I've been to this fusion joint several times in the past, and I always thought they were solid...but not exactly THE best Asian fusion in town. Well, I revisited them yesterday...and I was happily surprised with some changes. Despite being Korean-owned, they went more toward Japanese (less Korean), specializing more in sushi...with a huge sushi menu! Honestly, I was a bit skeptical (given that this seemed to be a Korean-owned business...I mean, they even play K-Pop overhead! However, I tried their "Magician Roll", and it was tremendous...as in Y-U-M!! Best of all, they were pretty generous with the toppings...namely, fish roe (which I love)! In other higher priced sushi restaurants, I've had much less satisfying sushi rolls with skimpy toppings of fish roe. Truly impressed with this sushi roll. I can't wait to go back and try other sushi rolls on their menu. I also tried their Shrimp Tempura...and though they were a tad heavily battered, they were super-crispy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I think they vamped up the furnishings as well (I could be wrong here?), but the place looked nicer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Another thing I love about this place is that it's open throughout the day...not with short, separate lunch and dinner hours. This is a rare thing with Japanese restaurants. Anyway, for once, I'm dropping 5 stars!

Sexy Salmon Roll - Add lemon

I've been coming to Sushiya Japan for over 10 years, and it absolutely deserves more than 4 stars on Yelp. As someone who has been to sushi restaurants all across the U.S., I can confidently say this place consistently hits the mark every single time. The sushi here is incredibly fresh, and the portion sizes for the price are unbeatable. Their ginger dressing on the house salad is hands down the best I've ever had at any sushi restaurant--it's that good! While I can't speak to the non-sushi dishes, this is easily one of the top sushi spots in Charlotte. Sushiya is hands down better than Yama and Sushi 101 in terms of flavor, freshness, and consistency, and it offers more variety and options than Co. They also have an app and offer delivery if you live in the area, which is a great convenience. I have never had any issues with the service; the owners even know us by name since we've been coming here for as long as I can remember. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dining here always feels welcoming, like visiting family.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Whether you're a sushi lover or just looking for an unforgettable dining experience, Sushiya Japan is the place to go. If you haven't been here yet, you're missing out on one of Charlotte's hidden gems! You have to try the sexy salmon roll with lemon on top or the drunken lobster!

Salmon collar (Sake Kama). I highly recommend.

Fabulous salmon collar. Cooked perfectly and the service was wonderful. The tempura is always perfect and enjoy the hot citrus tea, it's really lovely. One of our favorite places to visit. Also, my daughter loves the sushi rolls.

    Hibachi shrimp - Tiny portion
    Jenita M.

Expensive for no reason whatsoever. Hibachi shrimp was very skimpy. I read reviews just before my order but hoped someone in the area had good hibachi. Tiny portions as someone mentioned their meal could fit in their palm. $19 meal should have been $12-14. For $19 it should be double rice and doubled veggies. I was still hungry. The up side is the white sauce was more than enough. Restaurant was dark inside and service was ready to attend for your pickup.

View of our lunch choices. Everything was just delicious.

Stopped in for lunch . Menu has great variety and prices are good. We started with vegetable tempura. Followed by seaweed salad and house salad. Seriously the ginger dressing on house salad was sooooo good. Then we ordered a Drunken lobster roll and a Yakisoba Steak with noodles & vegetables. It was all just delicious. The entire meal was delicious. Service was excellent and I would say this is definitely a place to put in rotation!!! Two thumbs way up!

This restaurant has become a go to place for Sushi for our family. Every rolls have been delicious and I love the Chirashi here. Service is attentive most of the time.

Let's start with a good first. It's a nice interior, clean, restrooms, daily specials. Waitress was attentive and friendly. I enjoyed the Miso soup but the ginger salad dressing was too runny. I asked for extra wasabi and Sriracha and was very generous portions. Shrimp appetizer did not taste fresh and that became a theme as our meal progressed. Mixed vegetables had a funky taste and my roll was soggy. At least they had the tall Sapporo.

    Korean Beef Bulgogi
    Leila R.

Neat little find at the Arboretum! Fantastic bulgogi & decent sushi roll. Service was slow, but I think that was only because they were understaffed. Our food came out quickly once we were able to order. Bulgogi was a little pricey at $15.95, but did come w/a little soup and salad. Will come back and try their lunch specials as well as different items on their menu as everything looks delicious! Especially excited to try their Udon & Yakisoba noodles, as those are some of my fav dishes that are find to find!

Amazing food! Nice little spot tucked away in the Arboretum shopping center. Lots of options from sushi to noodle and rice dishes. Always have a few specials going as well!

We both had the Chicken Bento Boxes again...and we loved it. I've had Bento Boxes in dozens of Japanese restaurants, but this place offers such a perfect combination of items (everything we love!)...Tempura, Kaarage Chicken, Shumai, Seaweed Salad, Sushi Rolls, etc.etc. Plus, this bento box includes the salad and soup! Frankly, I wanna try other items on the menu, but I'm so addicted to this Bento Box, I just can't seem to tear away from it. My husband feels the same! Also tried their hot Sake...but think I prefer the cold version. BTW, I noticed some renovations. They now have darker Cherry Wood (?) flooring and cabinetry (behind the sushi station, that is). However, they still have some original light wood chairs and tables. Also, they separated some of the tables (Yay!)...so not as many "communal" tables like before. Anyway, think this is a good sign that this place plans to stay awhile longer!

Pretty good size shopping plaza and it's a standalone building. Don't have to walk thru the plaza dealing with people. Park and walk right in. For me, service is what made it just an OK experience. It was a little late for dinner but the restaurant was still open. I understand the side work for closing as I've been in the field before but if you have a table, it should be a focus on the guests not the other way around. There was a mix up on the bill and the annoyance on her face seemed as if she felt it was my fault. But she did fix the issue almost seeming begrudgingly. I'll also mention that I had to flag down other staff for refills, as well as the bill. And you know how it goes - one thing is off and it makes for a forgettable experience. But I will say that dinner was fine. See pics. Can't complain about prices or portions but when I was annoyed, I was just eating to eat. I don't know anyone out here whose tastes for Sushi/Sashimi aligns with mine so it's hard to say whether I'd go back or not. First, obviously I don't live there and second, more places I'd probably want to try before I go back for service like I experienced that night. But it's probably not likely

Location wise, this place is definitely a "sleeper" place just because it's tucked back in Stonecrest across from the movie theater. The dining room is cozy but there are booths and tables....
