The sign on the building says "Smog Test and Repair." I went to who I presume is the owner and showed him what repairs were required. He was very abrupt and told me he could not do the repairs. I was not expecting him to work on my car at that moment, but I wanted to get some information as to cost and how long it would take. It seemed as if I were bothering him by asking him to do something that he advertises is part of his business. Owner Tie Sung is somewhat rude and the place is a mess. Wait times are drastically vary since he's all over the place. I waited over an hour because he was busy looking for paperwork for another customer. He charges $30 for smog check for certain customers. The guy in front of me was charged $30 and he didn't have cash so he was charged $31. And when the customer in front confirmed "it's $31, right?", Sung quickly shushed him hoping I wouldn't hear it. So when it was my turn I asked why there are different prices charged for smog check, he then tried to talk about difference between star and nom-star some checks being $32 and $42. I asked why was the customer in front charged $30/$31, he just ignored me. I just think he's shady for doing this. I don't mind paying a couple bucks more but just don't like being charged more than others for the same smog check. read more

Hi all, I have been a customer for Redbox auto since I came to Los Angeles from New Year on 2005. For over a decade, the owner Danny, has been very patient and friendly, honest to me, all the time. (no exception) But as I found just in recent one or two years, Danny has become a little bit more impatient, and not really (rude), as expressed by some of you. I think, people would just change, as they grow older and older. (May be, it is happening to myself also?) But I can put up with it, because, first of all, Danny is honest, and straight forward. And I still do not have to worry, Danny will over-charge me, for an unnecessary repair., etc. Danny deserves an overall good performance review, over the past 15 years, I have been going there. They're open from 0900-1730 and the place is a staffed with 3 dudes that are pretty friendly, especially the main guy Danny, who comes across as abrasive but in a friendly way. They'll be honest with you in what you do or do not need to repair and give you a fair estimate, unlike Jiffy Lube who often tries to convince you to do additional unnecessary repairs. This place is one of the better auto repair shops. Been going here for years, both my parents and I. They don't overcharge you and rip you off, like some of the other places my parents and I have gone to. It also helps if you speak Chinese, since the boss is Chinese. My car's radiator and cooler basically broke, so I had to go fix it, and my parents suggested this place, since they always go here for their car repairs. They immediately fixed and replaced the cooler and radiator and it was ready for pickup the next day. This other place I went to replaced my broken radiator with an old one from a broken car. Screw them. It was a reasonable price. $190 for the replacement. 5% charge for card, though. read more

I don't usually write reviews but my experience with redbox today really pushed me over the edge... I live literally 1 block from redbox and have been going there for oil changes and routine maintenances for the last 2 years. My past experiences have been average at best... 1 month ago, I took my girlfriends car to get an oil change. Everything seemed fine but I was wrong. Today my landlord tells me that our parking spots has a lot of oil leaks and wanted me to clean it up or he'll pay someone to clean it and I would have to pay. I checked my girlfriends car and it was leaking engine oil. I take the car back to redbox and talk to the owner about it and to see if he can fix it for me. He requested that I have the receipt or else he can't do anything for me and I would have to pay for the repairs. He clearly remembers me because I did a lot of other things besides oil change 1 month ago (Transmission oil change, brake pads and rotor change), yet he still demands for the receipt. Luckily, the receipt was still in the car. I'm starting to get annoyed here... We lift the car up and the engine oil is clearly leaking. The bolt was not completely screwed on. He acknowledges that this is unacceptable and talks to his employee that performed the oil change. He takes off the bolt and then tells me that it was because the bolt is not a stock bolt, that's why it didn't fit. He brings out a stock bolt and tells me I'd have to pay for them to replace the bolt and refill the oil. I'm getting fucking pissed off now... I've gotten oil changes from you before and this never happened before! Isn't it possible that your lazy employee lost my stock bolt when he was changing the oil and took some random bolt that fits and jammed it in there??! Or how bout your messy employee put the bolt with all his other bolts and when he was bolting it back in, he picked up the wrong sized bolt and forced it in??! He goes on to argue with me about its not their fault that I have an aftermarket bolt that doesn't fit and leaks oil and that I would have to pay for the stock bolt replacement. And then he starts saying that you can sue me for this but you will not win because you cant't prove that I'm responsible for switching the bolt. I'm furious now... Bottom line: the engine oil NEVER leaked until the last time I got the oil change here! I never replaced a fucking aftermarket bolt! You guys lost my stock bolt and switched it with a bolt that didn't fit that caused it to leak and now you want me to pay for the stock bolt that you lost and won't admit it? I didnt want to argue with this guy anymore so I ask him how much the bolt was. He said "$5.50". You are going to argue with me just for $5.50???! I didn't even go in there planning to sue them or anything! I just wanted them to fix the error and refill the oil so I can go home! He coulda just replaced the bolt fill my oil and I woulda been happy. It's $5.50 for the fucking bolt!! I didn't want to argue with this guy anymore so I said whatever just replace the bolt and fill the oil so I can get the fuck out of here... After finishing everything, he says it's fine just go (trying to be the bigger person). WTF!! I explained to him, I wasn't even coming here to sue you or anything. I didn't even mention to you about my landlord wanting me to clean up the oil leak. All I asked was to fix the problem that you caused. If he'd would just said, my bad, we'll replace the bolt for you and refill your oil at no charge, I would been fine with that and be content. But you had to fucking argue with me over $5.50 for the bolt and piss me off and then say it's fine just go??? If you guys continue to run your business this way, you will lose a lot customers. I was planning on bring my car there for a clutch job but fuck that. I'd rather pay a little more and drive a little further to get good service. Rolled in here unannounced and ungroomed on a busy Monday right before noon hoping and wishing they would fix my car's banshee brakes, do an oil change that was 10K+ miles overdue, and replace my black transmission fluid. Checked yelp for an affordable smog check, aka Cheap, and I found it. No bells or whistles here. Just straight to the point. The waiting room is tiny, only two chairs.....and the bathroom, well don't say I didn't warn you. Helpful tips, bring your dmv paper. They need to scan it. If you're coming for a STAR smog check its gonna cost you more but its still cheap. For $42, it's still cheaper than my last place and that's just what I paid for a regular check. I had to get a smog check done in order to complete my DMV renewal this year. This was my first time getting one done so I had NO CLUE what to do/where to go...so of course, I turned to Yelp! I pulled up to Red Box on a Monday afternoon and they finished my smog check in 25 minutes. It was only $28 too (pretty cheap according to other Yelpers who have shopped around). Be sure to bring the paper with the bar code on top that the DMV mails to you. Red Box scanned this bar code which let them send my smog check results electronically to the DMV so I didn't have to do anything on my end...easy peasy! :) read more

I was checking Yelp for the cheapest smog check place around Lincoln Heights and Alhambra, and stumbled upon this! Every other place I had checked ranged from $40 to $60, and I simply did not want to pay that much on top of DMV registration renewal. So glad I found Red Box. I pulled in around 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon, and one of the men approached me and asked what I needed. He got started on the smog check a minute or two later, after he wrapped up what he was previously working on. While he looked at my DMV paper and started the smog check, his partner (there were only them two working then) was working on something else. They seemed to be very productive and efficient with their time. Continuing this trend, as a few other customers rolled in, the two mechanics took care of each of their needs, while the first man also kept watch on my smog check. Customers came and went, which suggested to me that they must do their jobs pretty well, especially compared to the auto repair shop right next door, which did not gain any incoming customers for the 20 minutes I was at Red Box. In about 20 minutes, my smog check was done, and the mechanic assured me that he had sent the certification to the DMV, and told me what to do with my papers. Though I appreciated his speed, I couldn't help but notice that he was quite rude at some points... I think he speaks Mandarin (though, both he and his coworker speak perfectly good English), but sometimes, he would mutter angrily about something, and whenever he needed to walk by me, he wouldn't say "excuse me," but just grunted and walked. The one thing I was really impressed about the boss is that he will refer to you to other car auto repair, because he would not rip you off by fixing something he can not fix himself. Was recommended to come here for a smog and oil change. I arrived at 1:45pm on a Saturday and the guy said it will take 30 mins. Sounds good to me! I need to get my car to the tire shop after this to grt new tires. So it should work out perfectly. Wrong!It was a super hot day, 92 degrees and his waiting room had no air conditioning or any water. Luckily I had a drink that i brought from home. I saw him work on another car that came after mine so i waited til he was done. Then i asked him when was he going to work on mine since I was here 1st. He said ok it will be next. I wait and wait 1.5 hour passes by and still they haven't started. So at this point i'm dehydrated, hot and I tell him I'm going to take a walk to go buy a drink. He then blames his employee for not working on my car when i tell him i been waiting a really long time and yet no one started on my car and that i will be back... then he tries to rush me and tell me i need to get back within the hour because he has to close shop at 4pm. Umm so i walk to get a drink and come back and finally my car is done at 4:15pm. I will most likely not come back. I did not have time to go get tires at the tire shop afterwards. So my car was here for 2 hours when he told me it would take 30 mins. If i had known it would take so long i would've ubered my ass home and came back 2 hours later instead of waiting in his small hot waiting room for so long. The only reason why they received 2 stars is for the price. read more

Got my oil change quick and easy.

I came in today for a definite oil change, but also needed to check my brakes. My brakes had been shaky and making noises other than squeakiness. In 1 hour, they did my oil, changed transmission fluid, diagnosed that I needed front brake pads and rotars replaced, and explained the whole process of changing pads and rotars. They even pulled my car's make up on the computer and showed me the parts they were going to change and how they interacted with one another. SUPER detailed and I felt confident about their work. Very fast and efficient! Couldn't ask for more! Total came out to $180, which for all that they did (oil, brakes, rotars, service, and tax) I think was a reasonable rate! read more

I've been here several times to do minor repairs and smog tests for my 08 Infiniti G37 and its always been a positive experience. Danny, the main guy, comes off as a very personable guy due to his straightforward attitude but after a while you get used to it. I found out that by speaking mandarin to him, his attitude comes of as more welcoming whereas if you speak english with him, more rough. Everytime I brought my car here to do a smog test, he would always give me flack for being too low and unable to get inside the garage. I run aftermarket parts on my car and Danny has always been able to pass my smog test on a good price with no problem. I just recently replaced my rear brake pads here and I was given a good price for OEM parts and labor. I never really had any major issues with my car that required intensive repairs, but for yearly maintance and minor repairs, Danny will give you a good deal and honest answer if you really need to get it done. The only bad thing is they have a very small parking lot, so parking might be an issue. If the lot is full and you go in to have Danny take a look at your car, he'll probably tell you to bring it back another day when it's not as busy, which it will be. Overall, I would recommend this mechanic, Danny has been here for quite a long time and has extensive knowledge about cars. He will get the job done quickly and efficiently for you, while giving you a decent deal compared to other shops! read more

My check engine light came on. I went here to get it fixed since my hubby says that they are fair and decently priced. They only charge $10 to do the diagnostic to see why the check engine light is on. I paid $45 before somewhere else. Gah! I had been ripped off. (Both were credit to do the repairs, but still, why such a large price gap?) A sensor had to be replaced and I skated on by with only $140 in repairs for my 2002 RAV4! No upsell, nothing wrong with my radiator or whatever other parts frequently go wrong. Woohoo. Left my car there for the day and picked it up when it was ready. $22 (incl. tax) got me an oil change. Danny will also check and inflate tire pressure and do a visual check on your brakes to let you know how much you got left. They only accept cash which sucks when you are paying a big sum. I think its worth noting that this is a small shop and when they get busy it can be frustrating at times. I came on a Wednesday and there was practically no one there. I've driven by on weekends and its busy. For my Honda Accord, I got my front rotors rotated ($25) and front brake pads replaced ($90, OEM parts). Transmission fluid replaced for $45. If you have a more expensive brand (Lexus, Acura) expect to pay more for the parts. read more

Great place to get a smog check. I was trying to find a place to get a smog check near my work area so that I could get it done during my lunch. I called Red Box and Danny said they usually went to lunch around 12. He asked me what time I could get there and told him in about 5 minutes. He was nice enough to wait for me. When I got there I didn't get any BS from Danny. Usually mechanics try to take advantage of females by giving them estimates of things that they don't need. Danny was to the point. Completed the smog check and I was out the door. The smog check took no more than 20 minutes tops! It was great. The price of the smog check was $28 with certificate. The only down fall is that they only accept CASH. This was hard for me because I love my ATM card! Other than that, no problem. read more

Decent customer service but still a 5 Star Shop in my books. Plus you can't blame the people there since they have so many cars to inspect on a daily basis. But many great appreciation to the people that work here since they are very honest and will tell you in the face that you do not need an oil change when you clearly do not need an oil change. The boss, name Danny, might seem a little intimidating but if you listen to him, he is very knowledgeable in the automobile industry and will tell you directly what the problem could potentially be or if there is no problem at all. Most people come here for cheap smog checks, but I come here for the car repairs. I've been here 3-4 times in the past year, because my poor car has been getting old and needs its organs changed. I think I got new brake pads, rotors, oil, coolant, radiator, strut, mount (all at separate times, of course) for a total of less than $600. I may not know my cars, but I do know that it's a pretty good deal. If you tell them that you will pay cash, they give you a couple bucks off. Hey, something is better than nothing! read more

The light signalling low tire pressure came on in my car while I was at work so I spent my time calling around for quotes, searching yelp and calling dealers. Wondries Toyota on Main is HORRIBLE - they quoted me 37.99 for a tire patch! seriously, they are AWFUL; Longo Toyota quoted me 14.99 (I bought my car from longo, but it's a little far- but LONGO is the BEST). I called that 76 on valley near banh mi che cali (I HATE THAT PLACE - they totally rip you off), but my pops told me to go there since its only $10. However, since I hate that man immensely, i called red box and he said it would cost $8 if it could be patched. SCORE!!! Came in at 5pm and out in 10-15 minutes. Awesome! read more

The person is okay for basic things such as oil changes and smog checks, but not so great with harder tasks. There have been instances where he has changed the wrong sensors in my car and then charged me again to fix the real problem due to his negligence. There has also been incidences where he has quoted me a price when the car has been dropped off in the morning, then will call a few hours later to tell me the job is harder than he anticipated and will be charging me more money. He then tells me if I do not wish to continue the fix, to take my car somewhere else, effectively wasting my day. Do NOT take your car here if you wish to get something more complicated fixed. I would rather spend a bit more and have a professional work on it. read more
