room I'm sure. We were traveling pulling our RV and there was no where to park so we just pulled on the shoulder and got take out. I had the chicken club. Defiantly a two handed sandwich. It was so big they had to close the carry out styrofoam box with a big tooth pick. The menu didn't list any mayo or sauce coming with the sandwich so I asked for their house sauce. It was a thick raspberry Vinegarett and was very good but hard to eat in the truck. The sandwich was a large grilled chicken breast with ham, turkey, bacon lettuce and tomato. I also had the Curley fries. They were fresh made, but soggy by the time I ate them. My husband Had the pork tenderloin sandwich and sweet potato fries. The breading on the tenderloin was delicious and the meat was Tendar and thick again if we had eaten in the restaurant I would give 5 stars. I guess because I asked for the house sauce for my club sandwich they forgot to put mayo in for the pork sandwich. Even without the mayo I have to say it was the best tasting breaded pork tenderloin I've tasted ( we shared our sandwiches) his sweet potato fries had good flavor, but we're also soggy. In summary, take the time to eat in. The staffed seemed very polite but made made mistakes ( no mayo and soggy fries) that affected the overall experience. If we make it back we will split a sandwich as the portions were huge! read more

I took my 97 year old father here for lunch. They were so considerate about the wheelchair and oxygen and made us feel welcome. The food was delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced. Was in town and needed a late lunch before heading over to Aurora. This was my 1st time @ the Red Barn and I am sure glad that I chose this eatery. I had the chicken quesadilla and it was very good and filling. The service was prompt and the atmosphere pleasant. Just what I was looking for. My server was accommodating, timely and sincere. A neat little place to check out! Their bakery items are pretty good! We bought two whole pies. One was strawberry and one was chocolate/peanut butter. The strawberry had whole berries and looked fabulous but it was a little too congealed for me. The chocolate peanut butter was the winner! It was fantastic! Not too much peanut butter and not too much chocolate. A good mix of both. Of course it was pretty sweet, but hey, it's a pie! It's supposed to be sweet! read more

The whipped mashed potatoes with white gravy, fried chicken, cobblers, ice cream, salad bar, HUGE rolls and homemade whipped butter. Everything was great and we will be back.
