Not the best Northern Indian I've had in my life but hands down the best I've found in the City. Complex flavors and every seperate dish and side hit the right note. I LOVE Red Chilli. I decided to try it out after telling a Nepalese coworker that it had opened. He, of course, had to come check it out. Since then, I've been back multiple times. As you know, lot of these indian food tends to be very oily and most of the time givee you heart burn but i must say this place is an exception. If ur a "eat healthy"freak then this place is heaven . If u guys know it or not but this resturant also serve authentic Nepali food ( thali ). Try their Chicken chilli and mixed vegetable( Super duber fresh). I ordered food from here thinking it would be how other bay area Nepalese Restaurants are. To my horror, the food smelled pretty yucky and when I decided to eat it, It tasted just plain weird. Ordered jhaneko saag (sautéed mustard greens) and vegetable momo. It was my first time with Nepalese food, and it was pleasantly lighter and brighter than Indian flavors. Also ordered bengan bartha (eggplant and potatoes), and naan. All delicious! The Indian dishes did seem less oily than versions I've had elsewhere, as advertised. Called in at 7 pm, place said they were busy and could seat us at 745. We come at 740, they said 10 more minutes. We told them we would be outside. We come back into the store as they are setting up a table for 7, and they have the Audacity to sit a table of 4 on our table of 7, and proceed to tell us that they "looked for us" (note: we were inside the entire time). And so they say the table that was meant for us because they people were Indian and we were white. The worst service I've ever experienced at w restaurant in my life. Absolutely total prejudice. This one block may have the most cheap good eats in all SF. Red Chili, along with Tselogs and Shalimar, anchor an otherwise not very appealing stretch of Jones St in the Tenderloin. Red Chili is a simple, plain little restaurant that puts its efforts where they should go--in the food. The naans are exquisite. The curries, which they can crank up or down heat-wise to your taste, are superb. And the prices are uber--reasonable. Well worth a visit, and if you live nearby, well worth making it a regular stop. read more

Came here for the first time since I hadn't had Nepali food in a long time.. At first glance, it seem like the vegetarian dishes were the only once with authentic Nepali dishes.. The meat dishes seemed like the regular north Indian dishes Was in mood for meat so just ended up ordering Bhana Gosh and naan. Must say the bhana gosh was really really tasty! So flavorful! The spices all blended together so well! I was pleasantly surprised by how little oil was present.. Most Indian restaurants, the dished are over dozed with oil that you see floating around but not in this dish. The naan was fabulous.. So flacky.. I haven't had this great a naan in a long time! Definitely recommend the naan. Puts naan fron other places around here to shame. The restaurant is kept pretty clean compared to the other places in the area and the staff is very nice! I was looking for an authentic Nepalese restaurant in San Francisco today, I finally find out. After, I dine at this place it made me feel like I am at home. I am so please to see great service by Roshan (server) and Gyandeep (cook) and their team. I tried few different items and all test great. I like the most MOMO, Alu Bodi Tama (Potato, Black eye-peas with Bamboo shoot) and Khaja (lunch). Looking forward to eat again,,,,,I would definitely recommend this place and people to try out Nepalese menu, I bet you will enjoy and find an unique test. read more

Stop making my chicken tikka masla mild when everytime i asked for spicy...really makes it so i can't enjoy the food......

The service was abysmal. Too many people in the kitchen. I got the sense that some/all of the employees are family. Some of them look like they'd rather be elsewhere. Unenthusiastic and lazy. The food was fair at best. (Two stars, but relatively expensive for what you get.) Sauces were runny and thin. Just uninspired and bland. And the portions were truly pathetic. Our goat curry, which was $8.99, had no more than 1.5 ounces of meat in it, in addition to a lot of bone and a tiny bit of marrow. The Bengan Bartha was equally disappointing. We had a Nepalese lamb appetizer which was pretty good, the best thing by far. So tiny were the portions, when all is said and done, this is not a cheap restaurant, though it looks and acts the part. We paid 25% more than we do at Shalimar or Chutneys for 50% of the food! Go to Shalimar. Go to Chutneys. Or even Pakwan of Darbar. As for these other Yelpers, I am rather speechless. Other disenchanted peeps, please stand up. I am so uninspired, I can't even think of anything witty to say, so I will leave it at that. read more

Delicious food at great prices! I had the Nepalese lunch special - a delicious and flavorful combination of a garbanzo dish, potatoes, chicken special, and pounded rice. It was definitely a spicy / flavorful meal, but thoroughly enjoyable. A perfect hole-in-the-wall restaurant with quality food that is not overly oily. The service was friendly as well. read more

Everything item I ordered was tasty and then some, started with yogurt sauce with toasted cumin, cucumber and carrots. The cheese nan was so fluffy yet chewy and I ordered some mango chutney for dip. Main dish of tandoori chkn was spicier (flavor, not heat) than other places and well charred, you can tell they just took it out of the the tandoor. Finally, peas palua had the perfect bits of al dente basmati. Did I mention this was all take out? They have kept up the integrity of the food while traveling for my eating pleasure. A++ read more

I ordered lunch from Red Chili for a working lunch meeting. Our order was: butter chicken, curry shrimp, naan, rice, samosas, vegetable mix, saag paneer. Roshan was very friendly and responsive via email and while talking on the phone - he wasn't just about the sell but wanted to provide the best dishes that would compliment each other. The food was very tasty, delivered on-time, and actually Roshan provided extras beyond what I ordered. My group enjoyed it very much. I would recommend Red Chilli for any lunch meetings. I actually had someone come into my office yesterday who was impressed with the lunch and wanted to inquire which restaurant provided the food. I was in San Fran for a conference and was looking for a new restaurant that was unique and not too pricey. Yelp directed me to Red Chilli and I was very impressed with the ambiance and food experience! I tried the traditional Himalayan Thali platter which comes with several bean soups and flavorful curry. The Naan bread was heavenly and also the traditional chai tea-no added sugar so you can control how much you want to add. The waiter was very friendly and his suggestions were spot on through the whole meal. I will stop here every time I can while in SF. Highly recommended! read more
