This is a solid pakistani restaurant in Northridge/Reseda area, but you could do better. The chicken tikka masala tasted good, but didn't wow me. The nihari had a very good flavor, but could have been a bit spicier in my opinion. Also, avoid the Shami kabob, it's not very good. The portions were also pretty small. I got takeout, though, so perhaps they're more generous with the portions if you sit down and eat there. I'm not normally one to complain like this, but I must say that while this place was decent, and the prices aren't bad, it's not a place I would actively reccomend or be going back to all that often. Overall a nice restaurant. There Chicken Biryani was used to be good but now it's tending more towards spicy rice. Don't order biryani in Monday as its relatively of inferior quality. The NIHARI (A curry dish of Beef shang) which is a signature Pakistani dish is based on the formula of Qorma (Another Curry dish) so if you are not a Pakistani you'll have no idea of what you are eating and will be robbed of eating a great Pakistani delicacy. The biggest problem according to me is their use of spices. As there is probably no traditional Pakistani Chef in the restaurant, they are making spicy dishes more spicy which is dangerous for your health. The naan was good. The rice tasted like rice. That's about all the nice things I can say about this place. Girlfriend ordered the Shahi Paneer and I got the Chicken Tikka Masala (what else?) Other reviews weren't kidding. The Trader Joe's frozen Chicken Tikka Masala had more flavor than this. The Masala sauce just.. tasted like a blob of cream. No tomato, no nothing. Hugely disappointed. I live in Granada hills. There are a lot of B and C level restaurants. In sea of mediocrity Red chili is an amazing oasis of spectacularity. It is the best "Indian" food in LA. Was driving back to LA from up north and thinking about getting something to eat as we drove through the valley. Remembered eating at Red Chili Halal when going to see a dance performance at CSUN earlier in the year. Thought my husband who is from Kerela would enjoy. We were not disappointed. Being adventuresome eaters we decided on goat and lamb. We had the lamb kabsa which is an arabic version of biriyani. Huge plate of fluffy flavored long grain rice topped with pungent red onion embedded with picant pieces of lamb. We also had goat nihari which was tender melt in your mouth goat in a rich gravy. The garlic naan was perfect for sopping up the gravy. Strong chai tea finished our meal. Highly recommend this place. read more

Ive been trying to find a replacement for the transcendent ZamZam for Pakistani food in LA. Since I live in NOHO where good indian food is not very close, I decided to drive to Northridge to check out Red Chili. Its a very simple looking place. It has quite a large menu. I ordered the Red Chili BBQ combo which included 1 chicken kebob, 1 beef kebob, chicken tikka and chicken tandoor. The kebobs were nice and spicy. Typical Pakistani "rocketfuel" :) The chicken tikka was good, but not ZAMZAM. It was white meat(which Im not into) so it was good as it was going to get. The Tandoori was wonderful and tender(Leg and Thigh) and had that really nice kick. I also ordered some Lamb Biryani (HUGE! most was put in the go box)which was very good. I kind of wished they had Goat available. It would have made a more concise comparison. The food prices are average for an indian/pakistani restaurant. Its really not a good place for one person to grab a quick combo. This is more of a Family/Group restaurant where everyone can share, and the prices would amortize better. The service is decent, and it took a bit to make the food,so I assumed it was made from scratch. I would say this is a good place to get authentic Pakistani food in the Valley if you dont want to go over the hill. I would still recommend eating with multiple people, its not a place for a single person to get a "Deal". Until ZamZam reopens, I dont think any place can really compare. They had a unique situation of having volume for many consistent customers(mosque next door) and a limited menu. Its also unfair to compare, as more well-rounded restaurants such as Red Chili has more variety. Ill be sure to come back, to try the other dishes with my friends. PS there is an Indian Sweets and Spices next door. Get some cheap indian desserts after the hot meal there. And you can grab some cheap veggie curries if you only decided to eat meat next door. read more

I'll update this as I go because it's the best Indian place in my area, but I have a few qualms. The restaurant itself is terrible in terms of decor. It's all hard floors, hard chairs and nothing to make it comfortable or inviting. And in the winter, NO HEAT! In terms of food, it's good. Not great. Good. The sauces are tasty, but a little thin and a little americanized. The lamb could be better. The samosas are yummy, but the pastry is crispy like it's been deep fried. Rice is fantastic! I'd seriously go and just buy rice. Naan is pretty good, fluffy and hot, but again, nothing to write home about. Overall it's not bad. But I hope they get it together, redecorate and step up their cooking. read more

Their mild food is little spicy so they offer me yogurt ( with greens) and rice pudding without charging me, the pudding was amazing!!!!! Very friendly people and huge food proportion. if someone likes spicy food this is a place to go:) read more

I haven't had Indian food this unbelievably great in my entire life. (I've had a lot of valley food) Nothing quite compares. I'm so glad I found this place. Our waitress is extremely sweet and explained the menu to us in more detail than most would. I can't stress enough how AMAZING this food was. The portions were very large and we are taking half our meals home with us. The rice is minimum $5 but it was loaded with shredded chicken and fantastic spices. Ordered food for lunch, used delivery service... So I'm not sure how the ambiance is inside of the actual restaurant, but I must say the food was delicious! Price was pretty average for a meal. Amazing food! Ate here today and was very pleased. Its within walking distance from CSUN, and I am glad I discovered it before I completed my degree. I had Garlic Naan (enough garlic to ward off a vampire... aka amazing), lamb curry, and goat biryani (goat meat with seasoned rice). The lamb curry came in a thick sauce, which was a great addition to the goat biryani, which was great (especially when hot/fresh). They also have a tasty raita like yogurt sauce. The ingredients here were very high quality, fresh (as far as I could tell), and TASTY. The spiciness was spot on.... Not too bland and not too spicy. Although it is in a crummy Parthenia Street strip mall, the location actually doesn't seem too bad. They recently moved to a vacant unit in the strip mall that is right on the sidewalk, and it was nice to people watch and see some street trees right outside of the window. The only negatives: was not too fond of the Paki/Indian comedy on the TV screen, nor the lack of beer. read more

The lamb vindaloo barely registered on my taste buds (it may have come from Costco) and was served with no rice o.O I am also usually suspicious of restaurants that demand the tip be paid in cash if you paying the bill with a credit card. I've been looking for authentic casual Indian/Pakistani food in the valley for some time and finally found this place. Ambiance: It's a casual place in a very normal-looking shopping center with an Indian market next door. There is some outdoor seating with a view of the parking lot, a TV, and some small woodwork decorations at the entrance, but it's not anywhere fancy. It seemed like a lot of the Food: I tried some curries, some of their sandwich rolls, gulab jaman, and chai. Everything was done well, flavorful, and appropriately spicy. I especially liked their shahi paneer and channa masala. The naans are great too. The prices are very reasonable. Service: They only had two servers for a pretty large space who also doubled as busboys and cashiers so you might have to catch their attention to get service, but despite how busy they were, they were very friendly and efficient. read more

Environment is low key, warm, and service is friendly. Groups of families and younger men enjoying their food. I had ordered food to go and waited just a few minutes upon my arrival to pick it up. Tandoori chicken: perfect tenderness and flavor. Ordered bone in; enough for two to share if other foods are also ordered. Eggplant (baarg): delicious, but oily (why don't they drain it??) Garlic naan: cold and chewy by when I reached home 1/2 mile away -- not surprising as it was not the last thing prepared, but the first (seemingly.) The flavor wasn't impressive so much as the chewiness. Disappointing. Veggie dishes and rice: delicious. If you don't often eat Pakistani or Indian food and aren't sure how spicy it is, I ordered all of my food "mild" and it was still (for me and my partner) a bit spicy. I'd likely enjoy it more if I had eaten it there...at least the naan would have more likely been hot and flavorful vs. chewy and cold. Waaay more expensive than India's Sweets next door, but if you want meat, that's what you gotta do: pay more. Okay, so I've been a regular here for years. The food is unpredictable - it can be amazing one day but the same dish can be blah (or even blech) the next, especially if you're picking up. However, when they are on the ball, the food can be very, very good. On food alone, I would probably rank them at three and a half stars, taking a star and a half off because of the unpredictability. The bigger issue with this place is their complete disregard for their customers - on numerous occasions, I have seen the owner (or maybe he's the manager) and his buddies smoking not two feet away from the entrance. Every time someone walks in, wafts of smoke would blow into the restaurant. And this isn't a quick smoke break either, they are in the sitting area in front of the entrance for hours just hanging out puffing away. Wth gentlemen? read more
