I've been to this fusion joint several times in the past, and I always thought they were solid...but not exactly THE best Asian fusion in town. Well, I revisited them yesterday...and I was happily surprised with some changes. Despite being Korean-owned, they went more toward Japanese (less Korean), specializing more in sushi...with a huge sushi menu! Honestly, I was a bit skeptical (given that this seemed to be a Korean-owned business...I mean, they even play K-Pop overhead! However, I tried their "Magician Roll", and it was tremendous...as in Y-U-M!! Best of all, they were pretty generous with the toppings...namely, fish roe (which I love)! In other higher priced sushi restaurants, I've had much less satisfying sushi rolls with skimpy toppings of fish roe. Truly impressed with this sushi roll. I can't wait to go back and try other sushi rolls on their menu. I also tried their Shrimp Tempura...and though they were a tad heavily battered, they were super-crispy. I think they vamped up the furnishings as well (I could be wrong here?), but the place looked nicer. I've been coming to Sushiya Japan for over 10 years, and it absolutely deserves more than 4 stars on Yelp. As someone who has been to sushi restaurants all across the U.S., I can confidently say this place consistently hits the mark every single time. The sushi here is incredibly fresh, and the portion sizes for the price are unbeatable. Their ginger dressing on the house salad is hands down the best I've ever had at any sushi restaurant--it's that good! While I can't speak to the non-sushi dishes, this is easily one of the top sushi spots in Charlotte. Sushiya is hands down better than Yama and Sushi 101 in terms of flavor, freshness, and consistency, and it offers more variety and options than Co. They also have an app and offer delivery if you live in the area, which is a great convenience. I have never had any issues with the service; the owners even know us by name since we've been coming here for as long as I can remember. Dining here always feels welcoming, like visiting family. Previously had good to decent experience eating there. This time we had a pickup order and the sushi rolls were comically small. I really couldn't believe how small the specialty rolls were when we opened the bags. They were the size of the rolls you see at random all you can eat sushi lunch special. Would take 3 of the full specialty rolls to be a small entree (In fact there were 3 specialty rolls packed into a single, box the kind you get with grocery sushi (not the smallest size, but next size up). Nigiri were on the small size too. Spent well over $200 and family ended up hungry. After opening the bags which seemed undersized, I had to supplement the meal by frying up my own gyoza at home and making miso soup. I don't know if they make them differently for take out, but after this experience, I am never eating there again. I can understand having a bad night and sometimes things aren't perfect, but paying $14 and getting a miniaturized such roll means this is standard portion. Very disappointed. read more

Expensive for no reason whatsoever. Hibachi shrimp was very skimpy. I read reviews just before my order but hoped someone in the area had good hibachi. Tiny portions as someone mentioned their meal could fit in their palm. $19 meal should have been $12-14. For $19 it should be double rice and doubled veggies. I was still hungry. We have been coming here for years but we may be done after the last 2 experiences! Portions have gotten sooo much smaller. Do they think people don't notice? My sushi was practically 'mini-sized' and the side salad filled maybe 1/3 of the small bowl, enough for 3 or 4 bites. The salad used to fill the bowl and the sushi used to be much larger. The service was also poor- it took longer, they forgot some of my order and there was a lot of confusion with servers. The first time all this happened we thought it might be an off night but last night was the same. So disappointed. Is there new management? They will be losing us as customers. read more

Let's start with a good first. It's a nice interior, clean, restrooms, daily specials. Waitress was attentive and friendly. I enjoyed the Miso soup but the ginger salad dressing was too runny. I asked for extra wasabi and Sriracha and was very generous portions. Shrimp appetizer did not taste fresh and that became a theme as our meal progressed. Have been to this restaurant a 2-3 times over the last year. Food has been consistently good, and authentically prepared. However, stopped in for lunch today before work -- ordered the Katsudon lunch set, and proceeded to wait for around an hour. Two different members of the wait staff came by during that time to confirm what was ordered. Came out with the incorrect dish, still. Was then told it would be a "long time" until the correct dish could be prepared. Ended up leaving without eating, due to having already waited for an hour for a lunch special. Ended up with McDonald's drive-thru instead. Our food came out quickly once we were able to order. Bulgogi was a little pricey at $15.95, but did come w/a little soup and salad. Will come back and try their lunch specials as well as different items on their menu as everything looks delicious! We've been coming to Sushiya frequently for the past 5 years averaging once a month. Why, because the ambiance is ok, the sushi has always been fresh, portions have always been plentiful and the service/staff have always been attentive, understanding, prompt, curious, and all around a pleasure. The plate normally comes with a mountain of beef. Now, It was so scarce, that I could see the bottom of the skillet. I could fit the entire portion in the palm of my hand. (edit) I forgot to mention that my entre was $21 :0 Not worth it My daughter ordered an Alaska roll that came looking like she ordered a mini roll. The circumference was that of my thumb. She could easily fit 2 pieces in her mouth whereas before she struggled to fit one. My entre comes with a salad, rice, and soup. I didn't want to eat rice so I asked for extra salad. This is a plain salad with ginger dressing and management wouldn't allow it. Just ridiculous. I don't know if they're under new management or they were sold but we're done with them. Charlotte has no shortage of good sushi places. (the service staff is still amazing) read more

Wow! If you want sushi in Charlotte, come to Sushiya Japan! They had such an amazing selection to chose from on their menu! The waitress was awesome, and she even made a few recommendations. When we got there at 8pm on a Thursday, the place was packed. Literally. We got the last available table. I did not think it would be so busy, especially later on a weeknight. That just shows how good this place is! There were people of all ages and ethnicities, and it was such a fun crowd. The sushi came out relatively fast. You could tell it was super fresh, and my volcano was still very hot! (I wasn't expecting that as I shoved a whole piece into my mouth!) The service was great, and everyone was super nice. SO! DISAPPOINTED! Sushiya were you sold to a different owner? Cause this ain't you. I found this place years ago and always bragged about them being the best sushi in Charlotte. The rolls were huge and delicious! Fast forward to today, I ordered the Playboy Roll and the Texas roll. NEITHER were worth what they cost. The Playboy roll had a microscopic amount of roe. And both are much smaller than this place used to make them. This is Harris Teeter grade sushi at this point. It's a sad day for me. I loooovvve sushi and was craving some for lunch. My husband found Sushiya on yelp and we decided to give it a try. It's located in the arboretum shopping center, so it's convenient if you are running errands. Sushiya is a casual place with booth and table seating. It took us a while to get menus from our waitress. We ordered edamame, soup, and waters to start. Most Asian places have all of those out quickly and we had to wait a little while. Everything was delicious once it came out! We ordered the playboy roll, Sushiya roll, and Mt Fuji roll with light sauce. They came out quickly. All three rolls were unique, flavorful, and incredible. It was some of the best sushi I've had. My review would be 5 stars if the service was better. At the end it took a while to get our check and to get cashed out. I decided to have lunch here today because my usual go-to Asian joint Malaysia Kitchen is closed Mondays. What a pleasant surprise! Despite its strong Yelp reviews, I had somehow or a another missed this long standing Japanese grill. Maybe it's the tiny inconspicuous storefront but now that I know it's there, I'll be back. I went with the Bento box for about $11 and it was full of good stuff: Miso soup, 3 pieces of excellent sushi, salad with ginger dressing, tempura veggies, 2 fried dumplings, an ample portion hibachi chicken, fried rice and stir fried veggies. All was delicious but the chicken was not as hot as I would have preferred. The dining room was comfortable, pleasantly decorated  and somewhat unexpected as you walk in from the sidewalk. Sanitation score was high and everything was clean. Service was friendly and attentive. I look forward to returning. read more

The second roll i tried a piece and had to spit it out, because the crab was rancid, and the shell was also still in the sushi. She ended up just tossing it after we left. The service was fine, i just feel that the quality of the food was not up to par. The restaurant itself was clean though, so thats a plus, although the bare minimum. Underwhelmed. The sushi was sub-par. The only reason I was inclined to give it a go is because our main sushi spot is closed Tuesday's and we were craving it. We saw a 15% discount for first timers. We try to order through the website and they said the 15% discount is through "ChowNow" app. I download ChowNow, create an account and order. Still no 15% discount. Over it at this point and order anyway. Get a call saying that each spicy mayo and eel sauce ordered is an extra $1.00 and need to bring money to get the meal. If you eat the sauce in the restaurant it is no charge, but if you ask for it in an online order you are up charged for it. Makes NO SENSE... This is not a Sushiya issue, this is all sushi restaurants - give one sauce per speciality roll ordered. Stop charging $1.00 for $.05 cents of spicy mayo or eel sauce. I spent $80 on this meal for goodness sakes. Sushi was sub par. Fish pieces were average-below average size and average-below average flavour. Overall not impressed. Won't be back. read more

This is probably mine and my boyfriend's favorite sushi spot in Charlotte. Before covid, we would eat here all the time since it's also next to our favorite boba spot. Now with quarantine, I'm pleased to say it's still just as good for takeout. My go-to order is the Charlotte roll, and since I'm extra, I order a side of shrimp (yum yum) sauce to put on top. It's a great fried roll both dine-in and for takeout, surprisingly. My boyfriend's favorite is the Panther roll. He also likes trying different things though and he's never been disappointed. The staff here are really nice and attentive, and didn't even judge us that one time we decided to play Code Names duet to pass the time. We hadn't even finished the game before our food came out since they're also pretty quick. Even during quarantine, I get takeout here regularly so I'm really glad they're still open. I've done curbside once through an online order but I prefer to call restaurants directly to make sure they don't have to pay any fees. Craving sushi since this whole covid-19 crisis started and I haven't been able to get my sushi fix. They deliver within a 3 mile radius so I ordered 4 rolls. They're having a promo where the first order is 25% off. I ordered ahead online and they delivered right at the requested delivery time. Rolls were presented nicely in the container and were pretty decent. Not anything to rave about, but no complaints either.
