Visited Red Cow in Madrona last weekend and had a really nice experience overall! A french style steakhouse nestled in Madrona, the place is warm and bustling--lots of energy, a little on the loud side, but in a good way. It feels like a neighborhood gem that still takes food seriously. Our server was super friendly, knew the menu inside and out, and made some great suggestions. Starters: we went with the Provençal Olives-ADDICTIVE, & The Salad Verte- Super simple just mixed greens, herbs, and a light vinaigrette. For mains we decided to split the 14oz Double R Ranch Center Cut Ribeye and it was phenomenal. Cooked perfectly medium rare, super juicy, and packed with flavor. Definitely on the pricier end, but worth it. The quality of the meat was top-notch. Paired it with the béarnaise sauce (which was creamy and herby and amazing) and their classic fries. The fries were crispy and well-seasoned--nothing too wild, but they hit the spot. Overall: Red Cow definitely knows its strengths--great steaks, simple but flavorful apps, and a cozy vibe. Not cheap, but it feels like you're getting what you pay for. Would absolutely come back, especially for that ribeye and those olives. read more

We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday with another couple. We pre ordered with our reservation a glass of sparkling wine. The restaurant was quaint and a view of the kitchen which felt reminiscent of our time in Paris. We brought our own special occasion wine, but there were some nice French options to choose from. Honestly, my favorite part of the meal was the chocolate pot de creme. It was devine. Our service was attentive, but the food was a bit slow. Wow wow wow wow!!! If I could give this restaurant more than 5 stars I would in a heartbeat, everything was absolutely phenomenal. From the food, to the service to the outdoor / indoor atmosphere it was amazing across the board and nothing fell short. Their happy hour was 10/10 and I highly recommend going then so you can try more things on the menu and share with friends because you need to order basically everything since it's that delicious. I went here for happy hour to get some meat dishes, as the name of the restaurant suggests (Red Cow). For dinner they are mostly known for steak frites at a premium (starting at $50+) so we decided to get something similar from the happy hour menu - steak brochette, as well as the steak tartare. The steak brochette was requested medium rare though it was more like medium well, but the meat is still juicy and nicely seasoned. It comes with fries that are decent as well as the horseradish cream that was not too strong, so you can use liberally. The steak tartare was okay - the pickles were way too strong and I've had better. Service is good as they refill water regularly and food came out decently quick. We were able to thoroughly enjoy the meal in around 30 minutes, and we didn't rush at all. read more

Update: the general manager below is actually the waiter that was on staff yesterday that made the decision to send my plate back in a Tupperware. I find the comment below very performative. Considering if he actually cared about my experience, he could have taken care of that in person when I was there. I get that to him, I'm a Yelp review, but I'm a human being. It feels shitty to be treated poorly at a restaurant because of the color of my skin and/or because of my sexuality. Anyways, I called the restaurant and apparently he's out for the next 4 days which he never mentioned below. I've eaten at Red Cow before without problems, but my most recent visit was humiliating. The waiter asked how my steak was, and when I mentioned it was overcooked, she decided on her own to take it back. Instead of remaking it or handling it with professionalism, the male server (not the woman working that night) returned it into a plastic Tupperware. At a fine French restaurant, that is insulting and made it feel like I was being kicked out. When I told them as much, the server laughed at me. As a dark brown-skinned transgender man, I believe this treatment was rooted in racism and transphobia. I usually dress up when I dine here, but this time I had come straight from physical therapy up the street and was dressed casually. That should never justify being mocked or dismissed. I want to be clear -- I don't believe the woman server was responsible, and I even tipped her 40% for her service. The problem was how the male staff and perhaps the chef handled the situation, especially in a restaurant that was not even busy (there were only three other parties dining). The food as always was good. I was there in October and our reservation was for outside. When we arrived there was one heater and it hadn't been turned on yet. tl:dr My problem with the experience was not so much that the food was mediocre but the price that I ended up paying was so significant for that mediocre food. If I wanted to eat mediocre food, there are any number of restaurants in Seattle that I can go to knowing full well what to expect for the money I'd pay. Edit: It's been a day now, and this may seem silly, but I'm still a little grumpy about the fact that I was given ANCHOVY BUTTTER, with no warning, simply labeled as "seasonal butter". What??!! Who does that?! And if this speaks to my perceived lack of a refined palate, so be it. Chunks of anchovies! Came to Red Cow for a special event, and unfortunately, did not feel like it was worth it for the money spent. The good: our server, a gentleman with a groomed beard, was attentive and helpful, the filet mignon and herb compound butter was delicious, the beef tartare was excellent, we had noted the special event on our reservation and it was mentioned by the server and there was a cute note. The bad: the tables are close together but also quite wide between the diners at the same table, making an intimate conversation feel unaccessible. Our rib eye, the most expensive steak on the menu, had far more fat than is enjoyable or edible. The bread and butter came with a butter that was blended with of all things anchovy, which gave a heavy funk and we ultimately asked for just plain butter on the side. The so so: the fries and dipping sauce were fine. The garlic aioli that came with the fries was honestly underwhelming. I'm sorry to say that I genuinely prefer the garlic aioli that comes from PNW fast food chain Burgerville. Outside of the beef tartar (amazing), and the filet mignon none of the items should've been more than 30 or so dollars . read more

Oh red cow. My partner and I visited once before about a year ago to celebrate my birthday and had a wonderful experience. We came again excited for another wonderful meal but were unfortunately met with long wait times, bad service and poorly cooked meat. We had a reservation for 7pm arrived and were seated promptly. Our server came over, without introducing himself, gave us a moment to peruse the menu before returning to take our orders without much interaction, in a way that felt somewhat rude. We brushed it off thinking that may be his serving style but quickly realized as he interacted with the table seated next to us, after us, that we simply received the short end of the stick, as he offered them suggestions on wine and had a much more pleasant demeanor. Appetizers came quickly and were delish, frisée and beets! However the steaks did not come for about 45 minutes and when they did arrived were incorrect. We ordered a strip and ribeye and received a filet and strip along with some broccolini. While they did correct the order on the spot, and comped the missing ribeye, it was overall unfortunate and all the steaks we received, ordered medium rare, came rare. Our server? No where to be seen after taking our order the first time! Our incorrect and corrected steaks were brought out by another worker. My wine glass sat empty for 30 minutes before our server returned after not seeing our table for 45+ minutes to ask if I would like another, no. Boxes please! The table next to us also waited an hour for their steaks, our server did continue to visit and interact with them throughout the night, explaining a private event was the reason for such a delay. Overall sad to have experienced such an evening at red cow and hoping no one else has a similar experience moving forward, however we will be finding a new neighborhood steak destination. read more

Drinks: Got two glasses of bubbly ($12 each) - one white and one rose. Food: Steak Tartare ($18) - finely executed, love the lemon zest on top. Mussels ($30) - good amount of fresh mussels, served with crispy fries. The house made (I think?) ketchup was light and sweet and the garlic aioli dip was delicious as well. This is our new favorite local hangout now that Luc's is closed. The service is great and they have both outdoor seating and a nice bar and indoor area. This is a clossic French Bistro and it is a great value during Happy Hour. Our typical happy time consists of getting the salad vert which is terrific, large and fresh, then an order of the steak tartare which is nicely seasoned and pretty authentic judging by the time we were in Lyon, the birthplace of that dish apparently. For the winter, their Duck Confit is terrific as is their Coq Au Vin. The staff is also great, we've gotten to know a few of them and they are friendly and helpful particularly when selecting the right wine to go with dinner or picking the right cut of beef for your main course. The bar is also great with a good selection, we particular like their version of the French 75 and their various specials are ones to try. Their big specialty is their steaks of course and they have some unusual cuts that your should try. The coulotte is a nice treat and great recommendation. This is flavorful and comes with some great frites (really a gigantic pile!). Finally, since it is part of the Ethan Stowell family, make sure to sign up for the ESR (their rewards program). They also have a deal with In-Kind where you can prepay to get a discount. This is perfect for those of us who are up at the Red Cow early and often. Food: 2.5/5. The "Potato Leek Bisque" was the highlight. The veggies that came with the "Filet Mignon" were too hard and the "Salad Lyonnaise" was super salty. The preset menu was too overpriced, totaling $256 (including 22% service charge). Service: Booked Valentine's Day on Google/SevenRooms. Arrived to find a surprise set menu. Asked to order from the regular menu but the waiter said "No this is the menu for tonight". We told him we would come back another day because we wanted to order from the regular menu. He called his manager over. We faced a threat of a cancellation fee ($95 per person) from the manager who claimed we were informed of the preset menu when making the reservation on their website. I booked through Google/SevenRooms, and there was no mention of the preset menu. Included pictures as proof and even tried booking again for later that night to check if Google/SevenRooms mentioned the preset menu. No mention of a preset menu in any of the confirmation or reminder emails from Google/SevenRooms either. We decided to stay to avoid paying the fee. They ran out of the "Egg Mimosa", an item on the first course menu. How are you gonna have a preset menu but run out of one of the items?? and two hours into opening?? The couple sitting next to us shared our disappointment and confusion about the preset menu. They left. The next couple that replaced their table was confused and disappointed about menu limitations and dish availability of the Egg Mimosa as well. Waiter was nice, but the manager wasn't. We went this weekend and met another couple. The food is excessively overpriced. The portions were small, the service was mediocre, and the food was unappetizing. I ordered the restaurant week beet salad, vegetable tart, and a dessert. $65. The beets were advertised as being roasted. They had been boiled. They were served cold. It was literally a pile of beets with maybe four pieces of hazelnut and some kind of cheese smeared on the inside of the bowl, it was all covered with a net of arugula, as if to disguise the fact that the beets were, just beets. The tart arrived clearly burnt on the edges, and broken into pieces the middle, as if someone could not remove it from the pan, and the crust was some kind of gritty, almost sandy consistency. Somehow, the vegetables in the tart were soggy. This was also covered with a net of arugula, it looked totally unappetizing. My husband ordered the filet which was much smaller than advertised. He ordered it medium. It was totally raw in the middle. He was unable to finish it. His french fries were a tiny side paper cone maybe 3" ? and they were soggy. It is pretty difficult to ruin french fries. The dessert was good. That was the highlight. 22% gratuity was automatically included for our party of 4, even though our waiter never offered to refill our water didn't clear our dirty plates and did not check to see whether my husband's steak was cooked properly. As a table, we had one drink and shared one bottle of wine with four people. I will gladly pay for good food and quality service, but I am not interested in being required to pay an absurd amount for poor food and poor service. Our total bill was approximately $250 for each couple. I cannot recommend Red Cow. read more

Preface: We love ESR! We always take advantage of the Black Friday gift card deals. We are also members of the ESR Reward Club, which is free to join. So there are my tips before you dine! Onto my review of Red Cow, in the ESR family: Our main reason for dining out is to take advantage of the ESR 15th anniversary $15 deal menu. From the special menu at Red Cow, we ordered the Frisée Salad (reg.$16 a $1 savings), the Red Cow Burger & Frites (reg. $22 a $7 savings), and the Penn Cove Moules Frites (reg. $27 a $12 savings). From the regular menu I ordered the Mischief Managed cocktail mainly for the namesake as a Harry Potter lover. It was delicious and I could drink 5 ... but I limited it to 1. This drink is a top seller according to our waiter. It is sweet but not overly-so with lime. The other "non-special" menu item we ordered was the Roast Beets Salad ($14) was a perfect starter salad for 1. We ordered a lot of food and we always split everything. The pear and beets made this a sweet salad which is a great way to fool me into eating more vegetables! The fat makes the frisée salad! This salad is large enough to split or have as an entree. Though as an entire you might want to add a protein source. The Red Cow burger was tasty and served a medium rare as we enjoy it. The combination of ingredients was tasty. But the most impressive part was the meat to bun ratio which was spot on with no leftover bun when finishing the burger. The fries came with both the burger and the mussels. These were the best fries I've ever had! I usually eat a couple and I'm good. I eat a ton of these salty snacks. And they have an extra flavor, I believe it's rosemary, and that just sealed it for me. So good!!! Red Cow's mussels reminded me of a vacation on the Mediterranean in the south of France. The only thing that was missing was bread to enjoy more of the sauce with the mussels. This dish only came with fries. We wanted to enjoy dessert too, but the only offering that really appealed to us was their chocolate bread pudding and they were sold out. Obviously, it's popular! Next time, Red Cow, next time! Also, beware of the current 4% "pandemic charge" to offset the price increase on goods and non-labor related costs. read more

Took me forever to finally try Red Cow in Madrona, part of Ethan Stowell's restaurant group. Having a hankering for steak frites and trying to buoy my spirits after a job loss a few days prior. Seattle Restaurant Week dining campaign was frutuitous snagging a reservation on 11/2/20, posting on 2/27/21. Thorough check in upon arrival with temperature checks and contact tracing, mask wearing and socially distanced seating were in place. Dim, angular interior. Three stars for the cuisine. It was okay, not stellar. One extra star for the one hardworking person covering host and wait duties for both inside and the outside guests in the sidewalk tents. If this person had a fitbit, it would have imploded. The three courses for SRW and beverages were underwhelming. There are just better Ethan Stowall sites versus Red Cow. Not compelling for a return visit coming from Shoreline on a weeknight dinner visit. read more

This little gem is in our neighborhood and I so appreciate the happy hour between 3 and 5 PM. The mussels and French dip, which are on the happy hour, are our favs. The French onion soup is perfection and we crave it, especially at this time of year when it's cold out. Love the options for vegetable side dishes which are prepared with attention. Also, the nonalcoholic options from the bar have been pretty tasty. Also, the weight staff is very attentive. Keep in mind - I'm a very frequent visitor here, but just for one item in the menu - tartar. It's the best in Seattle, and in whole PNW, and I tried it everywhere. I'm not a big fun of their burger, not a big fan of their duck, and their cocktails are average or slightly above average. But their tartar is just 12/10. read more

I thought I had been to all of ESR group's restaurants but apparently I missed this one! I was so excited to see them on SRW's lineup and with a seafood entree option! Hello halibut! We had a reservation and got a cute little patio table up a driveway. It was so cute and inviting! There were three of us so two of us had the cheese plate and one ordered the vert salad - it was enough for all of us to share everything and be content! Next I had the perfectly prepared and presented halibut. I don't usually rave about peas in a dish but the reduction on this made those peas something to write home about! My friend had the duck confit (leg and sausage in the white beans under it). She said it was very good and filling. The dessert was a lovely lemon tart. I'm not a big lemon fan and I really enjoyed this one. To go with dinner I had two of the rose options. I have had the one house brand rose blend before at HTCAW and wanted to get a bottle here. The sweet server said it was going to be 4x the glass price so I said I'd have to think about it. This spot is so fun! They have a great outside eating, perfect for the nice weather and heaters all around just in case it gets chilly. Tables are evenly spaces with dividers in-between. Plus indoor seating for those not wanting to eat outside. The happy hour prices were so worth it and dishes are delicious. It was the perfect little menu to enjoy and a surprise since we did not even realize we were there during happy hour. It has been so long since we had been out to eat we completely forgot happy hour was a thing!! To order, we ended up with the bone marrow, mussels & fries, and burger plus a drink & coffee all for a great price. The food was delicious. The burger cooked perfectly with great flavor. I debated ordering another because it was that good but also small. The mussels were fresh and clean. The bone marrow was decadent and rich in the best way on toasted bread. A romantic steakhouse with quality drinks and food in the picturesque Madrona neighborhood. There are two private tents out front with heated and covered outdoor seating and a larger shared tent in the back. Reservations are highly recommended as there is limited walk-in availability! 1) Service (+): Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great suggestions for all courses. 2) Ambiance (-): I highly recommend making a reservation online to secure a table but the only caveat is you have to put down your credit card and there is a $25/person cancellation charge if you don't cancel with 12 hours of notice. We called and Red Cow was kind enough to waive cancellation charges due to the snow, but putting down a credit card (knowing unforeseen circumstances could come up) did dampen the relaxed atmosphere of dining out. We were lucky to get one of the private tents in the front, which was well-ventilated, heated, and covered. The table was also set adorably! 3) Food (+): For appetizers, we ordered the Delicata Squash, which was perfectly caramelized in a fig and sage oil coating. We also had the Moules a la Meuniere, mussels marinated in a white wine, lemon, parsley, and shallot sauce that was perfect for dipping with the baguette. The two of us shared a 20oz ribeye, which was grilled to medium rare heaven and came with a side of the best seasoned frites I've ever tasted! 4) Alcohol (+): There is an extensive list of wine and cocktails on the menu. I had the Pearisian cocktail, which was a summery blend of vodka and pear puree, and the Love Potion #9, with vodka, grapefruit juice and hibiscus. 5) Value for Money (+): At price points of ~$10-15 per appetizer, $10 per drink, and $40-$45 for a 10oz steak, the prices here are steep but worth the quality. read more

Red Cow is a steak-frites themed restaurant from Ethan Stowell in Seattle's Central District. The location is easily accessible, with plenty of easy street parking nearby. The restaurant interior is attractive, but we sat outside on what was described as a heated patio. Sitting on the patio on a Winter evening was probably a mistake - but the restaurant was clear about the conditions before I booked. The patio is protected from wind, and there was a heater. But I think I underestimated how cold things would be and we both wore our coats through dinner and I regretted not choosing a different restaurant. Menu selection is limited. Really steak frites and appetizers. Menu prices are high. Food quality of the steaks was good, but not commensurate with the prices Most disappointing, the Frites were not fresh cut. A key part of a Steak Frites for me is properly fresh cut fries. You can see in the photos on the Red Cow website that the frites used to be fresh cut (15th photo), but later pictures make it clear that they are no longer. I was hoping that I had mis-read the situation, but sadly the fries were bad. This is inexcusable for a steak-frites place. Weakly recommended. This is a good but not great steak place with decent meats, high prices and bad frites. read more

We recently went back to Red Cow to use our "red envelopes" from December (basically an envelope with a surprise gift inside - a free appetizer, free bread, a gift certificate, etc.). We wound up getting $75 off our meal with our three envelopes! Note that early in COVID, there wasn't table service and food was ordered via app. There now is table service - our server was friendly and provided great recommendations on his favorite cuts. We enjoyed several starters - the mussels were plump and the broth was amazing. All the steaks our table got were delicious. My filet was extremely tender and perfectly cooked. This is for NYEve 4 course prix fixe dinner. We love Ethan Stowell's food, and ate a lot during the pandemic, so thought we'd try Red Cow, as we liked the NYE menu. What I forgot was that when we ordered dinner for 2 as takeout we would have enough left over for almost another whole meal, which was great. So when they set down 4 (! ) appetizers we ate them! Charcuterie plate which was good, bread, butter and olives, good, hamachi crudo, excellent! Then bone marrow with oxtail marmalade. The marmalade just sat on top of unseasoned, unbruleed marrow. Which made it just taste like a lot of bland fat, with bread. Should have skipped that. 2nd course we chose Pig Trotter Croquette, yummy. And Baby Beets, so disappointing! The yellow beets were soft and overcooked, the red hard as a rock. 3rd course husband had Coquilles St Jacques, which was good, but so rich and he was so full, he brought 1/2 home. I chose the Wagyu Zabuton Steak, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and very tasty, but so chewy I could only swallow about 1/2 of it, and left several chewed up bits on the plate. The accompanying potato puree was delicious, the baby vegetables mostly very hard. Didn't finish it or bring it home. Dessert was out of the question, so we brought that home. My other big complaint is the size of the pours in the wine pairing. I've mostly had wine pairings with winery associated dinners, and the pours were adequate to generous. These were probably 2 oz pours, not enough to drink with the whole course. I said to our waiter (who did give good service) that I would have been better off ordering 2 glasses of wine, unless their regular pours were tiny. He said they were 6 oz. Food is excellent and service was great! I appreciate the location in Madrona. Quiet!

We brought a party on 9 on Father's Day with no reservation, and immediately got a great spot on the patio. Ben G was our server, and we all agreed he was AMAZING! He was very attentive but not overbearing. When we asked about the Moscow Mule, he told us they prep the ginger beer in-house every week. It was delicious!
