Although i only go to someone who rents a chair, there's no reason to treat me like trash. You never know who people know. No place to sit , it was a cold day and someone almost took my jacket which resembled theirs , and you would not let me place mine somewhere else. I wanted to get a head start drying my hair since my person was washing someone , but I'm not allowed to use your dryers and you have no washing staff. I really felt like shit after spending 5 uncomfortable hours in your salon. Regardless of if I paid you or not , you have no right to treat me poorly. I can hang my coat wherever I want on a cold day to keep it safe and I can use your blow dryer when I'm freezing and dripping wet. A little kindness goes a long way. read more

I walked in with the idea of chopping off my hair. This is the longest I let it grow because I didn't trust anyone I ever tried since moving to NY. Julie did an amazing job! She took her time to really make my hair look great. I do have the same gripe as everyone else, they told me the price was going be $35-$37 but it was $70. Also, just FYI, tips are cash only. Hands down, she is the best hairstylist I've ever had... even comparing to all fancy and expensive world-class hair salons I've ever been to and their stylists. I had an extra day in New York when my flight was cancelled. Because I was due to do my roots and a trim once I got home, I decided to go to this place near my son's home. I got to Red Chair as a walk-in. They quickly accommodated me and Uri took care of me. He looked at my hair, saw what I needed, consulted with me, and LISTENED to what what to say. He showed me the colors and quickly applied it in my roots. It came out PERFECT! It blended perfectly with the color I already had. The. He trimmed my hair. He was very conservative with the scissors. He didn't cut away, just enough, just what I needed. Finally he blowed it out. A new me walked out! Julie is great and really knows what she's doing. She's able to objectively evaluate your hair in a way that you (I, at least) can't and expresses it well. She (we) put layers in on my first visit but they were looking pretty scraggly by my second, so she took them out but kept the angles. She's skilled at knowing what looks best with your face shape and hair type and cuts it that way for a mere $35. This is definitely the best haircut for the price I could have dreamed of. An added bonus is that she never pushes unwanted products, but will suggest things if you're open to it. read more

After walking past this salon a few times I finally gave it a try. I color my hair at home and get my hair trimmed at *gasp* Supercuts! I was going to be in a wedding and I wanted to add an extra "umpth" to my blonde hair by getting highlights put in. I have lived in the city for a year and my past colorist in California did my blonde so well, taught me the tricks of the trade, so I could save some money in the city. The only thing I could not master was her highlighting skills. I was so nervous to get my hair colored by someone new, and I was not disappointed. Red Chair was having a special: full highlights for 85 dollars. I couldn't pass it up. I was seen by Julie. She was great. Since I told her my hair had an all over process, she made sure to use gentle products for my highlights in fear that my hair may fall out. I do wish she had used a lighter color on the highlights though. I asked for platinum highlights and although the highlights do look very nice, they could have been a bit more lighter, so one star docked for that. Julie also talked me into getting my hair cut and she did a good job. The layers were a bit too choppy for my liking. But, I do not think I will be going back to Supercuts anymore for my haircuts. All in all, I was able to walk out with full highlights (85), a hair cut (35), and a blowout (although I was not asked if I wanted a full on blow-dry style, they still charged me 30 dollars for it anyways, so this is why I dock a star) for only 150 dollars, plus a generous tip to Julie. The rest of the staff is friendly, funny, and the salon atmosphere is the least bit pretentious. I will come back here again for highlights. read more

To be honest, I'm kind of mad i didn't know about this place sooner! I had an appointment yesterday with Julie. Usually, my hair is very plain and boring and all one length. So i went in for something different. I asked her to put in long layers and cut it in to a deep v shape. She did an amazing job. Hey, hair neurotics: read this review. I have fragile 2C hair and I used to be a hair neurotic. I thought my hair was special and got my first "curl" haircut when I was a senior in high school. I went back to the same person for eight years, and her prices slowly crept up, until HOLY SHIT i was paying 150 dollars before tip for my haircuts. I was going so infrequently that my hair only looked good about twice a year. In a desperate attempt to get rid of the damaged ends, I did the math: if I went to Red Chair, I could get 4 haircuts for the price of 1. Granted, the haircut would only look good straight, but with such frequent haircuts I could handle the damage from the straightener. So, promising myself that I would go at least every six weeks, I started going to Julie. Did it work? Let's just say I wear my hair curly still whenever I want to, I get my hair cut the second it looks damaged, and all for less money than I was spending before. Here's what you're not paying for when you go for a 35 dollar haircut instead of 150: Julie will not hide that she is cutting lots of hair. she will work quickly. she will not chat you up and flatter you artificially. She will probably be disgruntled if you disagree with how she recommends you have it cut. She will cut your layers by holding your hair straight up above your head. (I basically feel sheer terror every time this happens). But when she's done, it looks great, just like you hoped it would, and is far healthier from the regular cuts. And over the past year I've come to really like the chatter of the fellow who is dying the hair of the client next to me, and their russian asides to one another, like a big family (perhaps literally?). read more

So i woke- up this morning and was just feeling blah about my hair. The past salons I've been to in the city have been absolutely awful. So I did a yelp search of 'best curly hair salons' and Red Chair came- up. Now, many salons market that they are the best curly hair salons, but I was really pleased with the result of my shirt a- line bob. It felt good to go into a salon, have someone know what they're doing with your hair, and to not have to explain too much in depth. I really don't like getting my haircut because it's so curly and thick-- I honestly just have typical North African Arab hair. And it feels as if every time I go, I pay an arm and a leg (upwards of $70+) to have someone cut my hair incorrectly or too short; not to mention those that completely ignore important things such as cowlicks. Julia did a really, really great job cutting my hair, and was incredibly intuitive in her work. And it cost $40 for a wash, cut, and style (not including tip). Went back again and was told that Maria (who did my highlights before) didnt work there anymore). Reasons sighted: Lack of license, attitude problems etc etc. Got an appointment with Julie and she did my hair cut. She also told me she was fixing my hair from Maria's hair cut. Also pointed out that my highlights (that Maria did) needed to be retouched since they were uneven. I should have not gone back when I heard all that, but Yuri told me they will fix my highlights. So, sure enough, when I decided to get the highlights fixed, I made an appointment with Yuri. Must say, I am glad that I did. He didnt only do a good job with my highlights, but also seemed like he care for his customers. It depends who you get your appointment with, but I will definitely recommend Yuri for both his attitude towards the customer and his work. He is very patient and answers all the question. read more

I fell in love with this place at first visit because you don't have to sacrifice quality for price. A cut and single-process color costs less than I used to pay for a trim at the ritzy Chelsea salon I used to frequent. My hair stylist was Uri, the owner of the place. He is incredibly thorough, polite, precise and talented. I cannot recommend him enough. The color: I was a little hesitant to try a new place for coloring because I've had some bad, overpriced dye jobs in the past. I came in to get rid of some brassy highlights I got convinced into by a very shady hair stylist at another salon. I wanted to go back to my naturally black hair but didn't want the "I just died my hair black and it almost looks blue" look. I wanted something natural and that is exactly what I got. Uri was also kind enough not to charge me his full rate for coloring, because not every area of my hair needed to be colored, and to me this speaks volumes about him and his business. He doesn't live to rip people off, but rather to provide a quality service. The cut: I went in for the seemingly ubiquitous lob (long bob), and what can I say - he nailed it. The trick for lobs is texturizing, so that you don't get tons of volume at the ends, and he did it to perfection. If you're looking for a professional-yet-affordable hair salon in the Upper East Side, this is your spot. read more

My $36 hair cut cost $65. It was a good hair cut. However, for $65 I could go a salon that's less like a European night club, where they greet you at the door. Also, they need to invest in some new red chairs in the waiting area. Otherwise they need to change the name to Gray Chair Salon. Cuts are good. I want to stress that.
