We were immediately sat an received a nice anniversary card at our table and was wished a Happy Anniversary by each staff member that serviced our table! We split the 16 oz. Ribeye with mushrooms! Enjoyed the ambiance in the restaurant. We got the bread and butter plate. I wasn't too much of a fan Of the lavender butter but I think that others may like it! The frites are delicious and hot! I got the burger and thought it was good, nothing too far from the ordinary. Heavy on the caramelized onions so if that's your jam you'll enjoy it. My friend ordered the mussels and they were delicious ( I would definitely get these again) My only complaint is that we were seated at a table by a window and it was so cold even though the window wasn't open. We were excited to try this Ethan Stowell restaurant, but left pretty disappointed...we made reservations on the "garden patio", which left a lot to be desired. Our party of 6 was crammed into a wooden picnic table, shielded by plastic that blocked any breeze. It was very uncomfortable - ambience outside= 2 stars. Our server also reminded me how important this is to a pleasurable dining experience. Our waiter/server could not have had less personality or interest in helping us... every request was met with the feeling like we were bothering him. We brought wine, which he opened... a second request for a decanter was a seeming imposition - this honestly soured my experience! Service: 2 stars The food was "fine", but not even close to the price point... The salad had a nice dressing but nothing else on it - very plain... the steak - "meh." Amazing! Came here with my family and had a great meal. We ordered drinks and bone marrow to start. They have a great selection of local breweries and wine for WA too. We ordered the Chef's Cut which was 48oz of drool worthy meat. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare and served with the bone. Every bite was divine! Red Cow is another classic Ethan Stowell spot. As with most Ethan Stowell places, the food is ok. You won't find much new or innovative dishes here, but it will taste solid. We got the bone marrow, and two plates of the 12oz St Helens Bavette steak and frites. I liked the fries better than my steak. The cut we had just didn't do it for me. The fries really are 10/10. IMO the food is overpriced for the value (hence the 3 stars). I likely wouldn't go back since if I'm going to pay $50+ for a single plate of steak, I'd rather eat at Flintcreek cattle co or the Butchers Table in SEA. It's a good place to go if you are craving steak and fries, and don't mind dropping some $$$ to get it. Environment inside was very nice - romantic lighting, modern tables, older building. Water refilled quickly. Quality - 6/10 -- Each dish was salty. Beef tartare -- generous portion amount with tangy flavors which however felt a bit heavy-handed. Steak brochette -- six steak pieces on a skewer. Steak tasted fine, not as tender or easy to go down as expected (comparable with say a lamb shank and nowhere as tender as say hotpot meat). Fries were firm and delicately browned but overall taste was pretty par. Overall impression is food visibly salty and not very fresh. I gave this place 4 stars because I had higher expectations for their steak. Overall we ordered the bread with olives, crimini mushrooms, St. Helens Hanger, and Profiteroles for dessert. The best of all was definitely the frites and dessert. Just like other reviews the frites lived up to the hype and were great! However the steak was a bit of a miss. I had ordered mines Medium and it was definitely more on the rare side. The steak was tasty just not cooked to what I've had at other steak houses. The ambiance was great! We've been to a handful of Ethan stowell restaurants and had this one on the list to try. Nice ambiance and friendly service. Food was ok. Value was also just ok. We came on a Tuesday and it was busy! We were told probably 30 minute wait but everyone seemed to clear out right after we got there so we were sat quickly. We ordered a couple apps to start. These took a while to come out. The asparagus with proscuitto and duck egg was delicious. This was my favorite thing out of everything we ordered. Duck egg was so creamy and brought an amazing richness to the asparagus. Saltiness/fattiness of the proscuitto paired well too. We also ordered a cheese plate which I thought was on the boring and small side, especially for nearly $20. Also bummed that two of the four cheeses were bleu cheese. For entrees, I would not recommend the mussels. They were overly mushy and the broth was not rich or flavorful enough in my opinion. It was not one that I would ask for bread to soak up all the goodness at the end. I tried a bite of my husband's burger and they was tasty! Very savory with the bacon, onions and sauce on a fluffy potato bun. Burger was cooked really nicely (medium). Would do a steak or the burger if we came back. Red Cow is where it's at. I ate literally the best meal of my life here. Words can't really describe how wonderful it was, but I'll try. We went here on August 13, 2021 for my birthday dinner. My boyfriend made a reservation and the hostess had a table reserved for us with a birthday card signed by the staff. Our waiter was wonderful and brought us champagne for my birthday to get us started. It was like an actual dream dinner. We ordered a bottle of wine, heirloom tomatoes, and spring carrots to start. Everything was delicious and flawless. We both got the 8oz Painted Hills Filet Mignon (steak frites) for dinner. I had never had so much flavor and amazing presentation in a meal. Ever. The steak was cooked to perfection- it was the best steak I've ever eaten. The steak also had an option to add sauces. I got the red wine reduction sauce and a butter. I literally used every last drop of the wine sauce- it was to die for and I've been craving it ever since this meal. The fries were unbelievably perfect too. I thought fries were fries, but these were the best fries in the world. Period. We got the mousse and profiteroles for dessert. It was heavenly. Our entire meal was a wonderful dining experience. Always loved this place, but...this happened tonight. A dear friend and I decided to dine at Red Cow in my neighborhood tonight. It's one of Ethan Stowell's incredibly lucrative restaurants. A steak frites joint where I paid $68 for a filet mignon with a 22% gratuity built into the bill, automatically. You get the gist. My friend and I both went to great lengths to have lots of cash on hand today. We chose a local restaurant to honor local businesses, and I jumped through multiple hoops that I won't mention to use cash all day, on exclusively small businesses. It's not as easy as you think! We each doled out our $200 in CASH for the bill tonight, only to have the staff approach us as we were gathering our cash, and REFUSE to accept our cash. We explained that it's national economic blackout day. They still refused. The big laugh was the manager (?) saying they can't accept cash for "safety reasons." Hey dude. News flash. You're on the fanciest block in Madrona, with ESR security. I highly doubt you and your fancy ESR restaurant are a target, and if so, I imagine you have some pretty stellar security to handle a very unlikely break-in. Shame. On. You. Ethan Stowell. I know it's already over, but Red Cow's Restaurant Week menu was INCREDIBLE! Not only was the food great, but the portions were huge. For the first course, I was expecting only one dish per person. Instead, we all got to share a charcuterie platter and poached egg and tuna salad, and our own little cups of cold pea soup! There were so many different things to try, I was almost (key word: ALMOST) too full by the time our second course came out. For our entree courses, we tried to get different things between the five of us. Two of us got trout filet, one got the hanger steak and frites, and two got the sharable ribeye and frites. I was able to try a little bit of everything, and I am obsessed with their frites! (They must fry them in some sort of animal fat?? They are so crispy and perfectly fried and I could go on and on about how good they were.) And then despite being stuffed from the first two courses, our desserts arrived, and I got a second wind. We all shared profiteroles (cream puffs), creme brulee, and coconut sorbet. I am so excited to come back and try their regular dinner menu someday. We always love going to Red Cow! The staff are always so welcoming. We usually get any of the steaks or the pork chop as our entree, but any other entree we've ordered has also exceeded our expectations! The bread and butter is divine. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. I had dinner here tonight and witnessed a very disturbing interaction, which was handled with such class and professionalism by the manager. A woman was very upset that the restaurant would not give them a table right away as a walk-in customer. The manager kindly explained that yes, the tables were available but the wait staff is not (a common situation in the industry right now). The woman continued to make outrageous claims and even said that the situation was "fucking ridiculous." My blood was boiling as I watched this woman verbally harass the manager. I couldn't believe that the manger kept his composure and never had a reaction to this woman. He apologized for her experience and said he hopes she will join them another time. If anyone at Red Cow is listening, he deserves a raise! read more

We LOVE ES restaurants so of course we had to try this place and quite honestly we weren't as impressed as some of his other locations but it wasn't like terrible or anything! Our waiter was super nice which was great but it took over an hour to get our main entree, by that time we were absolutely starving! I ordered the burger medium but it came like super rare, and it was disappointing cause I was so hungry. Also the bun was super burnt, and that's all I could taste. Overall the burger had like no flavor. We also ordered the coulotte steak, it was delicious though! We also got the beet salad which was super good & the bread which was delicious. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the food came really slow, took over 2 hours to get 2 appetizers and 2 entrees out. Our waiter was super nice but that's a really long time. We were seated at like 615pm and didn't get our entrees until close to 745pm. And because of my burger. Otherwise it was great! But I prefer other ES restaurants much more than this one. read more

Okay, so I know Quaratine-era reviews probably don't count but I just need to give a huge KUDOS and THANK YOU to Red Cow for making my first Mother's Day so special! My husband and I have been wanting to go back to Red Cow for some time and he took the opportunity this weekend. He reached out to ESR and arranged a way to bring their takeout Mother's Day menu back home to us (in Tacoma) without comprising taste or temperature. Red Cow prepared the dishes and gave my husband instructions to finish them off at home so that we could enjoy our steak and lobster the way they were meant to be enjoyed. The meal was perfect and I really couldn't have asked for anything more. When they found out that we celebrate all of our special occasions at an ESR, they gifted us with a bottle of wine with our dinner. Just AMAZING...especially considering the tough times that I'm sure they are facing. There's definitely a reason that we love ESR's and Red Cow so much...and they never let us down. Wow! I did not expect to enjoy this place that much. I'm not usually a fan of Ethan Stonewell as I usually find his restaurants to be overpriced, overrated, & underwhelming. We came here for restaurant week and the variety of food was superb. The appetizers were to share: pickled beets, butter squash soup, potato croquette, liver charcuterie, & bone marrow. Man, what a great spread. I was a huge fan of the soup and bone marrow. Next, I ordered some a medium rare hanger steak with frites. It came out a little too rare for me and I had to ask them to recook it. I'm not a huge fan of adding horseradish to my steak...but overall, not bad. We had ice cream filled cream puffs for dessert. 20% Tip included into bill is a complete rip off. Frank was so thrilled to be finally dining in this establishment last Saturday night. I made the 15 mile drive through the hood just to get here. Street parking which had open spots really made my evening and was a high sense of relief. Since I was dining alone I was told the last seat at the bar was open. Ok, I thought but I was famished and needing some nourishment big time. I sit down ordered a wine from the bearded man. Then the bearded man places this card in front of me and says a 20% gratuity will be added to my bill "do I mind" he asks. Hell ya I mind, but what choice did I have. My engagement was at 8pm so I accepted and assumed I would get 20% worth of service, NOPE I GOT ZERO SERVICE worth 20%.... Fundamental problem with this new idea of a 20% gratuity just added before service is waiter & staff become lazy. So I order my meal and it shows up. I ask for steak sauce and they don't have any, wahhh. I ask for salt & pepper and to this day it's never showed up. The bearded man was a chatty Kathy with the couple next to me all through my dinner I had to listen to the bloke slobber all over them and tell his life story. Blah Blah Blah! All I got was his lady friend hates his garlic consumption , like I care TMI.... it wasn't until I finished he basically uttered more words to me to blow up my bill with a desert menu..... So for 20% that is what I paid for a service, and it shows! My steak & frites combo was sensational. Almost one of the tenderest rib eye steaks I've ever eaten. The steak butter which accompanied it absolutely made the steak for me. The side of fries with garlic aioli sauce topped of my meal and told me this place knows how to make a proper steak for consumption. My issue is not with the 1st class cut of beef I was served , that's was amazing. It was the 20% which was tagged onto my bill and then failed to deliver on the service which was poor. This trend for restaurants needs to stop or people shall stop patronizing them. We came here for Seattle Restaurant Week tonight for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. I made a reservation with a 3rd party app called SevenRooms that Red Cow uses, and noted that it was my boyfriend's birthday. When we arrived, there was a signed card from the kitchen staff wishing him a happy birthday, which was so sweet! We ordered the Falling Forward cocktail and the Tina's Wild Horses cocktail. Both ($13 each) were fine but nothing to write home about. For appetizers, we got the smoked salmon and the chicken liver mousse. The smoked salmon was fantastic and a great size, but the chicken liver mousse was wayyyy too rich and livery for us. We barely touched it even though I usually like chicken liver mousse. The waitress actually noticed and offered to bring us an alternate appetizer which was super nice but we declined since we were already getting full. For the entree we split the 1 lb ribeye + fingerling potatoes which was a $25 upgrade in total. It was a decent size portion, although I will say it would not have been filling enough if we hadn't had appetizers. We also got a glass of Cabernet Franc each. And last, for dessert, we got the profiteroles and the sorbet. The profiteroles were AMAZING - the ice cream/Creme fraiche in the middle was so genius w the salted caramel sauce. Total bill after tip was ~$190. Oh! And everyone in the reviews who complains about the door is totally right. It either slammed shut and startled everyone or it didn't close and was wide open and it would get super cold in the restaurant. This is more of a 3.5, but I'm rounding up. I wanted to love this place (as I do almost all other Ethan Stowell Restaurants), but the service just wasn't there. It took about 25 minutes from the time we arrived to the time we got our drinks, and our waiter just seemed too overwhelmed. It looked like there was only one waiter actually taking orders and closing out, but he had assistance from others to bring out the food. To me it seemed like mostly a staffing issue, and partially just a disinterested waiter. Overall though, we really enjoyed the food we ordered. I think the winners for us was the beef tartare and the gnocchi- both of which were amazing. I can see us giving the service a second chance, but we may just stick to the other ESR's. read more

Had a double date on a Saturday night and sat outdoors in their lovely patio. Maxwell was a lovely, knowledgeable and friendly waiter. Three different cocktails were all Interesting and delicious. The restaurant decanted a very fine bottle of wine we brought though they did not filter out the sediment, which was a bit of a disappointment. The menu is reasonably generous with options and we ordered several starters, all of them delicious. We chose to share the cote-de-boeuf and a filet mignon among the table and had just the right amount of food. The desserts were delightful. I will be happy to return. read more

I wanted to love Red Cow, but some things just aren't meant to be (perhaps we need more time.) Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike my experience, it just wasn't as great as I'd hoped. I've never tried an Ethan Stowell Restaurant that I didn't love, in fact- most of my favorite restaurants in town are part of the ESR family. This particular experience was for SRW (Seattle Restaurant Week), where I meticulously explore the menus of participating restaurants to select new ones to try or old ones to rediscover. Booking a reservation online was easy, with plenty of availabilities despite it being in the midst of restaurant week. We arrived about 10 minutes early and were promptly seated. Service was very friendly and attentive from start to finish. My one gripe about service would be the time it took to get cocktails, we were well into the first few appetizers before they showed up. I also noticed that my $9 daily cocktail special selection was charged as a $12 "bartenders choice" - honestly too full and tired to want to mention it, but not ideal. The ambiance/decor is nice, it's modern yet cozy with stylish vibes as you'd find at other ESR establishments. One fun touch is the little cow figurines you'll find displayed (and a bit hidden) through the restaurant. Moving onto the food.. it is ALWAYS a pleasure to see an SRW menu that features a list of appetizers for the table to share- a great way to try a number of dishes, without the stress of making a decision. Appetizers: -Asparagus Vichyssoise: Good but fell a little flat needing a saltier element in my opinion. -Mixed Greens: Vinaigrette was great, radishes added a nice touch -Lamb Pate: The pate itself was OK, the gherkins and pickled veggies were the stars of this dish. -Macrina Baguette: The Seville orange confiture.. amazing! -Salt Cod Croquettes: These were awesome! Really enjoyed the lemon aioli as well. I would have happily skipped the pate course for more of these. Entrees: -Grilled Hanger Steak Brochettes: The steak was cooked as requested (medium rare), and a decent portion (despite initially seeming meager with how it's presented on a skewer.) Nothing to write home about in terms of flavor, the fries were great. Also wasn't a fan of the demi-glace, the meat paired better with a bit of aioli. -Nettle Gnocchi: I enjoyed this one, but very glad we asked for the rhubarb gastrique on the side- I can't imagine ruining the delicate flavors of this dish with an overpoweringly sweet sauce. Desserts: -Profiteroles: Great, the mousse was delicious Lemon Meringue Bar: The strawberry coulis tasted artificial and far too sweet -Seasonal Sorbet: I believe it was pineapple, and it was excellent! Cocktails: -Daily Special (Bourbon Negroni): Excellent! Would have preferred it over ice. -French Connection: Well done -Mezcal Old Fashioned: While I generally prefer the classic, this was really good- perfectly smokey without being overbearing. Overall a decent experience, but fell short of expectations. I'd be interested to try again from the full menu- as I don't think they put the best SRW foot forward. Here's the run down Appetizers: * Smoked Salmon = so good, couldn't tell what the brown sauce was but it went together so well topped on a little toasted bread * Fried beef tendon = wasn't what we were expecting. This out of towner was in search of foie gras on a Sunday night in Seattle. I indulge in this French delicacy everytime I travel nowadays, since it's banned in California. Smooth, buttery and minimally adorned to let the rich flavors shine through. Just a few pickled veggies and good ol' whole grain mustard as accoutrements. Definitely ask for more toast and at $8 for 3 small rings, it's not a bad price. Red Cow doesn't have the intimate feel of an authentic French bistro, but in this residential neighborhood, a casual modern style restaurant is a welcome sight. Bistro staples are prepared well, like steak frites (cooked as requested!), moules frites (plump mussels cooked in white wine/thyme sauce) and Salt cod appetizer. Good cocktails too! (the bf recommends the Black Manhattan, I had sparkling ... H20 because of lent) I do have to comment that they VERY happily use salt in their frites. Like, a LOT. While I definitely prefer my fries to be on the salty side, I had to dust off the salt on these potato sticks before inhaling them. Went with my daughter and her family last Saturday for dinner at Red Cow for my birthday. Bless her heart! Love steak frites and French food. Daughter went to university in Paris (Science Po!!). Love eating in Paris. What a disappointment. The people at Red Cow do not "love" their meat. As others have posted, I got my steak cold. My daughter hates when I complain in the restaurant, so this is my rant. I ordered their top of the line steak ($160+ for two) and IT SHOULD NOT BE SERVED COLD! You would never experience this at the MET! They "love" their meat. It was too expensive to make such a mistake. Also, they told us over the phone that they have a "kids menu". They might call it a kids menu, but it is not. My wife had the scallops and loved them. Maybe my bad luck, but not when I am paying top, top price. Skip it. read more

I'm mad for the cow! And it's because, it's tres good! This could be my new favorite Ethan Stowell spot, and its definitely my new favorite place to get a gourmet hamburger in Seattle. Their hamburger is perfectly seasoned, generous, perfectly cooked (my doneness preference is a red medium rare) with lush toppings and an enormous side of terrifically crispy frites. The Red Cow does a fantastic job with their charcuterie, especially soft, light and generous whipped offerings like a heavenly chicken liver mousse terrine. We enjoyed the the tiny but tasty foie gras offering, and traditional, harder pistachio accented Pâté de Campagne, but if the chicken liver mousse is any indication, next round we are going all in on the charcuterie items with 'terrine' in the name. Their housemade pickling accompaniments (green beans, cauliflower and carrots) are really pumped up with caper and ginger flavor. I was on the fence about going down a star on Red Cow, mainly because one main we ordered was somewhat disappointing. The pork tenderloin was overdone, particularly on the ends, and a fairly significantly different doneness to my neighbor to the right. It was her beautiful medium rare tenderloin, a colorful plate of food and a juicy, exciting piece of meat, that inspired me to order this dish, which comes alongside a summer ratatouille. Mine was still very tasty, but definitely overcooked when compared to hers, and my pink flesh inconsistent with the red, terrific looking serving they had just presented to the lucky lady to my right. Another small ding, they don't have IPA on draft, but only in the bottle. With such a great wine list and with burgers and fries, I really hope they think about their NW audience and remedy that situation. Meanwhile, given such a great night out, terrific food, good wine, exceptional housemade charcuterie, friendly service, and an absolutely perfect hamburger, I highly recommend this spot. They do owe me a little "red pig" though, the next time I drop by. read more

Not hyperbole: the worst brunch I've probably ever had. Example: Croque Monsieur that seemed like it came out of a package made off site and the cheese wasn't even melted; and it was generally on the cold side. Coffee came out cold. A crepe that was essentially tasteless. The only decent thing was kids' menu pancakes. And it was $200+ for 6 people. Just pass on this place. read more

The overall experience was ok. The best part was the appetizers (escargot, olives, bone marrow). The main entrees were good but lack luster for the price. The waiter said that the chocolate torte was too small to share. While it was good, one dessert was enough to share given how much we already ate. If he paid attention, he would've noticed that. He didn't seem very attentive during service. He took too long to take our order and forgot to bring items at times. We'd definitely go back to try the rest of the appetizers on the menu. read more

Sometimes you just want to take a ravenously primal bite of a cow. Sometimes you want refined bistro cuisine. Like the girl in those commercials from the '90s said, why can't we have both? Well my friend, you can have both at the Red Cow. Food: We ordered the one pound ribeye and the hanger. The hanger was pretty good. The ribeye was amazing. Perfect sear, dripping in flavor, and juicy bliss inside. The fries were great as well - wonderful rosemary flavor and perfectly crunchy. Service: Attentive and friendly. We had a good experience.
